hydra

a little known fact about the life cycle of the Lernean Hydra. The juveniles are hatched from eggs, taking roughly 9 years to grow to maturity, and on hatching appear to be a slightly larger then normal snake. The age of a juvenile hydra is easily established as it gains 1 head per annual molt until the full adult (nine headed) form is attained.

I once hit a huge pothole and suffered axle bifucation. Her old man almost caught me too, and him with a shotgun and marriage license.

hah! obviously the skeleton is mis-classified. It is actually the skeleton of a juvenile HYDRA.

In other news, being of two minds is apparently not new:

"A remarkably well-preserved fossil of a two-headed reptile has been discovered in the Early Cretaceous Yixian rock formation in northeast China.

The tiny skeleton of a hatchling choristodere ? a group of extinct aquatic reptiles with long necks ? has two heads and two necks, fused at their base. The 120-million-year-old specimen is thought to be the oldest example of a developmental anomaly known as axial bifurcation.

While rare, this type of malformation has been seen before in living snakes, crocodiles, lizards and turtles ? some of which have survived for several years in captivity.

However, judging from the extreme juvenility of the fossilised skeleton ? its proportionally large head and eye orbits ? the tiny creature did not survive for long, say its finders Eric Buffetaut at National Centre for Scientific Research in Paris, France, and colleagues."

That explanation was under the photo, Amos. What you needed to do was explain what it means, not just repeat the text!

Those crampons looked like 10-pointers. The guys up on Mt. Hood should have had 12-pointers. It might have helped. (Two extras on the front for kicking into ice walls or kicking steps on hard icy slopes).

I am happy to report the universe is not going to implode thanks to the Casimir effect: (Click for image).

Explanation: This tiny ball provides evidence that the universe will expand forever. Measuring slightly over one tenth of a millimeter, the ball moves toward a smooth plate in response to energy fluctuations in the vacuum of empty space. The attraction is known as the Casimir Effect, named for its discoverer, who, 50 years ago, was trying to understand why fluids like mayonnaise move so slowly. Today, evidence is accumulating that most of the energy density in the universe is in an unknown form dubbed dark energy. The form and genesis of dark energy is almost completely unknown, but postulated as related to vacuum fluctuations similar to the Casimir Effect but generated somehow by space itself. This vast and mysterious dark energy appears to gravitationally repel all matter and hence will likely cause the universe to expand forever. Understanding vacuum fluctuations is on the forefront of research not only to better understand our universe but also for stopping micro-mechanical machine parts from sticking together.

Isn't "Crampon! Crampon" the rallying cry for the WIMPS (Women's International Menses and PMS Society)? Or am I thinking of something else? If not, I am sure I will be momentarily....(ducks and exits stage left).

Hell, I get a kick out of that question. I kinda doubt it -- reindeer, at least, have evolved specially formed feet for dealing with ice. Horses, now, that's a hard one. here should be a footnote about it.

Yeah, well, I got a traffic ticket for it. "Failure to use chains during icy conditions." Damn cops. Next thing you know they'll be after you for minor infractions, like moonshining and battery and public lewdness and illicit intentions and fighting and drunkeness.

And then they'll have to shut down the Legion Hovel and we'll be in the same dilemma as the teenage boy who finds himself sans condom when the "magic moment" arrives and his girlfriend ain't about to take chances!

Dunno what this world is coming to, and it the Christmas season, too.

Scored a 9.8 out of 10.0, didn't it? And as the song says,

"My spurs are rusted, my sword is bent,
My plume is soaked with rum
And the thistles, thorns and cockleburrs
Are thick on my well-bruised bum."

WHoa, did you see the mess Rap made when he was over at the Mudcat Tavern a little while ago? Ass over applecart THROUGH the door WITH the horse. . . he was moving around so I don't think he broke anything, but that dismount HAD to hurt!

HE speaks as straight as his rifles shot,
As straight as a thrusting blade,
Waiting the deed that shall trouble the truce
His savage guns have made.

"You have dared the wrath of a dozen states,"
Was the challenge that he heard;
"We can die but once!" said the grim old King
As he gripped his mountain sword.

"For I paid in blood for the town I took,
The blood of my brave men slain,--
And if you covet the town I took
You must buy it with blood again!"

Stern old King of the stark, black hills,
Where the lean, fierce eagles breed,
Your speech rings true as your good sword rings--
And you are a king indeed!

(Don Marquis)

Give 'em hell. That squid has been sitting in there so long, he's wrinkled, and half-turned into a lounge lizard. That Catahoula will teach him some get up and go!

I have a pair of possum hounds in the back yard (well, they're squirrel hounds this week, since that's what they caught on Thursday. And they're also snake hounds and lizard hounds and mourning dove hounds. . . when they're not being an Am Staff Terrier and a Catahoula). They're soft and sweet smelling today, after a lovely bath last night.

Can I bring 'em over to the tavern?

I had a young friend so fascinated with fans that one of his first Halloween costumes (*the* first he chose on his own) was to dress as a box fan.

In other news - the Tavern has opened for Christmas - but sneak in the back way - Cletus is trying to charge admission at the main door.

When my daughter was that age she was also fascinated by fans, though she preferred the types that are on stands or sit in the room and oscillate. Every time the breeze passed her face there would be a happy little "gasp!" at the puff of air.

She'd probably get Donovan, her son, to beat me up. If he could stop looking at the ceiling fans long enough. He's really into ceiling fans, and he's learned to make them go faster and stop and everything by using the remote. For two years old he's pretty bright. And tough.

It has to do with global warming, and it's starting in the east.

Well, I lobbed a stinkbomb last night and I see the thread is back at the top, but I'm tired of squabbling with folks, so I think I'll let that one lie.

I just took a bird feeder, a shepherd's crook garden thing and a bag of seed over to my neighbors across the street. He complained that I'm hogging all of the birds lately, so I'm leveling that landing strip, so to speak.

Good MORNING, Mom! Warm, humid, sunny day here in Texas! My family in Washington haven't been so lucky, with all of the rain and trees falling. I called to check on an old friend north and east of Seattle who said the worst they got was rain, but there are some graphic photos online about the storm damage. As for me down here, I'm going to give the dogs baths today, because it's supposed to be in the low 80s by afternoon.

Wierd winter.

Time to go to bed. I'm wasting time torquing up another Mudcatter by highlighting her idiotic remarks. Note to self to forward to that person: if you're going to post a link to a place, it helps to at least READ the information about the place. You have a lot less egg on your face later on.
