Wouldn't you like to be a ginger too? I am.

Check out his commencement speech on YouTube. This guy is pure genius.

I love seeing those big mossy trees, Amos! Did you happen to get to the beach at Sequim Bay State Park? The beach has huge concretions, looks like it's covered with bowling balls and more. (Don't pronounce the first e - it sounds like "squim")

We didn't get to the beach at Sequim but we did get to the old Railroad Bridge Park for a picnic lunch and met some very nice ladies who acted as town boosters.

An unnamed Guest is hinting disparagingly at MOM. Suggesting that downloading it will crash all of Mudcat. I told him to use the little d and savor it in small doses.

Hrmmmph.

What would an unnamed Guest even care about Mom? They
are not her kind of people.

Mom does not interact with those who cannot bother to identify themselves, and we her offspring were brought up in the same way. The very idea! N

"N" is a mystic sign of the Idaho Legion. The meaning is deep and inscrutable to the uninitiated, but you may assume that it means "North."

"N" is more useful in popular culture as the intersection between Mac 'n cheese, pork 'n beans, etc. Mutt 'n Jeff.

Why is it that only one apostrophe is used in these constructions, when clearly two letters are omitted. It should be Mut 'n' Jeff, etc.

I've alway's been big on apostrophe's and use them when e'er I can, e'en if one is uncall'd for. My brother's and I were known far 'n' wide as Mike 'n' Tony 'n' Ted (alternately, "Them Three Troublemaker's").

It's been done. Here's a sample:

Sir Tristram, violer d'amores, fr'over the short sea, had passen-core rearrived from North Armorica on this side the scraggy isthmus of Europe Minor to wielderfight his penisolate war: nor had topsawyer's rocks by the stream Oconee exaggerated themselse to Laurens County's gorgios while they went doublin their mumper all the time: nor avoice from afire bellowsed mishe mishe to tauftauf thuartpeatrick not yet, though venissoon after, had a kidscad buttended a bland old isaac: not yet, though all's fair in vanessy, were sosie sesthers wroth with twone nathandjoe. Rot a peck of pa's malt had Jhem or Shen brewed by arclight and rory end to the regginbrow was to be seen ringsome on the aquaface.

The fall (bababadalgharaghtakamminarronnkonnbronntonner-ronntuonnthunntrovarrhounawnskawntoohoohoordenenthur ? nuk!) of a once wallstrait oldparr is retaled early in bed and later on life down through all christian minstrelsy. The great fall of the offwall entailed at such short notice the pftjschute of Finnegan, erse solid man, that the humptyhillhead of humself prumptly sends an unquiring one well to the west in quest of his tumptytumtoes: and their upturnpikepointandplace is at the knock out in the park where oranges have been laid to rust upon the green since dev-linsfirst loved livvy.

And here's another:

I wish either my father or my mother, or indeed both of them, as they were in duty both equally bound to it, had minded what they were about when they begot me; had they duly consider'd how much depended upon what they were then doing;--that not only the production of a rational Being was concerned in it, but that possibly the happy formation and temperature of his body, perhaps his genius and the very cast of his mind;--and, for aught they knew to the contrary, even the fortunes of his whole house might take their turn from the humours and dispositions which were then uppermost;--Had they duly weighed and considered all this, and proceeded accordingly,--I am verily persuaded I should have made a quite different figure in the world, from that in which the reader is likely to see me.--Believe me, good folks, this is not so inconsiderable a thing as many of you may think it;--you have all, I dare say, heard of the animal spirits, as how they are transfused from father to son, &c. &c.--and a great deal to that purpose:--Well, you may take my word, that nine parts in ten of a man's sense or his nonsense, his successes and miscarriages in this world depend upon their motions and activity, and the different tracks and trains you put them into, so that when they are once set a-going, whether right or wrong, 'tis not a half-penny matter,--away they go cluttering like hey-go mad; and by treading the same steps over and over again, they presently make a road of it, as plain and as smooth as a garden-walk, which, when they are once used to, the Devil himself sometimes shall not be able to drive them off it.

Both books are considered Great Literature, of course.

Built a machine

Let a fart
And blew the machine
All apart

Now... that THERE is great literature.

Aside from the Austinese aspect of it, you expose, not to say, espouse, a great truth there.

Sonnet 07/05/02           Bhean Sidhe                 DCLXXXVIII

It was an odd noise that I heard, this night:
Not quite a scream, but far more than a gasp,
From moonless darkness, with no stars in sight.
What is this coldness, that my insides clasp?
Why do I weaken, hearing sound so far
Only the echo reaches ear, yet mind
Is twisted from intent? How can I bar
Gates of imagination, to wyrd bind?
I fall, boneless with fright, and sweat breaks out;
Bowels turn to water with despair. I weep,
To lose all. I moan, but cannot give shout
To more than whimper, nor my reason keep.
She passes, and I live! Yet dare not rise
For fear of seeing Death within her eyes.

A sharp and telling image, BB! I love the phrase "boneless with fright".

Rapparree, you really must consider being intelligible once in a whiole. It would do you a world of good. Finnegan's Wake is notMOAB, as we all know.

Take the ashtray and the butts and enshrine them in a reliquary of gold and precious. Those butts, having his DNA on them, could someday be important evidence in the inevitable trial.

SRS. Certainly NOT! I cleaned the house 3 years before Amos visited because Mum's ceilings had to be repaired and painted after the insulation guy cracked the gypboard in three rooms and the hallway. She was appalled even so. And I did the same for Beer's (Adrien's) visit in 2007. And I even painted inside and out when I bought the place in 2001. Whew... I am exhausted just thinking about it.

If you RUN the dishwasher with dirty dishes and detergent that will usually pass for "washing" the inside of the dishwasher.

Detergent? You use that in a dishwasher? Why? I just put in whatever's handy -- this morning I used rubbing alcohol.

Clearly, Rapparee is solving a different problem than just washing the dishes. In his case rubbing alcohol may have been the right thing to choose.

MOM, I'm thinking about putting a rope swing in the big hackberry tree in the back yard. I need to figure out how to keep the fire ants from climbing from the tree onto the swing and biting people first.

Soak the ropes in gasoline and when the brigade approaches, strike a match? Should work. At least, once. :)

Fire ants? Rap suggests gas and not C4? How odd.

Look closely and you can see the ashtray. I could take an updated pic but, sadly, there would be no guitar in the pic.

Rub the ropes in water that has been steeped with cigarette butts until a rich brown color. Bet the ants won't touch it! Or maybe cayenne.

Go soak your rope (What a great thing to say!) in a solution of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, let it dry, and you won't be worried with fire ants.

We are Fifty Kay and Seven now,
Since Khandu's starting gun
We're a little gray but we're all still sharp
Enough to make the run
And we know the day's not far ahead
When the Ks make Fifty-one.

No thread that ever Mudcat saw
Has even approached our claim
And all through Mudcat's motley realm
We've earned our noble name
As the thread that has the best of posts
If sometimes less than sane.

The cheers will lift the palace roof
The huzzahs will be rousin'
And all will get a bowl of cheer,
And a proper champagne dowsing.
The day the noble MOAB thread
Breaks the tape at Fifty-one thousand.

So here's to old McGonagle
And Blind Drunk in Blind River
And to the dreams of Rapparree
WHich make you blink and shiver.
And here's to gnu and Stilly too,
And big Bruce, on occasion
For making this most noble thread
The toast of Mudcat nation.
