No, no, Amos is NOT a wereporpoise or a wereporpoise or even a wereorca. He's a werehorse (equus wereii).

Newborn dolphins and killer whales do not sleep for a whole month after birth, new research has revealed, and neither do their mothers, who stay awake to keep a close eye on their offspring.

The feat of wakefulness is remarkable given that rats die if forcibly denied sleep. And in humans, as any new parent will tell you, sleep deprivation is an exquisite form of torture.

The surprising sleeping patterns of captive killer whales - Orcinus orca - and bottlenose dolphins - Tursiops truncates - in the early months of life were observed by a team led by Jerome Siegel of the University of California at Los Angeles, US.

Unlike all animals previously studied, which maximise rest and sleep after birth to optimise healthy growth and development, the cetaceans actively avoided shut-eye. "The idea that sleep is essential for development of the brain and body is certainly challenged," says Siegel.

Bold Rapaire, Good SRS, Dear Mario, Sweet Rumanci and Bright Rustic, you are all more than anyone could ask for as friends and thread-mates.

As for the brilliant BWL, his intuition bedazzles even the mystics. The truth is I was only a few miles from Kankakee, in the sleepy little farm-field town of Manteno. And in the edges of Menote is a 60 acre plot of grassy land which back int he 1930's was developed by the State into a huge, self sufficient mental institution, with lovely brick buildings and carefully tended rows of oak trees basking int he sleepy midwestern sunlight, far from the noiseo f the madding crowd, with everything modern psychiatric thinking (1930's sty;e) could offer the overburdened soul. A loony-bin with a campus bigger than Yale's, it had everything it needed to be self sufficient, a whole two story building in red brick just for the laundry driven by its own boiler room housed in a separate red brick building, another two-story red brick building for nothing but electro-convulsive therapy, and dozens more sprinkled about with little roads and sidewalks and shade trees carefully planned into place. I tell you it was the funny farm to end all funny farms, a Hoosier Cuckoo's Nest of the first order.

With the advent of placebos and strange-sounding psychoactive drugs, all this industrial plant for the management of social misfits became obsolete. Now, we just give them pills and Fox News and they act normal. It could be someone has moved the target, given the political atmosphere, but in any case the State closed the place down ten years back.

Some brilliant entrepreneur bought the whole campus for a dollar plus back taxes and is gradually renovating all these buildings and leasing them to companies as office space.

One of these is the home of Planet Undergound, where I conducted strange technical experiments all week, having to do NOT with brassieres but with the detection of electro-magnetic fields and the extrapolation of those detections into multi-dimensional perceptions of their sources. Similar to the Temple's research projects, but different, too.

Not wanting to attract any attention, I flew back to San Diego on coach, where I selected a seat on the aisle; the center seat was occupied by a woman who was large, large, and who naturally overflowed into half of my space. To avoid inappropriate cuddling, I tried to overflow into the aisle, where I was repeatedly and unmercifully rammed by high-speed passing flight attendants and clipped by passengers en-route to the loo. As the sun set in the West toward which we sped, I prayed for a full moon to work its magic on my form; if only I could become a horse, that would get me some space!! I could neigh and rampage and no-one would dare clip me or offer me stale graham crackers!

But alas, the moon did not rise that night, and I suffered in relative silence all the way to California, where I climbed into my own bed still possessed of my usual bipedal form, and slept the sleep of the throughly fed-up until morning.

Thank you all for taking care of Our Sainted Mother all these days, you did I wonderful job!

A

Sorry, but I ain't lying in no swamp with no leeches. Leave 'em to Humphrey Bogart. Frogs or toads (North American variety, not those monster cane toads they have down in Oz) are one thing. Leeches are another. You (or Amos) can come relax in my creek if you want. There are a few ducks back there, some turtles and varieties of fish, quite a few other birds, and some snakes. Mostly duck weed this time of year. But no leeches.

But on those days when Amos is mare himself, he's a pretty good hand. If there were only some way he colt get over this foal problem! But wither or not it's possible, it's dun and I won't put him down because of it. I daresay he's gelding back to his old self even as I write this.

I am going to take us all into the seminar of calm...
please unwrap anything that resembles a tight fit and join me...
We are now taking a journey into a frequented stomping ground of the infamous 'Amos, gettin' it till you forget it'swamp.
please remove clothing and pick a random swamp spot.
Lay back nekkid and start to be invigorated by the swamp bugs. Take in the leeches and feel their multitudide thirst upon your skin.
You are now getting calmer...
Lie still.
Soon you will be one with the night frogs.
You will accept them as a part of your calm and you will revel in the touch of their soft skinny toes and the warmth of their reddish slurp of reddish tounge.
Feel the feeling of frogs feeding and frolicing upon a frenzied body of calm.
You can be calm. it is all right before a you to do.

Exactly my point! It was only a suspicion, but that is actual photographic proof: Amos, our Amos, is a werehorse. He probably lives down in the werehorse district. I hate to be a neigh-sayer, but what the hay! The truth is out, and I see no reason that we should discriminate based upon Amos's werehood. Let us all cinch up our belts and let him know that, no matter what troubles this might stirrup, he'll always hoof us as his mane backers.

As she lay dying, my mother motioned me to her side and said, "My firstborn! My pride and joy! I want you to promise three things!"

"What's that, Mom?" I asked through my tears.

"First, stay way from wild women. Second, stay way from strong liquor. And (cough, cough) never, ever, live in Idaho. Promise me!" and she seized my hands very hard.

I gulped down my tears and said, "I promise, Mom."

She relaxed her grip and sank with a contented sigh into the pillows, then drifted into a calm sleep.

For many years I thought that keeping one out of three wasn't too bad.

It's far easier to figure out what to do with a drunken duckie than what to do with a drunken Clydesdale. And it's far less dangerous to those involved, particularly the next morning when the inevitable case of morning-after diarrhea sets in.

just blethering away here...it's funny what goes over well in performances sometimes. 'Back in the clydesdale" went over very well this weekend, I expected it to. but the other two "biggies" we performed this weekend were "what do you do with a drunken duckie" - which started with a single verse and just kept growing...and a stupid little song we made up about a dead frog. *THAT* song even ended up being sung in a round!

and it's an earworm.

Gee, Leo, I was invited to join the SCA this past weekend. The SCAers and I discussed it. We even decided on an identity for me. It would be fun to be

a leper! Yes! I could go to the market and get little bits of meat and let them get a bit whiff and sort of drop them behind me. Dress in a white birka-like thing, ring a bell and say "Unclean!" and eat out of a wooden bowl and drink from a wooden cup. And people would leave you alone! No work to do! No fighting, no hassles! Yup, I think I wanna be a leper in the SCA. Just sit around and rot.

There's also not an Amos, Illinois. Nor is there a Bruce, Maggie, Bunn, Suzie, or Leo. But there is a Michael, Illinois. It's about a hundred miles northwest of St. Louis, MO.

Oddly, I'll be in the St. Louis area later this summer, but I don't think a side trip to Michael is on my itinerary.

They're Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa!
link
Lyrics :

Remember when you ran away and I got on my knees and begged you not to
leave because I'd go berserk?? Well...
You left me anyhow and then the days got worse and worse and now you see
I've gone completely out of my mind.. And..
They're coming to take me away, ha-haaa!!
They're coming to take me away, ho-ho, hee-hee, ha-haaa
To the funny farm. Where life is beautiful all the time and I'll be
happy to see those nice young men in their clean white coats and they're
coming to take me away, ha-haaa!!!!!

You thought it was a joke and so you laughed, you laughed when I had said
that loosing you would make me flip my lid.. RIGHT???
I know you laughed, I heard you laugh, you laughed you laughed and
laughed and then you left, but now you know I'm utterly mad... And..

They're coming to take me away, ha-haaa,
They're coming to take me away, ho-ho, hee-hee, ha-haaa.
To the happy home. With trees and flowers and chirping birds and basket
weavers who sit and smile and twiddle their thumbs and toes and they're
coming to take me away, ha-haaa!!!

I cooked your food, I cleaned your house, and this is how you pay me back
for all my kind unselfish loving deeds.. Huh??
Well you just wait, they'll find you yet and when they do they'll put you
in the ASPCA, you mangy mutt!!! And...

They're coming to take me away, ha-haaa.
They're coming to take me away, ho-ho, hee-hee, ha-haaa.
To the funny farm, where life is beautiful all the time and I'll be happy
to see those nice young men in their clean white coats and they're coming
to take me away, ha-haaa!!!
To the happy home, with trees and flowers and chirping birds and basket
weavers who sit and smile and twiddle their thumbs and toes and they're
coming to take me away, ha-haa!!!
To the funny farm, where life is beautiful all the time... (fade out)

Hey, buddy!
Yes officer..
You a head?
No, but I'm catching up, ha ha ha....

But it's pretty unlikely Amos is going to Moab, Illinois. In fact, it's almost infinitely unlikely, what with there being no such place.

Now, there is an extremely slim chance that this seminar Amos is attending is of such a secretive nature that it can't be held at any pre-existing location, which would necessitate the hasty construction of a brand new town in the middle of a corn field. It's possible that this town might be christened "Moab", but it's much more likely that the seminar is being hosted by an alien race of hyper-intelligent slime-mold and that it is being held somewhere in the Large Magellanic cluster.

Amos had to go to Chicago for some sort of hush-hush meeting of something called "The Manhattan Project." Real burn-before-reading type of thing that Amos does. Nobody's quite sure what it is, but Amos is working with some Italian named "Fermy" and a Danish fella named "Bore" and a guy nicknamed "Teller," who I assume is one of those radio talk show hosts.

Hot diggety! Just what we need! Spin-coherent electrons in an ultrathin film.

I'd like some logically-coherent politicians in most any matrix. Cement comes to mind.

(Actually, the science news is pretty exciting. Any idea of how long before it's commercially viable?"

Post - Top - Home - Printer Friendly - Translate

Subject: RE: BS: The Mother of all BS threads
From: Amos

n research published in today's issue of the scientific journal Physical Review Letters, Scott Crooker and Darryl Smith describe their use of a scanning optical microscope to acquire two-dimensional images of spin-polarized electrons flowing in semiconductor crystals mounted on an optical cryostat while using a miniature "cryogenic vise" to apply gentle pressure. By squeezing the crystal in a controlled manner, and without applying magnetic fields, the researchers were able to watch the electron spins rotate (or precess) as they flow through the crystal.

According to Crooker, "electrons, in addition to their negative electronic charge, also possess a magnetic "spin". That is, each electron behaves like a little bar magnet, with north and south poles. Electron spins in semiconductors are typically manipulated by applying a magnetic field, but we've found we can do the same thing, in a controlled fashion, using the "vise". And, the resulting degree of spatial spin coherence is remarkably more robust compared to the spin precession induced by a magnetic field."

Also,

A team of chemists at Penn State has developed a new type of ultrathin film, which has unusual properties that could improve the fabrication of increasingly smaller and more intricate electronic and sensing devices. The material, a single layer made from spherical cages of carbon atoms, could enable more precise patterning of such devices with a wider range of molecular components than now is possible with conventional self-assembled monolayers. The research is published in the current issue of the Journal of the American Chemical Society.

I tell ya, these molecular engineers are the dawning of a whole new array of fine technological solutions (ultimately breeding their own problems). By the time Gluon is my age, his poop will be disassembled with the trash by molecular machines who will recycle the component molecules into containers for re-sale to manufacturers. Any Nigerian farmer who needs water will grab it from the wind, using energy grabbed from the sun. We just might survive a couple of these current crises if we keep this up!
