I beg to differ, Bunn. All you have to do is learn how to do a perfect imitation of the "click-pshew" sound of a can opener piercing a can. Then, name your cat "Click-Pshew". He'll come every time.

You expected cats to come when called? That would be your mistake....

If you tried the correct call, like leaving some very nice meat unguarded in the kitchen, then they'll come running. Their names? No chance!

Spices automatically make me think of Cajun cooking. If it were my dog I'd name it "Gumbo".

I once had two kittens. I named one God. I named the other Dammit. When I called out, "GodDAMMIT!" they both ran away. I think they were retarded or something.

Shilling (west coast)
or
McCormick (east coast)

ala

Best Foods (west coast)
Hellmans (east coast)

I'll leave what to call the holes she digs in the backyard to your imagination....

If not Gluon, how about Meson? Or Electron (as in the play "Mourning Becomes Electron"). Or Positron? Or Boson? But if you must use spice, I vote for asafitida. Just imagine the neighbors looks! "Here, Ass, come on girl, get IN here, you, Ass...."

I didn't add fenugreek to my list because it might give away that I was referring to an Indian cookbook to get some of those spellings. (I was--I couldn't remember how to spell asafetida).

I could make a generalized spice reference and name her Masalla.

How about Coriander?

You mentioned chili pepper. After your SS prezzies to me earlier this year, I think that would be very apt!

Curry.
Anise.
Annatto.
Bay.
Fennegeek.
Dill.
Paprika.
Parsley.
Wasabi.

I think that Fennegeek would be good. You could shorten it to "Geek."

Whatever I call them, I'll certainly NEVER make the mistake of cramming these two lab-sized dogs into a single spaniel-sized cage.

Nutmeg
Cardamom
Ginger
Paprika
Mace
Asafetida
Clove
Chili Pepper
Fennel
Poppy
Pomegranate

One dog, so many possible names. . . (neighbors have a dog named Ginger, so I should probably skip that one).

Well, Maggie, since you've already named one dog after a spice you should stick with the same theme. Just don't name the new dog "Cumin". It'd be too confusing for Cinnamon if you were always calling "Cumin, Cinnamon!" Poor thing'd be going "But I'm already in! Has this woman lost her mind?" Kinda like the guy who named his dog "Heel"....

Folks who don't know what a gluon (as opposed to Gluon) is wouldn't understand anyway. Folks who know what a gluon is will be confirmed in their opinion that you're nuts.

Either way, you needn't explain.

With your luck with computers, BWL, I think you'll just jinx us for Oct. 19. But we shall see.

One day and counting until the new pooch arrives. My kids and I talked about names, and we even mouthed "Gluon" a few times, but it just won't fit, because for the next dozen years or more I'd be explaining an inside joke for an odd name. Since the first dog is named Cinnamon, perhaps we'll name this merle heeler mix "Pepper" and I'll have my own Spice Girls. :)

Gluon can still come and play.

The Mudcat was down for the entire afternoon yesterday. So, for the second year in a row, I was unable to talk like a pirate on International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Last year it was due to Hurricane Ivan. Next year my computer will be broken or something. It seems to be my fate to not talk like a pirate.

So, since it appears that the Universe doesn't want me to talk like a pirate, I have proclaimed October 19th National Talk Like a Redneck Day.

North Texas beat both Idaho and Florida with a high of 100 today. Same predicted for tomorrow. And Tuesday. Sheesh. It's autumn in a few days, and we're still getting this nonsense weather-wise.

I was out in it today visiting the Humane Society. Adopted a sweet little pooch to keep my current sweet pooch company. They suggested I bring my dog down, and several people there wanted to adopt her! (Pitbulls--you either love them or hate them, I guess, but those who asked and got a chance to pet her took home plenty of dog slobber on their hands and feet). She met my intended pup and they were immediately nuzzling and licking and rolling over each other, both flopping down in submissive positions. I asked about three dogs, and the guy who walks the dogs said this one might be aggressive, but when he thought about it, "maybe she was just so happy to see the other dog she overwhelmed her." I think that was the case, and for an active dog, I think she has met her match in my pooch. The one at the shelter will be spayed tomorrow and come home on Wednesday. We'll think of a new name, the one she has isn't great. Our first dog is called Cinnamon Sugar. My kids are quick--Caroline suggested we name the new one "Burnt Toast."

Humph. Idaho is more than potatoes, much, much, more. Why, Idaho is the second-largest producer of lentils in the United States! And quite a lot of barley is also grown here -- unfortunately, most if it is then sold to Budweiser (the grain deserves a better fate). But, if you absolutely MUST identify Idaho with spuds, this version tops them all.

I have returned.

By dint of great personal comfort I have avoided frostbite, chilblains, trenchfoot, ingrown toenail, corns, bunions, and the heartbreak of psoriassis. The vegetables are safely stowed, and I purchased a weeder I can use standing upright. The snow has stopped for a while, and the ice is no thicker than it was when I went abroad, although there is a 50% chance that snow will fall this afternoon and tomorrow.

So I have returned. Please, no accolades, no triumphal processions, no speeches, no national days of rejoicing, for I am but a humble, shy fellow from the Great Midwest.

It is Sunday morn. It is 34 degrees F. outside. It will get up to 69 degrees F. outside today.

This is a good day for staying inside, 'cause I never felt more like slingin' the booze. But I can't do that. I must don parka and mukluks and fare forth into the clear and sunny (albeit cool) weather. I shall not be stayed by williwaws, chinooks, blizzards, dark of night, golf balls the size of hail stones, molten lava flows, giant locusts with flowing hair and the face of women, or the Five Horseman of the Apocalypse (War, Famine, Plague, Death, and Embarassing Itch). Nay, I shall go into harm's way, and I shall take unto myself the Mission of going to the store for the salad greens and vegetables I did not get yesterday. And I shall do this in the bright sunshine morning, in the full and complete knowledge that with everybody else going to church I shall find a good selection of both food and parking spaces.

And so, go I shall. Farewell, and in the future, if you think of me, know that there is some corner of a foriegn field that is forever England.

Interesting commentary, Rapaire.

Note the subtle differences between:

Yes.

Yes!

Yes?

and

Yes...

And that's without using all caps, boldface, Italics, colors or any HTML tricks. The possibilities for subtle (and not so subtle) commentary using just that single word are simply astounding!

Now, at this point one would expect to see something like a scrolling multicolored blinking "YES!!!" in the largest font available, but that would be just so predictable, wouldn't it?

Speaking of Torpid Liver, Bee-dubya-ell, it appears you aren't the only person who remembers those ads on the tables in Wendy's. In fact, this person named a punk band after them!

Ultimate Punk Band Name

Scott thinks that he has found the ultimate punk band name. Bah! We came up with the ultimate punk band name a long time ago.

Remember when Wendy's used to have tables with those old 1890's catalog ads on them? Never mind if you don't. Trust me.

Anyway, we were chompin' on a double-cheeeeeburgah one day when we saw two phrases that had been accidentally cropped from their ads: torpid liver. artificial limbs.

In a flash, our next band name came to us...

TORPID LIVER AND THE ARTIFICIAL LIMBS!

Guess you had to be there...

Remember when every Wendy's restaurant in the country had identical Formica-covered tabletops covered in a print that consisted of facsimiles of old newspaper advertisements? In among the ads for hoopskirts, buttonhooks and the like was one that simply said "Torpid Liver". That was all.

For a while, it was a mystery to me whether "torpid liver" was a product for sale or an ailment to be cured. So, after reading the words "Torpid Liver" on a Wendy's tabletop for the 357th time I did a little research and found that it was an ailment. At that point I felt extremely slighted because Wendy's had chosen to use only the headline from the advertisement while omitting the rest of the ad copy which doubtlessly extolled the merits of some product that would cure those afflicted with torpid liver and, though I didn't suffer from torpid liver at the time, it wasn't impossible that I might be so afflicted at some time in the future. Did the Wendy's people not realize that lack of the information they had so callously omitted could be a life-or-death matter for some future sufferer of torpid liver?

I would like to say that, in response to Wendy's lack of foresight, I have boycotted their restaurants for years, but it would be a lie. It really didn't make a damned bit of difference.

Oops. Sorry. I forgot that momma sometimes got carried away, being as how she was so danged smart and all. She was talkin' 'bout her growin' up:

"Not so was I," quoth Medb; "the High King of Erin himself was my sire, Eocho Fedlech ('the Enduring') son of Finn, by name, who was son of Findoman, son of Finden, son of Findguin, son of Rogen Ruad ('the Red'), son of Rigen, son of Blathacht, son of Beothacht, son of Enna Agnech, son of Oengus Turbech. Of daughters, had he six: Derbriu, Ethne and Ele, Clothru, Mugain and Medb, myself, that was the noblest and seemliest of them.

'Twas I was the goodliest of them in bounty and gift-giving, in riches and treasures. 'Twas I was best of them in battle and strife and combat. 'Twas I that had fifteen hundred royal mercenaries of the sons of aliens exiled from their own land, and as many more of the sons of freemen of the land. And there were ten men with every one of these hirelings, and nine men with every hireling, and eight men with every hireling, and seven men with every hireling, and six men with every hireling, and five men with every hireling, and four men with every hireling, and three men with every hireling, and two men with every hireling, and one hireling with every hireling. These were as a standing household-guard," continued Medb; "hence hath my father bestowed one of the five provinces of Erin upon me, even the province of Cruachan; wherefore 'Medb of Cruachan' am I called.

Men came from Finn son of Ross Ruad ('the Red'), king of Leinster, to seek me for a wife, and I refused him; and from Carbre Niafer ('the Champion') son of Ross Ruad ('the Red'), king of Temair, to woo me, and I refused him; and they came from Conchobar son of Fachtna Fathach ('the Mighty'), king of Ulster, and I refused him in like wise. They came from Eocho Bec ('the Small'), and I went not; for 'tis I that exacted a singular bride-gift, such as no woman before me had ever required of a man of the men of Erin, namely, a husband without avarice, without jealousy, without fear.

Medb, she said, was the oldtime way of sayin' "Esther," which was her name.
