I don't think it's a hunger for closure, to which you refer. More like a yearning to openure.

I saw a newspaper article just today that says Winona Ryder has been "seen around" with William Shatner.

Oh, for heaven's sake! ;-)

Look, that doesn't worry me. THIS is what worries me...

She was with...with a puppet?????????

Doesn't seem like much to worry about, LH--looks like recorded fact!!!

Shocking, isn't it?

What has that little half-pint squirt got that I don't have? I find his acting technique, for example, to be quite wooden. I should think Winona would aim a bit higher than that.

If she aimed a bit higher she'd be performing an unusual act indeed. But I think in some respects what he has thought you don't have lies in his nature, of being perpetually wooden.

Yes, Winona was supposed to be shacked up in a "love nest" with Bill Shatner and Osama Bin Laden. And since I read it in a newspaper at the grocery store I know it must be true.

This other thing was just a momentary romance, just a splinter of time.

Well, I don't expect Winona to remain totally chaste on my account. Hardly. Still, I am a bit miffed about the puppet. Johnny Depp? I have no problem there. Totally understandable. If I was female I would yield to his charms within half a second or less... ;-)

But that puppet! Geez...

Are you starting rumers? Is her next encounter going to be with a potter, our John Hardly?

"Is that a chard in your pocket or are you glad to see me?"

We shall see. I sent him a PM asking him to report in. Perhaps he can fill us in on the juicy details (and be sure to make LH as jealous as possible!)

She's found someone who can REALLY pull her strings. But technically I don't think he's a puppet or even a marionette, but a dummy.

Is this female Winona Ryder of good protein and DNA?

Reportedly, she is; but if you intend to eat her, you will have to go to the back of the line, fellas.

It was only those twelve times. And after that one night, the affair was all over. She kept calling. I kept telling her that I didn't have time. I had pots to make and art fairs to do.

syntax, syntax, syntax. . .

chard

shard

You can tell who is a gardener around here. I doubt John Hardly could have impressed Winona with a chard in his pocket. Must have been a shard if she kept coming back for more. . .

We worked busily all morning and then took a leisurely drive up the coast road, passing wide beaches littered with indolent tanners and perky surfers, over-cute shopping streets, little towns wiht mor epeople than they really need, and finally ended up at a commercial warehouse specializing in imported furnitute from Injuh, where we bought a patio bench.

It has been a lovely day.

I kind of wish work did not loom on Monday as I so enjoy just doing what I feel like doing. I feel I am fully qualified as a Retired SPecialist and should be promoted to that status. But nooooo.

Sigh.

Ah. I see.

We went to breakfast (after church, of course -- all good Idahoers go to church on Easter, if for no other reason than to see the rabbit sacrificed to Dups, the God of Potatoes) and then back home for a short nap. Up around noon for some salmon strata for brunch and then off for a quasi-brisk walk on the golf course. Back home for another nap, and now the laundry is started and I'll start dinner anon.

In other news a tagged Great White released from the San Francisco aquarium six weeks ago has already swum over 2600 miles to the south end of Mexico.

Breakfast? Granted, the rodeo ended last night and there WERE a lot of folks in cowboy clothes eating before they hit the road for the home ranch. Some of 'em might be drugstore cowboys, I guess, but most of 'em seemed to be at least fairly close to the real thing. Unlike a certain "rancher" in Crawford, Texas some of these folks know which end of the horse neighs and don't have to have "This end to the front" engraved on the saddle horn.

Oh, Rapaire. You don't know your dingus from a pole in the ground. THIS is what you are talking about:

"Since 966 A.D., Dyngus Day has been associated with the baptism of Prince Mieszko I. Tradition states that Prince Mieszko I along with his court were baptized on Easter Monday. Thus, Dyngus Day and its rites of sprinkling with water have become a folk celebration in thanksgiving for the fact that the first king of Poland was baptized into Christianity, bringing Catholicism to Poland. In more modern times, the tradition continued when farm boys in Poland wanted to attract notice from the girls of their choice. It was custom to throw water and hit the girls on their legs with twigs or pussywillows. Cologne was used instead of water by the more gallant lads. The ladies would reciprocate by throwing dishes & crockery and Tuesday was their day of revenge, imitating the same tactics.

WHAT DOES THE WORD DYNGUS MEAN?

According to the Encyclopedia Staropolska written in the 19th century by A. Gloger, the word can be traced back to a medieval form of the word "Dingnus," which means "worthy, proper, or suitable." Gloger cites a used of the word, namely "ranson during a war to protect against pillage," as well as a German usage of "Dingen," which means "to come to an agreement, evaluate or buy back." "

So-- let's see -- hit the girls with pussy willows and get hit with flying platters and cups. What fun. THose 10th century POles really knew how to party down!

:D

For giving is good
And taking is bad,
So I gave up eight hundred
For I'm not a cad.

SHORT LIGHT. The world*s shortest single photon has been produced
by physicists at Oxford University. Light can be thought of as a
series of waves or, in the dualistic view of reality prescribed by
quantum science, as a collection of quanta, particle-like parcels of
light energy referred to as photons. At any place along a light
beam there may be many photons present or in special cases just
one. Creating single photons is not easy to do. It is possible to
make photons in pairs by sending laser light through special
crystals. Even a pure-color laser beam will consist of many
photons; but occasionally one of these photons will be *down
converted,* that is, will turn into two photons each with half the
energy of the original photon.

When a pair has been created, the
detection of one of these half-energy photons heralds the presence
of its twin. Furthermore, these photons are entangled, meaning that
the properties of one photon are inextricably linked to those of its
partner and detecting one can ruin the quantum state of the other.
By minimizing these quantum correlations, the researchers obtained
heralded photons with exceptionally high quality and short
duration.

In the Oxford experiment the pairs of photons made had a central
wavelength of about 830 nm, at the border between visible and
near-infrared light. Each of these photons was (in units of time)
about 65 femtoseconds (65 x 10^-15 sec) long. In units of space,
they were about 20 microns long.

The shortest previously produced
single photon was about 1picosecond (10^-12 sec) long. Even shorter
pulses of light-stretching only hundreds of attoseconds-have been
made, but these pulses consist of many photons. One of the Oxford
researchers, Peter Mosley (p.mosely1@physics.ox.ac.uk,
44-01865-282640), says that this new experiment represents the first
time that textbook photons-identical, localized wavepackets
containing a single quantum of energy-have been produced in a lab.
