And I fell asleep on the couch about 15 minutes into the first movie. Woke up a little after 11:00 with a painful neck because of the awkward angle, and stumbled off to bed.

One more cuppa then I'm gonna go finish potting stuff up, mop floors, then watch more movies. If I had a fishing pole, I'd go down to the river and do a little fishing.

Janie, I got a lot farther on the garden today because the rain held off until between 4 and 5 (All Things Considered was on the radio in the garage as I came and went to put tools away in a hurry). So the Merlot that accompanied my dinner has about put me to sleep (I thought I was going to have lamb over rice, but the frozen meat turned out to be a petite sirloin, so I had the rice on the side and the chard on the side and no Middle Eastern spices or yogurt over the top).

I rebuilt the wheelie for the kayak, Mom. The axle was too long. Now it is snug. We shall see how it handles the weight.

BBW has returned from a weekend at her mother's and was welcomed home with a gaily colored printed welcome sign, a made bed, a chilled glass of wine and some crackers and cheese, all the chores done and things as she likes 'em. There's no special subtext, those of you with plot-hungry minds, just simple delight and affection. I just took her car out and had all the freeway bugs and such cleaned up and it looks shiny again.

In her absence I not only got some of my own writing done, I also read Candide and Call of the Wild and half of Crome Yellow. All of them from a simpler and more innocent--but not less attentive and certainly more thoughtful time.

Oooh, I decided to be tres indulgent since the weather cancelled my gardening and shed painting plans.

Just put a Pinot Grigio, a tenderloin fillet and a bunch of asparagus in the fridge for tomorrow, deciding I am important enough to go to the trouble to fire up the charcoal for me, myself and I.   Then uncorked the Petite Sirah to keep me company while I sit outside and watch the rain and the birds going hard at the mulberry tree for the next 20 minutes or so.   'Twill go well with the brie as soon as it warms up a bit.   Rented 4 movies, two for tonight, one for early tomorrow morning, and one for tomorrow night. Tomorrow afternoon, I'll finish the Kaye Gibbons novel I started a month ago but haven't had time to get back to.

MOM, you wanna come spend Memorial Day with me? I'll be happy to share the fillet.

While he's in the mountains I'm moving dirt the size of mole hills. Working in the garden for the good of my family and the planet, while he's out chugging hydrocarbons into the air, traveling hither and yon to snap a few pics and go to the next tourist spot.

I leave it to you to determine which of us is spending a more virtuous Memorial Day Weekend.

MOM, want some fresh chard from the garden with dinner this evening? Good!

While it is unfair to take advantage of Rapaire while he is off nuzzling the grand tetons, I thought the following excerpt from an English site explaining an obscure annual ritual might help clarify his obdurate state of error.

"The Hunting of the Earl of Rone is one of over 500 unique calendar customs that take place at various times of year throughout England. Banned in 1837, for licentiousness and drunken behaviour, the Hunting of the Earl of Rone was revived in 1974. Over the four days of the Spring Bank Holiday weekend, the Grenadiers, Hobby Horse, Fool and villagers hunt through the village for the 'Earl of Rone', finally finding him on the Monday night. He is mounted back-to-front on a donkey and paraded through the village to the sea. He is frequently shot by the grenadiers and falls from the donkey only to be revived by the Hobby-horse and Fool, re-mounted on the donkey, and carried onwards to his fate. At the final shooting on the beach, he is not revived, but thrown into the sea.

Local legend says that he was Hugh O'Neill, Earl of Tyrone, who was forced to flee from Ireland in 1607 and was shipwrecked in the local bay known as Raparee Cove. Hiding in the woods and surviving only on ships' biscuits, he was eventually captured by a party of Grenadiers sent from Barnstaple.

There is no historical evidence that Hugh O'Neill ever landed in North Devon and history tells us that he actually reached Spain and lived out his life there, so why he should become the focus of the custom is a mystery - although there are plenty of theories!

Perhaps the locals were celebrating the defeat of a famous contemporary outlaw by a local landowner, a Chichester, who was the sovereign's Lord Deputy in Ireland at the time. Perhaps the Irish population in the village, who worked the mines, were in sympathy with O'Neill and his attempts to have Ireland ruled by the Irish. Some people think the custom is the last remnant of medićval May Games, others like to think that it is a pre-Christian, pagan, green man custom that has survived with the O'Neill legend attached to it. The Earl of Rone is seen as a scapegoat by others. People believe what they want to believe whether there is evidence or not - even those who take part have different ideas."

Raparee cove, of course, is named with the very word that Rapaire could not use in selecting his Mudcat handle, either because he was unsure of its spelling or because some deadbeat fourflusher had beat him to it.

I will the wish that never was
Because
And want to change all natural laws
Because
I fling defiance at the moon
For being much too near and soon
And knowing words but never tunes,
Because.

I dance along the ocean crest,
Because.
And never fight for what is best,
Because.
I throw the dishes in the trash
And dance in traffic, fast and rash,
And bring nuns to my birthday bash,
Because.

I walk alone upon the strand,
Because
And love the family of Man
Because
I hope to conquer gravity
(And mass, which is depravity)
And find the force of quantum fuzz
Because.

I dream of magic words and deeds
Because
While reading (once again) Candide,
Because.
I plan to roam the multiverse
For better physics or for worse,
But do not plan on growing terse.
Because.

Mom:

The new guitar is sweet--it has that sort of rinkydink sound you used to hear in the 60's, before everyone started playing Martins, when nylon strings were often used by beginners and their stumbling efforts at "Freight Train" or "Babe, It Ain't No Lie" would ring out from their lonely bedrooms in the suburban nights and you were thirteen and glad to have any guitar at all and the high-schoolers didn't understand and kept swooning over Buddy and Elvis, but you knew that the real cool was those old Leadbelly and Weavers and Burl and so you kept on practicing and learning to play Freight Train, and it was almost all good. That kind of sound, an unpretentious Spanish acoustic from Korea named after an American moutain range.

In the case were two music books. One of them had, bound into it, a tear-out page with a pop-out vinyl record in it labeled 33 1/3!! It has chords and tuning lessons on it, I think. I amm nnot going to take it out from its original binding.   The music books sold for $2.95 each and came from the store in a hwite paper back with green printing on it that showed notes floating around, and a person with glasses smiling, and the slogan, "Music is for Everybody!" It reminded me of an earlier, more innocent time.

I'm not saying a better time, but certainly earlier, and a lot more innocent.

Oh, mom!! I have gotten so many errands done and it is only 130. I yam a Good Boy.

The car is all washed up, and the shopping is done.

On my way home, I drove past a garage sale and saw a bright shiny acoustic glinting at me. I pulled over and walked back, and there was indeed an old cardboard case with a nylon-string guitar, from around 1975 or so. Modleed on a Goya, it was labeled "Sierra" and was actually made in Korea.

I spent about fifteen minutes tuning it and noodling and found it was well-fretted and scaled true, and had a nice tone.

I walked away with it for twenty dollars.

I couldn't even dine out for that money!! And I will have many hours of pleasure from it. So I say, it was a deal.

Mom, the new kayak works very well, and thanks to the rollers I installed it is easy to load and unload. The extra length gives it a slightly better glide in calm water, but the same advantage when using one person in the stern means the forward 2/3 are more exposed in the air making for windage. This is just an idiosyncrasy of the craft, not a drawback.

But I do not like the storage arrangement as well as I did on the other one. And the cockpit does not drain as handily. The scuppers come with little rubber plugs on strings to put in them, for reasons I do not understand, because if you ship water while they are in, the water just stands.

I handbuilt the trailer for the front end (used when dragging the kayak around on land) but I under specced it and the axle is not taking the weight. It bends. I may need to rethink the whole design. Sigh....

But I was out at dawn discussing things with a very vociferous herd of sea lions who have a perch on some of the rocky bluffs just south of La Jolla Cove. THat was wunnerful, by my green candle!.

Away! Heave away!

Away on the BS shore.

And when the seasons came about,
Away! Heave away!
THis BS bard came skitterin' out!

In California it might qualify you for a bailout. Underprivileged alien and all that. At the very least it would mean they could not legally put you in a cell. I mean, it only stands to reason you can't put someone in a cell without a cell phone. It would be like waterboarding or something...

Now, this enlightened policy might not obtain in, say, Idaho. So I would suggest you not press your luck.

At 29 and two-six-five
The MOAB thread was still alive.
Her pulse was weak, her visage pale,
Her smile was forced, her thoughts were stale,
Her pals had wandered here, and yon,
A threadbare muumuu had she on;
She rambled, uncomposed in mind,
And pallid were all vital signs.
But still to answer she did strive,
By God, our Mom was still alive.
And as I held her hand and prayed,
I heard her mumble, pause and say,
PRESS ON! And reach that Thirty Kay!!
And then fell back, to catch her breath,
And once more fend off looming Death,
ANd rest, and catch her breath awhile;
But through it all, a flickering smile
Made me believe I'd see the day
When Mom slid home to Thirty Kay!

Hi, Mom:

I am very frustrated today. I was finally, once and for all time, going to put an end to the huge intractable mess at the Neil Young Center for the Terminally Screwed, by god. I was going to close it down, permanently. Spaw had no business inventing the place anyway, all his perfervid justifications notwithstanding.

But no-o-o-o, now it turns out that everyone who thought it was a great solution really meant as long as it costs them nothing, and they won't vote for the funds to do it. ALso, they are afraid to let the crackpots loose for fearthey will spray the contents of their bedpans along downtown Main Street in Saint Paul.

I think I will have to sell off all the assets of the Shatner School for Bad Acting in order to raise enough dough to fold up the NYCFTTS, but it has to be done; it is an ethical obligation of the first order.

Earlier this week I had a couple of calls through the downtown jail system--the prisoner randomly dials and the system asks the recipient if you will accept the charges. There is a point in the recorded message where the inmate is supposed to insert their name, but this one said "please accept it is an emergency." Since I don't know anyone who is in jail, I imagine the emergency is entirely in this guy's head, and possibly his desire to try to piggyback more calls on one I would be incredibly gullible to accept. They say they've fixed that glitch, but I doubt it.

I don't think it sounded like one of the Legion Hall boys, anyway.
