Whoops! Mind slipping out of gear confuses two Teutons.

A Teuton was tootin' a flute,
And teaching two Teutons to toot.
Said the two to the tutor,
Is it harder to toot? Or,
To tutor two Teutons to toot?

Oh ^&%$! Some &%$#*$#^&# on one of the other threads is using bad language again and saying things like "(^*%^"! It's terrible. I am thinking of leaving if this forum doesn't get cleaned up soon.

Never say "impossible" when it comes to the movies. Amazing what they can do when they don't have actors or sets or props. . . I haven't read that particular book though, so perhaps it does defy computer graphics and I don't know about it.

Yes Amos I am refering to the Magister Ludi by Hermann Hesse ... I understood your quirkiness and was I was equally quirky in replying about Berolucci making the movie ... it is quite obvious it would be impossible to make a screen play on this book.

I was being quirky -- I suppose you are referring to the Magister Ludi game of all games, and no, they've never made a movie out of Mann's book. Sorry.

There was a movie made on it??

How could they fit that inot 2 or so hours ... unless of course it was made by Bernardo Bertoluuci.

Mind games, yes. If you want to look at it that way. What I mean is, I do not enjoy the traditional "games of chance" and do not play them for money.

ALl games, in my book -- some more inspiring than others. I expect we have different definitions. Any goal accompanied by rules, wins, loses and usually opponents or competitors qualifies. A well played begging game is fun for a short while. Pr9oblem is you get kinda stuck in to some of these games and they grow deadly serious. That doesn't change the rules, it just makes them harder to play.

Not true. You can work for money. You can beg. You can borrow. You can steal. You can even inherit.

I can't stomach playing games for money because:

1. I would expect to lose from the start.
2. I couldn't forgive myself for being so stupid if I did lose.
3. I'd be so nervous that it wouldn't be any fun, and I'd play badly.
4. Which means, I would almost surely lose.

Perhaps I was a gambler in a past life, lost everything, and that accounts for my utter disinclination toward it now.

Little Hawk:

I don't believe you. Playing games for money is the only way to get some.

I don't believe that I have ever played Crazy Eights OR Old Maid for money. I play it with small children who laugh and learn about taking their turns and being good sports whether they win or lose.

Now our version of Scrabble is a rather demented affair. It involves rude words, sly innuendo, and money included. I invented it for my children (and they love it!)

Actually, Amos, I am simply unwilling to play games for money. Always have been. So I will never experience that particular thrill, I guess.

No, I think card games are what you do when you've reached that final point of emptiness where there is nothing else left to do but blow your brains out.

This being a post of very significant number, I have to mention that Shatner still rules, by the way.

You've never won a high-stakes hand on a bluff, I reckon. It could be addictive. Fortunately my genes are stacked agin it, so it onlyhappened once.

While you're at it, teach Little Hawk something other that Crazy Eights and Old Maid.

If you read about Ms. Barrett you'll see that she has made a lifetime career of playing computer voices. I really enjoyed her as Troi's mother in Next Generation. She was really over the top in that role. . . and in many other positions, if I recall. :)

Another 10-spot for Rapaire, the Idaho Gambler, and te reckless bids keep coming. Who's bluffing? Who's got the high hand? Who has straight flush BS with royal tops? Who's just staring down the opposition, sitting on an explosive, ruinous "fold" and claiming four of a kind in the BS stakes?

You got to know when to copy,
When to act sloppy,
Know when to shovel crap,
An' when to bite your tongue
And you never count your postings
When your still composing BS,
There'll be lots of time for counting posts
When the BS is all done

I slid by the jello'y slated road of cherry infested tar, just to end up turning around in a lime pit of shat.......

That was in the Star Trek episode entitled "The Sporran Doesn't Tilt Here Anymore." In it, Scotty sang that great ballad:

Oh, the sporran doesn't tilt here anymore.
No, the sporran doesn't tilt here anymore.
Uhura didn't let it phaser
And Scotty just got grazed, sir...
And the sporran doesn't tilt here anymore. YEE-HA!!

I just remember the bit above, but someone out there probably knows all of it. It's supposed to be a wonderful old Scots ballad from the West of Scotland. I do remember Spock playing the bagpipes, Chekhov on the lute, and Kirk on mouth harp.

Good thing. I suspect her aim was deadly. I always wondered if Kirk and Uhura had something going on the side. If so, they were very discreet about it.

Scotty originally wore kilts, but stopped after Uhura said that she liked neither the gleam in his eye nor the tilt of his kilt. Then she set her phaser on "emasculate" and from then own Scotty paid attention to his engines.

Yes, we always had Spock for that, and Spock was a huge cultural icon back then, just huge. A lot of women found him sexy, because he was clearly "the unattainable". This made him super-desirable. Could they and only they break through his coldly logical reserve????? Shatner, on the other hand, was eminently obtainable, and made no bones about showing it at every possible opportunity. (That last remark was not a dig at De Forrest Kelly, but it could have been.) Only a woman who was totally desperate could fall for Kelly, in my opinion. Then there was Scotty, everyone's bad cliche of a Scot. Interesting bunch of stereotypes there. Uhura was the first black woman to hold a notable position of responsibility in a TV drama series. Another point in favor of Star Trek as an innovative show.

Yes, well, I suspected that, Amos. ;-) Who wouldn't envy the man for that? I would have loved to get the chance to be Jean-Luc's predecessor on the bridge of the Enterprise, get to fight Gorn lizard men, dropkick Klingons, kiss Romulan beauties, you BET! It was a job to die for! Shatner is one lucky son of a bitch, I'll tell you that, but you know he had to have a lot of confidence and initiative or he never would have got that far.

If I were not a gentleman, LH, in spite of my earlier firm remarks, I would ask you to expand on what we "all know" as regards Shatner's comedic values.

The real reason I get so snarky about Shatner is I envy him his public success. I would have loved to be Jean Luc Picard's predecessor on the bridge of the Enterprise. Wouldn't you have? Honestly? LOL!

You're breaking my heart, Jerry. ;-)

By the way, I've never forgiven you for the movie scene where you're baking cookies, and you keep picking your nose in between sticking the same finger in the cookies before putting them in the oven.

I would have picked Gordon Lightfoot, Amos, but I don't think he works nearly as well in the comedic sense as either Neil Young or William Shatner. Neil, because of his voice and general weirdness. Shatner, because...well, we all know, right?

You just don't happen to like Shatner, Amos, and that is all there is to it. Nothing more to it whatsoever. I like both Chongo and Shatner. I like all the characters I have fun with on this forum, which is why I bother to have fun with them.

I genuinely like Star Trek and all its weird history and offbeat character actors (of which I'd say De Forest Kelly "Bones" was definitely the oddest), and I genuinely like William Shatner and find him to be quite the entertainer in his own peculiar way.

I bought his book "Get A Life" just for a lark, and to my surprise found it to be a simply great read. There's more to Mr Shatner than just a toupee and a big gut.

You think I just pulled Shatner out of a hat one day and thought, "Hey, here's something I can pester the Mudcat Forum with..."? Well, it didn't happen that way, as I have explained in my previous post. I've been interested in him for a very long time.

If I had chosen Jerry Lewis to torture the forum with...THAT would have been capricious and meaningless. I don't give a damn about Jerry Lewis.

Little Hawk:

Well of course he means something.

The question is what.

Anyway, if he is important to you, go for it. It doesn't strike me as genuine. Now, Chongo, HE's genuine. Much realer than Shatner.
