The weather cleared quite nicely after you left, BWL. (nice meeting you and the missus, by the way!)

*chortle*

I'd say lately shambles is getting a 416 and 412. Wish he'd be 410

Yes, but _I_ went to SE Alaska and didn't get rained on during the second week! AND the skies cleared to a lovely blue AND the sun came out AND folks were even swimming off beaches and such. AND I have photos to prove it.

During the first week it rained pretty much all the time. While walking down Franklin Street in Juneau, mildew attempted to mug me but I was able to fend it off with a bottle of Clorox. At the ferry terminal in Sitka we were given life jackets when we went ashore, and the meeting was conducted in rubber life rafts. Ducks laughed at us, but the next week we laughed at them.

Does anyone know why a rather "friendly" labrador retriever has been hanging around my house? And there is a great crop of stinkhorn mushrooms in the backyard; I wish they were edible.

That's what you get, BWL, the ol' "grass is always cooler" syndrome. Except for me, that is. I went to New York City in late July and early August and after one really hot sticky day it cooled off nicely for the rest of the week. And we didn't get rained on at all (if you don't count the uppity Chinese fruit seller who did try to rain on our parade a bit).

This boast probably means we'll swim out of NYC next trip.

Everybody's coming home, Mom. (Mom? Did you know that Bee-Dubya was gone?)

Hi, Mom! I'm back! Indiana was hot. Missouri was even hotter. I thought the idea of going north in August was to get away from the nasty heat and humidity of Florida. Hah!

Amos, you're confusing my superhero powers and clothing with those of my secret identity as a mild-mannered library director for a great quasi-metropolitan library. By the way, the multicolored codpiece is the result of an unfortunate accident with a paint sprayer (which is different from a paint spayer, which is used to give a surprise to certain horses), which I am not at liberty to discuss. And you didn't mention to batwing chaps.

Geeze, Rap, you shouldna done that. Seeing you in a shirt, tie and jacket has destoyed my image of you leaping up on tables, slicing the air with your keen blade, in high leather boots and a multi-colored codpiece and buskin. Or is that jerkin? I always get them confused...

I must confess: I come from a real hotbed of "prono" material (and am well-versed in advanced applications of such).

Nor does it make you a musician of any other kind, for that matter; you gotta do that on yer own.

BDiBR, this IS a "prono site."

As for the book -- I own it. I also own the FM the US Army produced on improvised explosives, "The Poor Man's James Bond," "Instinct Shooting," "The Anarchist's Handbook," McGivern on plain and fancy pistol shooting, and others. Why not? Owning Krafft-Ebbing doesn't make me a sexual deviant and owning several books of music doesn't make me a world-renowned musician.

My brain spasm for the day:

Ran into this on another thread from Rapaire, and was wondering why you have books like that about.

According to Captain W. E. Fairbairn, in Get tought! How to win in hand-to-hand fighting as taught to the British Commandos and the U. S. Armed Forces (Paladin Press reprint, 1979; "an exact reproduction of the original" [1942]), page 99, figure 112, the heart lies 3 1/2 inches below the surface and a knife attack to it would result in instantaneous lossof consciousness and death would occur in 3 seconds.

Oooooo. . . I think I've got a case of whiplash, watching this stuff fly by. That long one was out of the blue (to be followed by the mismatched duo of Buddha and Starhawk. . . I won't even go there. . . ) You know how it is with compost--sometimes it gets too hot and you need to spread it around a little. We need some of the garden variety stuff to let that other batch cool off a little.

Toward that end, a bit of fluff: for some reason when I was searching for the image above this page turned up. Don't know why, but I figure someone might enjoy it.

This is the one for me:

Charge of the Goddess - Traditional by Doreen Valiente, as adapted by Starhawk:

Listen to the words of the Great Mother, Who of old was called Artemis, Astarte, Dione, Melusine, Aphrodite, Cerridwen, Diana, Arionrhod, Brigid, and by many other names:

Whenever you have need of anything, once a month, and better it be when the moon is full, you shall assemble in some secret place and adore the spirit of Me Who is Queen of all the Wise.

You shall be free from slavery, and as a sign that you be free you shall be naked in your rites.

Sing, feast, dance, make music and love, all in My Presence, for Mine is the ecstasy of the spirit and Mine also is joy on earth.

For My law is love is unto all beings. Mine is the secret that opens the door of youth, and Mine is the cup of wine of life that is the cauldron of Cerridwen, that is the holy grail of immortality.

I give the knowledge of the spirit eternal, and beyond death I give peace and freedom and reunion with those that have gone before.

Nor do I demand aught of sacrifice, for behold, I am the Mother of all things and My love is poured out upon the earth.

Hear the words of the Star Goddess, the dust of Whose feet are the hosts of Heaven, whose body encircles the universe:

I Who am the beauty of the green earth and the white moon among the stars and the mysteries of the waters,

I call upon your soul to arise and come unto me.

For I am the soul of nature that gives life to the universe.

From Me all things proceed and unto Me they must return.

Let My worship be in the heart that rejoices, for behold, all acts of love and pleasure are My rituals.

Let there be beauty and strength, power and compassion, honor and humility, mirth and reverence within you.

And you who seek to know Me, know that the seeking and yearning will avail you not, unless you know the Mystery: for if that which you seek, you find not within yourself, you will never find it without.

For behold, I have been with you from the beginning, and I am That which is attained at the end of desire.

OR this simpler one:

Entrusting in the Primal Vow of Buddha,

Calling out the Buddha-name,

I shall pass through the journey of life with strength and joy.

Revering the Light of Buddha,

Reflecting upon my imperfect self,

I shall proceed to live a life of gratitude.

Following the Teachings of Buddha,

Listening to the Right Path,

I shall share the True Dharma with all.

Rejoicing in the compassion of Buddha,

Respecting and aiding all sentient beings,

I shall work towards the welfare of society and the world.

I know one should not be disagreeable in Mom's parlor.

Instead one should offer constructive alternatives.

So, here's a prayer:

May all beings be filled with joy and peace.
May all beings everywhere,
The strong and the weak,
The great and the small,
The mean and the powerful,
The short and the long,
the subtle and the gross:
May all beings everywhere,
Seen and unseen,
Dwelling far off or nearby,
Being or waiting to become:
May all be filled with lasting joy.
Let no one deceive another,

Let no one anywhere despise another,
Let no one out of anger or resentment
Wish suffering on anyone at all.
Just as a mother with her own life
Protects her child, her only child, from harm,
So within yourself let grow
A boundless love for all creatures.

Let your love flow outward through the universe,
To its height, its depth, its broad extent,
A limitless love, without hatred or enmity.
Then as you stand or walk,
Sit or lie down,
As long as you are awake,
Strive for this with a one-pointed mind;
Your life will bring heaven to earth

I've always thought that this was a cool poem/prayer:

I bind unto myself today
The strong Name of the Trinity,
By invocation of the same
The Three in One and One in Three.

I bind this today to me forever
By power of faith, Christ's incarnation;
His baptism in Jordan river,
His death on Cross for my salvation;
His bursting from the spiced tomb,
His riding up the heavenly way,
His coming at the day of doom
I bind unto myself today.

I bind unto myself the power
Of the great love of cherubim;
The sweet 'Well done' in judgment hour,
The service of the seraphim,
Confessors' faith, Apostles' word,
The Patriarchs' prayers, the prophets' scrolls,
All good deeds done unto the Lord
And purity of virgin souls.

I bind unto myself today
The virtues of the star lit heaven,
The glorious sun's life giving ray,
The whiteness of the moon at even,
The flashing of the lightning free,
The whirling wind's tempestuous shocks,
The stable earth, the deep salt sea
Around the old eternal rocks.

I bind unto myself today
The power of God to hold and lead,
His eye to watch, His might to stay,
His ear to hearken to my need.
The wisdom of my God to teach,
His hand to guide, His shield to ward;
The word of God to give me speech,
His heavenly host to be my guard.

Against the demon snares of sin,
The vice that gives temptation force,
The natural lusts that war within,
The hostile men that mar my course;
Or few or many, far or nigh,
In every place and in all hours,
Against their fierce hostility
I bind to me these holy powers.

Against all Satan's spells and wiles,
Against false words of heresy,
Against the knowledge that defiles,
Against the heart's idolatry,
Against the wizard's evil craft,
Against the death wound and the burning,
The choking wave, the poisoned shaft,
Protect me, Christ, till Thy returning.

Christ be with me, Christ within me,
Christ behind me, Christ before me,
Christ beside me, Christ to win me,
Christ to comfort and restore me.
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

I bind unto myself the Name,
The strong Name of the Trinity,
By invocation of the same,
The Three in One and One in Three.
By Whom all nature hath creation,
Eternal Father, Spirit, Word:
Praise to the Lord of my salvation,
Salvation is of Christ the Lord.

I don't know if all of this is the type of BS RR had in mind when she upped the ante the other day, but I feel like I've shoveled more than my share of it this evening. Flounces into the room and throws her disheveled self down on a comfy couch in Mom's front room

Before the blankety-blank router decided to bump us off line and the IP stuff decided to act up and I had to test the wiring on all of this stuff AND reinstall the IP software (and as you can guess got bounced from Mudcat before I could say what I was going to say) I was going to say:

Geez, the simplest of sentences and I still can't type it correctly.

    "So does the U.S. Government."

Rapaire, your point is a stretch well taken, all things considered. Hows about we consider this a conversation that happened in loo of sometime better at the time?

I wonder what I was thinking? It doesn't make much sense (except the "loo" part). I'm sure it meant something back then. How fleeting these ideas.

Bleh. I'm going to bed. It has been one of those Internet (ahd hardware) Long Strange Trips and I arrived back where I started. Double bleh.
