Then there was Bill "Billygar" or "Gar" Cramer, who got himself pretty well messed up in WWI. Gassed, shell shock, wounded, all that. When Gar came back the US was dry and his thirst wasn't. So he made hisself a houseboat and a still. Tied the boat up to Bay Island, like the others did, and caught and sold fish, trapped some muskrat, poach...er, shot...some deer or squirrels or rabbits. Anyway, one day ol' Gar was burned by a fur buyer. Gar had fifty 'rat pelts and the buyer owed him ten bucks but stiffed him. That feller is probably still around somewhere, if the turtles left anything.

Weren't nothin' compared to what happened down in the bottoms along the Mississippi some time back. Ya see, the effing bee eye had been eying a patch of some rope makin' material and finally decided to burn it all up. Right there on the spot.

So they cut it down, let it dry good, and put it into a big pile. Then with the help of a little scoutwater they lit 'er up.

Cops busted a half dozen fellers who were standin' downwind, tokin' on the smoke.

Yeah, LH. Wild bunch up there in tha back country. Camp #1 in the cluster was owned by some lads from eastern Kent County. They found a "patch" on the other side of the river. Drove all over it with their four wheelers on accounta them fellers didn't care fer that kinda farmin eh? There is an old ford near Camp #2 and that is where they crossed on there 4X4s. Well, when ya mow down a patch, ya get that there "smell" on yer tires and this here fellah what owned the patch and fed his family from the proceeds just followed the trail tracks like a hound dog and confronted them and demanded compensation which they just laughed at. Now, that's not a good idea iffin ya know anything about good ol Kent County Boys.

Next time they went across the ford, funny thing happened. They all got flat tires. Seems someone threw a bunch a smashed up beer bottles in tha river. They had a helluva time getting back ta camp. By the time they got back, the camp had a new name... Camp Charcoal.

Now... all that is just a story... just a rumour... fantasy. I made it all up just for a lark. For entertainment.

Just don't try to cross the ford in front of Camp #2 or in the shallows that are kitty-corner from Camp #6 unless you know where to go.

What amazing adventures you've had, gnu! I'm impressed that you are still alive, what with hanging around Dale, all those bush pilot trips, and so on. Dale sounds like one wild character, definitely worse than Shane, although they do share many of the same basic instincts, no doubt. But Shane is a town kid, has never gutted a moose, knows little or nothing about surviving in the bush, and just isn't anywhere near as dangerous as Dale. He'd like to be as dangerous as Dale, sure...but it ain't gonna happen. Strictly imagination on Shane's part.

Otters ain't the problem. It's bush pilots that figure, "I can make it." for whatever reason. Near bit it in Makkovik too. That was really scary. Overloaded. Even after dumping cargo back at the dock after nearly pitching in trying to take off, we flew at full flaps for an hour but couldn't get out of the canyon to go straight to Goose Bay... that costs FUEL! Plus, I had to clean up the vomit from two small children because, well, I am a gentleman and I wouldn't let the mother take off her seat belt to get to them as it was a bumpy ride and she was pregnant... very pregnant. Hand gestures only. They weren't too happy that a stranger was tending to them but the mother said something in Innu and they became as calm as kittens in an instant.

Good judgement to steer clear of unneeded troubles, good Gnu. Unlike some simians I could name.

Blessing on all in Mom's great hall
And those who dwell there with her.
The only thing that would add to joy
Is a billionairess sister.
A yacht of sleek, dynamic line
And a fine plce for to dock her!
And never a sight of bums like Shane
Or that Chongo mudderfocker.

Well, well, well... I got a Facebook message request from Dale! Apparently, he is alive and not in jail. Unless they allow posts from mobile in lockup. It just said, "Hey buddy, it's me Dale." I didn't accept the message. Dale ain't my cup a tea, so to speak. LH knows of what I speak. Dale is Shane on steroids+. Ya got rednecks and ya got good ol boys. Then, there's Kent County good ol boy rednecks. Best ta keep clear a that there eh?

Dale... so tough ya could drive him inta rough ground. Brought up in the fly infested bog country of Kent County, new Brunswick. Last time I saw him, he was at my camp and wanted help with a moose. His arms were covered in blood beyond the elbows. I, for reasons I will not get into, declined by saying I had one hour to get home to tend to Mum as per my schedule and I left my camp (camp #3 in 6 camp cluster; Dale's camp was #6). I sold it a while later for reasons which included being a "neighbour" of Dale. Subsequently, NB DNR bulldozed Dale's camp for Game Law and Outfitter infractions. I told many stories about Dale and Del and Daisy in Mudcat. Only difference between Shane and Dale... Dale is real... and fuckin dangerous... scary! A lot more dangerous than Shane. I SEEN it.

I nearly lost my life five times in one three week stint in construction supervision on the coast of Labrador. Two of those because the idiot game warden that took us up Fraser Canyon on a fishing trip had neglected to keep his gas cans clean of settled 2-stroke oil. I was pissed. One was when a float plane pilot for Crash Airways (Labrador Airways) decided he needed to "chance it" before dark. I was pissed... I fell asleep as we taxied out into Nain Bay only to be wakened by a sudden sensation when the right pontoon went about 8' into salt water when he was turning back into the wind and I looked out to see to see the right wing-tip of the Otter in the water. FUCK!!!!! But... we caught some great Artic Char and Trout so it was fun.

Oh... then, on another one, I had to swim to a Beaver floatplane on a lake in La Belle Province because the fuckers in Wabush, Labrador flew us into a cabin that had been evacuated by a PQ government order due to a forest fire. They knew it would be empty and wanted to make $ on a cash deal. And it came so close, I had to swim! I was MORE than pissed. But, I got a story to tell out of it... and a fine story it is.

I have told the story of the whale in Nain in Mudcat before. Maybe not life threatening but, when you have doubts and piss your pants, kinda the same deal eh?

And I got more. But I have seldom put my own life in danger without good cause. Skydive? Yeah. Ride a surf board? Fuck that.

Far as I am concerned, Rap is the one here that has truly "put himself in peril". For that, I salute him.

Ah, so. Nothing like a few good drownings to teach one to avoid deep water. But preference is masterful in its delicate intent. I approve.

Rapp, fear in a dangerous moment is a rich emotional delight; but fear in the absence of danger is misplaced and adds to confusion and inability.

Fear is probably THE great impediment in life at every level of it, Amos. However, there is also preference. I don't "fear" the game of football, for example. I just don't prefer it to, for example, basketball or table tennis or soccer. My preference is for those, not for football. This might be because my physical type (small and lightly built) was never very well suited to playing football...or it might be something else, but I think it's perfectly reasonable that a person have preferences and have the right to be interested in one thing more than in another. Same goes for Paris Hilton. :) It's not that I fear her....I'm just not interested! I don't think we'd find much to talk about. And so on...

Now, as regards deep and cold water...again, Nature did not equip me with a physical body type that is well suited to those. I get cold too easily, and I don't have much buoyancy. I am going to die of exposure a lot faster in cold water than a person who has more meat on their bones. Accordingly, I seek out warmer environments. This is just sheer practicality and common sense on my part. An animal does the same thing...it seeks out an environment that suits its physical needs and limitations.

I have a buddy who loves the cold. He's like a polar bear. He suffers terribly in hot summer conditions, which I find ideal. Accordingly, he loves winter sports, and I avoid them. I love hot places, and he avoids them. It's not fear, it's mostly knowing what conditions suit you best, that's all.

(Though I will admit that I fear deep water, yes, and I know why. It has to do with some past traumatic incidents.)

Nonsense, Amos! Fear can bring out the most creative faculties one might possess.

When I have fears that I may cease to be
Before my pen has glean'd my teeming brain,
Before high ? piled books, in charact'ry,
Hold like rich garners the full-ripen'd grain;
When I behold, upon the night's starr'd face,
Huge cloudy symbols of a high romance,
And feel that I may never live to trace
Their shadows, with the magic hand of chance;
And when I feel, fair creature of an hour!
That I shall never look upon thee more,
Never have relish in the faery power
Of unreflecting love;'then on the shore
Of the wide world I stand alone, and think,
Till Love and Fame to nothingness do sink.

Thank you for that explanation, Amos. I am relieved.

Regarding the thrill of being "picked up by a large wave and mastering its unstoppable power"..........umm, no. You will never find me seeking out such an experience, and here's why.

I just don't like water sports, for the most part. I never did. I'm a really poor swimmer. I possess very little buoyancy. I get cold very easily when immersed in water, unless it's body temperature water. I've had some bad experiences with deep water, with cold water, both in this life and in other lives, some of them terminal, and I try to stay off deep water. I want absolutely no part of large waves, because I fully appreciate their unstoppable power, and I intend to stay well out of its way. I am as happy to forego the thrill of surfing as I would be to forego the thrill of sky diving, another thing I never intend to do.

I seek other types of thrills entirely, and they are not the thrills of physical derring-do, but rather the thrills of discovery, spiritual realization, love, deep emotion, harmonious connection, creativity, and so on. They are inner thrills of consciousness for the most part, not outer ones of testing myself against physical phenomena.

Surfing is mildly interesting if you watch someone else do it, I suppose, but there is absolutely nothing about it that calls to me personally. You might as well ask me to take up football (another thing I have no interest in), become a golf pro, date Paris Hilton, take up bronco-busting or join the Ku Klux Klan. None of these things are going to happen! (smile)

...No! I am not Prince Hamlet, nor was meant to be;
Am an attendant lord, one that will do
To swell a progress, start a scene or two,
Advise the prince; no doubt, an easy tool,
Deferential, glad to be of use,
Politic, cautious, and meticulous;
Full of high sentence, but a bit obtuse;
At times, indeed, almost ridiculous?
Almost, at times, the Fool.

I grow old ? I grow old ?
I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled.

Shall I part my hair behind? Do I dare to eat a peach?
I shall wear white flannel trousers, and walk upon the beach.
I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each.

I do not think that they will sing to me.

I have seen them riding seaward on the waves
Combing the white hair of the waves blown back
When the wind blows the water white and black.

We have lingered in the chambers of the sea
By sea-girls wreathed with seaweed red and brown
Till human voices wake us, and we drown.

Amos, I have board shorts in blue and orange as well as rashguard shirts and surf shoes. As for agility, yes, I've slowed down some but I can still do whatever I decide to do, be it loafing or para-skiing.

I reached the point some years ago where I decided that I'd rather get smashed on good whiskey on the rocks instead of me on the rocks, where I'd rather shoot at a target than be one. I've learned that only part of me (the part that annoys others) is immortal and sometimes you can do things or have things done to the other part that hurt quite unnecessarily. If I start to forget this I visit the Legion Hovel and watch the fights.

Oh, yeah -- I rarely carry any weapons beyond those Mom Nature provided these days.

When I was very young (seven, I think) I broke my leg (falling off of the backyard swing set, and a friend falling on top of me). I lived in a mountainous region where, in season, many people took narrow slats of wood into the mountains and slid down the snow, only to ride back up hill and do it again. And over the next few years many of my classmates returned to school after a vacation with crutches and a newly-plastered leg.

I concluded that I'd been there and done that. So I never took up skiing.

The diversion of my diatribe against the evil grip of Pinot Noir was a red-wine herring, good sir. My point is that dismissing something as enlivening as surfing, as thrilling and awakening, is specious if you have not actually tasted the magic of being picked up by a large wave and mastered it's unstoppable power.

The reason Rapparree "sees no reason" to surf is because, for all his grand adventures, he is not a young man anymore. His wildest adventures are behind him, and the thrill of adrenalin is a poor copy in memory only. Where once he wrestled the world, now he lumbers along in it, talking of guns.

It pains me to be bearing bad news, but it must be faced squarely. If he had the agility and sense of balance he had when he was 20, and if he lived anywhere near an ocean, he would be out there, wearing funny looking board shorts, in a heartbeat.

Well put, Rap. I think it is perfectly reasonable to observe an activity such as surfing, study it carefully so as to determine its basic usefulness and appeal, and then say, "No thanks." I have done that with a great many things in my life, and I would wager that others can say the same. I don't regret it one bit.

Amos? Are you trying to prove my point or your own? In attempting to follow that last epic tirade of yours, I must confess that I had great difficulty determining which side of the argument you are even on. I know you probably possess the ability to easily talk the paint off a wall, a post out of the ground, and a river into reversing its normal course and flowing uphill, but what we need to do is to establish in what direction you are turning these immense powers, and with what final purpose in mind? At this point it's a complete mystery.

Could you try and clear that up? I await your next heroic Phillipic with bated breath.

I've been in combat and my life could have been ended in a messy and abrupt manner. I've jumped out of a perfectly good airplane 500 or so feet above the Kansas earth and landed safely, drifting earthward under a parachute. I've rappelled down a 150 foot cliff using clothesline and no harness. I've explored caves where outside of the feeble light of a carbide lamp or a flashlight was stifling darkness. I've swam in the Mississippi River on many occasions and did not dissolve. I have used C-3, C-4, dynamite, TNT, black powder, ammonium nitrate "cratering charges", and other explosives and remained in one piece. I have ridden out thunder and lightning storms on rivers and lakes in open boats and canoes, pointing the bow into to waves and riding them either to shore or until the storm blew out. I have worked in sandblasting, where the force of the air-driven carborundum could sever a finger or hand or arm. I have slept "rough" in rain, mud, snow, hail, and every possible combination of them and once rode a bicycle through a tornado-driven storm. I have been water skiing and snow skiing. I've ridden on fast snow machines and motorcycles. In brief, I think I've looked Death in face on many occasions and spit in his eye.

I see no reason to try surfing.

Spurious, facetious, and illogical. You, of all our denizens, must know the power of experience beyond the mortal shell; yet you deny it, resorting to mechanism and the ancient hypnotic power of solidity as a substitute for Reality. Go to, you vapid varlet, you vendor of vague velleities, you monger of mundanity!

Tonight the golden hound, color of the sun, lies asleep in her soft round bed, and as I ponder the unending horizons and landscapes of the imagination, I am once again swept up by the power of the King Rojo de Vinas, the secret Monarch of all the enfeebled mind surveys. His grip is sure, but my will is strong; he shall not rule me, nor eradicate the nobility and honor which are my birthright. And I meet him, in the dark and dripping alleyways of my darkest mind, him shall I slay. Be warned, sons of the Vine. Your ruler has numbered his own days, for treading on the heels of one far greater than he in his most inspired imaginings!

Bring on your dregs and your corky bits, you aigre aromas and your sharpest after-tastes! I am your man, your match, your master and your ultimate monarch when all the colors and vapors are laid down in surrender to a dark night's still voice. Then, then, shall you hear my song, and tremble.

Don't try to intimidate me with your medieval insults, sir! If you have never known the thrill of sharing friendship, drinks, and good times with a Chimpanzee gumshoe, then YOU are in no position to comment on how THAT feels, if I may extend your own line of reasoning. (It's a faulty line of reasoning, but that's where it would lead if it held any water, which it does not.) If we and others were only justified in commenting on things which we HAVE experienced, my good man, then we would all be instantly disqualified from talking about a very great deal....and at least 90% of everything you or I have ever posted would immediately lose all relevance, given that our own life experiences have necessarily been quite limited. We would be reduced to a woefully short and boring list of subjects upon which to expound, and all further speculation and imagination would grind to a halt. Evolution itself would be threatened!

Sitting here watching surfers I have achieved a deeper understanding of the sport.

Surfing consists of paddling a board out to where you think the waves starts, being drenched by numerous waves until the one you want comes along, putting yourself in the position where the wave's energy will carry you and your board towards shore, being tossed by the wave (with your board) into the air and landing in the most painful way, and doing it all over again...when the air temperature is 65F.

Surfing thus combines all of the worst elements of water polo, being beaten with a 2 x 4 while trapped in a running cement mixer full of rocks, falling through the ice, and failure to learn from your experiences.

I shall pass on experiencing this sport.
