Winning the trip has nothing whatsoever to do with who pays for it. She can fly in from the ISS for all I care. She won a trip to beautiful Chesterfield, Idaho -- weren't no money involved, and not much of Chesterfield, for that matter.

SRS, does your Salvador Dali tableau have any accompanying noise? I guess there would have been some while they were 'trimming' your trees. Probably nothing to compare with the racket outside my door at the moment though.

I was rudely woken this morning to the din of heavy machinery. Earlier in the year, everything was chaos for weeks while huge new gas pipes were being laid. There was a promise that some time in the future they would be back to replace the temporary road patches with a new surface.

That's all very well, but the notification about it happening today only arrived in the letterbox late yesterday (with Friday's date on it), and I had collected mail earlier. So we were totally taken by surprise. My car is in the yard, and I'm wondering if I'll be able to get it out when I need to.

It's been going since about 7 this morning (it's now 11.30am). As I sit here now, there is continuous machinery noise, beeping, flashing lights, and a pneumatic drill just started up - and all just a few feet from where I am sitting.

Talk about transcendental dysfunction! AAAARRRRGGGGGGHHHHH!

Does it look any better than the Salvador Dali tableau that meets my gaze out all of the doors of my house? They got my back yard trees (hackberry, no loss, it is destryoing the fence and I wish they'd taken it all) and then the neighbor's trees out front. Whew, but its ugly.

Photos at 11, or whenever I get back from hauling the first load of shit crap debris clutter from Moonglow's dormatory room. She is completing her first year of college and must be out of the room by 5pm on Friday. Time flies!

Hold him to it, Stilly; demand a non-refundable round trip ticket, by air. Puddle jumper from Chicago, or maybe Boise...

Whooosshhhh! Slam dunk by Hardly.

It did. (I should get money for offering you such a straight line!)

Now I wish I could transcend the really wierd looking world outside my front door. We thought the wind storm last Wednesday was bad, but you should see what the power company leaves behind when they come through after the fact to "trim" the trees to spec near all of the power lines. I think I know how the ants must feel on the ground after I've gone through with the weed whacker.

"This morning the dentist deadened the right jaw above and below and I look like I've had a stroke."

Picks up drool rag and heads off to take a nap to let this wear off. . .

Maybe that nap will help you transcendental dysfunction.

Geez. I can't even laugh and spit on my monitor properly. This morning the dentist deadened the right jaw above and below and I look like I've had a stroke.

Picks up drool rag and heads off to take a nap to let this wear off. . .

If a phoenix remains in flight for more than four hours he should consult a physician.

" I just dunno what's the matter, doc....I keep trying to rise again, like I am supposed to, but nothing happens....".

"Son, here's a prescription for some Resurrectium. Just what you need...."

Wodda concept, eh? Next thing ya know, Glaxo Smith Kline (GSK), will come out with "Wheel Free!(tm)"

("We can't break your shackles to the wheel permannetly. Only you can do that. But with Wheelfree you can experience safe, reliable transcendence for up to four hours at a time...Known side effects include disorientation, religous conversion, inability to find the body, and vanishment of the material universe...If you experience an out-of-body experience for more than four hours, you should discontinue using WheelFree and consult a metaphysician, a physician, an engineer, a game-show host, or a streetwalker, whichever comes first.")

I am so there....finally, relief from transcendental dysfunction!!

Oh, that is fine indeed. I like it very much. Thanks, Jenny O!

In other news, I am happy to forward a report from the New York Times that life for Gluon is getting more interesting. It seems he is going for the gold, or else the gold is going for him, or something in between, but in any case, because its Spring, more than ever before the quark uncertainties are giving way to the fresh smell of new discovery and the rise of dicovery. This makes Gluon very happy, because he hates being undiscovered. It makes him feel quite beside himself wondering what he will be when found out.

"With huge supermagnets, RHIC accelerates beams of gold nuclei at almost the speed of light in opposite directions through two rings, each 2.4 miles around. As the nuclei collide, quarks and gluons and other basic constituents of matter are briefly liberated, and a shower of subatomic particles provides clues to their identities and energies.

These collisions approximate the first few milliseconds after what scientists postulate was the Big Bang creation of the universe 14 billion years ago. They create a fireball up to 10,000 times as hot as the sun, making a small part of Upton briefly the hottest spot in the universe. Researchers are interested in the quark-gluon plasma made up of loosened particles, the hottest and densest matter there is."

WOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Spooky!

John suggested I post his song "Trainghosts". I can't find a soundbite of it unfortunately - it's a great song! It starts off with a steam train whistle, and the driving 12 string guitar accompaniment is evocative of the rhythmic beat of a steam train rolling along:

TRAINGHOSTS - © John Warner 10/10/92

Where the surf breaks by Kilcunda, there's a Ti-tree covered ridge,
Where the coal trains from Wonthaggi crossed a timber trestle bridge.
The wooden decks are rotting and there's no safe place to stand,
It's grey and weathered pilings have been grained by blowing sand.
Bass Strait's wind moans in the fencelines like a ghostly voice in pain
Like the wailing of the whistle of the westbound Melbourne train.

Chorus:
Coal from the earth, water, air and fire,
The prophet's cloud of rolling smoke forever clawing higher,
The mighty exhaust pounding as the steamer fights the grades,
Now the lines are derelict, the ghostly memory fades, the ghostly memory fades.

There's a line up to Jumbunna where the dairy cattle graze,
Bluegum sleepers lie decayed and fencelines cross the ways.
Along the great embankments rusting rails may still be seen,
But saplings grow among them and the grass is rich and green.
Once the Baldwins scaled these ranges with a pulse that shook the ground,
And they'd stall upon these gradients and their wheels scream wildly round.

The memory is haunted by the iron whistle blast,
The shouting children waving as the morning train rolls past,
The fireman glaring forward through South Gippsland's driving hail,
The jingle of the couplings and the rhythm of the rail.
Here's a rusting iron dogspike and a leaning crossing gate,
And I'm standing in the cutting, knowing that I'm years too late.

Up here on the hill about three or four miles from the tracks, late at night you can here the whistles of the old locomotives as they leave the old roundhouse or the depot and chug off for other places...or it could just be the wind, I guess, since the roundhouse was torn down in the 1950s and the depot is now an office building....

I live quite close to two train tracks, that run parallel north/south, on either side of me. It is probably a mile to one track, perhaps 3/4 to the other. In the evenings when it is quiet elsewhere I occasionally hear this little vibration in my office. My diploma (MA, English, 1999, UTA) is on the wall and it rattles when a train goes by on the nearest of the two tracks. That's the only indication--if I listen closely I can hear the train going by outside.

Quite so, Rapaire. And this train and others like it, don't just go for little runs around the paddock - they go on trips all over NSW, and even across Australia. Until the end of last year, 3801 was managed by 3801 Limited, an organisation specially set up to maintain the engine and organise tours. I've been on it a number of times - one time I especially remember was in September 1997. I had gone to the Newcastle Jazz Festival on it, and was on my way back to the train late in the afternoon and noticed a flag at half mast - it was the day Princess Diana was killed!

3801 has now been sent back to The NSW Rail Transport Museum which also has a program of tours. 3801 Limited is still going, and still runs tours with other steam trains.

3801 was the first steam train to cross the continent from Sydney to Perth - in 1970. My uncle and aunt were on that trip. I have a video (now available in DVD) called 3801- A Legend in Steam which has my Uncle Harold being interviewed - the only footage of him that I know of. He was originally a Scot, with a lovely Scottish lilt in his voice. He liked reciting Robbie Burns poetry. He met my aunt because he was a business associate of my grandfather, who used to buy and sell heavy machinery, including locomotives. He was a lot older than my aunt, but they still had a long and happy marriage because he lived to 94!

The train is older than me!!! It has been in service since 1943, and only stopped being used regularly when steam trains were taken off the NSW railways in 1974. It came back almost straight away though as the star of a short film A Steam Train Passes. There was period of time between 1976 and 1986 when it was out of service and being restored, but since then, it has led - and still leads - a pretty exciting life.

My suburb is a few kms away from any train lines, but late at night when there is scarcely a car on our road and all is silent, I can hear the sound of distant trains, and sometimes I can hear the whistle of 3801 early in the morning. I know its whistle. In fact, on the day that 3801 Limited very reluctantly handed it back to the Rail Transport Museum - which meant it would be housed at Thirlmere instead of in Sydney, I was woken up by its whistle, and it almost seemed like it was calling me.

Yes, I'm afraid I am a sucker for the old steam trains.

The old trains don't have to be polluters, not anymore. I have it on the authority of someone who engineers trains (that is, designs them) that coal-fired steam could be used with little or no impact on the surrounding air, land, or water. But right now diesel is king because diesel was cheaper.

I have mixed feelings about those old trains. They're real polluters, for one thing.

I lived next door to a small historic train venture for a while. He finally went out of business when he pissed off enough neighbors and lost enough lawsuits that he couldn't continue. He used to run "excursions" from the next door proprerty but he provided no restrooms, so the customers would wander into our 10-acre yard to take care of business. And he'd play with his whistle late at night, just to hear it blow. I'd have to call at 11 and midnight and ask him to stop. Finally, my friend who owned the property sued to take the land under the tracks back from him. The Union Pacific railroad was never entitled to sell it when they stopped running their lines, they had an easement only, taken from the farm decades earlier. He had to move his toy three miles down the line to a different bit of track. Good riddance!

SRS, it's true I had the last pinwheel number. Now I'm sitting here patiently spinning on my axis, waiting for the next one, which I don't think is going to happen till we get to 18081. The 18s will be a veritable feast of pinwheel numbers!

If I can watch Rapaire's video from beginning to end, which I did, I'm sure I can wait till 18081.

Actually, it wasn't all that hard watching the video, cos I love steam trains. My uncle, Harold Young, used to be Chief Mechanical Engineer of the NSW Railways, and was responsible for the design of the C38 series steam trains - one of its number, the 3801 is probably the best known and loved of all the steam trains here in NSW. It still does regular runs for the entertainment of the public here

It's pretty slow on the hills, as steam trains are, but on the flat it compares very favourably with modern trains. Now here's something you don't see every day!

I have just listened to a fine CD by Andrew Calhoun, called "Phoenix Envy". I think it is a wonderful title. As a phrase it explains why more people don't post on the MOAB. It has nothing to do with the loading time or the overwhelming prospect of reading 17,000 posts. It is just resentment aagainst the endless spirit of renewal and refreshment which permeates our posts. Phoenix Envy, in short. Freud really missed a bet on that one.

A wonder of who, and the who is the winner
Who has the fine pin for Stilly's new spinner
For the center of the spinner, a pin is the thing
Oh, pine for a pin for the spinner!

A spinner's not spittle unless it can spin
ANd spinning's sporadic without such a pin,
The spinner's pin's pintle is perfect and wins
All the sparks from a spilling spin winner.

All winter no spinner to Stilly was spawned
So scarce were good spinners. and pins were all gone
So spare her a pintle, a punt or a pin,
Spry spinning with pins in, oh, spin,. Stilly, spin!

Amos, I am SICK AND TIRED of your accusations that I don't provide enough BS here! To that I can only say, BAT SHIT! So, here:

BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. (AP) -- An upstate New York couple didn't think a few bats in the attic were much of a problem when they were buying a house last summer.

Months later, they found out how wrong they were when they discovered more than a ton and a half of bat droppings up there.

Nick LaBoda and Jenna Caputo say a home inspector informed them about the bats. They called an exterminator, who told them to wait a while before removing the bats because the babies were too young to fly.

Then they forgot about the bats until they smelled a foul odor in January. When they checked the attic, they found dead bats and piles of guano.

An exterminator says hundreds of bats had been living in the attic, leaving behind 3,500 pounds of droppings.

It cost $25,000 to clean up the mess, and the couple's insurance company wouldn't cover it. They're fighting it out in court.

Perhaps MMario would like to comment?

This brings us to a serious fork in the road; and if you've ever tried to have a conversation with a serous fork, you know it is not a laughing matter.

For centuries, now, we have been appending to our best plans and firmest agreements the concept that we would see them come true "God willin' an' the creek don't rise". The phrase serves similarly to the upiquitous tag-lineof the Muslim world, where even an agreement to meet for breakfast must have Insh'allah tacked on -- if God wills it -- as the ultimate disclaimer of responsibililty.

But now, we have (as I said) a serious parting of ways, as our little prayer has now left the conditional mode and gone from the subjunctive to the simply declarative: THe creek has riz. Stilly makes this abundantly clear, and brings sharply to view that it has even happened before, but we ignored it. This sort of blissful linguistic self-deceit is no longer an option.

So NOW what do we do?

I think we might do well to fall back on "come hell or high water", a qualifier from a more rugged age when folks got done what they meant to do, or died trying. (I don't believe the Arab world has an equivalent, but since they weren't bettiing on the creek anyway, this is immaterial).

Wouldn't that add some color to our pastel lives?

Stilly, the answer is simple: sandbags. Sandbags and 2x4s and Visqueen.

You build a strong frame of 2x4s along your creek's edge, back a bit so the water can rise a little. Staple the visqueen to the frame on the creekside, leaving about three feet loose at the bottom. Put sandbags (fill them only about 2/3 full so they'll settle in among themselves well) on this ground/visqueen overlap and to help reinforce the other side of the frame.

It helps to have duct tape handy. Duct tape is ALWAYS handy to have around.
