Rap... I assume "concrete" means the foundation. Even though it is common practice to apply two (yeah, right... they onely ever apply one) coats of bituminus paint (now illegal in some jurisdictions) to concrete foundations below grade, unless your dwelling was built lately and expansion joints were properly installed, you WILL get water in the crete. The water will wick up and push the paint off the crete. Here's the bad part. When the paint peels, it doesn't ALL peel and water (rain) gets behind the paint. It saturates the crete. The crete freezes. The crete spalls. Yer fucked.

Now, epoxy, well THAT won't peel. And, it will hold the wicked water in the crete. And, the crete will spall (fucked again) more slowly depending on the thickness of the wall and other avenues of water escape such as at the framewall sill plate (if the sill plate does not have a proper gasket it could rot and you'll be really fucked) or on the interior of the wall where it will leave efflorescence.

On the other hand, you may never have a problem with it but I would give that about a 5% probability.

There is an "up side". At your age and with your money, paint it. It'll look nice for a few years if you scrape and wire brush it and repaint as required... usually every year.

Good luck with the plumbers, Stilly.
Too bad you couldn't go on the vessel, Amos.
Tote that barge, lift that bale, Rapparee.

I'm off to bed.

Eiseley

I am strongly tempted to paint the brick on the sides and back of my house. The front is an attractive limestone - why they didn't do the entire thing in rock is a puzzle to me. The bricks need sealing/re-pointing, so it won't happen any time soon. A friend whose husband is an architect described my house as "Queen Anne in front, Maryann in back."

I think there is a dead mouse under my dishwasher. Anyone need any rancid fishing bait or to put it in a crawdad trap - it's yours if you want to move the dishwasher to retrieve it. (I need to call a plumber also, so I may just have him look to be sure everything is okay before pushing it back in.) The plumber must finish his work before my basil fills that side bed. No way do I want one of those electric snake machines in my herb garden. Best finish the work before the seeds sprout.

Sure, I know your plans. Just outside Canadian waters you lead a mutiny and take over the ship. Running down the coast of North America you loot, pillage, and burn (in that order) towns and ships, then swing east and do the same in the Caribbean, then the same down the coast of South America. Then across the broad Atlantic to the western coast of Africa, where your deviltry is repeated in place after place. Eventually, you set sail for Madagascar where you live palatially on your ill-gotten loot.

Don't try to teach your old grampa to suck eggs...I mean, I know what you were up to!

Well, it didn't pan--I volunteered the wife and meself to crew on a schooner leaving Toronto in May up the Saint Lawrence and bound over Labrador to Greenland. Would have made an interesting sabbatical.

Whew! I just submitted the last paper I will have to write for my MLS! Now I can finally turn to more exciting endeavors---like finishing reading Amos's brainchild.

I went through that loop a few years ago--shoveling and sifting tons of gravel from the front yard. Our landscaping is now done and in bloom, I think...

Probably related to Sawney Bean's bunch.

Well, I'll make the announcement here.

Next week the roses in front of our house will be transplanted (professionally, I kill things). We will then power-wash the hard-water scale off the bricks, probably get the concrete painted (Pat vetoed pink camouflage for some reason), and the professional-type landscaping will begin. When we are done later this Spring it will include an entirely new look for both the front and back of the house, two new patio doors, and two new pedestrian doors.

In the meantime I've been removing landscaping gravel -- literally by hand -- so we can get new mulch. I am, to make an understatement, a bit sore and will continue to be as the gravel is relocated.

Anyone who wants to come by and help....

Guess I've been brushing my teeth in it so long I don't notice it anymore. That McBride clan is a piece of work, though. Why, if there were just a smidgen more credibility to their phantasmoagoric quality of being, I'd say a ballad should be written 'bout them all, but I ain't gonna get sucked in.

No, I've tasted both. The San Diego water (out of the tap, not out of the chilled five-gallon bottle over in the corner) tasted like dirt.

The vector of Rapparee's creativity plotted against decency is definitely the set {X<0}. Our water is not that bad, probably on a par with Texas'.

Eww. Better use an extra dab of toothpaste, Amos. It'll help cover the taste of the water. (As I recall, San Diego water tastes pretty vile already.)

Hi MOM! I know this isn't BS - but....

"2:46: Aftershocks: Stories from the Japan Earthquake" is a kindle book produced by a twitter community in the two weeks post earthquake in Japan - all profits go to Japan Earthquake release.

I'm not sure if this counts if you purchase through the MUDCAT Amazon link but it can't hurt...contributing twice with one purchase as it were....

My niece lives in Tokyo with her husband as does his family; and a short piece by her is included in it.

Wonderful palindrome, Rapparee! This one, though, is 4+0+4+0+5, which equals 13, which happens to be the same number as the date today: (13). And I just came home from a soggy but successful open house for our bookmobile in which 40+40+5 people came (85) and ate 404+05 cookies (409), adding a collective 40405 calories to the total intake of people in Pocatello. So there.

It obviously made you mentally agile, if haphazard. Being hit on the head is a subjective exposure to the endemic overlay of irrationality superimposed on complexity, a wicked combination sure to defeat the sturdiest of souls.

Because they're so big and heavy, Amos. I've seen some that had to be carried on a truck. They're like anvils. In fact, some of them have little anvils attached. Personally, I like anvils. I used to know a girl named Ann Vills. She wore her hair in pigtails and had freckles and could run faster than her brothers. Then one day the family moved away and I've never seen her again. Which was okay, because every time she saw me she'd beat me up and laugh at me. I was told that was just her way of showing she liked me, but I dunno -- being hit on the head with a piece of galvanized pipe just doesn't do much for me.
