The most un-pheasant son a mother-plucker seen on the range, I am sure. Sigh. Odd, sometimes, the grandest delusions do not involve being loved, but being feared; not being wise, but being dangerous; winning obeisance and trembling instead of sturdy friendship amongst free equals. One wonders why that is.

So does Two, and Eleven.

Seven is watcing Sesame Street, so he doesn't care.

I am not a pheasant plucker, I'm a pheasant plucker's son. So you just better call me a son of a pheasant plucker instead of what you do call me. And don't say you don't. I know better. So just stop calling me a pheasant plucker, okay? That was my father, not me. I pluck geese, ducks, quail, chickens -- anything except pheasants. You could say that I'm an unpheasant plucker.

written by a friend - to the tune of "little white duck"

Little Dead frog
Lying in the gutter
Little dead frog
gases make him sputter
Little dead frog
he goes good with butter
Little dead frog eat him up!
Yum!

As you meander down the road
Take care to watch for the wand'ring toad
For a toad that's crushed beneath your wheels
Will look quite sad when it congeals

Bear mats, cars, and a fancy mansion
Won't excuse the lack of scansion.

What's all this then?

This is a BS thread - not a counting thread

I lost my bear mat.

It's unnecessary for me to delve
Into obscure things for 20K four and twelve.

Oh, my profound apologies; it was the right number in LH's little doggerel. Rapaire, as might have been predicted, is inventing a tangent of his own. He's a veritable tangenterine, much like the U.S. Tangenterines, who are semper fi and often awry.

I have no desire to get into heaven, thank you. I intend to design one of my own, as soon as I can shuck this mortal confabulation of addictive electro-magnetic frequencies and genetic overrides.

Whatever was on my breakfast plate
I think I've tossed: 20K, two hundred and eight.

LH, you can't just make up numbers like that. It's against the rule.

Now that could make any Halloween decor downright in bad taste all of a sudden. Fall wreaths (leaves collected and preserved) might be a good touch the span the holiday and remain as a memorial memento.

No, it was from associating with politicians and similar low-life for two days.

And yesterday Barbara Marshall, for whom (with her late husband) the Library is named, died. They don't teach you what to do in cases like this in Library School, but I've take Certain Steps.

Damn!

Could be iron deficiency. Have you tried nibbling on one of your sabers?

That would restore your vitality and make you a saber-toothsome tiger indeed.

Sorry, Amos. I was (and am) too tired to do anything about it. I thought about it, but decided not to take it.

Congratulations on your achievement. I know how very much the number 20,400 means to you and I'm glad you got it. It is, after all, a very even number.

Dunno. All I recognized among the bronzes was a Fred Remington. I can tell you that there wasn't a fake in the bunch, though. And his ceiling looked better than most people's hardwood floors.

Any bronzes by Bob Scriver? He was a Montana sculptor who did a lot of those western cowboy and horse themes.

Ninja Parade Slips Through Town Unnoticed Once Again ...

Modesto, CA residents turned out for the city's annual Ninja Parade, where no ninjas were seen for the 30th year in a row. ...

I love long standing traditions, especially those dealing with the svelte, the subtle, the invisible and the insouciant.

No, I've been in a "Leadership Summit" that hasn't yet told me anything I didn't know.

Except...Jim Rogers' Ranch House is a simple little place: fireplace, concert grand piano, gold-plate and engraved "James Arness" commemorative Colt .45s in hand-tooled holsters slung over a hand-tooled saddle with genuine silver bullets in the bullet loops of the gunbelt, a few well-chosen Western-themed paintings from unknown artists like Fred Remington and Chuckie Russell on the walls, several other saddles including one sporting a LOT of silver filigree and conchos, the occassional bronze statue with a Western theme...all in a house bigger than most churches. Just a typical, lower-end, Pocatello home....

(And Mom -- what I've just written in the above paragraph is absolutely true and doesn't even begin to describe the half of it. The man even has his outhouse inside, just like the Legion Hovel, only his isn't just a hole in the ground! The pistols were found by the city's risk manager who wanted to seize them as a risk hazard.)

In this case, I can assure you, I was not in the least disquieted.

And that is how you capture the Great Number, such as

Oh, no, not at all. I was gallivanting around the universe, in my best cavalier fashion -- you know -- long feathered hat, high-top boots, purple underpants on the outside, tights and a velveteen jacket, rapier in hand, lace cuffs. You get the picture. High fashion for cavaliers.

Comet Holmes. Been watching it on APOD. Discovered by Sherlock Holmes in the 1870s or so, as I remember, and used by James Moriarty as the basis of his work on the dynamics of an asteroid.

Dear Mom,

The Mayor has taken it into his little head to have a City Leadership Summit out at Jim Rogers' ranch (vide this Jim Rogers and it starts promptly at noon today. It's just out past Fire Station 5, so it's not far off, but it will run until 8:30 p.m. today and until noon tomorrow. All Department heads and the whole damned City Council is expected to be there, so I will be sorta out of touch for a bit. Please don't punish me for hanging around with politicians and other low-lifes; I'll also be hanging around with Good Folks who work for a living.

I'll pop in and see how you are when I can.

Your fave rave,
Rapaire

A charming idea, I am sure; but I urge you to think carefully about the consequences. You would be ruining a perfectly workable relationship.

And your dialup would prove most unsatisfactory, I believe, for reasons that would be very hard to diagnose.

Invite "Shane" (wherever he is) to use the house when you're not there. You could even get him a cheap pickup to put up on blocks in the driveway, an old fridge on the back patio for beer, and having been to San Diego I can guarentee he can find a skank or two....

Use it as a vacation cabin. Trap a few raccoons and skunks and stretch the hides in the backyard, catch few fish and clean 'em and let the guts ripen up for stink bait...why, the possibilities are endless.

Hey, LH! I just noticed (on another website) that the house next door to Amos' is for sale! With the Canadian dollar at all-time highs, you could snatch it up and become Amos' Next Door Neighbor! (Or Neighbour, if you prefer.)

Just picture Chongo swinging in the trees, taking potshots at that pot of Amos' with his tommygun...or "Shane" dropping by for a few weeks....

Much improved all right, Amos. Archie and Edith "Bunkah" wouldn't even recognize it now. ;-) I like the look of the place. You can tell right away that it's in a warmer climate...just the kind of climate I prefer, in fact.

The stone wall is a great touch.

Life itself...ah, there's the rub. Weak crutch, indeed, Rapaire, but transcending it requires the greatest determination and the most intensive physical therapy (in a manner of speaking).

In other news here is what our poor old 60's tract home used to look like -- a sort of Edith Bunker aspiration or something.

And here are some pictures after our recent spate of improvements --including the new low wall in front, a new roof, stucco, windows and driveway. Click on any image for a larger version.

We are satisfied.
