LH, it was a skookum word in the lingua franca of Indian-White trade.

However...remember that Indians had been visiting and living in Europe from about 1493 on and by the time Jamestown was settled in 1607 there were Indians living in Virginia that had spent literally YEARS in England and elsewhere in Europe.

Moreover, there were Europeans -- often young boys -- who spent time with the Indians.

Read "The Jamestown Project" for more information on this.

(Know why the Lone Ranger was shot by his Faithful Indian companion? Because the FIC found out what "Tonto" meant. [Please note that it requires somewhat of a Spanish vocabulary to get this.])

Me think UIP heap good! All Injuns in-um Hollywood speak-um UIP in 1930s, 40s, 50s. Everybody know that. It be Universal Code for-um different tribes so nobody get-um confused and not know what other guy mean when talk. It take-um heap dumb person to question elegant UIP language system that gettum universal acceptance with Metro-Goldwyn Mayer AND Cecil B. De Mille AND all other big studios.

Such political radical people be-um main reason for failure and decline of-um western movies at box office. Heap BAD medicine!

What be-um derivation of word "heap" anyway? Anybody know? Where "heap" come from?

Where did the "hamstrung linguistic nonsense" come from?

You mean to tell me that the Shawnee, Blackfoot, Seminole, Arapahoe, Apache, Creek, Crow, Dakota, Cherokee,Cheyenne, Chickasaw, Chinook. Chippewa (Ojibwa), Choctaw, Coeur d'Alene, Kickapoo, Kiowa, Monhegan, Klallam, Klamath, and Iroquois didn't all speak Universal Indian Pidgin (UIP)??

I am absolutely stunned at this revelation.

Did you hear the narration provided by N. Scott Momaday on one of the PBS history series of the last decade? I think it was The West or maybe The Remembered Earth (these two come up in a quick search). Puts to rest all of that hamstrung linguistic nonsense.

Ambiguity heap good--make white boy spend dough like water...no tolerance for uncertainty in white man's head.

Northern Exposure did a pretty good job of debunking that hackneyed figure. It took a lot to get past skinny old Italian guys in black wigs canoeing around North America crying over trash.

Ugh. That true. Anyway, how get Hollywood acting job in 40s and 50s if not talk like Hollywood Injun?

(It's kind of sad and hilarious at the same time when you go back and read the stuff from that era that was taken for granted at the time...there's a Hollywood Indian in one of the Raymond Chandler stories, which are all beautifully written by the way, and he talks just like that.)

BEing in San Diego is definitely a better way.

I meant something even better --- like being in San Diego with lots of olive oil and plenty of cash.

That would be a better...uh, well, it would be a way. And we could all stay at Amos's place.

Thanks, Still.

Definitely one answer to the Question. Noteworthy that of all possible answers so far, two have focused on olive oil.

You're saying that if I press my shirts I'll get oil? How about basketball -- will a full-court press yield even more oil? Can we solve the nation's fuel problems this way? And I'm not sure plain old olive trees will survive here, not like the Russian Olive tree does, and the city won't let you plant any more of them because they're an invasive species.

The Nature of a Better Way--

the

key

is

Here.

Read this book. Study the attitudes toward good food and hard work and wine and art and adventure of new things.

You'll want to wallow in your farmer's market, grow your own olives and press your own oil, you'll want to sample fine wines and good cooking. You'll want to grow your own produce, live healthy, work hard, sleep well at night. And laugh.

The movie was cute, but the book is marvelous.

Bon Appetit!

Heh! Well, perhaps. Cockroaches, if nothing else, are great survivors, so I wouldn't be too quick to judge them for their generally unsavory reputation....as long as they don't overrun my kitchen. Then the gloves are off.

Speaking of which, I had to go on a bitter anti-mouse campaign here over the past 2 months. The house was infested with them for some reason.

Final score: 7 large and prosperous looking mice killed by traps and one prisoner taken unharmed when I fortuitously trapped him in a small box. I would really prefer not to hurt them, all things considered. I took that lucky fellow around the other side of the small lake here...far enough away that he wouldn't come back...and dropped him off at the outdoor wildlife sanctuary place where they have pheasants and other birds in cages. I figured he'd find bird food there aplenty to live on, even in the middle of winter...but he might have had to negotiate for space with the local mice who were already there. Anyway, I gave him about the best chance I could figure out at the time.

Ultimately, I think the Better Way is simply beyond expressing in language, but it would be an approximation to say that it is akin to one enormous Harmony...with no dissonance whatsoever. Dissonance would only appear to occur when one split off various parts of the One Harmony and considered them from certain isolated perspectives, but without grasping the whole.

And that is the general problem of existence: being limited to one's isolated perspectives, and not grasping the whole.

The less one does grasp the whole, the more is one inclined to argue...and to cast judgement...and to take sides in disputes...and to see evil. A host of miseries derive from clinging to one's partialities.

And that is one of the reasons why I think it's a very bad idea to have political parties, come to think of it. It creates perpetual political warfare in a society by setting up oppositional forces. The same is true of having teams in organized sports, but that is a far more innocent form of stylized warfare than what we see occurring in politics, and it usually does a lot less damage to the world (soccer hooligans notwithstanding).

But the fact that I have a problem with political parties AND organized sports also indicates my own partiality and judgement! ;-) And I know it.

Proposition: The Nature of a Better Way Includes More Harmony and Less Dissonance

I would llike to know what BWL has to say about this. Also Kink Khankadoo. And Janie, Maggie, Leedle Hack, and Rapaire. Also Tweed, Bunn, Rustic Rebel and the funny lady from Blueblood, England.

Spoken in the True Cockroach Spirit. Yet, it may be yet to be discovered that Nothing is a Unary, Transcendental and All-Permeating singularity, requiring only a single breath to be fully Known.

Such a moment would indeed make an Archie of a Mehitabel, or vice-versa, depending on how well it was assimilated.

If you do not explore all ways you cannot know which is better, just as you cannot know true repentance until you have explored all that you need not repent of. For only by the experience of nothing can you experience something.

Ah, Cockroach, how misguided is your Guidance. No, verily, I say unto you that only the way you Know is Better can possibly be the better way. Learn this lesson, and learn it well, Cockroach: the Road to Hell is paved with the validation of Wrong Targets. I am certain there is A Better Way which does not involve Lard. At least, that way will lie the Better Way for me and for Mom. Of that I am sure. You, of course, by nature, may be more interested in the Larded Way.

You could do far worse than to emulate the noted sage Ah'man and try it on deep-fried breaded lard sticks. You must try all ways, Grasshopper, not just those that you believe are best.

Happy New Year, Mom.

To All Our Relations
All the two leggeds
The four leggeds
The creepy crawlies and the winged creatures
To all that walks, flies, or crawls upon the ground.
To all that burrows in the earth, swims in the sea
To all that clings to the cravasses and crevises of the mountains and the deep.
To the East, the land of birth, beginning, wakefulness
To the South, the place of light, warmth, hope
To the West, the land of death, sleep, the ancestors
To the North, the place of winter, rest, dormancy
To all our our relations that dwell on and in the Earth
And in the skies above us.
Happy New Year.

The "Table Do Hot" for the weekly Bingo Dinner the other night was:

Horsy Do Overs: Whizzed Cheese On Crackers w/Partially Stuck In It

Salad: Kale and Beet Tops w/Canned Pears, In Its Own Juices

Entry: Some Sort Of Cooked Meat
Roasted Canned Vegetables Outside The Can
Rice Or Something Like That With Stuff In It
Green Or Red Jello With Fruit In It
Bread And Stuff Like That, With Oleo

Desert: Hot Froze Apple Pie With Whizzed Cheese On It

Drinks: Yes.

This is an exact transcript of the menu. You can guess at most of it, but I can't bring myself to describe what is meant by "Whizzed Cheese." Suffice to say that it does NOT come out of a pressurized can.

You don't "feast" at the Legion Hovel. In fact, you'd barely want to eat there if you're starving to death. The specialty of the house is cheap hot dog chunks in cheap macaroni and cheese, both of which are either over- or under- cooked and sometimes both at the same time. The biscuits are burnt on the top and bottom but pure dough in the middle, and it's the only place I've ever been where they can burn the top of a piece of streaky bacon and leave the bottom raw.

But then, most Legionettes and Legionairres aren't exactly gourmands.

Naw, Rap ain't dead. He just staggered out o' the Mudcat Tavern where he was alternatin' identites between Puss'n Boots and the Highway Man.

Showed hisself so bad the landlord's black-eyed daughter slammed the shutter in his face so fast and hard that big gaudy plume he had in his hat got caught in it, and broke right in two, it did.   Not even his horse wanted to be associated with him after that. Ol' Rap stormed out of there on foot, his face blood red with rage and shame. He shoulda headed fer home then, but instead he headed up to the Legion Hovel where they was smokin' some of that salmon. He said he didn't inhale, but that is the only sensible explanation fer him tryin' to wax wise and mystic now.

Oh Lordy. Mom? MOMMMMM! Come quick, Shane's a'headed up to the Legion Hall to join his buddies. We gotta get Rap out of there now!

Do not ask for what you do not want, Grasshopper. Look for the answer within yourself and find there whether or not there is a better way. But to find it you must first discover a worse way, and in finding the worse way you will find the better one. Search within before you ask of others, for only then will you understand the answer when you find it.

A man wished to travel a Great Distance in a short time, and so he asked others to arrange his travel for him and for this he would pay the arrangers gold. And his travel was arranged and it did not cost him much, but as he was flying over the Great Ocean he realized that his seat was so close to the one in front of his he had not placed his feet upon the floor of the carriage since he had left. And he was greatly discomfited. After his business in the far land was completed, he arranged for his own travel and made a compromise between the elegance and useless frippery of First Class and the discomfort of Coach and traveled Business Class. And his compromise made him comfortable, and cost him more gold than Coach but less than First Class.

Learn from this lesson, Grasshopper.
