Heed ye the dire evils of strong drink, and the dreadful things that intemperance hath wrought? If so, list to the following verses, and sin no more!!! For I am the unconquerable muse, and these are my verses:

The Demon Drink

Oh, thou demon Drink, thou fell destroyer;
Thou curse of society, and its greatest annoyer.
What hast thou done to society, let me think?
I answer thou hast caused the most of ills, thou demon Drink.

Thou causeth the mother to neglect her child,
Also the father to act as he were wild,
So that he neglects his loving wife and family dear,
By spending his earnings foolishly on whisky, rum and beer.

And after spending his earnings foolishly he beats his wife-
The man that promised to protect her during life-
And so the man would if there was no drink in society,
For seldom a man beats his wife in a state of sobriety.

And if he does, perhaps he finds his wife fou',
Then that causes, no doubt, a great hullaballo;
When he finds his wife drunk he begins to frown,
And in a fury of passion he knocks her down.

And in that knock down she fractures her head,
And perhaps the poor wife she is killed dead,
Whereas, if there was no strong drink to be got,
To be killed wouldn't have been the poor wife's lot.

Then the unfortunate husband is arrested and cast into jail,
And sadly his fate he does bewail;
And he curses the hour that ever was born,
And paces his cell up and down very forlorn.

And when the day of his trial draws near,
No doubt for the murdering of his wife he drops a tear,
And he exclaims, "Oh, thou demon Drink, through thee I must die,"
And on the scaffold he warns the people from drink to fly,

Because whenever a father or a mother takes to drink,
Step by step on in crime they do sink,
Until their children loses all affection for them,
And in justice we cannot their children condemn.

The man that gets drunk is little else than a fool,
And is in the habit, no doubt, of advocating for Home Rule;
But the best Home Rule for him, as far as I can understand,
Is the abolition of strong drink from the land.

And the men that get drunk in general wants Home Rule;
But such men, I rather think, should keep their heads cool,
And try and learn more sense, I most earnestly do pray,
And help to get strong drink abolished without delay.

If drink was abolished how many peaceful homes would there be,
Just, for instance in the beautiful town of Dundee;
then this world would be heaven, whereas it's a hell,
An the people would have more peace in it to dwell

Alas! strong drink makes men and women fanatics,
And helps to fill our prisons and lunatics;
And if there was no strong drink such cases wouldn't be,
Which would be a very glad sight for all Christians to see.

O admit, a man may be a very good man,
But in my opinion he cannot be a true Christian
As long as he partakes of strong drink,
The more that he may differently think.

But no matter what he thinks, I say nay,
For by taking it he helps to lead his brother astray,
Whereas, if he didn't drink, he would help to reform society,
And we would soon do away with all inebriety.

Then, for the sake of society and the Church of God,
Let each one try to abolish it at home and abroad;
Then poverty and crime would decrease and be at a stand,
And Christ's Kingdom would soon be established throughout the land.

Therefore, brothers and sisters, pause and think,
And try to abolish the foul fiend, Drink.
Let such doctrine be taught in church and school,
That the abolition of strong drink is the only Home Rule.

Red Ribbon
by Julia A Moore

The Red Ribbon is all the go;
It's the temperance sign, you know;
It is seen wherever you go,
On men who dare do right.

CHORUS:

Dare to do right,
Dare to do right,
Let your motto ever be
Dare to do right.

It's no disgrace to wear that badge
Of red ribbon, dear youthful lad,
Your mother's heart it will make glad
To see you dare do right.

Young friend, don't fail to sign the pledge,
And don the badge of ribbon red,
And leave some ways you have led,
Always dare do right.

Friends that love you is glad to see
That you can let vile strong drink be;
Their hearts rejoice in highest glee
To see you dare do right.

Three cheers for all red ribbon men,
And also those that is their friend;
God will be with you to the end,
He's ever on the right.

You fool, I AM the Living Spirit OF William Topaz McGonagall! That is why I am the Unconquerable Muse. I was unconquerable in life, when the World knew me as McGonagall, and I am unconquerable in death.

My rhymes are like an eternal Great Code of western civilization. They are all one really needs to know about art. I intend to post one of them here every now and then when I see you people straying from the mark and falling into sin. My words will bring you back into the fold as faithfull sheep and true servants of Christ...or they will caste you out into uttermost perdition! The choice is up to you. Listen and be saved! Or scoff...and meet your dreadful doom.

By the bye, that Julia Moore poem is excellent. I have met the shade of Julia Moore in the afterlife. She is indeed the Sweet Singer of America, resting now joyfully in the bosom of the Lord, and all who read her inspired words are lifted up thereby even, yea, to the Angelic realms. So sayeth The Unconquerable Muse!

Plagiars warts appear on the fingers of those who play with other peoples' material without bothering to learn their names first. A rare aberration, and a little known disease.

I'll have to see if there's a McGonagall poem that deals with the issue of plagiarism. If I can find one, I'll post it here. If not, I'll post something else. Presently. Please don't get too impatient while you're waiting for me to do so. If you find yourself drumming your fingers irritably and chewing on your fingernails, try some deep breathing to center yourselves, and remember that "all things come to those who wait". (A blatant misconception! But still, it's a popular proverb.)

Good morning, MOM! I hope you had a wonderful Mother's Day. The sun is shining here, and the lilacs are at their peak.

This week I will be visiting about five thousand elementary students in their individual classrooms and singing them a song to inspire them to read during the summer. It is a little ditty I worked up using the tune of one of Paganini's guitar impromptus. Quite lovely and catchy, the tune is, so I hope it works to get the kids to read.

I look forward to seeing you soon, Amos!

Ah! Eiseley emerges from the stacks to say hello! Will you be going to San Diego or is Amos travelling up there? I hope your tune and lyrics become an earworm for all of those children to keep them reading all summer!

MOM is into graphic novels, she found a set of Anime Trigun books and is reading them back to front voraciously (that's because she's starting on the US front that is the Japanese back and reading in that direction. They make more sense the other way, but she thinks this is a William Burroughs approach to the stories).

Whole busloads, truckloads, railway cars full of Amos' relatives, all heading for the Yellowstone Area. I've alerted the state police of Utah, Oregon, Nevada, Washington, Montana and Wyoming as well as the RCMP and the Idaho State Police. A dab of Vick's Vapo-Rub under the nose or smoking a bad cigar helps with odors such as Shame's. Those are old tricks of cops and firefighters who have to deal with long-dead and decaying bodies, such as Shame has.

By the way, LH, McGOnagle has nothing on this guy:

I had a friend, upon a time, and a mighty friend was he.
His tongue went loop-de-loop-de-loop, and his blade went "Snicker! Snee!".
His fingers typed words of delight
Dancing like light gone mad,
But he disappeared quite late, one night,
And the story turned out bad.

It seems his door was knocked upon,
When most folks were in bed,
By two large gents in wrinkled suits
And large, and wrinkled, heads.
They said he had been singled out,
That someone Big was pissed,
Berated him as a useless lout,
And a goddamned plagiarist.

They listed tomes and poems and works
He'd borrowed for a while,
And touted up and frilled out
In inimitable style.
The said he'd never paid a dime
To those whose works he'd borrow,
And all of this was coming back,
To visit him with sorrow.

They told him he was going away,
Into the darkling deeps
Where bad men worry through the day,
And fret too much to sleep.
Where hard men break, and life is hard,
And you scramble for what you get,
And there's no such thing as e-mail,
OR a high-speed Internet.

My friend, he blanched, he paled, he flinched,
He knew that he'd done wrong,
He knew that even then his screen
Held a half-baked stolen song.
He realized then -- too late, too late --
He should have listened, way back when,
To his dear Mom; too late, too late,
He was heard from ne'er again.

And so I come to this Cafe,
To write, and to forget,
But something still recalls to me
This friend I think on yet.
I never learned if he had ever
re-crossed that chilling schism
That split him from the world he loved,
On account of plagiarism.

So good folks all, pray heed this call,
Think of this man, cast doon,
And make your good works all your own,
From your own hand, alone.
Steal not the works of other men,
Or lines of other poets;
For if you do, they'll come for you,
And everyone will know it.

That's darned good stuff, Amos, but it doesn't scan nearly as poorly as McGonagall's writing nor does it employ such tortured rhymes nor does it desperately plug in a very weak and unfitting word at the end of a verse or line just to ensure that there WILL BE a rhyme.

As such, it's not really as memorable as McGonagall's work. This is probably why the name of William McGonagall lives on whilst that of Seamus...what was his name?....has vanished into obscurity.

He just didn't write badly enough!

I have tried to write as badly as McGonagall, yet sustain the same levels of dramatic tension as he.

I couldn't do it. I suspect you can't either. Probably no one now living can. Julia Moore, mind you, could. But she's dead now. Alas! The truly great appear to have all passed on.

Well, except for Shatner, that is. I thank God every day when I wake up and realize that He is still among us, inspiring us to go boldly where none have gone before, seek out strange new habits, and generally stretch the bounds of tolerance and decency in whatever small and humble way we can. ;-)

Well, if you wondered why Eiseley wished me "Good luck" today it's because I had a hearing. In Boise, midst the broke-dick mamaluccas (as Spaw and Bee Dubya would say).

I came out of it okay and I am now home and not in jail (or gaol, as you prefer).

It's not possible for me to discuss the matter of the hearing, but it has to do with SEAL Team Six and my part in taking out Osama Bin Laden last year. No, there was no wrong-doing on my part. I was actually a witness, sworn in and everything.

And from past experience I have learned that when you are sworn in, sworn to tell the truth and all that, it expires when you leave the stand. So I can again tell ALL the Truth and sometimes more Truth than you can handle. I do NOT stop telling the Truth, for I was sworn to tell it and I am an Oat Keeper.

I love my tarantulas and snakes, no worry for their welfare, though those in the back yard run the risk of dog-mayhem. They're really quite interesting; the tarantula holes in the back have shell fragments around them because they seem to enjoy escargot. The native snails don't know to avoid those intriguing holes. The spiders drop the shells outside after the meal.
