IT depends on where you get the snails, and whose liver is dumplinged.

ANyway, Rapp, I have all respect for the alleged poverty of your alleged childhood. You are truly the Munchausen of the Have Nots.

*grin* funny to see liver dumpling soup and snail soup used as examples of poverty - because I've seen recipes for them from VERY posh restaurants....

You ever eat liver noodle soup, Amos? Or snail soup? We had them all the time when I was growing up, because we were very, very, very, very poor. We were so poor that the church mice were looked down their noses at us. So poor that we eat cow pie for a special treat. So poor that beggars and tramps gave US crumbs of bread. We didn't even have our own pants until we went into the military...we had to share the same pair for years and years, which got tricky at school and church. We were so poor we not only didn't go to movies and have a radio or television, we hadn't even heard about them.

And yet, it built character and made my siblings and me what we are today: eccentric as all hell, but never boring.

Sounds to me like your ex-in-laws are lucky to have you around.

What a shock to see such schlock!
Die Bukmann mocks and shocks with talk
Of German stock
And stock of Bock
And some ham hock!
Come, bring a lock
Or tick his tock
Or fleche his nock
Or trim his cock
Decor his dock
'Cuz wot da fock
To make folks gawk
At gutter talk
of bock and hock!
This bookish jock
With all his squawk
Must walk the walk!!

What kind of German soup? Leberknödelsuppe? Aalsuppe? Schneckensuppe? Or is it soup made from Germans? If the last I suggest you cook it thoroughly in a bock stock with a ham hock.

Granny is at home. (Not the Eternal Home---yet). I'm a bit removed because I'm the ex-inlaw, but that actually helps because I was able to do the arrangements for the eventual cremation and be the liason with the funeral home because the others just couldn't handle it. Tonight I've made some delicious German soup and will serve it up in a few minutes to the hungry crowd.

"She knows the family has "given permission" and she is surrounded with love."

That is the greatest gift of all at such a time.

Is your grandmother in a nursing home or a private home? It's a somber time, unavoidable, so one best handled with respect and grace. Happened a couple of weeks ago with an old family friend - there can be complications due to religion (not surprising, I suppose) and that made for some angst, but he died peacefully.

Amos, did you tell the San Diego gendarmes about Don and Shane? Were they the culprits in the house, do you think?

She knows the family has "given permission" and she is surrounded with love. She can leave anytime now, restfully and at peace.

Ah, dear. Coraggio. THe passage will happen whether it is welcomed or detested. SOmewhere in between is best, a compassionate tolerance for what is. Communication continues regardless in these relationships. Stay clear!

Hmmm, that is one option, Rap. But I think I'd get there faster if I could feckin' flap.

On another note: I did make it home in time for Tom to catch Granny in one of her last lucid moments. Hospice has now been in, and they set up a hospital bed as well as arranged for some morphine. Those two things alone have helped immensely. I made dinner for everyone tonight (except for Granny, she's stopped eating), and they ate in shifts. All in all, it is a solemn but not miserable time. It would be so much sadder and more poignant if she weren't 87 and very anxious to go.

Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken Aktien-Gesellschaft (German Weapons and Munitions public limited company), known as DWM, was an arms company in Imperial Germany created in 1896 when Ludwig Loewe & Company united its weapons and ammunition production facilities within one company. In 1896 Loewe founded Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken with a munitions plant in Karlsruhe (Baden), formerly Deutsche Metallpatronenfabrik Lorenz, and the weapons plant in Berlin.

All the very best von und zus were connected.

It's obvious that he was reaching for his DWM and Frankieboy was about to taste lead. You know them gun totin Windthorst lads eh.

Family secrecy prevents me from giving a full answer to your inquiry, Amos. Please note, though, that this "Frankenstein" is a "von und zu" -- and those were not uneducated people and they usually had at least a schloss, if not their own castle.

Bedad, indeed; is this Baron Frankenstein the same Frankenstein as the Frankenstein who made literary history as the Doctor Frankenstein who created Frankenstein's monster, the very monster who came to be called "Frankenstein" in the popular vernacular, however inaccurately since the Frankenstein name was correctly applied to Doctor Frankenstein rather than Frankenstein's monster? THAT Frankenstein? Or some other Frankenstein?

Though I hear that Napolean was actually about 5'8" so not a short as people suggest, there does seem to be a similarity between these short men and posing with a hand in an odd position in a jacket. Or is he scratching?

MOM! I scored a big box of fancy ostrich feathers for Moonglow at an estate sale this afternoon. A couple hundred dollars worth (many still in wrappers with prices) for $2.50. Great material for a costume-making kid with a hat-making class this semester!

If you're very lucky, maybe she'll make a buccaneer hat for any of our pirate or sword-fighter types who require large chapeaus with gaudy feathers.

I wish I could be inanimate,
banged-up and appreciated
for all my surface qualities
without ethics getting in the way. I seem to remember
being ethical. I seem to act along some kind of line
albeit a kinky one. I wonder when kinky became
pornographic and whether that aspect is
subtractable. I donŐt remember my grammar
rules. I donŐt think English is very good
for a certain kind of inventioning. I gather
some readers donŐt like being
confronted with the language in every word.
I want to be a word. I would be abstract
with an inscrutable ending.

Forgetfulness

by Billy Collins

The name of the author is the first to go
followed obediently by the title, the plot,
the heartbreaking conclusion, the entire novel
which suddenly becomes one you have never read,
never even heard of,

as if, one by one, the memories you used to harbor
decided to retire to the southern hemisphere of the brain,
to a little fishing village where there are no phones.

Long ago you kissed the names of the nine Muses goodbye
and watched the quadratic equation pack its bag,
and even now as you memorize the order of the planets,

something else is slipping away, a state flower perhaps,
the address of an uncle, the capital of Paraguay.

Whatever it is you are struggling to remember,
it is not poised on the tip of your tongue,
not even lurking in some obscure corner of your spleen.

It has floated away down a dark mythological river
whose name begins with an L as far as you can recall,
well on your own way to oblivion where you will join those
who have even forgotten how to swim and how to ride a bicycle.

No wonder you rise in the middle of the night
to look up the date of a famous battle in a book on war.
No wonder the moon in the window seems to have drifted
out of a love poem that you used to know by heart.
