On the other hand, Bee-dubya-ell, it might have been an ad for cut bags to put your plastic dies in. Cut bags are what I sometimes seem to get at the supermarket, then everything spills out.

Must be better than a cut snake though - I hear they are pretty mad!

Heloo - anyone there? I guess some people might be madder than a cut snake if I sneaked in and took 11,100...

Gadarene, is it? You oatmeal mongering oaf! We have been assaulting the walls to his castle ceaselessly for three days. We are exhausted. You lucky few have no idea. So let's not go in for snide remarks!

Jenny, that was, um, quite dramatic, yes.....

Rapaire, happy Birthday.

SRS, any snow yet out there?

Rustic Rebel, where are you when we need you?

And Jenny scores! We like to spread the wealth (especially when it isn't a poacher)

No snow here, this is Tejas, just a little chilly. Now my friend Tom in NYC is up to his kneecaps and then some, it sounds like. He leads walking tours in the city--I wonder if he has snowshoes?

The Times showed pictures of two folks slogging down Fifth Avenue in snowshoes, and one peppy Oriental girl sliding across E. 57th street on cross-country skis.

Makes me proud to be a San Diegan -- proud,. I tell ya!!! It is balmy here today with light blue skies and gentle breezes in the 60's.

I spent all weekend overhauling the waterfall and it came out twice as nice as before. A little cleanup and we'll do official pictures.
I ache like a 65-year-old waterfront stevedore.

Seems like a nice day to drive down to Boston from Maine and admire all the snow that's buried their streets. Well, we do have an appointment to have several antique musical instruments checked out by Jim Bollman of the Music Emporium. I'll bring a copy of snow shovels and some snacks just in case. Maybe I'll even recharge the cellphone!

We got about 4 inches of nice fluffy dry snow where I live in Maine.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Ah! It's nice to see a few others here to keep Mother from falling off the bottom, and nice to see no-one's too mad at me.

Much as I am tempted, I think I'll let someone else have 11111. Time to go and talk to my pillow...

jenny, jenny.jenny - you would let a little thing like sleep deprivation prevent you from doing your duty to MOAB? Good thing the holdiay of the month is St. Valentine's not Mother's Day!!!!!

The premiere holdiday is February is the celebration of the birth of Thomas Alva Edison. Without Tommy (as his friends called him) we would all be listening to CDs by rushlight. There would be no direct current flowing into our homes from the electrical plants conventiently located only a mile or less away, and we wouldn't be watching porno flicks while dictating.

Yes, Big Tom's birthday is far more important than those of Lincoln and Washington and to the truly religious it even exceeds the anniversary of the first apparition at Lourdes.

To the cognoscentii, however, the date of February 11 is famous not because of Lourdes, not because it was Washington's original birthday, not because it was the eve Lincoln's birthday, and not because it's the natal day of the Big TA -- but because on that date an event happened that shook the universes to their roots. Yes, as you may have guessed, a shy, modest, unassuming child was born in the Great American Middle West, the firstborn of two humble parents, who was wrapped in swaddling clothes and laid in a manger while flights of angels sang my praises to shepherds who were tending their flocks in the nearby hills.

And when I was twelve I was lost in church, too. Or at least my mother said I was lost. I don't think you can be lost when you're tied up, gagged, stuffed into a sack, and left behind the church furnace.

Did I ever mention (this is truth!) that my mother dropped me on my head when I was about 18 months old? I still have the scar to prove it, too.

Okkaaaaaaaaaaayy...true story: My grandmother went to an early Mass and took me (aged about 4_ along. Being a quiet, serious, religious child, I stood in solemn awe of the priest. Come communion time, my grandma got up to go, and I promptly sat down on the kneeler, faced the bench of the pew, and proceeded to play "Mass."

Since she'd left me in the pew to mark the spot, my head was no longer available to her eagle eye.... She was afraid I'd wandered away, but after walking to the back of the church she turned around and spotted me sitting on the kneeler, playing priest.

I don't remember any untoward repercussions from this, but then the pain may have caused amnesia.

I spent my entire childhood blissfully free of church services. Now I will talk enthusiastically about God, the afterlife, etc. with anyone who is willing or interested. The moral: DON'T bring your kids up to be atheists! It may not turn out like you thought it would.

Then there wass the time a friend and I spent and hour and a half after school looking down a storm drain ("sewer"). Finally my grandmother called the convent to see if they knew where I was -- one of the nuns came over and asked me if I was me, I said yes, and she took both of us over and gave us a cookie while they called the responsible parties to come collect us.

Just an early example of my life-long interest in sewers.

And -- yes -- Giok DID land decimal 11111, which would be the interpreted as 16+8+4+2+1 if the same digits were writing in binary (decimal 31). Or, in hex, 128+64+32+16+1 or decimal 241.    See?

If you wanted to go the other way around and represent 11111, the real number, into binary you would write the binary figure 10101101100111 representing:

1 x 1 (2^0)
+
1x2 (2^1)
+
1x4 (2^2)
+
0x8 (2^3)
+
0x16 (2^4)
+
1x32 (2^5)
+
1x64 (2^6)
+
0x128 (2^7)
+
1x256 (2^8)
+
1x512 (2^9)
+
0 x 1024 (2^10)
+
1+ x 2048 (2^11)
+
0 x 4096 (2^12)
+
1 x      8192 (2^13)

which equals 8192 + 2048 + 512 + 256 + 64 + 32 + 4 + 2 + 1

or 11111 in decimal notation.

In hex, the real number 11111 would be written 2B67. But everybody knows hex people are weird.

Yes, hex people are weird. Since the decimal system is based on the fact that most of us have ten fingers and ten toes, it follows that hex people must have 12 fingers and twelve toes, which probably means that a hex person can play guitar chords you and I can only dream about. On the other hand, a hex person has a really hard time finding a decent-fitting pair of work gloves.

Butch Thompson (of the Butch Thompson Trio on the early Prairie Home Companion show) "invented" a seven-finger glove into which a five-fingered pianist inserted his or her hand and gained the added reach of two prosthetic fingers beyond the pinky.

There's more than one way to accomplish the reach (at least) of Rachmaninoff.

BWL:

I believe you are thinking of the duodecimal system, hardly ever heard of. Hex___ usualy refers to six, as in a hexagon. Thus, hexadecimal numeration is a base 16 counting system.
The numbers go 1...9,A,B,C,D,E,F,10..19,1A,1B,1C,1D,1E,1F,20....29, 2A, 2B, 2C, and so on.

Ihave 3.35 eyeballs but 0 children, excluding those I may have left behind me in my wild and rowdy days. Back in those days I was only interested in the pleasures of the flesh, the table, and the tankard. I lived a life of sin and decadence, drinking and wenching until the very early hours and then staggering home where my sainted mother was praying for my conversion to the paths of righteousness and religion. Oh, yes, she abjured me to give up my pursuit of pleasure! She prayed for and over me day after day! She offered up novenas to Sts. Monica and Mary Magdalene! She even went to far as to hide my clothes, thinking that this would stop my wayward ways, but it did not. And now, when I think back upon those times I feel shame and repentance. For they lasted too long, far, far too long. When I should have been a responsible citizen and shouldering the duties of a Man, I was making love to a bottle! And I slipped further and further down the Primrose Path To Perdition. Finally though the efforts of my Mother reached fruition and I was gathered into The Fold, finally toilet trained and weaned, even walking unassisted. And yet I look back upon those days with nostalgia (and I don't mean Nostalgia Smythe, the girl next door, for you have a filthy mind and she entered the nunhood at the age of eight anyway) when hordes of women cooed over me and fed me and catered to my every need.

Sigh....

Maybe there's some hex person sticking pins into the cranium of a BWL voodoo doll and going "You wanna be witty? Well, I'll fix your little red wagon! Every time you open your mouth to utter a witticism I'll make sure you put your foot in it! (Insert sound of maniacal cackling laughter.)"

The moon doesn't actually exist. What it is is a closely-knit aggregation of gravel, water, dirt, and dust that is held together by electrostasis. The so-called "Moon landings" were actually done on the largest of these pieces.

The actual true knowledge of what the Moon is -- which I have just shared with you at the risk of my life -- is a closely held secret of the Skull-and-Bones Club, the International Order of Odd Fellows, and the Little Sisters of the Downtrodden.
