Well, at least you well be able to get a tan. I recommend it. If the seas rise far enough to reach Bumfuque-le-Noir, or whatever that town is you live in, I will lend you my kayak. I will probably need a full-size schooner in such circumstances, anyway.

Soon you shall have it, but you must give 110% to global warming. So get out there and increase the size of your carbon footprint! Spray them CFCs and cut down more trees! Remember: the sooner YOU do YOUR part the sooner Ontario becomes the new Florida.

I would gladly take Canada without the snow. In fact, I dream of it.

Than you, Goode Manne of Bookes. Your dext'rous mem'ry has done me a good turn today.

MM, I keep the snow where I can visit it at will, in season--in the nearby high pine-littered Cuyamaca Mountains. When I want its reminding power, it is less than an hour's drive from my sunny coastline. When I do not I am glad it is at a safe distance.

A library without a roof
Is good -- it brings perspective
Enjoins the seekers after truth
From haughty, cold directives
And stays them from pretence, aloof
And condescending.

To walk among the whispers there
Of ages wise and good, while overhead
The local star goes by, and summer air
Reminds the scholars, looking up in dread
From curls of complex, mental snares
Into whose coils they have been led,
That life does not happily bless
The unbending.

And if, immersed in tides of facts
And paradox and half-moved arrows,
The scholar, rumbling in his tracks
Should be distracted by some sparrow
Or a humming bird's sudden attack
And finds the world had grown less narrow
And fields, more than fences, could use
Some mending.

This would not be a bad thing, in truth
I think I'd like to study there--
A hall of books without a roof,
Where dew can fall on students hair
Where stars can visit in the listening booths,
And winds can turn the leaves in pairs
And send the index cards awry, in a dance
Unending.

                        ? Amos J.

Rapaire:

First, your ignorance of the genuine cultural powers afoot in California is abysmal.

Second, although I live on water, I am not a fish, and see no reason to immerse myself in it anymore than I choose to sleep in vegetables. Your analogy, thus, stands exposed in its shabby inadequacy. Suggesting I should live in snow because some of my water comes from it is logically as indefensible as suggesting your library should have no roof, since all the books in it were written as well by those who depend on water. It would be an entertaining idea, to be sure; but it would endanger your career, even though otherwise I would suggest you present it to the Directors.

Amos blithered about:
" he would be praying with gratitude about the privilege of missing snow"

Sir, I must respectfully disagree. I contend, that while I have little tolerance for snow, I would not care to live in a region where it does not occur. Snow, rather then being something to miss, is rather something that gives you appreciation for warmer weather and climes.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, Amos. But without the snow in the mountains YOU wouldn't have any drinking water. California would simply blow away into the Pacific Ocean. And you know...we've gotten all the gold out of it, so what's it good for? A few redwoods maybe and that's about it; we can and do grow them elsewhere. A Hangtown Fry? -- we can do that in Vermont. Surfer "culture"? Kayaking? -- invented in the Aleutian Islands. Hollywood? -- please!

So what not make Nevada and Arizona beachfront property?

"I miss the snow. Yes, I know the United States gets snow, but to my Canadian eye, American snow is like American health care: sporadic, unreliable and distributed unevenly among the population. In my hometown, Exeter, in the heart of Ontario's snow belt, punishing squalls were a fact of life from November through mid-April. One time, 39 inches fell on the town in three days ? and school wasn't even canceled. And it wasn't just the quantity of snow ? it's the speed with which it arrived.

When I was a child, it wasn't unusual for my 15-minute walk home from school to begin under clear skies and end in a blizzard. I remember once, when I was 8 years old, stumbling into my house, my hair covered in powder and my eyelashes frozen together, and screaming, "Why do we live here?!" My mother took my face in her warm hands and said, "Because it's where people love you."

At the time, that struck me as the lamest statement ever uttered by a human being. But today, as I sit under the California sun, it only strikes me as halfway lame, and maybe even less than that."

? TIM LONG, a writer for "The Simpsons"

Mister Long, like many Canadians, has yet to emerge from his adolescent cocoon of fantastic mock-ups into the simple air of reality. Had he made that transition, especially at a normal age such as his mid-20's, he would be praying with gratitude about the privilege of missing snow.

A child decides to read.

He is not tantalized by lands beyond the horizon, or by visions of the heart made manifest in heroic characters and damsels in gossamer.

It is not the yearning to make something greater of his own mind that drives him, nor the determination to be among those men and women who have spent their lives in Penetrating Mystery and aiding knowledge.

Rather, this child is driven to flee into the arms of the wondrous array of Bookdom by terrifying iconic images of overwhelming, threatening, exploding, trauma-inducing savages and barbarians aiming weapons at him--long barreled explosive Colts with sulphurous clouds of smoke pouring out of them, and crude, vicious arrows laced together with blood-stained gut, tipped with murderous flint, aimed at his precious eyes by blood-curdling Injuns whose faces are frozen in grimaces of hatred.

Oh, and cowpies.

Fair morrow, good mother!

I shall somehow post a picture of what our new bookmobile will look like as soon as I can. I know that you'll like it: it has cowboys and indians and bad guys all shooting it out on Main Street at High Noon and a sign that reads "Read Or We'll Send Them After YOU!" What I especially like is the very realistic "road apples" and "cow pancakes" in the street (we're experimenting with a "scratch 'n' sniff" deal with those).

Stilly asked:how was your cruise? Did you see Fred Astaire or Rita Hayworth or Ginger Rogers (or their avatars) on your ship? Any "Walking the Dog" opportunities for romantic interludes? Or did you manage to find lots of excuses to visit the 24-hour buffet and help turn yourself into your own emergency floatation device?

I did see Fred, Rita and Ginger (or their photos) as part of the Broadway Revue one night. I was surrounded by lovely ladies on an almost constant basis...(the things I suffer (heh-heh-heh))

I didn't need to make excuses re: the buffet (I skipped the midnight chocolate buffet) even though the waiters were convinced I was going to waste away from not eating enough. Seriously - they tried to take one dish back because they said the portion wasn't large enough - and EVERY meal they were asking was I SURE I didn't want something more?   They asked the others occasionally - but me they asked EVERY meal.

I'll betcha Amos could do better than Lassie at telling people about a lamb in an old well. Unless Amos fell in, and then the lamb would have to do it and lambs don't have the same vocabulary that Amos almost does.

My dachshund would trot over to the well to see what all the commotion was about, peer down curiously at the lamb, bark a couple of times, then turn, lift his leg and pee on the side of the well to establish ownership, then go off happily to find some manure or a dead animal to roll in...

The steps I think that puppy followed are those of Rusty, the golden lab who lives up the block and who is walked by his owner David every morning. The pup wasn't on the porch first thing this morning and I haven't seen him since. He looked well-fed, but he did chew up several plastic pots and kind of trash the place before he left. If he turns up again I'll take him over to the Humane Society and his owner can claim him there or someone can adopt him. He's cute and smart. But I don't need three dogs. Cinnamon was in raptures when he turned up, though. So incredibly happy to see another dog to play with. It was tempting. . .

" I've become more and more persuaded that the lessons I was taught in "Econ 101" are insufficient to analyze public policy. Study after study has shown that we are not the hyper-rational calculating machines that economic theory assumes?and that we ignore at our own peril the crucial role of expectations, beliefs, and social norms in influencing behavior.

This is just as true in medical science and health policy as in other fields. The placebo effect is a compelling example here: Medicine tends to dismiss it as a statistical annoyance rather than examine it in and of itself, even though placebos are often more potent empirically than actual medical intervention. (One of the more fascinating studies I've come across in this vein was done by two Harvard psychologists who studied hotel cleaning staff and the effect of "perceived" exercise. At the outset, they found that most hotel workers didn't believe their work was exercise?two-thirds reported that they didn't exercise regularly, and more than one-third reported not exercising at all. But when the researchers informed a group of these workers that their eight-hour-a-day activity of cleaning rooms counted as "exercise," the effects were similar to an increase in actual exercise. The workers lost weight and lowered their blood pressure, apparently just by thinking that the same activity they were already doing was exercise! That's just one example that shows the power of human psychology.) "

This raises all kinds of interesting possibilities. For example, maybe they would have gotten the benefits of their exercise without further intervention if their spouses were not telling them they were fat and lazy and were not exercising, just working.

You have to wionder exactly how far in monitoring physical, emotional and mental systems this principle can be extended, and what the various issues would be in administering it as a low-cost path to mental and physical health for millions of people!

You should consider founding and running a pit bull sanctuary, Stilly. Those dogs have had a tough time in the past decade what with bad press and general public hysteria.

It would be far less trouble than a chimpanzee sanctuary... ;-)

There is the cutest little stray pup out on my porch this evening. The dogs are all excited. I gave him a bath so if he has/had fleas maybe he won't leave them behind before he leaves on his own or the guys from the city come get him. Looks like a 3 month old pit bull pup. Giving me the same "won't you keep me?" winsome expression that Cinnamon did five years ago. Poppy is jealous as hell. Cinnamon herds him away from Poppy. If I hold Cinnamon, Poppy makes it clear she's jealous and barks at it. So I kicked him out of the back and have my fingers crossed that he doesn't destroy the garden before morning.

But may I suggest that if you want to scramble for altitude by dropping names, like some over-rouged insecure socierty matron wannabe, that you at LEAST use the names of people who ARE your friends instead of just imaginary ones? It will make your claims to elite-hood much more convincing.

Rapaire, old friend, you can put your fancy rifle barrel up next to your raisin. It might at least do some good there by stiffening something.
