The Great Mystery: Why does soft-serve pseudo ice cream give one a much more severe case of "ice cream headache" or "brain freeze" than real ice cream? I can eat regular ice cream by the wheelbarrow-load with no headache, but squirt a little vanilla soft-serve onto a slice of apple pie at some AYCE buffet and I soon remember why I usually have banana pudding. It can't just be a matter of temperature. Heck, most home freezers keep ice cream at 0°F. Maybe they put some kind of chemical additive in the stuff that causes headaches and makes people not want to go back for seconds?

A customer service representative will be with you shortly.

(I've been hearing that for the last half-hour).

Well, we're all kin under the skin -- one man's MOAT is another man's BS as the old saying goes.

But beloved as Dave Barry is, the MOAB is not another MOAT; but I really sympathize with Dave Barry, as he has so many more wild ass BSers to corral than we do!! :D

Well, our posts get quite lengthly and for dial-up MOATies they get quite long to load. So we move to another thread and continue the MOAT there - hence a name variation. But we all stay with Dave Barry threads.

27th iteration?

gee, seems a bit fickle to me. There is only one MOAB. And we all know Mom is perfect - she told us so, so why would we need another?

Amos, I was just directing you to our Castle. We're Dave Barry MOATies. We're not presently on any of the current threads, but MOAT around them. In the true fashion of a MOAT.

A little Dave Barry MOAT history:

"In the worlds before MOAT, Primal Chaos reigned.
Heaven sought order.
But the phoenix can fly only when its feathers are grown.
The four worlds formed again and yet again,
As endless eons wheeled and passed.
Time and the pure essences of heaven, the moisture
of the Earth, the powers of the Dave and the Stealth Blogette
all worked upon a certain blog, old as creation.
And it became magically fertile.
That first egg was named 'Booger'.
Then The Titans showed up and said,
"Feck this! You aint' seen nothin' yet!",
and loosened the boogers of life.
Tathagata Dave, the Father Dave, said,
'With our boogers, we make the world.'
Elemental forces caused the egg to hatch.
From it came a stone MOAT.

And the Father Dave smiled upon the MOAT and said, "Ah, this is Time, Centigrade!"
And the Stealth Blogette looked upon the MOAT and said, "Whaaaaat the F !?"
And The Titans looked upon the MOAT and said, "BOOGERS!"
And Primal Chaos looked upon the MOAT and said, "THIS is weird!"

In the MOAT all things flourished and became.
ALL Matter trivial was discussed, discected and disected.
Beer was iced and the MOATaritas reigned supreme.
The pri-moral ooze begot Pliskin and Fluffy.
Kinky Scores were tallied
and html became a Merit Badge.
MOAT begot the BLOAT, beboogered to The MOAT and begot DC Blunch.
Great ReJoycing and boogering was had by all, except Joyce.
Fertile was the Vegas Invasion, because of begetting and Slip & Slide.
Then The Titans showed up and said,
"BeGoing thus forth (and 5000th post)! Time to move! And bring that Anthem with us!"
Thus became the ReMOAT.

MOATies come and MOATies go.

And the Father Dave smiled upon the ReMOAT and said, "Ah, this is Centigrade, again!"
And the Stealth Blogette looked upon the ReMOAT and said, "Why? And Why me?"

Giant 'Bra Fence' Sparks Controversy

Official Says Fence Offends Asian Cultures, South Africans

POSTED: 1:15 pm EDT July 29, 2005
UPDATED: 8:16 am EDT August 1, 2005

A New Zealand man is resisting demands to take down hundreds of women's bras strung on his farm's fence, according to a Local 6 News report.

"It was probably a novelty for the first six months but I think it's passed and we need to move on," said chairman Bill Gordon. "This town has got lot of Japanese students who get educated here. They are very offended by it as a lot of Asian cultures, South Africans."

For years, women returning from a pub in the nearby town of Wanaka have stopped at the fence and removed their bras.

A local sheep farmer, John Lee, has become the unofficial guardian of the site.

"They have got a magic quality about them, bras," Lee said. "For me, they have all my life."

Women have recently added their own to the fence, gaining the property worldwide publicity.

However, the Wanaka Community Board believes some locals are fed up with the unlikely tourist attraction and want it taken down.

"It was probably a novelty for the first six months but I think it's passed and we need to move on," said chairman Bill Gordon. "This town has got a lot of Japanese students who get educated here. They are very offended by it as are a lot of Asian cultures, South Africans."

Lee defended the bra-adorned fence, saying 90 percent of letters he receives about it are supportive.

He said it was the most photographed attraction in the district."

No, in the case of Freds, they shuffle through subway stations rattling cups to collect change, or lounge outside buildings with odd objects scattered around them. It's guaranteed to have them formally NOT noticed by almost everyone.

The Ralphs are more apparent. You find them in the form of middle-aged Chinese women who stand and say insulting things to your face in Chinese when you didn't notice a part of the sign for the price of individual lichees (don't want to buy a pound, just a couple? Offer a coin and have her point at a smudge on a taped cardboard sign and begin the muttering). Har! sounds different in Chinese, but I couldn't begin to type it for you here.

Off to the waterfront this morning.

Hello from the Big Apple, Amos, Rapaire, BWL and all! I would have rescued mom from the nether regions of the page had I been home to do so. But I was in Brooklyn with my daughter eating Lebonese food then walking around the promenade at Brooklyn Heights. I'm in Manhattan now, testing out the new keyboard, mouse, and monitor I've purchased for the friend who is letting us stay at his apartment in the north end of Greenwich Village (14th St. at 7th Ave.). He isn't here now, he left for a few days, so these are a surprise. He bought a new computer 18 months ago, but kept the old peripherals to use. His old monitor was from sometime around the mid-1990s and his keyboard was practically Neanderthal. His mouse didn't have a wheel for scrolling, just the old two-button mouse job. The cost of this gift is that of a modest hotel for a few nights, not even covering the entire time we're here. He is going to go ballistic before he falls in love with this stuff, but by then I'll be back in Fort Worth. His old monitor was a horror, dark, not adjustible. The keyboard had no media controls (I found one that has a few discreetly placed buttons along the top).

Keep mom afloat! I won't be on the computer often until mid-week.

The new world's size is not at issue. But the very definition of planethood is.

It is the first time an object so big has been found in our solar system since the discovery of Pluto 75 years ago"

More at Space.com's story.

Oddly enough it was a double-whammy week for astronomers looking for planets, who have only "gotten lucky" about a dozen times in the last 4,000 years, if you count the ones found in other systems.

They found ANOTHER one, slightly smaller than Jupiter (70%) but much lighter, and possessing a moon, in orbit out past Neptune.

Here's da story.

A heady day for planet-seekers, eh? Good thing, too -- they don't get many of them!!

WHile I do think of you as a brother, I have to say your imagination seems to be running away with you.

You don't seem to remember that I left that decrepit, judgemental environment when I was fifteen, hitch-hiked to San Francisco and made a career for myself first as a child prostitute and then as an international rock and roll star. I never looked back, while it seems that you never looked forward.

As for Braunschweiger, he is a PhD, to be sure; but having a PhD in matters of spin and charge does not make him a "spin doctor" anymore than it puts him "in charge". Those in-charge doctors are the ones you were warned about at an early age, but you couldn't be arsed....sigh.

...Hans Schumacher of the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt, Braunscheig, Germany...

So, this Braunscheiwger is probably a PhD. And you trust the word of a spin doctor? Amos, I thought I'd taught you better than that! And if I didn't, Mom certainly did. I remember her telling you just the other day, "Amos, if you keep believing everything those spin doctors say you'll end up just like poor old Bee-Dubya-Ell! Now eat your noodles and I don't want you listening to Those People any more. You hear me?" And then she smacked you upside the head with a spatula, just to reinforce the point, even though I expected her to whap you on TOP of the head to try and reduce the point.

That was the night we had your favorite food, liver 'n' noodles, remember? You called it "patty de fubar noodles" and laughed so hard you fell off your chair and spilled your milk and I cleaned it up so that Mom wouldn't have to get down on her aching old arthritic hands and knees to do so. We had your favorite braunsheiwger cake with chocolate icing for dessert, too.

So you were warned about believing everything these spin doctors say.

Electrons on speed? What is this world coming to. I think those electrons should be content to just go at their normal velocity - society today is too quick to just prescribe drugs for conditions that don't require them.

electrons on speed, indeed! Next we'll be having quarks on crack!

You will be delighted to hear that electrons are now being taught to go ballistic at great speed:

NEW SPINTRONIC SPEED RECORD. Spintronics is the science devoted to
gaining greater control over digital information processing by
exploiting electron spin along with electron
charge in microcircuits.

One drawback to implementing a scheme of
magnetic-based memory cells for computers has been the relatively
slower speed of spin transistors. Hans Schumacher of the
Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt, Braunscheig, Germany, has now
devised the fastest yet magnetic version of a random access memory
(MRAM) cell, one that switches at a rate of 2 GHz, as good as or
better than the fastest non-magnetic semiconductor memories. The
MRAM architecture is a sandwich, consisting of two magnetic layers,
with a tunneling layer in between.

When the magnetic layers are
aligned (their spin orientation is the same) resistance in the cell
is low; when they are counter-aligned resistance is high. These two
conditions establish the binary 1 or 0 states.

The speed of writing
or reading data to and from the cells has, for MRAMs, been limited
to cycle times of 100 MHz by magnetic excitations in the layers.
This problem has now been overcome, according to Hans Schumacher
(hans.w.schumacher@ptb.de), through a novel approach referred to as
ballistic bit addressing. In the case of the new MRAM architecture,
the influence of magnetic excitations is eliminated through the use
of very short (500 picosecond)
current pulses for carrying out the write operation and that even a
bit whose value will remain the same undergoes a complete 360-degree
precession, whereas a change of status (say, from a 0 to a 1) will
be achieved by pivoting the magnetic status of the cell through 180
degrees.

The 2-GHz switching speed (the rate at which writing can be
accomplished) is faster than static RAM (or SRAM) memories,
currently the fastest memories, can accomplish. Furthermore, the
magnetic memories are non-volatile, which means that the status of
the memory does not disappear
if the computer is shut down.

(Schumacher, Applied Physics Letters,
25 July 2005; and Journal of Applied Physics, August 1;
