So laying drunk in gutters, covered with what can only kindly be called "debris," comes naturally to you, Amos? I used to be quite a wastrel, but I was taught to be so. Lord, man, you are a Natural Talent!

I think the reason Mom gives Rapp such good advice is that she feels sorry for his tongue. In any case, I never got taught those things, the way she explained "Shut up" to him. My upbriniging was much less kind and considerate. Keep that in mind the next time you go casting aspersions, oh Scurrilous One.

Good Lord, Mom! You were second from the very bottom! You know better than to go slumming like THAT! Laying in the gutter covered with peels and worse and stinking of cheap gin -- it that any sort of example to give your kid...well, Amos already does that, I guess. Quite often, in fact. But the rest of us are well-mannered and upstanding citizens, just as you taught us to be. Don't go letting us down now and...what do you mean, "Just shut the hell up, kid!"?

Amos, it's called (by the Mayo Clinic, among other reputable establishments) "Hairy Black Tongue." Oh, yeah -- it goes away without treatment and you get it sort of the same way you get Hairy Green Palms.

I had that after I got Screeched In (properly... not this whimpy tourist type Screeching In.) It comes back now and then.

Is that the tale of his travels down the unmeasured river that he barely survived? Grand story.

Well, I still have the pipes. I used to be able to play music on them, but I'm really, really out of practice. They're up on top of the bookcase, next to the toilet bowl.

No "worldly appointments" (or interest in) but the dog to lie at my feet whilst I enjoy a rousing tome of Teddy Roosevelt's adventures in Africa I can manage. Two dogs, in fact. And since it's a cold night out, they'll be in their beds, not at my feet. :)

It's fine indeed that you have such worldly appointments to give you airs, sirrah, saving you the trouble of doing it yourself.

By the way, Eiseley has been in my office several times and the trophies have never bothered her one whit. They are all tastefully done and, with the dark walnut wainscoting, paneling, bookcases, gun racks, and fireplace give the place quite an air of the well-bred and well-read gentleman. It's a pity I gave up smoking my pipes and don't have a dog to lie at my feet whilst I enjoy a rousing tome of Teddy Roosevelt's adventures in Africa, smoke a good shag tobacco, and enjoy a fine single malt or cognac while the snow gently falls outside.

HAPPY AS A CLAM
A clam has only two goals in life: to eat and to have sex, hence the phrase "happy as a clam". Unfortunately, as the clam has no brain, it derives no real pleasure from either food or sex. The clam is a chemically driven shell full of salty flesh that exists to procreate. The clam's remarable fruitfulness serves not only to reproduce itself, bit also to feed countless organisms in the seaside food chain.

A clam two or three inches in diameter would probably be three to five years old.
It takes about 25 to 28 months for clam larvae to reach a market size clam.
Undisturbed, clams live to the thirty-three to thirty-six year old range.
Clams feed year-round, though they feed less in winter because they need less energy.

(accoring to Mac's Back Door Oyster Bar and Grill, anyway).

Woodcock are secretive creatures, possessing uncanny restraint and such confidence in their camouflage that they will sit still even when a predator ? or a hunter's boot ? is inches away.

Their migration is equally mysterious. Birds careen south in waves called flights, following the first frosts, migrating south from Canada, Minnesota, Michigan and Maine to their wintering grounds in the American South. They navigate meandering valleys, power lines and highway corridors, ushered along by north winds and guided by a roadmap of fall colors.

The Maine state motto, "Dirigo" (I lead).

The Maine State Flag

On March 21, 1901 the Maine State Legislature passed "An Act to Establish a State Flag." The flag was to include a Pine Tree centered on a buff colored field. Equidistant from the hoist and upper border of the flag a blue polar star was to be displayed.

Interestingly, on February 23, 1909, the State Legislature adopted a new standard, describing the state flag as a display of the Maine coat of arms on a blue field. This is the flag in use today, more or less.

I read your poem, Little Hawk. It was sweet, had the lightness of a tightly wound very short dog. :)

Mike, tell Pat we're behind her 110% - just because she's had the Big C once doesn't mean it doesn't scare the bejeesus out of you the second time round.

Speaking of her quilting, it reminds me that I need to start encroaching on the big cabinet I built for my daughter when she was in high school. It's full of stuff she doesn't use any more - and I want to fill it full of cloth I've forgotten about because it is out of sight in a dresser right now.

If she doesn't beat it, it won't be my fault. She's already whipped the Big C once and she'll do it again. Meanwhile, next Tuesday, the day after the next biopsy, she leaves for the winter quilt retreat in Indiana (she's a charter member); surgery is the day after she gets back.

Gotta gitter done!

SIr,

I had no intention of changing the subject. If, indeed, you feel the basic definition of the universe includes only the space-time continuum, and particles appertaining thereto, then we have a perfect line in the sand which excludes the universe of individual creation, the universe of the non-material, the universe of thought itself, any possibility of elan vital except as a byproduct of matter, and a myriad of other interesting phenomena.

Honi soit qui mal y pense, I guess... no skin off my nose if we want to constrain the universe of discourse to things which discourse not. Seems a bit lame in itself, though. just to echo a crudity. But ya know what? I like you so well, just as you are, that I say Fuggit and withdraw my remarks.

Amos... "Gnu, old friend, if you draw a line in the sand, you can persuade yourself by staying carefully on one side thereof that the universe is made of silicon particles and there is no such thing as liquid."

Pretty lame. I extracate myself from any further discission on the subject. Why bother? If you diss the very basics of the definition of the universe which has been the very basis of many aspects of scientific endeavour and qualitative/quantitative research/theory and discussion by "changing the subject"... why bother?

On a more pertinent note, I wrote a great (I postulate) song about an Irish folk hero of note here in New Brunswick who died helping Irish immigrants get established in the fly infested bog country of my forefathers this eve. I shall set it to Rhan soon. It's far more important than quibbling about the universe.

Gnu, old friend, if you draw a line in the sand, you can persuade yourself by staying carefully on one side thereof that the universe is made of silicon particles and there is no such thing as liquid.

Even a sand-shark would know better, but we of the hominid clan have a peculiar power of selective ignoral.

Oh, fie, Gnu. It may take energy to rearrange particles, but only a live soul can translate that arrangement into information. The notion of information existing without a viewpoint is, to say the least, disingenuous and an absurd reduction to mechanism of that which, in the ultimate analysis cannot be mechanized.

Amos... "The total information is not a function of mass."

Empirically, given that the total of energy and mass in the universe is constant and that it takes energy to produce information, information in the universe is a function of energy and mass.

I am gnu and I support this treatment.

Well, that's fine, thanks for explaining, but there is an even more critical flaw in thenotion of It=mh2/1e79 and your accompanying explanation. One, I might add, which is revelatory in its nature.

The total information in the universe is not a function of mass.
Even if you take the totally wrong-headed approach of using an index of binary bits of data, which is wrong for different reasons, you will not measure the resultant if your algorithm is dependent on mass. First of all, for example, consider that the universe was limited to just one solar system, with one viabler planet, as a thought experiment. Although this would reduce the total mass by several orders of magnitude, it is immediately evident that given the same number life-units viewing the reduced array of mass, the same amount (approaching infinity) of information would be generated in a longer time. Reduce it to one particle in space and the T component also approaches infinity, but the curve of total information still approaches infinity.

But, contrariwise, reduce the number of life units to, say, ten, and leave the universe as it is otherwise, and you will find the curve of total possible information rising to a measurable peak and then falling away!

THerefore, it is clear the approach of a function depending on PLanck's k and mass is doomed to wander forever in the vale of unclarity, shedding only heat and no light.

She's good at holding bags. Also sealing them up with twist-ties. HIGHLY experienced at that.

But you see, Amos, what I'm trying to determine if there is a critical mass of books which will achieve a self-sustaining bibliographical chain reaction. Tempered by "censorship rods" (to prevent an information explosion) this could, eventually, produce all knowledge it is possible for humans to know (and quite a bit of pure bibliographic garbage, which we will have to find someplace to store -- at the moment, talk radio seems the best bet).

This is expressed best in the classic

It=mh2/1e79

That is to say, the total of information (I) in the Universee is equal to the mass of the Universe multiplied by Plank's Constant raised to the second power, divided by the the low end estimate of the mass of the Universe. Of course, this is the Special Theory of Informationity. I'll post the General Theory if you'd beg me to.
