Yeah, what Rap said... in spades... every time a cloud comes over. It's truly disheartening.

Well, no "maybe" about it, it's still effing hot here. This weekend is up to 106o each day. It's the end of August, but it has been doing this so long, surely change is coming? MOM, send a nasty letter to the weather folks, see if they'll change the weather. Talk to gnu about what to say. Thanks.

ANd we live a life of ease
Every one of us has all we need
Sea of green and sky of blue
In our Yellow Submarine.
We all live in a Yellow Submarine.

Betcha nobody but me, not even Amos, knows correct term for the offspring of mermaids and mermen...OR what the holes in the hood of a Buick are called (besides rust).

Thanks so much for sharing, Rapparee. ANd you are right, Idon't know what the spawn of mermen and mermaids are called. THe holes in a Buick are called "holes", or ports.

Mom, ya woulda been proud of me for the surprise party we threw for BBW. She was expecting a quiet dinner with friends out in Valley Center, and who showed up but her Mom from Arizona. Then, her sister from Denver walked in, completely unexpected. Then guests start rolling in and the wine and beer are flowing and her best childhood friend shows up from Pennsylvania. The look on BBW's face was worth the whole deal, I tell ya. The party ran until late and we got some good blues laid down with buddies. It was a fine, fine evening.

SHe got some good presents, too.

A

In 1608, English navigator, Henry Hudson described something two of his crewmen saw in his journal. He wrote this of their account. "From the naval upward, her back and breasts were like a woman's . . . her body as big as one of us; her skin very white and long hair hanging down behind, of the color black; in her going down they saw her tail, which was the tail of a porpoise, and speckled like a mackerel."

In 1403 in Edam, Holland a few women claimed to have rescued a mermaid and allowed her to live amongst them. In 1635, minister John Swain wrote this of the event. "She suffered herself to be clothed and fed . . . she learned to spin and perform other petty offices of women . . . she would kneel down with her mistress before the crucifix, she never spake, but lived dumb and continued alive (as some say) fifteen years.

On January 4, 1493, Christopher Columbus wrote this in his journal about mermaids. " They were not as beautiful as they are painted, although to some extent they have a human appearance in the face . . . " Columbus claimed to have seen mermaids off of the coast of Haiti and off of the coast of Guinea, Africa.

Alexander Carmichael reported in 1900 that he had met people who had seen and touched a mermaid. He wrote this of their account. "The upper part of the creature was about the size of a well-fed child of three or four . . . with an abnormally developed breast. The hair was long, dark and glossy, while the skin was soft and tender. The lower part of the body was like a salmon, but without scales."

Although the ancient Tritons were said to be the offspring of mermaids, I don't think the general case has been labeled "a Triton". It could be. Since Rapparree is not sharing, he wickedly keeps us in a condition of vulnerable mystery with his puzzle. What a cruel man he is!! For fie.

I can tell you what they call the child of one mermaid: The Keeper of the Eddystone Light (assuming the son follows in his father's footsteps). Love that song! :)

"...she would kneel down with her mistress before the crucifix..."

I would guess the crucial fix was laudanum and hash.

Whaddid she do, flop over to the crucifix?

Coincidentally, I just read about Dr. Stephen Maturin's encounter with a mermaid. Actually, the crew raced down to the orlop to urge him to come on deck and see the mermaid. This is similar to what he described as their "mermaid"

Ha! I knew it!

The holes in the Buick are, according to the company itself, called "Cruise-A-Line Ventiports."

The mer-offspring are called marmachler (see Rappoport, "Superstitions of Sailors", 1926).

Marmachler sounds like the equivalent of "sea mackerel" to me. Mackerel of the sea, tuna of the sea, all the same, eh?

Praxeology is the conceptual theory of the science of human action, that is non-instinctive action. It identifies one axiom out of which all subsequent concepts are derived: Human action chooses certain ends and, after consciously comparing the different means available, chooses out of those available means in order to attain these ends.

Praxeology examines the objectives aimed at and the means employed in order to attain these objectives. It explains the causes and effects of human action. It does not explain the thought process that leads to the decision of pursuing a certain aim (psychology). Nor does it question the morality of the actor's ends (ethics). It merely examines whether the means employed are fit to attain the end sought.

Every human action is an act of exchange. At any given point in time, the actor trades one state of affairs for a different one. This is the driving force of all human action.

The axiom that human action aims at objectives and is performed in order to attain these is irrefutable. If one were to set out to refute its correctness he himself would be aiming at an objective and choose actions that he sees fit to attain this objective.

Amos, I give you the citation and everything and you STILL complain! Do you think I made this up? That I am plagiarizing? That my scholarship (or that of Angelo Rappoport) is faulty? I cited my source, YOU go look it up. The onus is on you, not me. I am a scholar, passing on knowledge, because like Chaucer's Clerk, "gladly would he [I] teach, and gladly learn."

Well, at least the book and author actually exist. Here chez Mom, ya never know.

I do not doubt you find the remark you cite, Rapp. I am skeptical of its actual provenance, though.

It is too easy, for one thing. For another, there is not another use of the word anywhere in the far compass of Google at all. It's rare to come up with an actual word that brings up NO citations in the language in which it is said to exist.

And only one, in any other language, which was just a coincidence of two words that made the same series of letters in a German name. So go figger.

I made a web page and a Google site and a Google Docs collection and an FB page and a bio and an "About this Book" blurb and a twitter account. By'n'by I will figger out what to do with it all!!

Stochastic (from the Greek for aim or guess) refers to systems whose behaviour is intrinsically non-deterministic. A stochastic process is one whose behavior is non-deterministic, in that a system's subsequent state is determined both by the process's predictable actions and by a random element.

However, according to M. Kac[1] and E. Nelson,[2] any kind of time development (be it deterministic or essentially probabilistic) which is analyzable in terms of probability deserves the name of stochastic process.

I hate those guys. Don't you?

Why DOESN'T gnu come to Getaway? Is he banned from the US as an Undesirable Alien, and if so, from whence did he come to Earth? Is it for fear that a bodhran player might be lynched with the banjo players? -- if so, I can assure him that different trees are always used for health reasons. AND he might have a good time, escaping for a few days from the cruel snow and biting winds that plague Eastern Canada the year around.

Rap... no, can't make the Getaway so I shall assume the cheque (not a check) will soon be safely in the hands of the US Mail and then into The Queen's Mail, or Canada Pist as some call it, soon.

As for Hran, I wish I could still play. I not only played Hran... I played damn near everything with my ciapan... aluminum beer can, my personal fav, was always a hit with the crowd. Beer bottles also. Cardboard box too, but only with a good box. Telephone books were a definite SMALL crowd pleaser but I was usually at someone's house for that one. An empty 4 litre water jug or an empty plastic gas can has a unique tone. I used to play with whatever I could get my hands on. Seriously, I'd just beat away.

WHen Mom would send us out to play.
In times now past and far away
We'd climb the rocks, run over hills
And seek a thousand childish thrills
And when, in the evening of the day
We'd call farewell, and homeward stray
Knowing there's be a dinner set
Hands to be washed, food to be et,
And through the rocks and winding hills
We never dreamed of costs or bills,
And if our bluejeans came home frayed
'T was never up to us to pay.

But now the game is deeply changed
We gallop past a mountain range
Fly out to Paris on a lark,
And dance Montmartre 'til after dark.
Our plays are larger, rich with feeling
And woes to set the plain heart reeling.
But Mom's not home to fill our plates
And we're more mindful of our weights.
And when our adult play is through
The burden lands on me and you.
The gas and tickets, restaurateurs
The clothiers and the bon viveurs,
The lighting bright at end of day--
These bills are all now ours to pay.

And though it's now, and then is then
I'd like to be a child again,
Under the eye of a caring Mother
And leave the bills to someone other!
