Rent's rule pertains to the organization of computing logic, specifically the relationship between the number of external signal connections to a logic block (i.e., the number of "pins") with the number of logic gates in the logic block, and has been applied to circuits ranging from small digital circuits to mainframe computers.

In the 1960's, E.F. Rent, an IBM employee, found a remarkable trend between the number of pins (terminals T) at the boundaries of integrated circuit designs at IBM and the number of internal components (g), such as logic gates or standard cells. On a log − log plot, these datapoints were on a straight line, implying a power-law relation T = tgp where t and p are constants (p < 1.0, and generally 0.5 < p < 0.8). Rent disclosed his findings in IBM-internal memoranda, but the relation was described in 1971 by Landman and Russo.[1] They performed a hierarchical circuit partitioning in such a way that at each hierarchical level (top-down) the least number of interconnections had to be cut to partition the circuit (in more or less equal parts). At each partitioning step, they noted the number of terminals and the number of components in each partition and then partitioned the sub-partitions further. They found the power law rule applied to the resulting T versus g plot and named it "Rent's rule". It is crucial to recognise that Rent's rule is an empirical result based on observations of existing designs, and therefore it is less applicable to the analysis of non-traditional circuit architectures. Having said that, it does provide a useful framework with which to compare similar architectures.

Once again, the power of Wikipedia shames the power of a normal library, counter-intuitive though that may be. Theorists explain that it is a function of primary and distributed R{x} elements in the informational hierarchy, where R is relative responsibility of the primary (first author) and secondary (administrators or additional authors) elements responsible for the distribution of information x through the network associated with the hierarchy.

Depends on whether you have a landlord or landlady. This Rent's Rule has to do with, ah, length.

I thought Rent's Rule was stated as:

p(r».5m[±d])=w/~L·37D

Restated in plain English, that's:

The probablity of rent being allowed to slide for a half-month (plus or minus a day or so) is equal to one's willingness to have sex with the landlord multiplied by bra size.

No, it's derived from "Duke of Earl." This song opened a gap in the fabric of space-time, affecting everything that came "before" and "after."

It's easier to explain mathematically than in spoken language. Rent's Rule, T = tg^p is a good place to begin understanding what happened, however.

Rapaire, the idea that all music is derived from "Duke of Earl" is such utter unmitigated BS that I won't even dignify it by discussing it here. You should be ashamed of yourself for even suggesting such hogwash.

(Everybody knows that all music is derived from Eddie Cochran's 1958 hit, "Summertime Blues".)

Except that it was derived from "Oh, Donna" and "La Bamba".

Just to change the subject a little bit, I've made an amazing musical discovery, one that could change the music as we know it.

ALL music and songs are derived from Gene Chandler's 1962 hit, "Duke of Earl."

Change the notes a little bit, change the tempo slightly, modify the key, and you have every piece of music ever written or which will ever be written, from "Thus Spake Zarathustra" to "Good Golly Miss Molly" to "Greenland Whale Fisheries" to plainsong to Bach's "Concerto For A Whole Lot Of Winds And Percussion."

I think some of them are genuinely misguided, convinced the national government should be a general store with a cracker barrel and a few passers-by dropping in from time to time.

It is understandable to want to strengthen individual rights and State's rights. But with our present population and situation--a web-connected international force dependent on playing in the world -- it just doesn't work out that way.

I detect a lot of projectile shit coming from the likes of Glenn Beck and Rush L. It hits everything. Blinds people to the truth. (All of this is generated because of a huge fear of "tit for tat." The Bushites treated so many people so badly for so long that they're now afraid of retribution.)

If they REALLY internalize the stuff it won't come out their heads, but it WILL project them immense distances. If you are one of them try not to face anything solid.

There's a critical mass of Rush Limbaugh and his ilk that can be stuffed into people's heads. When that point has been reached, their heads will explode into flames that make magnesium flares look like kitchen matches.

We need more dog food. I wonder if I should take the dogs with me tomorrow or the next day to pick it up. They love to ride in the truck and do tricks down at the feed store for the dog biscuits in the boxes there. But Poppy is such an airhead. She jumps on people because she's so jealous of Cinnamon. Maybe MOM can come along and hold Cinnamon's leash and I'll keep hold of Poppy.

Us'ns have been roundly pegged by the UK Humour Press:

"Jamie Connor, a graphic designer from Stoke Newington, died yesterday after a planned mountain bike trip to the recycling centre before heading for a Fairtrade organic Latte at the local co-operative coffee shop while listening to George Monbiot podcasts on his iPhone saw him suddenly explode with smugness.

Upon hearing that Connor's family were to plant trees to ensure his explosion was carbon neutral, Jeffrey Clarke, a neighbouring Daily Mail reading Top Gear fan who was out washing his third car while listening to Jeremy Vine on Radio 2, spontaneously combusted with pompous indignation."

In our neighborhood in forward-thinking, enlightened San Diego, they are gradually taking out all the overhead lines neighborhood by neighborhood and putting the lines into carefully built trenches, thus aboiding such liabilities as dump--truck dumkopfs.

I just ordered a new, custom-built job. It will have the disk partitioned so I can run Linux as well as Microslop. At least it will come with Windoze XP and not Vista ("Fish and Vista Stink After Three Days"). The monitor, keyboard, and trackball are good, and I've backed up 'most everything on a 1TB external hard drive. It's the "'most" that's bothersome, as well as the money I have to shell out.

2.8 GHz, dual core, 250GB HDD, 6 USB ports, all that good stuff.

The scumsucking, sluglicking, doofoid had better remember to lower things before h/she tries to drive under a REAL high tension line -- 880,000 volts, for instance, like the crane drive I had to investigate (after the incident) in Korea. Me: "Hi. What happened?" Stick of carbon: "   ." Me: "I see your tires are melted and the cable is welded to the drum. Would you like to comment on your destruction of government property?" Stick of carbon: "   ."

Was the damage done when the power came back on? Can you take the drives out and put them in a new computer in slave positions? Drive boxes are inexpensive these days. You'll have to "give yourself permission" to get to all of your data, though.

I guess it's time to do a backup. I take these kinds of events as a reminder to myself.

Hi, Mom. I'm back. Got back to find my pooter was FRIED!! FRIED!!! by some broke-dick you-know-what driving a dump truck with the bed up until he took out four powerlines and a couple of poles. I lost EVERYTHING!!, even the OS. The power was out for six hours, during which time we were driving back from Logan, UT.

'Twould be best for the chap if I never find out who s/he is. Fortunately, it did not affect Pat's computer, upon which I am posting this.

I shall refrain from discussing the ancestry, habits, intelligence and hygiene of this unwanted, scrofulous, pus-licking, piece of filth who is obviously descended from a line of lizard-screwing, anacephalic, banjo and nose pickers. To do so would be impolite and unforgiving, and I am well known having good bringing up (unlike the driver of the dump truck).

Dang, some people get all the breaks. I was doomed from birth --being in all respects a perfect baby--to a lifetime of gradually getting more and more imperfect, while those born ugly get to reap the advantage of looking more and more normal as they grow older. Why, it just ain't fair!!

No, it is just the replacement of a rotten tooth. The place was held for years by a simple crown but it gave way. Once you are through the hassle of getting the socket put in it is smooth sailing and you have a bullet-proof tooth permanently in place, immune to decay and looking beautiful. Mind you, looking beautiful means a lot less these days, and is much more flexibly defined than it was when I was a youth!! :D

Gorgeous drive up to through the mountains yesterday, MOM. Blue, blue sky and puffy white clouds, Goldenrod, bidens, New York Ironweed and Joe-Pye weed, along with the brilliant scarlet of the early-turning leaves of smooth and poison sumac, and the slightly duller clusters of staghorn sumac berries decorated the fields and roadside all along the way.    At the tops of the ridges, a few trees just beginning to show a hint of fading into yellow and orange.

Then went to the Farmer's Market with Mom. It was just as colorful with the tables piled high with late summer and early fall produce, pumpkins and winter squash in every color, and big pots of mums and asters. Ran across bell peppers the deep purple color of eggplant, which I had never seen.

Life is good.

So far it is only the retaining socket, implanted into the bone of the upper jaw.. Stitiches come out in two weeks. A few months later, the post and crown can be established.

I have recovered my sense of sobriety after napping most of the afternoon away. Those little blue pills are powerful stuff, man.
