I have oblivious-ness down to a science. In fact, I probably qualify for a MoO (Master of Oblivion) or even a POB (Perfectley Oblivious Bloke)

As I have said before - you don't have to hit me over the head with a two-by-four more then five or six times.

He wasn't being obvious, Carol, so much as oblivious...

I didn't know this thread had been acronymised (is there such a word?) as MOAB! Has anyone already said that Stephen Fry's autobiography is called Moab is my washpot? All makes sense now...

Cheers

Tribes of cannabals were getting sick and dieing and it was discovered that a certain enzyme in human meat was the culprit. When they stopped eating humans the people got healthy again.
I'll just go get myself another pork chop in a can now....

Dang. I don't have any secrets just now.

There is college money for older students - but most of the time, you have to already BE in school to get it. Which means I still have to have something up front. I have applied for a job at the college I want to attend - if I went to work there, I'd get to go Almost Free. (not quite, but Almost) They haven't called me about it, but I'm going to keep checking on their other job openings.

In the meantime, I think I'll keep pursuing the personal trainer thing I started awhile back.

Well, I'm sufficiently confused, so he can't have been all that obvious about whatever it is...

On the other hand, I'm sufficiently confused most of the time, so maybe whatever it is you people are talking about is obvious to everyone but me.

On the other other hand, I'm sitting in a hotel in Detroit (well, actually Dearborn), working on an ultra-secret project, but I'm not going to tell any of you guys about it. Well... not yet anyway. But when I do tell you about it, I can assure you it won't have anything to do with Elvis. Well, it probably won't have anything to do with Elvis. It definitely won't have anything to do with William Shatner ...maybe.

If you're close enough to Philly you rent the Liberty Bell -- the current administration will do 'most anything for money.

gee - I was actually considering renting the message board in Times Square - and a 60 second spot follow 'Graham Norton'

Do you think I should really get the GoodYear Blimp?

Well, if you're the shy, retiring, modest sort like I am, you wait for folks to find the evidence and, if they don't, you just sigh deeply and know in your heart that you have done both well and good.

On the other hand, someone like MMario would probably wait a day or so and then hire the Goodyear blimp.

when completing an ultra-secret project is it appropriate to shriek the news to the skies - or should one just wait for others to stumble over the evidence?

I notice that "Sacrifice To Moloch" has more posts than "What Do You Call Your Thingie?".

Maybe I'll start a new thread, "What do you call sacrificing your thingie to Moloch?".... Toss in a giant squid and a tavern and it might be MOAB in postings.

Rapaire, yore 701st post to MOAB has disturbed me so much that I have cancelled my trip to the Andes. What a concept....I can see the priveledged FatCats, their teeth filed razor sharp, harvesting and roasting trailer folk to combat the food shortage thus eliminating world poverty. There is still the problem of methane as farmers will no doubt fill the livestock's trough with cheap legumes to fatten them up for market. Po'Boy sammitch takes on a whole new meaning....
Fantastic BS. MOAB is back on track once more.

BLUES POETRY 101

Honey Bee
Recorded 1954 by Muddy Waters

Sail on, sail on my little honey bee, sail on
Sail on, sail on my little honey bee, sail on
You gonna keep on sailing till you lose your happy home

Sail on, sail on my little honey bee, sail on
Sail on, sail on my little honey bee, sail on
I don't mind you sailing, but please don't sail so long

All right little honey bee...

I hear a lotta buzzing, sound like my little honey bee
I hear a lotta buzzing, sound like my little honey bee
She been all around the world making honey
But now she is coming back home to me

DIRECTIONS FOR DELICIOUS HUSHPUPPIES

Mix hushpuppy mix with water to make medium thick batter (batter should be only thick enough so that it will hold together when dropped into hot grease; if batter is too thick, hushpuppies will tend to be too dry). Drop by the teaspoonful into hot grease (350°). Occasionally dip empty teaspoon into water before dipping hushpuppy batter so that batter will easily fall off of spoon. After frying, drain hushpuppies on absorbent paper.

Board appointment, hmmm? Well, unworthy as I am, I suppose that someone has to do it. And while I'm equally certain that Board members serve without pay...the WSSBA certainly must pick up the costs associated with school business...like travel to and from Board meetings...and meals....and lodging...and...well, if such an appointment were thrust upon me, so to speak, why, yes, I'd serve....

Exactly. It's the sheer simplicity of it that is so awesome, and which completely eludes the poor wretches among us who do not recognize Shatner for what he is...the very apotheosis and ne plus ultra of talent, wit, sex appeal, and dramatic panache.

The power of the Man can be appreciated by the fact that no one dares any longer to put his name in a thread title on Mudcat, for fear of throwing the entire forum into confusion. Thus he must enter quietly, through the side door as it were, in order to avoid causing a stampede.

That's power, baby!

My dog, a Rat Terrorist, is an unusual animal. When I take him out at night during a full moon, he actually looks at the moon and howls. He doesn't howl unless the moon is full.

But that is not the most unusual thing about him. He has a kind of extra-sensory perceptive power.

When I watch TV, he ignores the set until...now I know this is difficult to believe...something, an ad or program, with William Shatner in it is about to come on.

This power has a 100% no-fail statistic. Whenever my dog runs to the TV and stares at it, I tell my significant other that Shatner is about to appear. And he does!!

My dog, "Tiberius", (named after Starship Capt. James Tiberius Kirk, incidentally!) will then sit and stare at the TV until Shatner is no longer on screen!

I sought the counsel of a pet psychic concerning this, and she told me that the dog indeed has psychic abilities! When I asked her why does this ability seem to arise only when Shatner is on TV, she said, "Well, hell...Shatner is the only thing on TV worth watching!"

Some things are so simple, they are easy to overlook!

Nowadays, you don't necessarily have to write a thesis. The program I'm interested offers a non-thesis option where you maintain a portfolio of your work, and take a big ol' honkin' exam instead.

Now I just have to find some money...

Oh, yeah -- my wife got a doctorate in law (JD) because she didn't want to put up with the academic stuff of writing a dissertation, etc.

Like bee-dubya-ell, I haven't pursued a phud because, as he said, there would be a lot of suggestions for kissing, and I just might make even more explicit suggestions. I was afraid of it when I returned to college, but all except one of those I dealt with had dealt with vets returning from the Korean War and were cool about it. The exception was and still is a fool, and he wasn't a prof anyway. Sometimes it seems to me that the farther a discipline is removed from "the real world" the pettier and more involved in academic politics it gets. I've seen it; my wife worked in colleges and universities for YEARS.

If you want it, go get it.

Kim, I'd never, ever, try to stop anyone from getting more schoolin'. My BA in English Lit (and often I was lit, too) was a remarkable achievement, given that it was interupted by my rich Uncle Sammy, a lot of poor grades, and a kid who didn't have a clue about where he was going.

No, I wasn't drafted, I was National Guard and my unit was activated and sent to Vietnam; I ended up in Korea. When you're told that you're going away to war for up to two years BEFORE the end of the semester, 18th Century Literature suddenly isn't quite so important anymore.

Fortunately, when I got back I was physically older, and psychologically MUCH older, and I wanted to get undergrad work over and get on with my life. All I did then was take up with the woman I eventually married and, because I was dating a faculty member and some of my previous friends had returned to teach, I went to faculty parties and such.

I found my niche in libraries, following an aborted grad school stint, a futile attempt to get into another grad school, and finally graduating from what was then one of the best library sci. grad schools in the US. Then, with my wife in working on her doctorate (in law), I started another master's program, in English (writing focus). That school dropped the program before I finished, so I quit.

The last class I took ended on July 3. Prior to that I'd taken two classes last fall, when I was still back in KY.

If you want to go to grad school, do it. Now or later, but if you want to, do it. You're not to old until the sod hits your casket, and maybe not then.

By the way, you might check out a book called "Graining the Mare." It's a collection of Western poetry by women -- I've been "into" so-called "Cowboy" poetry since about 1992 and find it far more vital and involved than much of the current "academic" poetry.

You tell 'em, Kim! And I'm by God proud of my BA in English too! But I'd rather shoot by foot off than even think about pursuing an MA in English! What I would like to do is get a second BA in art and then an MFA. I'm already making a meager yet satisfying living as a visual artist. It would be nice to have some credentials to go along with all the money I'm not making. Only problem (other than lack of funds) is that age has curtailed my willingness to jump through hoops and do stupid meaningless shit just for the sake of a letter on a piece of paper. (At this point, I'm only willing to do stupid meaningless shit for money.) I'm afraid that the probability of student/professor conversations featuring prominent use of the term "Kiss my ass!" would be pretty high.

If I remember right, techies can flip burgers too, just as well as anyone else can.

I know you're being amusing... but the fact is, I'm proud of my degree. I had to work hard to get it. (If it hadn't been for the math, I would have had a much more respectable GPA. I did well in all my literature classes.) If you don't think reading and writing are worthwhile endeavors, then all I can do is offer my pity.

And I've never flipped burgers. Ice cream, actually, was my fast food of choice, and I was damn good at slinging it. But that's what I did while I was still in school.

Now I edit the company newsletter, and write songs, and stories. One of my good friends, who is a novelist, and a teacher (who has a Masters in English) has re-introduced me to the joys of poetry, which I had long forgotten.

So tell me again what's wrong with that?

I applaud Little Hawk for his voicing of a hidden truth. This same truth I have sat on for years, for fear of being ridiculed. Hurrah, now it has been spoken in an open forum! William Shatner is William Shakespear!

Yes! Yes! It is True!

Now that it has been told, can you not see it? Think of the various roles that the Great Shatner has played...from the Twilight Zone to the Price Line.com ads...can you not see the similarities in his unique speech and the writings of Shakespear.

Have you not noticed the drama in his voice even as he speaks of the most mundane thing? Shakespear was a fine dramatist, and comedian...so also is Shatner! Remember Shatner's stirring rendition of Elton John's "Rocket Man"? Such wonderful drama blending perfectly with fine-line comedy!

I believe there is some undefinable something that causes True Greats to live forever, and Shakespear, being a True Great, is living on this earth now, in the form of the one we know as William Shatner!

Truly, we are exceedingly blessed to be living in a world where William Shatner abides!

William Shakespeare
William Shatner

but he also spelled it

William Shakspear
William Shatner

and

William Shaxper
William Shatner

and x is the 23rd letter of the alphabet, and t is the 20th, 23-20=3;
p is the 16th letter and n is the 14th, 16-14=2.

As we all know, Bill's birthday is: March 22!!! 3/22!!

The Man has recently written "Of all the roles I've played in my career, some of my most favorite were written by that most famous of scribes, Shakespeare." Yes!! Check out his website yourself and see!

Thus it is proved:

William Shatner IS William Shakespeare. Numerologically, letterologically, the proof is irrefutable. The Great Mystery is solved: not Francis Bacon, not Christopher Marlow, not Ben Jonson, not Elizabeth I, not Charlie's Aunt, but William Shatner wrote the greatest plays in English.

And LH, in August he's going to be in Binghamton, NY -- close enough that YOU can visit him. How I envy you!

An Open Letter -- well, note, to Kim:

Technological stuff isn't hard. There's nearly no math at all involved now, unless you REALLY want to get involved (or are forced to) and feel a compulsion to translate decimal to binary or octel or hexadecimal, and Kim, they have wonderful treatment programs for those people nowadays. Of course, the electroconvulsive therapy DOES leave gaps in their...whatchamacallit...you know...their...ah, shoot.

And remember that Enlish majors can do anything: flip burgers, make french fries, dig sewer lines, anything.

Come on, Kim. It's not a problem or anything to be afraid of. Join us. Don't be afraid.

Tonight I have watch a marvelous thing on A&E TV. It is an old "Columbo" rerun, starring the wonderful William Shatner. His acting is his usual superb job. And one of the most brilliant things on the program, other than Columbo's keen intellect, is Shatner's moustache.

It has a life of its own. In one scene it is dark and thick; the next scene it is thin and light.
At times it is perfectly straight across his lip, while at other times, it is slightly curved.
In many scenes, it is low on his lip,but watch a bit longer...it gets higher...and later, even higher!

What a great actor to think of including his moustache in the performing of each scene!

No wonder Shatner is lauded so highly throughout the world (and beyond?), he is THE Actor of all time, truly a MAN among men!

In the distant future, one name will shine among the great actors of the world...WILLIAM SHATNER!!!

it kind of rhymes with kiss my nipple,

It's got the word party in it,

I think that perhaps I can give you a definite answer on that, if you will allow me time to think about it. But then again, I don't know -- it's not the sort of thing you want to rush right into, you know. On the other hand, we shouldn't shilly-shally in a matter of such importance. Nonetheless, it does require study and consideration. I'll check with my supervisors when they return; maybe they'll set up a committee to discuss it and prepare an action paper. In the meantime, for God's sakes don't DO anything!

There, that's decided.
