You just don't happen to like Shatner, Amos, and that is all there is to it. Nothing more to it whatsoever. I like both Chongo and Shatner. I like all the characters I have fun with on this forum, which is why I bother to have fun with them.

I genuinely like Star Trek and all its weird history and offbeat character actors (of which I'd say De Forest Kelly "Bones" was definitely the oddest), and I genuinely like William Shatner and find him to be quite the entertainer in his own peculiar way.

I bought his book "Get A Life" just for a lark, and to my surprise found it to be a simply great read. There's more to Mr Shatner than just a toupee and a big gut.

You think I just pulled Shatner out of a hat one day and thought, "Hey, here's something I can pester the Mudcat Forum with..."? Well, it didn't happen that way, as I have explained in my previous post. I've been interested in him for a very long time.

If I had chosen Jerry Lewis to torture the forum with...THAT would have been capricious and meaningless. I don't give a damn about Jerry Lewis.

Little Hawk:

Well of course he means something.

The question is what.

Anyway, if he is important to you, go for it. It doesn't strike me as genuine. Now, Chongo, HE's genuine. Much realer than Shatner.

Either you children be good or I'll stop thinking about you and you'll all disappear. I mean it! Now go to the table and sit there staring at each other without making a sound!

That's not entirely fair, Amos. Shatner does have meaning for me, although he clearly does not for you, and some of it is quite positive meaning.. I did NOT simply pick him at random when I decided to see if I could launch a Mudcat icon just for the hell of it...(having noticed the bizarre fooferaw that endlessly swirled around Cletus, Paw, the Reg Boys, Cleigh O'Possum, the Little Pissant, and the NYCFTTS...all created by one Mudcatter, you will note). I picked him because Star Trek and its various characters have always interested me, and are interesting in their own right as a major cultural phenomenon ever since the show first appeard in the late 60's. I've been into the whole thing for a long time, basically since about '69.

Although the acting in the original series was, in retrospect, corny at times (and not at other times), the groundbreaking scripts that Gene Rodenberry came up with were absolutely revolutionary in their philosophical implications. They were a complete different take on the idea of society from our money-driven, disunited, dog-eat-dog culture. They were a breath of fresh air, in fact.

You think I am just fucking around with Shatner for no other reason than to fuck around. That is not correct. I am sometimes doing that, but definitely not all the time.

Now the icons that Spaw created were, in my opinion, with the exception of Neil Young and the NYCFTTS, far more arbitrary and capricious than Mr Shatner. Mr Shatner is real, he's an entertainment personality, as is Neil Young, and like Neil Young he's a character distinctive enough...and odd enough, you might say...that one can spin endless jokes, yarns, and stories using him as the foil. Exactly the same thing in both cases.

He has also done musical recordings (although he can't sing)...and that makes him more appropriate to make jokes about on this forum than if he had not done that.

I see little or no difference in my selecting Shatner or Spaw selecting Neil Young to make ridiculous stories about. If there is a difference, you tell me what it is.

Spaw's other inventions were essentially frivolous, just for fun, and that's fine. That's what I did with Chongo Chimp, for instance, and several other fictional characters.

You go on and on about Shatner as though I were violating some kind of rule of order here by daring to use a Canadian actor whom some would accuse of overacting for humorous purposes on this holy forum.

Well, get stuffed. I think you are taking your own personal taste on the matter a bit too seriously. I find the NYCFTTS and the Neil Young stuff damn funny. I find Shatner damn funny too. So do a number of other people. If you don't, fine, but you are not in a position to dictate what is and is not funny on this forum for all the other people.

I have been joking about Shatner for the last 35 years, Amos! Long before I ever knew about Mudcat. I find Shatner and Star Trek both interesting, enjoyable, and sometimes very funny. So do a hell of a lot of other people, and he IS Canadian too, and that matters to Canadians. We are proud of our few actors and actresses who have made a name for themselves in the big USA.

My selection of Shatner for humour on Mudcat was NOT a mere arbitrary throw of the icon dart at the forum board, it was not a meaningless non-sequitor to me, it was something I've always found amusing. It was inevitable that I would choose at some point to tell Shatner jokes on Mudcat, and he is the least arbitrary and meaningless character I have ever chosen to play around with on this forum.

Man, he may mean diddly-squat to you, but he means something to me and Star Trek means something to me. And you don't get that, do you? What I find fascinating about that show was that it could be that good in some ways and that bad at times too...all on the same show. It was most unusual. Shatner, likewise, is unusual, because although one can make fun of his acting, his non-singing, and all the rest, he was absolutely perfect for that show, and he's done some other pretty neat stuff here and there.

Neither he nor Star Trek are to be simply dismissed as valueless, unless you are simply too prejudiced to bother giving them a fair look in the first place.

I do not accept your view of my use of Shatner on this forum, Amos. If someone else who was a longtime and beloved member of the original founding few who launched this forum or were there in the very early days had introduced Shatner...or someone else like him...in exactly the same way and for the same purposes, I think that you would think it was a great idea and you would think it was funny. Just like Neil Young and the NYCFTTS. Same deal.

By the way, there's another one: James Taylor and the James Taylor Institute for Catatonic Blandness or something like that. Spaw launched that one too, but it remained one that only showed up occasionally. Again, same basic idea. Spaw does not have a monopoly here on using popular entertainment figures as the foil for a running joke, Amos...or does he? If so, please show me his license, okay?

FleetwoodMac where a pretty good blues/rock band in the 60's before they moved to L.A. from England and took on Nicks and Buckingham as members. They had a gutiarists by the name of Peter Green who is a legend in his own way .. I have the album An English Rose from that period which contains such tracks as Albatross and Black Magic Woman ... yes, it is originally by them and quite good, better than Sanata's version (my opinion anyway).

See, what it is, LH, is that he is a Faux Icon, and this means that you have been spending too much time faux icon around.

Everything about him is false. He was brought to the Mudcat for false reasons, and his iconhood was an artifice. The only thing he is well-know or talked about on the Mudcat for is for being talked about -- a vacuum trying to draw itself out endlessly and futilely.   All the other Mudcat Icons, like Spaw, Rick, Cleigh, even the Little Pissant, have substance. But YOUR icon was invented without any earning power behind it, a hollow straw thing, in effect raised up by your own manipulations, because you waved your hand and said me-me-me-I wanna be an icon maker too.

Being less than careful what you wished for, you have inherited the wind.

But I know when someone is faux icon with me. Never fear.

They had an incredible number of hits, but I never owned a single album of their stuff for whatever reason, and when I heard those songs on the radio in the 70's and much of the 80's I didn't know who it was. I finally became aware of who Stevie Nicks was in the later 80's, I think, when the video age came around, because I saw some of her solo stuff on TV. She did a song with Tom Petty called "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around", and another one with some other guy called "Leather and Lace". Those were in the 90's, as far as I recall. She sure had a lot of radio airplay.

What's the fuss about a flat chest? Who wants a flat chest? I don't!

Mike, I think you're slipping if you haven't heard Stevie Nicks a few hundred times over the years while you were out driving in the car, if no place else where you might listen to popular radio.

Visit this album at Amazon (The Very Best of Fleetwood Mac) and drop down to the samples at the bottom of the page. Find your favorite listening format and click on Rhiannon and you'll hear classic Nicks.

No, no, it was something I was quoted as saying at work. I'm so, so, ashamed. I only hope that Mom can forgive me. I didn't want to be quoted by DHS. I honestly don't want anything to do with DHS. Then again, I might well be the on 'Catter who has ever made the Department of Homeland Security's daily bulletin, at least in a good way. Others may have made it in, well, other ways.

Well, I can wear sackcloth and pour ashes (cold) over my head and walk barefoot through the town lugging a 40-pound candle and stop every hundred meters to beg forgiveness from those around me and invite them to flagellate me with a whip of leather cords tied around pieces of lead shot.

I am so, so, sorry, Mom. As a penance I'll let Amos be your favorite for a while.

No, Shatner is not a Mudcat icon. He is a Mudcat sno-cone. A grape Mudcat sno-cone with a dash of pineapple, to be exact. It is much cooler to be a Mudcat sno-cone than a Mudcat icon. About seventy degrees (Fahrenheit) cooler.

Strange, I can't find Martin Gibson's photos in the member photos section...

I looked up Amos's, though, and yes, you do appear to have a flat chest. You're naturally thin, like me, so neither one of us has "man boobs". Just tiny little dots.

Amos, I find this perpetual hostility toward Shatner unbecoming on your part. The Shatman is a Mudcat icon by now, and deservedly so. Therefore I say cease and desist your unholy verbal war against him. It is mean-spirited and it smacks of rank prejudice to me. Shatner has never done anything to harm you or your family, and he has entertained millions. Give the poor man a break.

So he lost a lot of hair. So what? Most men do. So he put on weight. So what? Most people do.

As for this thread, it's been out of control ever since its inception.

I'm sorry to confess, Mike, that until this thread got so wildly out of control, I had never heard of you either. But I have tried hard to make up for that oversight by writing paeans to you.

Now, RR, what is a "man boob"? In Shatner's case I think "is" would be the preferable verb. I have wee little dots on my flat and rippling chest -- do they qualify? Does Rapaire? Is BWL one? Little Hawk didn't used to be one, but he went through changes. That's why he fell so hard for that overweight has-been, what's his name, that he always goes on about.

Now when you get over gazing at that and realize that she has dated Shatner, but NOT you...

Yes, when you get over it...then go out and rent the obscure movie "Impulse" from 1974, one of Shatner's most cleverly acted gems of cinematic history, but a movie so subtle in its sendup of popular mores that it was completely misunderstood and mostly ignored by the general public, and savaged by reviewers, like this doofus...

"William Shatner stars in this hilarious, post Star Trek, psychological "thriller" about a playboy who has one big problem, he can't help killing all the women he falls in love with. You see, when he was a little boy he caught his mommy having sex with a crazed Vietnam vet. This bothered little Shatner, causing him to stab the bad man to death with a sword. Well now little Shatner is all grown up, complete with Dolomite wardrobe and smooth moves, and he is ready to take out his psychological trauma on every skirt he sees. Directed by Floridian exploitation great William Grefe, this amazing decent into career suicide is a must see for fans of William Shatner. Co-starring Harold Sakata, better known as Odd Job from the James Bond film Goldfinger, Impulse features some of the most amazingly bad acting ever caught on film. The scenes with Shatner and Sakata catching up on old times are stupefying in their ineptness and equally hilarious."

Poor man! He just didn't get it, obviously. Well, that's the way it is with genius like Shatner's. It leaves most people just at a loss, because it boldly goes where none have dared go before!

Does Shatner have a girl friend? Does he had butter and agitate violently, and if so, isn't he a bit old for that sort of goings-on? Why, the man (I'm assuming that Shatner is male, although thankfully I have no direct, first-hand proof either way) must be well over 75! Yes, yes, I know he might look younger, but you know, "What price goat glands?" and, of course, cosmetic surgery can do absolute wonders these days.

And I think I remember that she might have perhaps maybe have fallen off the page, but that was early on and she was promptly rescued from The Waters Of Oblivion. I think that Bee-Dubya-Ell might have been the one who plunged, without regard for himself, into the Stygian darkness Beyond The End Of Threads, where the waters of Lethe erase the memories of Threads Gone By, and pulled Mom, coughing and sputtering, safely Up.

Then again, it might have been someone else.

I have a friend named Kevin Kilmer, but the last poem he wrote was

Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
I really stink
And so do you.

Knowing that he would never write a better bit o' verse he gave up the poetry game and went into a cloister. Shortly thereafter he was forcibly ejected for putting the moves on the novice nuns and, mostly, because he was a Protestant. But he picked himself up, dusted himself off, and like the real man he is, threw a tantrum about how unfair it all was. At that point a window opened high in the cloister wall and he looked up to see the lovely face of Novice Clotilda staring down at him and she threw him a love token so that he would always remember her and what might have been.

Cleaning off the contents of the chamber pot as best he could he made his way back to civilization, such as it is, and started a new life as a guttersnipe.

Mom, it's storming again. I have lots of trees, but I'd really rather mow the grass than cut up broken trees. If I need any assistance, I know a guy from Floribama who is expert at cutting up storm-damaged trees. . .

I THINK that I shall never see
A woodheap lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the my neighbor's garden's best;

A tree that doesn't look so Good today,          5
And lifts her leafy limbs from clay;

A tree that may in summer wear
A twist of fencing in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who closely lives now with link-chain.   10

Fence posts may come from foolish me,
But only God can break a tree.

found in the personal notes of Joyce Kilmer's logger brother, Jessie Kilmer.
