Please tell it was at least black.

I was just thinking... nearly 47k and it seems like just ten years ago this thread was born... er hatched.

My MIL lived in it for many years and helped build the church, hauling bricks and stuff I suppose. Irish were always good hod carriers. She considered it "her" parish church. The Msgr. is just too damned full of himself -- I told him last night about the pastor back home telling me I'd make a good heretic because I was too well educated Catholicism and I was intelligent. This dude (considers himself Rome-bound, I guess) said, "We'll try to prevent that." I mentioned I wanted to avoid the fate of Savanarola and he said that was a good idea -- I don't think he knows who that was, but it put him on notice not to screw around with me.

Pat's already messed with him -- one of the gift bearers is Episcopalian, and other participants aren't "adults."

He wore a collar and soutain to the funeral home!

Sounds like you are maybe going to the wrong parish, Rap.

I'm sorry about Aunt Ruth, Rapparee, and I hope for the best (whatever that may be) with Martha.

Just stick out your sword cane and trip the Monsignor as he comes down the aisle if he gets out of hand.

Eiseley

I'll get through the Mass and stuff tomorrow okay if I can keep myself and/or Pat from killing the pompous, self-important and self-impressed Monsignor who's in charge of the parish here.

Rap, this is a difficult time for the family, but it is probably also when interesting stories come to the surface.

Ya know...I don't like dogs much, mainly because they usually don't like me. What this means is: I am a lot less likely to visit you now, Amos. Too bad, isn't it?

Maggie and me are back from the big park down the road some; she gets all worked up when I swing my ball-thrower at her, and dances on her hind feet with her tongue lolling out and her ears flapping up and down like lily pads in a high breeze. It is something. Then I let her fly,and that dog transforms into a greased bullet, takes off like something shot from a gun, and overruns the ball just before it disappears into the canyon at the end of the park. She sends up a cloud of dust screeching to a halt and turns and pounces on it as though it were tryig to escape. I tell ya, it is something to see.

Half the time she remembers to bring it all the way back and the cycle repeats. But other times, she just forgets what we are doing and runs off to smell a pee-stain in the grass or something, and forgets the meaning of the word "ball". Just escapes her mind altogether until I walk over and pick it up. Then she gets interested again.

I think she is training me. Not sure how I feel about that, though.

My sympathies to Rapparree and the slow dance of Arlington. RIP.

NB; After Mass tomorrow lunch at Jim & Kelly's house, luncheon here after burial on the 23rd.

The funeral home things for my Aunt Ruth were last evening, Mass and burial today.

Penelope Rutledge stood me up. We had a date, but I guess I didn't offer her enough money so she didn't show up. I mean, her boots and miniskirt told you quite plainly that she was a "business girl" and very much for hire.

I'm just glad I didn't pay in advance.

Amos, Penelope does what she does, and I do what I do, and it's 2 separate matters. My actions are not contingent upon her approval...nor the contrary. You might say that we live in different worlds.

In his youthful attempts at poetry he was remarkably prescient about MOAB and all that. The first electronic computers had only been around for a decade or so, let alone the Internet, Mudcat, and MOM. But I quibble . . .

Well, you should be aware that Mortimer is a direct great-uncle of one of your favorite Britons, the ne-er-do-well spendthrift Miss Penelop Rutledge, and he holds the purse strings of the ancient family estate. So I would be a bit cautious about slagging his youthful efforts at poetry.

That brief statement by Rumi is brilliant, and right on the mark. He says so much in so few words.

And thanks for the explanation about the insensate gelidity.

With thirty posts and three to make
Before the next of K doth make
ANother milestone, proud to sway
Above our Mother's tortuous way,
We each most come down from the shelf,
And look each deep within himself
To find the power, strength and will
These thirty posts and three to fill.
Thus each according to his station
Must plumb his far imagination
And boldly post, and bravely say,
"For Mom! On tot he next of Kay!"

Insensate gelidity is unfeeling coldness, Little Hawk--the sort of non-communication which characterizes the past gatekeepers of which I spoke.

I don't know anything about the shifting seas of the publishing industry, Amos. ;-) But you are quite right that the world is not what it was. It's becoming more horrifying, decadent, and weird with each passing year...

Now, can you tell me what "insensate gelidity" means?

I presume that insensate means "unfeeling" or "incapable of empathy", but I have no idea what "gelidity" means.

Screw you for an insensitive lout, LH. Anyone who knows anything about the shifting seas of the publishing industry knows that self-publishing is not the same thing that vanity publishing once was, a vaguely embarrassing compromise. Your remark is like referring to legs as "limbs" because it is improper to speak of appendages directly.

Check out Smashwords.com for a ream of knowledgeable information on developments over the last four years. Anyway, that is the direction I am going in at present, having grown weary of the insensate gelidity of the past gatekeepers. The world is not what it was, amigo!

For the serious, hardcore stoner pot is a full-blown religion, complete with sacred rituals, creeds, and holy relics. I knew a whole set of those people back in the early 70s, and boy did they have a silly lifestyle! ;-) Harmless, mind you. But silly.

Every day was basically built around preparing pot to smoke, smoking it, discussing it, finding it, sharing it, selling it (in some cases), telling stories about past experiences with it, talking about the different varieties you could get and the different stone they provided, and assorted foolishness along the same lines.

98% of serious hardcore stoners are males. That tells you something right there. The 2% of serious hardcore stoners who are females are pretty weird chicks and are basically beyond hope as far as I'm concerned, but since they comprise a very small slice of the demographic, who really cares? Suffice it to say that they are straaaange, and it's best not to get into a relationship with one of them.

Most hardcore stoners also smoke cigarettes (which stink even worse than pot does and do you more harm too), but there are some hardcore stoners who realize how repulsive and harmful cigarettes are...and they only smoke pot or hash. I would call these people the "pot purists", and they usually have very mystical notions about pot, figuring that it is the one natural remedy that will cure virtually ALL ills. They use it to cure cancer, reduce tension, promote better sleep patterns, prevent acne, shrink hemorrhoids, and avoid unpleasant situations...like work!

They are absolutely incensed over the persecution of the innocent pot smoker by government and police forces....and well they should be! Never has so much attention been given so uselessly to anything so trivial in the history of law enforcement.

I sympathize with the ire of the religious pot smoker toward these oppressive government actions, because I think that if people want to do something silly and basically pretty harmless to themselves, they should bloody well be allowed to without interference from the justice system!!!!

And there you have it. ;-D

****

Amos, you didn't answer my last question. That's 1 demerit. No gold star for you today!

It's not just that which causes blindness, LH. As Amos (known as "Old One-Eye" among the gentry on the docks of San Diego) knows all too well -- you know the old quotation, "I'll only do it until I'm blind in ONE eye."

Was that an extremely verbose way of saying, "I'm going into vanity publishing."? Or have I misinterpreted your meaning? In any case, I do wish you luck. Watch out for rattlers, Gila Monsters, and hostile tribesmen along the way. If you should run into a fast-talking fellow with a pencil-thin mustache and bottles of "Hagman's Peerless Health Elixir" to sell you, use extreme caution. That stuff can cause blindness!

Mudflanks McFuzzbutt is an inspired name for a dog, Amos. Specially a dog that might have accompanied William Wallace. You should end up fit as the proverbial fiddle at this rate.

What I need is to be required to walk Winona a few miles each day. That would definitely work.

Today I walked four miles half of it up hill, without even stopping for breath, under the inspired and insistent leadership of Mudflanks McFuzzbutt, also known as Maggie Darlin' Dogg.

Thinks are definitely looking up since the darkest depth -- I have been off cigarettes for two weeks andf feel about twenty pounds lighter.

Looking good!
