Well, actually it's just a fake movie-set sort of place with sort of the fronts of buildings and the targets are set out in the brush, along the sides of the shooting bay, and out on "Main Street." Facades, you might say. Kinda like most of SoCal...where folks who have a mind to can shoot "cowboy" targets safely.

"Come on, Blacky. Draw, ya rabid skunk! What, you'd just a piece of angled steel? Naw, you ain't that tough. Awright then, I'll draw first, even if it ain't in The Code Of The West fer the good guy ta shoot first."

Well, pardners, I'm a-headin' out tomorrer fer a showdown. Yep, I'll be walkin' along with mah equalizers on, 'ceptin' that one of 'em's busted and I gotta use a backup instead. Yep, gonna go out and bag me that yeller-bellied, white-livered, good-fer-nothin', dry gulchin', grayback covered, spitoon-divin' gang that's been pesterin' the girls up a Red Nelly's place and drinkin' up the Legion Hovel without payin'. Ah'll be packin' my six-shooters, don't you worry none about that, an' mah Winchester clone an' mah shotgun, too. Yessir, only I ain't gonna be wearin' no lavender shirt -- I got me a blue one! An' new brown pants ta wear with mah old braces an' mah vest. Gotta look good when ya gotta do what a man's gotta do.

Bran' new town ta do it in, too. Ain't got no bullet holes in it yet er nothin'.

There were two spiders who could see eye to eye to eye to eye to eye to eye to eye to eye on almost everything. Then, one day, one of them found that eyeglasses were needed and on the playground was teased as "Sixteen Eyes." The friend, in sympathy, started wearing false eyeglasses and then they could again see eye to eye to eye to eye to eye to eye to eye to eye eye to eye to eye to eye to eye to eye to eye to eye again. And they lived happily ever after.

NEver met a sheep yet that would hold with no tarantulas. They just don't see eye to eye, if you see what I mean.

We generally use 4-ought buckshot, but we're in high desert and it gets colder here in the winter than it does down Texas way. THERE they dasn't use anything less than 00 buck.

Some folks DID run into a tarantula up here in a cave over at Craters of the Moon a couple years back and they had to get a quad-50 from the National Guard to get rid of it. Would have roped it and necked it to a fence, but it didn't have no neck and besides, it scared the sheep (see posting below).

Tarantulas... yo, Rap... what size shot do you use fer such as that? I suppose #6 is okay but SSG would make sure, eh? Fer spiders here, I use a thumb or index finger dependin on size. The only truly poisonous local spiders are at City Hall.

Rap, I wasn't naming the animals in the STATE, heck Texas has lots of charismatic megafauna in the state. I was mentioning my back yard. Like your wolf. I have coyotes, possums, skunks, snakes, hawks, vultures, turkeys (!), and in the creek a variety of fish hardy enough to endure urban conditions, along with a whole mess of turlers. (What my youngest brother used to call Turtles. Haven't thought of that in years.) And tarantulas.

I think that certain men experiment with the sheep. There are a lot of Scots up that way, and a lot of Republicans. You can draw your own conclusions.

Up in the hill country around Truchas they use old sticks to make long fences, or palings, along their lot lines. Call 'em "coyote fences" All sun-grayed and weather-beaten, they look very quaint indeed..

Shucks, M'am, we got us more coyotes than folks in these parts. Not ta mention skunks, bald iggles, golden iggles, goshawks, foxes, antelope, whitetail deer, mule deer, jackrabbits, horses, Herefords, Angus, elk and sich like critters ta choke a mule. Now as fer as hosses go, we got 'em all: Arabians, quarter, roans, duns, grau, appaloosa, pintos, thoroughbreds, mustangs, jist about anything you could want. Even some Clydesdales and Percherons. Llamas, too. Lotsa sheep, even got us a Sheep Experimental Station up north a piece, but I don't want ta think what they do up there. Heck, a coupla years back I had danged WOLF in my backyard! Fish and Game said so.

I can offer wildlife along the lines of hawks, coyotes, foxes, and tarantulas (in my yard) if anyone visits down here. Not much charismatic megafauna around this part of North Texas, though.

You gonna be in that area around June 22, pardner? If so, me an' you got some "discussin'" to do. At high noon, on a dusty Main Street.

And I *always* "Mind Your Own Bottle." That's why yours get so low so fast -- I'm minding it for you.

You could retire to worse places than SF,NM. Of course, there's the scorpions, the sidewinders, the centipedes, the gila monsters, a lack of water, dust storms, the occasional blizzard, hostile natives, radiation left over from the '50s, NARPs, and similar things but don't let any of that discourage you. And by the way, Ojo Caliente is very nice.

Rapp, MYOB. I did get a note off to Art--it was too crowded timewise to make space to go back down to Albuquerque. I definitely owe him a letter and a visit next time. We were enthralled with S. Fr, and thought about retiring out there. Dunno, though--the weather's a bit better right here...

I'll even stand off a ways and watch.

MAn, what a trip. Unbe-effing-LEIVABLE. Friday flew to Albuquerque, rented car, drove an hour north to Santa Fe, got in around ten and spent the next 8 hours traipsing over the wild hill country north up to Truchas, Met wild-eyed artists and cool-eyed sculptors, a genuine brujita curandera lady who keeps a back room full of herbs, and nearly iterrupted a serious deal in the back roads of a heroin area which had us all feeling nervous for a bot. That night drove back to Albuqerque and picked up Darius and drove him back to his hotel playing catch up on old times. Next day ran around like mad things getting details ready for concert, big dinner party, drank red wine on top of antibiotics (tooth surgery last Wednesday) and get poleaxed as a re4sult. Survived. Sunday was the concert, a huge affair at the Santa Fe Lensik Theater, swarms of people--about 350 of them, I think, coming to hear Darius and his local pick up jazz group knock out some Brubeck classics and some of his own music from his career in Africa. All the glitzy artistry in the world in the reception afterwards where I met all kinds of fascinating people. The whole affair was in support of the humanitarian gruntwork being done to stop the ravages of HIV and cultural mutilation of women in East Africas, work done by the Humankind Foundation, god bless them one and all. Monday drive back to airport and catch flight back home. Magic on every hand in the Santa Fe wonderland, but I am bushed, I don't mind saying. It was old home week for me, and I loved every minute of it. Except the getting poleaxed part.

Oh, Portland Cement concrete highways are fookin dangerous in The Frozen White North! The joints get so large in the cold that they make a monotonous thump when driven upon and lull people to sleep. Besides that, any injuneer knows they just ain't gonna work where the sun don't shine so it's a $ thing fer yer crooked polynicians eh?

As fer parking garages, who don't get stemie over them? I got a cool story about a parking garage design problem while I was at the Hallowed Halls of UNB (U Need Brians) but it involves only ONE student out of over 80 getting a perfect assessment on the weekly assignment and I don't like to boast. It was ME! I solved it in less than twenty minutes by myself while groups of many worked on it for hours and came up short... apparently, I was the only one that knew it got too fuckin cold in the winter to meet the space requirements so I said, "Assume enclosed, heated space." 10/10. Yeah... I know... my bad.

(There is a reason that story is special to me but I'll save for my memoiries.)

I didn't know you were allowed to put pictures like that on Mudcat! Oh, for shame!!! Do you still take them out and indulge in lascivious thoughts and actions as you look at them? Do you fondle pieces of concrete for pleasure? Are you "excited" by superhighways and multistory parking garages? Do you "get off" looking at pictures of the bunker's along Hitler's "Atlantic Wall"?

Have you considered professional help? Perhaps from an electrical engineer?

Here is a photo time lapse frame by frame of concrete curing that I did as part of a term paper in Crete 2501.

Initial set :

18 hours; sawcut (note slight ravelling)

__________

7 days:

__________

21 days:

__________

28 days; compression break 96.5%; 30MPa spec

__________

Pretty heady days I had in the halls of higher learing. Of course, that part of the paper ain't really exciting unless until you see tha pic of the the three specimens after 28 day compression failure. Hold onto your hats!....

Ya can't watch Portland Cement concrete dry. It's gotta be covered and wetted or it's gotta be sealed. BUT... after that, ya get to watch it cure for six months! Of course, the first 28 days are the most exciting but that last 5% of strengthening is pretty good too.

Rap... will there be video posted on YouBoob?

No, we went to drop off Hazardous Waste and the Farmers' Market. Saw Eiseley there, bought some lettuce and spinach and one jar each of raspberry and huckleberry jam.

Starting about May 14 we'll be on a ROAD TRIP!!!! First to Chicago for a wild night near Midway airport, then a rollicking trip to Springfield, IL and a night of unrestrained carousel there. The next day, the 16th, I drive the Quincy, IL, my hometown and one ROCKIN' place for a reunion of my old National Guard unit -- we were activated 45 years ago this coming May 13! Then back to Springfield, and after that we're off to St. Joe and Indepence MO as well as Pat revisiting Leavenworth, KS where she did time while her father was in CGSC there! Then another wild and crazy night near Midway and we'll be home on the 29th.

While we're gone, our sidewalk along the street will be dug up and re-poured! We'll have a new sidewalk when we get back!

Doesn't that sound like a wonderful schedule to you? Oh -- I see that I forgot the mention that from the 16th through 18th Pat will be working on a program for Midwest Fabric Study Group in Springfield, my youngest niece will be graduating from Missouri State on the 17th, my nephew Dan will be both a new father and on the 17th receive an Associate's degree in Landscaping and Turf Management (graduating Magma Come Loudly, no less). Oh yes, Dan's daughter is due the week he has finals.
