What is LRRP?

I think he is onto something good here.

- to comfort the bereaved?
Yes. They come and do receive some comfort. I know, I've met them

- to justify the losses?
Not on your life!

- to inspire further such sacrifices in further wars?
God, no!

- to increase patriotic fervour and support of war?
Are you kidding? Here in Idaho, Reddest of the Red, the war is about as popular as gonorrhea or Larry Craig.

- to inspire anger and hatred toward "the enemy"?
Nope.

- to call out for vengeance?
Hell no!

- to honor the dead?
...And to remember them, as the young men and women they were. (Oh, there's also a memorial for the civilians who have been killed by both sides, but it's not on that YouTube segment.)

John Rogers, who thought it all up and has been the driving force behind it, has done it and placed it where it is (easily and immediately visible from a major Interstate) so that people will KNOW, be socked in the gut, by the number of the dead. Most folks can't visualize more than fifty or so people together, at the most. Now, John was LRRP in 'Nam and took a mortar fragment to the head which has harmed the vision in both eyes (right worse than the left). But when the White House won't let pictures of the flag-draped coffins be shown, when the wounded and the dead arrive at 2 a.m. so that home folks won't be disturbed, when the President and VP themselves don't seem to know diddly-squat about the damage war does to lives, why, I start to think that ol' John might be on to something here. I know he's not going to go to a peace demonstration, but he's making more of an impression than most of the demos do.

There are those who stop each year (this will be the fifth) and remark on how many more crosses there are than there were the previous year....

They are part of the sell on certain asserted premises: that the nation as such is inherently a Grat Good to be Protected At All COst, and that it was under Extreme Threat; and therefore, that those dying in battle Stood for Virtue Against the Ultimate Odds, and Paid the Ultimate Price to defend our Great Virtues.

Now, to a certain extent, there is a grain of truth in these assertions, but the sad fact is that the right-wing, the deeply sentimental, and those who want to camouflage their own failures to make similar high-risk contirbutions to the group good, have exagerrated these slogans and laid about with them until they are plumb worn out at the elbows. So they seem, perhaps, less inspiring than at one time they may have seemed.

But I will say this: standing up to a lethal threat in battle takes a huge amount of courage, and a great ability to confront. If you actually do it, especially becaise of a philosophical sense of Virtue, you are being heroic, sure enough. I have never been shot at and do not intend to begin now, myself; if it ever came down to it, I would want to be able to face it as intelligently and courageously as some of these veterans (especially the ones who survive).

Look at the political weight of the term--it's all in the context. If you have a man/woman who fought and killed people who wasn't in the military or in some extreme defensive position, would that term be used? Otherwise, they'd be a murderer. It is a socially sanctioned action with a specific name.

Another such term is "martyr." In other contexts this person would simply be a murder victim or be suicidal.

My two cents.

Regarding the "Field of Heroes"...

Is EVERY man who dies in a war automatically a hero? Or is he someone whose luck ran out? Or is he something other than both of those?

If every man in an American military graveyard is a hero, then are not all the dead Iraqis and Afghans and other people who died fighting those men also heroes? And if not, why not? Surely their own people miss them in the same way that we miss ours.

Does the naming of dead soldiers as "heroes" serve a purpose? If so, which purpose?

- to comfort the bereaved?
- to justify the losses?
- to inspire further such sacrifices in further wars?
- to increase patriotic fervour and support of war?
- to inspire anger and hatred toward "the enemy"?
- to call out for vengeance?
- to honor the dead?

Idaho State University (hereinafter called "ISU" or "the U") holds "New Knowledge Adventures" (hereinafter called "NKA") as part of the Continuing Education (hereinafter not referred to again) program. They NKAers are having a snowshoeing trek about 18 miles up-canyon from our house. This is an annual event, followed by chili eating. These folks are all over 60 and should know better, really.

I have my snowshoes here at the house, I could dig out an old pair of boots and head your way. If having snowshoes is all it takes to get invited. I'll pass on the chili, though. I had some beans earlier this week that, well, I'm still kind of uncomfortable even after their passing. . .

Are they being invied as guests for chili who will just happen to come by snow-shoe? Or is snow-shoing the qualifying attribute here of who has been invited? If so, why?

What's the occasion, and where will the snowshoe? The golf course? No point in pulling out the old saw about yellow snow; perhaps better to direct folks to the facilities and tell them not to make yellow snow. (Too much nitrogen in the lawn and your weeds will grow fast next spring.)

We're having 34 snowshoers over tomorrow for chili. They're bringing the chili; there are 2.5 bathrooms on the first floor and another down here. We also have shovels.

Well, as you may know "Mark Twain" was only a pen name. His real name was Samuel "Drink 'em up!" Clemens. He got his nickname from his carousing in The Eagle, a disreputable saloon and "house" on the Hannibal riverfront. Sam and his brothers and I used to go in there to play pool; we'd have a beer or two, play a little eight-ball, and then Sam liquor would hit Sam and he'd yell "Drink 'em up!" After a few more beers he'd go talk with the young ladies who roomed upstairs, and when they'd finished their discussions he'd come back down and pass out under the pool table. We'd drag ol' Sam out and up to his house and leave him on the front porch, or if he were working back to the boat he was piloting. In the latter case we only rarely dropped him in the river by accident. But I can tell you this: as much as he drank his book should have been called "Life IN The Mississippi" and not "On."

When he got stoned they used to call him High Mucky Muck.

He is a repeating figure in Rapaire's fantasies, along with Billy Bob Shazxpeer and Ernie "Da Bool!" Hemingway.

And you, and me.

Amos, "cold" is what happens when atomic activity slows down. Because this rarely happens in Socal, everyone there is always in feverish activity, running around voting for Arnold or Ronny, starting a new cult, trying to avoid a wildfire or a mudslide, jogging along as cougar bait -- all that fun stuff.

In colder climes this stuff doesn't happen because atomic activity slows down. People don't feel the need to hop a ride on a comet or vote for Tom Hayden and so they don't.

It's all in the atoms. You'd understand if you had the background in nucular physics that me and the President got.

My natal day celebrations were acceptable. I ate at a gourmet dinner at Perkins, cleaned up around the house a bit, and slept straight through until the alarm went off.

That's the benefits of a clear conscience.

We're going to combine the book truck drill team with the library's shooting team in a biatholon sort of thing. The details are still being worked out.

By the way, the Legion was recently re-armed with .30-40 Krags, surplus from the Spanish-American War. The Legion Armorer and Assistant Official Bartender (LAAOB) is working on a way to use the Legion's stock of surplus .45-70 ammunition (surplus from the Big Horn campaign of 1876) in them. Little progress has been made or is expected, especially since someone took all the firing pins out of the Krags.

now THAT is scary!

Overdue? You have a choice - we can brand you on the forehead so that everyone knows you owe a fine; or you can run the gauntlet of our pistol team.

Or you could join the legion - but that would be a bit drastic!

Well, yeah, Stilly, maybe.

I was leaving for lunch and paused to chat with Jolene, who does the maintenance and cleaning. She remarked that she was getting an urge to go off and shoot some tin cans with a .22 pistol. We joked about it a bit, and then I made a mistake. In jest I suggested a Library Pistol Team.

Well, it turns out that one of the co-Supervisors in Reference used to be a deputy sheriff and had to qualify with a handgun every year. My Associate Director not only has a .22 revolver and a 9mm automatic, but she lettered in pistol in college. The Readers' Advisor would love to learn to shoot things. The YA Librarian would be in, and so might the Children's Librarian. Gene, a 'Nam vet who works at the Circ Desk, might also be in the group. Who knows who else?

Some libraries have tennis teams. Some have bowling teams or softball teams. We might have a team of pistoleras.

Lordy. What hath my chance remark wrought?
