FOR SALE

1. A peculiar snow-white wrinkled forehead.
2. A high, pyramidical white hump.

Both cracked and somewhat shattered. Collected October 3, 2007 on the streets of Denver, Colorado. Formerly belonged to someone named "Amos" who hailed from San Diego, California. Must sell to pay littering fine.

With Twenty K, and 007,
You would think I'd taken plenty.

As a cold wind from a dark hill chills the evening town below,
Frightening small children with dark imaginings of harm
So Rapaires wicked mind envelops the brightest sons of Mom
With toxins dark, and poisonous, and warm.

Oh, any MOABite may bite his wrinkled thumb
And, small of mind, may small, unmindful say
Whatever to his bitter mind does come
But only One can claim the Twenty K!!;

Or perhaps a nice furrowed brow? A double chin?

Problem is, I have parts left over. Would anyone like a very nice glass eye, hardly used?

So, I'm here in Denver and I went out to get some fresh air, right? So I'm walking down 16th Street and this guy is sitting on the sidewalk, playing a guitar. His case is open and there's a couple bucks in it. Sign says, "Please Help. My name is Amos and I'm from San Diego."

Well, he finishes his bit and I say, "Amos? Like, THE Amos? Like the one fromthe Mudcat Cafe?"

And he says, "Yes. I came out here to find John Denver's Rocky Mountain High. So far I've found St. Dismas High, Northside High, Kennedy High, and Junior High. I feel that my life is a failure." And he started to sob.

Being a decent sort, I knew the only thing that would help someone from SoCal. I dashed into a nearby Starbucks and brought him out a triple mocha caramel latte venti with whipped cream and biscotti.

"Oh, god!" he said. "You have restored my faith in humanity. I can never repay you!"

He sipped the drink (I really can't call it coffee, since is was more like a hot liquid candy bar) and smiles tried to wreath his weathered face. Unfortunately, being from San Diego his face was out of the habit of smiling. It cracked, and pieces fell all over the sidewalk.

A passing cop arrested me for littering. The fine is going to be USD 500.00, minimum.

But I did save everything. I just want everyone to know that yes, I saved face for Amos.

I personally, would like a recount but that ain't gonna happen 'cause Amos has greased the right palms and is rumored to have compromising piccures of the folks that could keep everyone outta here during his mad-dash to 20K...

But what did all them shennanogins get him??? Nuthin'... Absolutely nuthin'... He ain't gonna be in the Ripley's book... He ain't gonna get on the front page of no newspapers... I mena, he's gonna get zip...

Now 2 million???

Different story...

So keep on pluggin' away, Amos... Like I said... Only 'bout a million to go... Less 20,000, of course... Maybe 'round 2037 we'll have somwethin' to talk about...

Ha! I scamper over your somber, peering lackwit schnozzles and take, not only Twenty K but Twenty K and Seven!

Thus shall prevail the Noble Sonnes of Heavene!

And to the dreary of the soul-Deade Lande,

Their noses thumb, while they reply, "Pounde Sande!"

Fie, thou scurrilous, jealous Knave!

A bitter, hungry heart, yet unfufilled

That empty, rails against the sweet lark's trill

And dull, disputes the morning's piercing light.

And rails and cries, because he lives in Night!

This is a soul no Saint shall ever save,

But ever shall remain benighted Knave.

I was all set to post 20K when this #@#!@~~!! thing did something and the post was lost!

It was witty, yet wise. There will never be another like it.

And so Amos carried the day with neither wit nor wisdom.

Ah, well.

I had one cat one who didn't mind the vacuum, you could run the wand over his coat and it was okay by him. He loved the hair dryer, with all of that warm air.

that's logical since cats are natural (though some think they are SUPERnatural) and Nature abhors a vacuam.

As you can see, he wrote his own book on that subject!! :D

In other news this may be very important:

"THE VACUUM STRIKES BACK. Modern physics has shown that the vacuum,
previously thought of as a state of total nothingness, is really a
seething background of virtual particles springing in and out of
existence until they can seize enough energy to materialize as
*real* particles. In high energy collisions at accelerator labs,
some of the original beam energy can be consumed by ripping
particle-antiparticle pairs out of the vacuum.

Sometimes this process is the very reason for doing the experiment, but sometimes
it is only a detriment. For example, in the Large Hadron Collider
(LHC), under construction at the CERN lab in Geneva, a major source
of beam losses (particles exiting from the usable beam) for
heavy-ion collisions is expected to be a class of event in which the
counter-moving ions pass each other and don*t interact except to
spawn a pair of particles---an electron and positron---one of which
(the positron) goes off to oblivion while the other (the electron)
latches onto one of the ions.

This ion, bearing an extra electric charge, will now behave slightly differently as it races through the chain of powerful magnets that normally steer the particles around
the accelerator. Going a certain distance, the modified ion will
leave its fellows and smash into the beam pipe carrying the beams,
thus heating up the pipe and surrounding magnet coils.
Fearing these future beam losses, accelerator physicists have sought
to observe this effect at an existing machine, the Relativistic
Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at the Brookhaven Lab on Long Island. And
they found what they were looking for, a tiny splash of energy
amounting to about .0002 watts, or about what a firefly puts out.

The RHIC beam for these tests consisted of copper ions each carrying 6.3 TeV of energy
(about 100 GeV per nucleon). According to CERN scientist John
Jowett (john.jowett@cern.ch, 41-22-7676-643) this troublesome class
of events, referred to as bound-free-pair production (or BFPP, the
bound referring to the electron and the free to the positron), will
be much more formidable at LHC than at RHIC. First of all, the pair
production scales as the atomic number of the nucleus (or the charge
of the nucleus, denoted by the letter Z) raised to the seventh
power.

The LHC heavy-ion collisions will use beams composed of lead
ions. The more highly charged nucleus and the larger energies (574
TeV per lead nucleus) mean the BFPP process should be some 100,000
times more prominent than in the test at RHIC. This would amount to
about 25 watts, the equivalent of a reading lamp. That doesn't
sound like much but, when deposited in the ultra-cold (1.9 K)
magnets of the LHC, it could bring them to the brink of "quenching"
out of their superconducting state, interrupting the
operation of the huge machine. "

"'Euxenia' is a compound word in ancient Greek. The root of the primary word is 'xenos' or guest; 'xenia' is the solemn and sacred code of hospitality one must afford them. Failure to adhere to this code was an affront to Zeus, the most powerful member of the pantheon. The word 'xenia' refers overtly to this generosity, voluntary or otherwise, but just under the surface is the thought that the guest has the potential to be a threat: our modern word 'xenophobia' includes some of this unease. The prefix 'eu-' means simply 'good', but here again the full significance is not derived by accepting the meaning at face value. In the linguistic world of the ancient Greeks, it was often applied apotropaically, in other words with full awareness that the subject in reality embodied the exact opposite of the stated meaning, in this case 'good'. Names were sometimes given in this way in the hope that the characteristics of the place or being would change to fit the name. They usually didn't."

The object of this gem of masterful aesthetic illumination is my dear cousin, who creates beautiful works of art like these:

         Rhegmalogia
Series Intro
Interrogation
Shelf Edge
Sympiesis
Dialogue
Euxenia
Catalog
Euneclasteia
Treasury of the Siphnians

If you go to his site and wend through Rhegamalogia to Euxenia, you will find the piece about which he writes above. I am awestruck at his naming of names, the wispy windy thoughts dancing behind them, and the forms with which he gives them body in bold material form.

Anniecat, name calling is a tradition around this thread--if you take a little time to read the exchanges between Rapaire and Amos and Little Hawk and his avatars you'll see that we have to do something to keep the number growing higher. We get occasional posters who are here solely because of the stature of our number, you might say. The Big Kahuna. Flamingo Ted was famous for this (where has he gotten to, anyway?) and a couple of others sometimes take a swing this way to say hello and see what the topic du jour is.

23 to go now? And Rapaire says he's not in the running? (I don't believe that for a New York minute!) And Amos has created a most interesting island venue. Perhaps the dogs will stay at home in the back yard after all.

Rapaire:

Please do not mess up my day dreams with your politically correct reservations. We are all adults here, and where there are dusky maidens, there are also dusky, topless boat-boys who dive to thirty fathoms on a single lungful of air and have sturdy, velvety biceps which glisten in the sun, and teeth like mother-of-pearl which makes for heart-piercing smiles; they have flashing deep, deep eyes and long curly eyelashes, and they laugh as readily as an ocean breeze.

I hope that answers your question.

And they wear short flaps, and sandals, and little else, and their muscles peek out everywhere.

I have only just had a chance to reply to Stilly River Sage's comment the other day as I did not know what a 'Piker' was. Well!!!
In fact, I missread the number of entries on the thread and thought that there were only about 8 more to go until the magic 20,000 and wouldn't it be fun to make it Bubblyrat's name on that one. It wasn't until I'd sent a couple more off that I realised my mistake and had to rush out without explanation. 'Piker' indeed!!
