Hey, there, Mama! Let's vote for Obama!!

Seriously, I was delighted to hear back from the local gunsmith that my recently inherited 410 shotgun, and the .22-long Colt revolver, are both in excellent condition, and are ready to go. He is test-firing them, and I will pick them up this afternoon. There is not much to do with them, of course, in our urban environment, but there are a few ugly racoons who keep pawing up my back yard that I would like to meet. And BBW and I will take some training, for the sake of the neighbors... :D

Did you? I am sorry. But here's hope from the New York Times science department:

"Another contentious issue is whether the cosmologists in their calculations could consider only the observable universe, which is all we can ever see or be influenced by, or whether they should take into account the vast and ever-growing assemblage of other bubbles forever out of our view predicted by eternal inflation. In the latter case, as Alex Vilenkin of Tufts University pointed out, "The numbers of regular and freak observers are both infinite." Which kind predominate depends on how you do the counting, he said..

In eternal inflation, the number of new bubbles being hatched at any given moment is always growing, Dr. Linde said, explaining one such counting scheme he likes. So the evolution of people in new bubbles far outstrips the creation of Boltzmann brains in old ones. The main way life emerges, he said, is not by reincarnation but by the creation of new parts of the universe. "So maybe we don't need to care too much" about the Boltzmann brains," he said.

"If you are reincarnated, why do you care about where you are reincarnated?" he asked. "It sounds crazy because here we are touching issues we are not supposed to be touching in ordinary science. Can we be reincarnated?"

"People are not prepared for this discussion," Dr. Linde said.

..."

This article may be the most inchoate piece of writing I have yet seen in the Gray Lady, perhaps good evidence of early-onset Alzheimer's in her corporate consciousness. Or this may jsut be a reflection of the hard task of cosmologists, doomed to ponder the imponderable and reason about the unreasonable.

Of course it is. I died to make it so, didn't I?

I suspect it refers to the period of summer wqhen the salad plants are in bloom, tomatos on the vine, etc -- mebbe July-August.

Where did the term "salad days" come from? I know what it means, but I don't really see the analogy. What's supposed to be so incredibly great about salad (as opposed to all the other things one might be eating)?

I meant flensing, as with blubber hooks.

Ewwww, indeed. A sort of Solipsist Bobbitt routine, gaaah.

But with Rapaire, all things are possible.

fensing or flensing? I don't think hot water is enough to take off the blubber, though if Rap took along one of his sabres I suppose he could do some sort of nasty hot water self-

ew, never mind.

Don't do that -- your salad days are long past, old chum.

PLease do not render yourself, could sir. The environment was not made for fensing or trying your physical self. It would of course provide you wiht some remarkable spiritual karma, but whether good or bad has not been determined at this time.

Have a good trip and don't render Pat, either.

If you render yourself in one of the hot spots you'll probably get a ticket from one of the rangers. Just so you know.

Amos, nude bathing is permissible in Yellowstone in the winter -- in fact, you can do it all year 'round. Some of those hot pots will not only remove your clothing, but your skin, body fat, internal organs and all. If you drop your wallet or cell phone in it's best just to let it be.

(I'm not making this up, you know. Pop into some of the hot pots or fumurules and in three or four days you'll be a skim of grease.)

We've shared the road with moose, LH. And like bison, you SHARE the road -- they use whatever part they want to and you use whatever's left.

I am sure, based on your history, that you have everything completely rationalized and figgered out, Rapaire. Pat didn't look at the Black's Beach brochure before suggesting Yallerstone.

"sharing the roads with elk and bison"

Oh my! Who could resist that? But I'll tell you something, Rap, you have not truly shared a road until you have shared it with a moose! A really big moose. Yes indeed. That's sharing, by God. Everyone should experience it at least once. ;-)

Ha! More jealousy! We'll be sharing the roads with elk and bison while you two are fighting freeway traffic! I'll be visiting the Paint Pots and Old Faceful!

As for the cold -- the snowcoaches are heated and we'll be wearing our full complement of cold weather gear: Sorel boots, parkas (well, not REAL parkas, but what they sell for parkas), extreme cold weather undies, maybe even my insulated coveralls.

Ha! again.

One up RAPAIRE?   Are you joking? I wouldn't know where to care to begin commencing such aproject!!!!

I just thought nano-pores was an interesting breakfast discussion for Mom.

Of course Rapaire is welcome to come down to Scripps and sunbathe on the beach. It would do him a world of good. And I bet Pat would like it more than getting doused by Old Faithful...

Why bother MOM with it then? Are you trying to one-up Rapaire? Don't worry about it--he'll freeze his butt off down there at Yellowstone. I thought you'd be coming up with alternative venues for him to consider. A hotel in Coronado or a visit to Mission Beach, perhaps? A dip at Scripps would be nice.

Noise in solid-state nanopores
R. M. M. Smeets*, U. F. Keyser*,, N. H. Dekker*, and C. Dekker*,

We study ionic current fluctuations in solid-state nanopores over a wide frequency range and present a complete description of the noise characteristics. At low frequencies (f 100 Hz) we observe 1/f-type of noise.

We analyze this low-frequency noise at different salt concentrations and find that the noise power remarkably scales linearly with the inverse number of charge carriers, in agreement with Hooge's relation. We find a Hooge parameter = (1.1 ± 0.1) x 10?4. In the high-frequency regime (f 1 kHz), we can model the increase in current power spectral density with frequency through a calculation of the Johnson noise.

Finally, we use these results to compute the signal-to-noise ratio for DNA translocation for different salt concentrations and nanopore diameters, yielding the parameters for optimal detection efficiency

I am afraid I find this hard to believe.

All cells have evolved strategies to rapidly adapt to shifts in the environment. Cells detect these changes via stimulant molecules that bind to membrane receptors on their surface, which trigger a cascade of intercellular reactions.

However, because these interactions between external stimulants and receptors are so transient, they are extremely tricky to detect and monitor. Gilad Barnea et al. have engineered a highly sensitive assay for identifying these fleeting events. The authors linked three common receptor types?G protein-coupled receptors, receptor tyrosine kinases, and steroid hormone receptors?to a transcription factor via a tether with a cleavage site for a protease.

When these receptors are activated, a protease releases the transcription factor, which then activates a reporter gene in the nucleus. All the genes used in this system originate from outside the cell. These genes thus provide a unique biochemical pathway that is protected from interference from the cell's own signaling molecules. Barnea et al. exploited this assay to identify chemerin as a ligand for the orphan receptor, GPR1. ? B.T.

Dear Mom,

Next Saturday and Sunday (and possibly Monday) I won't be around much if at all. Pat and I are taking a mid-Winter holiday. We have reservations for a tour of the Firehole River and for a cabin...oh, I forgot to mention...we're going to Yellowstone again. Our cabin will be within a couple hundred yards of Old Faceful and everything. We'll go in from West Yellowstone by snowcoach, tour by snowcoach, and leave by snowcoach on Monday afternoon.

Yes, I promise to dress warmly and wear my long underwear.

The Child You Most Esteem,
R

Clever editing on the potato cannon, but I don't think hitting the monitor was the most impressive shot. There was a pumpkin in there that was nicely lit from the side that really was the best for a parting shot. In my opinion.

MOM, I'll be cleaning out the garage some more this afternoon. Is there anything that has been missing for a long time that you want me to look for?

Such exist, and my wife was adamant about my NOT turning the old satellite TV mast in the backyard into one (it's just a piece of pipe that stic vertically from the ground about 6 feet; I don't know how far down it goes but I do know that it's set in a LOT of concrete.

But there are Other Things, and now that I'm well into adulthood I can buy the parts without question. Stuff like LOX and kerosene, or RFNA, or liquid air and alcohol, or...well, let's just say that I'm awaye of the Potentialities.

There are actually videos of young idiots allowing themselves to get shot with one of these things. Bet not many of them are stupid enough to do it again. It's pretty clear there are a lot of kids messing with these things that absolutely do not get how dangerous they are. (And probably some older idiots also.)

Rapaire,

Of course I'm sending a sprouted get-well potato to you in Idaho. What could possibly have more symbolic value to an Idahoan (Idahoian? Idahoite?) Besides, it was homesick. Kept me awake most of the night, sobbing into it's pillow.

It is in the mail.    Hope it doesn't freeze before it gets there.

Maybe I shouldn't have sent it air mail. I understand cargo holds get pretty frosty at high altitudes.

Oh. I'm not saying I don't sense the positive ion bias and the chemical smells. I doubt I'd be comfortable working there either.

In a recent NPR report there was a discussion of the thesis that here is a single gene which activates toxin removal and cleanup, and those who do not have said gene (I forget its number) are highly more disposed to come down with asthma, for example, than those who do, by a significant percent.

I understand that exactly, LH. I don't walk down those aisles unless I have to. The ones with cleaners and the ones with plastics. And in the craft store, I can't walk down the aisle with artificial flowers and plants, but I don't know if that is from plastic or dust.

True, but it was primarily the air in the place, Amos. Simply no doubt about it. I had to get out of there to realize that. Now I notice immediatly how bad the air is when I enter that mall, and specially the stores that are full of plastics products. Another place that's seriously toxic is the aisle in your supermarket where all the household cleansers are. Go there sometime, stand there, and smell the air. If you can't detect what I'm talking about, then I guess you are either invulnerable or just don't have a working sense of smell.
