It appears new light has been shed on the retirement of Bookman--a change in faith, a crisis of Doubte, and a terrible undermining of the deep certain solace of Information Science. Ah, sic transit gloria et certitudine mundi!!

East Texas Tomatoes.

Sounds like a college basketball team.

The complete man recognizes the whirlpool of being around him and embraces it for what it is; the incomplete man looks at it and structures it out of existence by saying, "I have information."

You spend your life trying to sort out the truth. You mine the richness of human endeavours throughou thistory, the ancient and the new. You are diligent. You memorize Dewey categories and binary systems of classification. You master EXchangeable Faceted Metadata Language, Faceted classification, Freinet classification, Functional Requirements for Authority Data and 100 more schemas seeking to embrace all the world's collected knowledge with its provenance, its authorities, its cross-references, it factyness. And WHAT HAPPENS??? A buncha Yahoos come along and create Infinitely Renewably Universes of Fictitious Realities (IRUOFR) and the whole lifetime of effort is just laid waste, just like that. It's like Bugs Bunny and Yosemite Sam suddenly being in charge of the AEC or the TVA. It's ORFUL, is what.

Yes, Wongago was in fact his full name, but to his friends he was known simply as "Wongo".

You're both wrong. Penicillin was discovered in 1811 by an African Chimpanzee named Wongo. He was a distant relative of Chongo. Wongo discovered penicillin while trying to find tasty bugs in hollow logs. After diligent investigation he decided that penicillin, while interesting in its own right, was pretty much useless to Chimpanzees. He made some brief notes in his journal about it and pursued the matter no further.

INdeed. I am talking about that WW2 development, starting from scraping mold supplies out of old milk bottles and gearing up to government-scale production starting shortly after Pearl Harbor.

Penicillin was "discovered" by Alexander (not Ian) Fleming in 1928. Purification was needed, and clinical trials in 1942 demonstrated Penicillin's potential. The US managed to produce 2.3 million doses in time for the Normandy Invasion. There were some scientific awards because of this research....

Well there isn't much news except that Tuesday is warm, Mom. I am reading about the development of penicillin just as WW 2 was starting. Interesting stuff.

I have NO parotid gland on the left side and one third of a parotid on the right side (the right side was a cell phone induced tumour). Talk cheese and my cheeks suck up in pain. When I walk by the cheese in the grocery store, same thing.

Oh, cheeses keeeeriste I love you my cheddar dearest but I can't even bear your memory!

Beware the cheese. Too much will mess you up.... 5:45h on the operating table the last time. All for the love of (too much) cheese.

Hey, you ever see my chipmunk pics? Cheeeeeses they are nasty!

Not a problem, LH. Let's all save belly button lint and send it to LH for Christmas! We wouldn't want him to go hungry, would we?

By the way, some of the best blue cheese I've ever eaten I bought earlier this summer from a stall at our local farmer's market. The place was called "Shepherd's Cheese" and was made from ewe's milk.

I'll let you all in on a well-kept secret. The best cheddar cheese in the world comes from just west of where Rap is living. My brother sent a can (yes, a can) of aged cheddar cheese at xmas last year and I only now opened it. 30 ounces is a fair amount of cheese and I waited till I thought I'd have a few people around to help eat it. Cougar Gold Aged Cheddar Cheese has to be shipped cold-pack right now, but I'm telling you, this is like the sharpest crumbliest sharp white New York Cheddar you've ever tasted. Break out the toaster oven, MOM, I'm going to make some open-face grilled cheese sandwiches!

Carbon dioxide, a covelently bonded molecule, constitutes about .039% of the atmosphere, less than 400 ppm by volume. The entire atmosphere contains 3.16x10^15 kilograms of the stuff. So what would it take to drag it out of atmosphere and convert it, say, to reels and reels of carbon-fiber monofilament for use in construction and manufacturing? We are not all that far away from the kind of molecular manipulation needed to do this on an industrial scale, and it would reset the imbalance of anthropogenic greenhouse effect to a merked degree. Probably netter than killing all those pine trees to make cheap 2x4s out of. I dunno...

Is that funny little light I see a mote on the camera lens, or is it a glint in Ma Eiseley's eye? I'd stay hunkered down below the level of the window sills for a while longer if I were you, Rap.

That's not true. None of it. Please tell her that you don't believe it. She's outside my house, a noose in one hand and a sawed-off shotgun in the other.

She was at a Church Camp, teaching basket weaving to little girls. Or something. Something innocent and innocuous. All of her boys are neat, "A" students, well dressed, polite, and little gentlemen.

Really.

Please don't let her hurt me.

Folks, you should know that the real reason Eiseley was "camping" in the mountains was because The Law was after her. Seems like she couldn't account for her being in a bank at the same time it was robbed and why the note was in her handwriting. But the FBI gave up the search when they found she was riding with a tough gang -- her three sons. Out here they're called "Ma Eiseley's Boys" and they are mean and tough. The oldest escaped from jail about a month ago by biting through the bars, the youngest drinks a quart of whiskey and chews an entire plug of tobacco before breakfast. Naturally, their mom makes them each shoot someone -- the Old West "Man For Breakfast" tradition, you know -- before any of them ca

Home now from the mountains where it was so cool that I needed a sweater and the campfire felt really nice. All day it was pleasant in the sun, and when that got too hot, I would move to the shade until that got too cold. We hiked around a lovely lake and saw deer and moose and many, many squirrels.

My youngest son came up to me and whispered, "Come with me, Mom, I think we've found some gold. Shhhh." I walked with him to a little stream where he and two cousins had discovered sparkling flakes of mica. We panned for awhile, but when there were no nuggets to be found, we moved on to other activities.

Gee, the 89F temp this afternoon (12.9% humidity) with a bit of a breeze felt great as we were eating dinner on the back deck. Garden is doing okay, too, but I've got a lot of transplants and I worry about them.

Do what Chongo would do...

1. Get mad about it!
2. Threaten to shoot the weatherman if things don't improve!
3. Blast off a few rounds into the unresponding sky!
4. Say "Oh, the hell with it!" and have another glass of whisky.

I need to transport my property to the Pacific Northwest, preferably somewhere about 50 miles north of Seattle on Puget Sound. As a North Texas resident I am about completely melted from this heat. My garden is struggling - the idea with keeping it alive now is that when it cools in the fall I will get tomatoes and such. Right now everything is just miserable. All next week the forecast is the same - the highs range from 100 - 102.

Some like it hot, hot, hot...

But I don't so I am staying inside with both AC's (just for your A) cranked and watching the World Cup. GO USA!!!

I've got a 12 and a 13, both portables, one in my office hardpiped (well, plastic hose) to the set tub in the cellar, one dripless in the dining room, and they keep the place chilly until we have at least several days in a row of temps of 35 daytime and 20 at night which hasn't happened yet this year, thank goodness.

After the winter we had, we deserve a break with high summer not being as high as usual. last year, we had no spring. It went from winter to nasty hot in a day early on and it stayed hot until mid-fall... Mum didn't get out of her house except to grab the newspaper from the mailbox next to her back door a half dozen days. Of course, twere'nt near as bad as that there Texan had it last summer but you know them there Texans always do things in a BIG way.

Speakin a that there Texan, how's yer tamaters this year anyways eh?
