Now, ya see, these days we don't dig them postholes. Nossirree! We just does one of two things. The first is that we git Little Davey ta come round. We show him where we want the holes, and Little Davey punches one with his bare fist. We pay him fifty cents fer each hole, and they's allas deep enough cuz Little Davey's arms are six feet long. Don't hurt him none to do it, neither, cuz of his knuckles dragging on the ground all the time has built him up one BIG set of calluses. We call him "Little Davey" seeing as how he's only four feet xix inches tall.

And the second way is a bit more wasteful but a helluva a lot of fun. We jist scoops the dirt down to rock, pile some unwrapped dynamite on it, sandbag the dynamite real good, shove in a blasting cap and some fuse, light the fuse, and run like hell. Works great. One time Stinky got aholt of some stuff called "cratering charges" from the Army Surplus store in Dunn. Suckers were pretty heavy -- musta weighted fifty pounds or so each. Anyway, Stinky figgered that iffen they could blast holes in concrete like he'd heard they could they'd be good for makin' postholes. He sat up about six or eight of 'em in a row, right where he wanted the holes, stuck the caps and fuses in, and lit the fuses. Only what he didn't know was how powerful them Army explosives were. They blasted a line of holes better'n six foot deep in a line where the craters overlapped each other. Then the bottom fell out, cuz Stinky had blown them off over some kinda fault or somethin'. Anyway, everything started fallin' in, and right soon all that was left was a hole that looks like this. nowadays.

Been there, done that.

Building fences on the South Downs. 6" of topsoil, and solid chalk all the way down. Driving posts into that is fun, but putting the gate posts 4 foot in really good for the shoulders...

Now, coffee, a keyboard and that thread of LtS's is a bad combination...

Jist gittin' the postholes in is a right chore, Amos. This here country's got about three inches of dirt and a hunnert miles of rock and it don't take no time at all ta git to the rocks. Ol' Sol, him that usta break the horses out on the Rockin' Lazy J, he was one tough hombre and would jist ram them fenceposts inta the ground every thirteen feet or so. He made one straight fence line, too. But after Mary Mountain caved in on him he warn't in no shape ta do it anymore. Shucks, after that woman got aholt of him he was like a little baby. I remember one time up at the Legion hovel after he tuck up with that woman he tried ta punch his way outa a wet paper bag and couldn't do it! That ol' boy jist hung his head in shame and started walkin' west. Ended up in Boise, he did, elected to the State Legislature. Pitiful end fer a guy who used ta be a top hand, it was.

Dry fencing is not easy, either, in case anyone thinks Rapaire is some kind of slipshod lip-service ne'er-do-well. Ask any Texas cowhand. They know all about dry fencing.

Women aren't permitted to fence, GUEST, without wearing appropriate protective equipment. Neither are men, for that matter. I wear an FIE-certified three-weapon mask, an FIE-certified plastron, an FIE-certified three-weapon jacket, and (because I'm not fencing competitively) leather gauntlets. Because I'm not doing this competitively I don't wear the fencing trousers, shoes or socks, nor, because I fence "dry," do I worry about electrical wiring or wear lame.

I fence, but I don't expose vunerable parts of my body any more than I have to. In fact, my fencing jacket covers That Part. Getting stuck in the ol' goolies with an epee could Utterly Destroy my popularity. But it could be worse, I guess -- I could fence saber; that uses slashes and cuts. Maybe that's why all the saberists at the club are women.

That last post was me, without cookie.

While we're on a roll, there's always

Conger Cuddling

A form of bowling where the pins are human beings. A varying number of participants stand on upturned flower pots approximately 3 to 10 feet away from a dangling length of rope. Tied to the end of the rope should be a 5 foot conger eel, and the aim is to knock the humans off their perches by swinging the eel at them. Each player has a pre-arranged number of attempts and points are scored according to the number of people knocked off their pots. Once everyone has swung the teams change places. Occasionally a suitable conger eel can't be found: in these circumstances it's permissible to use a suitable alternative fish of a similar size.

Is that anything like One-legged Herring Duelling?

One-legged Herring Duelling

This requires two idiots, two herring, and stout washable rainwear. It should be played outdoors. Contestants stand on one leg facing each other, holding their right foot in their left hand for balance. In their right hand, they each hold a herring by one end. They hit each other about the body with the floppy ends of their herring for one minute; the winner is anybody who refuses to play, closely followed by the player whose herring is most severely damaged by the experience.

When you work in the public sector your spine is the first to go. If you work in it long enough they also take your balls, even if you're a woman. They can also take your ambition, intellect, youthful innocence, virtue, ethics, independence, morals, the smile on your lips, the song in your heart, your optimism, your...wait, no, sorry. I'm thinking of Congress.

You have to put a layer below the insulation, so it doesn't filter down into the living spaces, especially if it is fiberglass insulation, not fun to breathe.

And in other news, a clue to the evolutionary underpinnings of sexism, swords, and other febrile obsessions:

Emma Johnston of the University of New South Wales said the creature -- named Imogine lateotentare -- is one of the simplest organisms known, but its behavior is quite complex, the Sydney Morning Herald reported Friday.

Johnston and colleagues Ka-Man Lee and Michel Beal have kept the organism -- found in Sydney's Botany Bay -- in captivity in the laboratory for up to a fortnight, watching as its attacked prey.

The creatures have both male and female parts and engaged in a sexual practice somewhat like penis fencing.

To reproduce they try to stab each other with their genitals and the first to penetrate inserts sperm and then goes on to spar with another flatworm. The "loser" lays and broods the eggs.

The findings are published in the Journal of Natural History.

Says a lot, in neo-Darwinian terms. A confusion, perhaps, about the meaning of the word "win"?

My next door neighbor is putting on a new roof later this year. He's considering adding insulation, meaning they'll have to lay the proper foundation for the roof. Sounds rather contradictory, doesn't it?

well if your spine is nothing but a strand of gelatinized starch no wonder you have a poison-drooping tail. Nothing to support it! Probably why your skin has gone all scaly, too; It's like laying roofing tiles or shingles , without a proper foundation nothing is going to come out right.

Librarians work. I'm a library Director. I go to meetings, schmooze with politicians, surf the Internet, and do other disgusting things that allow me to avoid actual labor. And I'm not ashamed of it! No! There is no guilt attached to my job! None! Just because I get to do all these neat things and have all these wonderful perks doesn't mean that I've gone over to the Dark Side. Not at all. Except for the horns, the scales, the tail, the poison-dripping fangs, and the talons I'm the same sweet, lovable, guy I always have been.

Good morning, everyone! I hope that your day is pleasant and filled with love and sunshine and joy! Isn't it wonderful to be alive? To hear the butterflies singing and the birds flitting from flower to nectar-filled flower? Puppies and kittens are playing peacefully together chasing balls of yarn and soon they'll cuddle up in a big heap suitable for a calendar picture! The sky is the bluest blue ever and the peaks of the mountains are tickling the clouds' tummies while Mr. Sun beams smiling down, warming everything below. Tonight Ms. Moon will spread silver smiles over all the world and the stars will twinkle in the heavens while sleepyheads everywhere snuggle down in their big warm quilts, content and dreaming wonderful dreams before they awaken refreshed and full of energy for the new day. Tomorrow Mr. Sun will peek over the Bannock Range again and fill the Portneuf Valley with his golden sunshine and I will trudge off to meet with the Mayor, thinking of the oral surgery I have to consult with the oral surgeon about today.

Case Western Reserve University, only it's now a joint program in Library Management between the Weatherhead School of Business and the library school at Syracuse University.

In No. Indiana, I'd check out Dominican U.'s school in Chicago (well, for all practical purposes). Or the School of Library and Information Science at the University of Indiana (although I don't think much of the dean there). Or the University of Illinois at Chambana. Kent State University is another possibility, as is Wayne State and the U. of Michigan. Lots of good schools within a fairly easy drive, and if you want to look farther afield, the U. of Kentucky has one.

There are also "distance learning" grad courses, too. The U. of Illinois has one, as does the U. of Washington and Emporia State in Kansas.

These are what come immediately to mind.

Were I in the situation, I'd check Dominican first and the U. of Illinois next, then the U. of Michigan.

Just doesn't work when you have to ask. . .

Rap, what library school did you go to? A friend has written to ask me for a recommendation and his student is in northern Indiana. Seems to me you're from somewhere around there? I'll recommend U of North Texas, where many people in this region go (and they have a cooperative program with Texas Women's University in the same town). But these aren't exactly closeby for that student.

Hats off "S.R.S." It's B.S. too change the rules in the middle of the game.
"R". 10-12 hour a day, 5-6 days a week, leave little time for self-improvement let alone daily household chores, (That end up being weekly chores)(cooking meals & dishes), let alone the required 8-10 hours sleep required to feel capable (not good, just capable)leaves little time for checking mail, drinking coffee, eatting breakfast, getting showered and dressed and having another cup while rolling one for the road, so i can do it all over again. Just to Break even. Ya i know imformation, leads to knowledge, and knowledge is the key to power and power is the key to freedom. GOOD KARMA TO ALL! "OOMummm"
(Oh and did i mention the getting to and coming from work schedule)
Tis "Better to be a Late Bloomer, Than to have never Bloomed at all"
And also Know that when i get where i want to be. The Actioneer gets it all,for theres, no-one else. (Tell i get to back to where i came or the other side)(Hope there is no Purgatory). GET IT DONE!!

Here a riddle for all:

Where in the Bible is "BASEBALL" mentioned?
