Well, I defy you, too, Little Hawk. Nothing personal; I am just having a defiant sort of morning.

You have just been defied, Rap. Watcha gonna do? Zap him? Cast him into a pool of piranhas? Infest his house with a billion locusts? How shall the apostate be dealt with?

WEll, that's a real killer of a thought. Great. "Shutup and wait". No thanks, Bookman. I defy that reasoning altogether. Ptui.

I think they were about as wrong as wrong can be...in terms of a God who takes vengeance on people. They were right about some other stuff.

I don't give two toots about the ancient Israelites' obsession with their idea of an angry and vengeful God, Stilly. ;-)

Maybe I am reading between the lines but, you eat some bad Calleeforneeahh raisins A?

Meanwhile, back near the biggest event on the earth tonight (in a public venue), I have just completed my ten laps (2.5km) and I never heard squat from up on the hill. The rain stopped about 45 minutes ago but the air is so humid the music cannot be heard from here, at least by humans of my age. Perhaps if I paid a scalper $1200 at the last... hahahahahaha!

I just have no patience for long-winded dissertations about the subtle exposition of moralistic, over-generalized assertions derived from a postulated impossibility with absurd preoccupations. Two lines and a cold, censorious wind goes through me and I close the book. Bam.

Here's one well-established opinion about that, LH. Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.

Correctly stated, you can imply that it was a private concert at your house.

By the way, I did some investigating and it's not U-2, the band with Bono. It's U-Two, the band with Boneo. They play a sort of Country-Western Reggae with polka undertones.

Holy crap Mum! Is it ever raining now! AaaaNOTHER downpour. People with all manner of raingear (many garbage-bagged youths) trekking the sidewalks here on there way to the bus pickup point for the concert about 500m from me. The concert is about 4km from me as the crow flies. They park in the surrounding neighbourhoods and walk to the pickup point. I don't think U2 is worth a cold (17C... but no wind thank goodness) and blistered feet but I am not young and stupid. Just stupid... I really shoulda bought a Red Zone VIP ticket. $275 and who knows if they'll ever be back?

On the bright side, tis supposed to clear before U2 hit the stage and, if the wind stays down, I should be able to say I heard U2 live in concert at my house.

What to serve with Will?

"People who behave badly end up being their own punishment." Now, THERE is a statement worthy of notation! I foresee it quoted by scholars and philosophers for thousands of years. Well, at least until the Fukushima radiation destroys life on earth as we know it.

I don't think God gets upset with anybody, but has considerable compassion for both children...and the people who in their deep misunderstanding are mean to children. People get upset with other people. God doesn't. In my opinion.

You see, I simply do not believe in an angry God who metes out punishment to the "sinner". People who behave badly end up being their own punishment, plus they get a lot from other people, usually. Life itself punishes them, because they arrange it that way. (This doesn't mean they don't necessarily get a lot of power, money or material stuff and die rich in bed...it's not about that. It's about having inner peace, deep love, and a sense of fullfillment in your life. People who achieve inner peace, deep love, and a sense of fullfillment aren't mean to children and they aren't driven to run around frantically after money, power, and a ton of material stuff.)

I agree that it is voluntary. The will to BE is, of course, crucial. We have all excercised that will.

While the Coexistence of Zeroeth Being is a perfectly wonderful experience and perfectly possible for any being in good enough condition, my opinion is that it is entirely voluntary (it would have to be!) and not an inherent condition of existence.

Prior to the will to Be itself, of course, such distinctions become meaningless.

Nobody's perfect. ;-) Mark Twain included.

When I say that we are all One in Spirit, I mean that we're all part of a singularity, that singularity being everything...or the Unmanifest...or the Totality...or the Alpha and the Omega...or God...or the continuum...or whatever one wishes to call it. No word can adequately define it.

That doesn't mean we don't have individuality. We are as drops in an ocean. Each drop has individuality when you remove it AS a drop and set it aside. Then you can see it. When it's in the ocean, you can't see it, you just see the ocean, but it still exists. Its individuality occurs the moment it becomes aware of itself as apart from the rest of the ocean. Does its individuality vanish when it rejoins the ocean?

I don't know. Maybe so. Maybe not.

The assertion that "all ideas are second-hand" is oxymoronic, self-contradictory, and unsupportable. I understand very well what the swamp of notions Mister Twain refers to is and why it looks like that, but he just missed the boat on that one. Too much absinthe.

I think we are all linked, in more ways than we are even comfortable with. But I do not think we are all one in spirit. Except by an occasional act of will.

Anyway, Mark Twain in this instance is wrong. I never thought I would say so, but the poresence of all the nopise and connectedness in the universe does not diminish in any way the spark of the individual as his own source.

That's like saying that because everything is mixed up in the blender, there cannot possibly be a cook.

I don't see a problem with that, because we are all One in Spirit anyway. So we all share in whatever gets created, but someone gets official recognition for it, that's all. Or they don't. As the case may be. ;-)

Don't worry about it! Just keep on being creative.

...substantially all ideas are second-hand, consciously and unconsciously drawn from a million outside sources, and daily used by the garnerer with a pride and satisfaction born of the superstition that he originated them; whereas there is not a rag of originality about them anywhere except the little discoloration they get from his mental and moral calibre and his temperament, which is revealed in characteristics of phrasing. . . . It takes a thousand men to invent a telegraph, or a steam engine, or a phonograph, or a photograph, or a telephone, or any other Important thing-- and the last man gets the credit and we forget the others. He added his little mite--that is all he did.

In 1868 I read Dr. Holmes's poems, in the Sandwich Islands. A year and a half later I stole his dedication, without knowing it, and used it to dedicate my "Innocents Abroad" with. Ten years afterward I was talking with Dr. Holmes about it. He was not an ignorant ass--no, not he; . . . and so when I said, "I know now where I stole, but who did you steal it from?" he said, "I don't remember; I only know I stole it from somebody, because I have never originated anything altogether myself, nor met anybody who had."

EVE'S SIDE OF THE STORY

After three weeks in the Garden of Eden,   God came to visit Eve. 'So, how is everything going ?' inquired God.

'It is all so beautiful, God,' she replied. 'The sunrises and sunsets are breathtaking, the smells, the sights, everything is wonderful, but I have just one problem.

'It's these breasts you have given me. The middle one pushes the other two out and I am constantly knocking them with my arms, catching them on branches and snagging them on bushes. They're a real pain.'

And Eve went on to tell God that since many other parts of her body came in pairs, such as her limbs, eyes, ears, etc She felt that having only two breasts might leave her body more 'symmetrically balanced'.

'That's a fair point,' replied God, 'But it was my first shot at this, you know. I gave the animals six breasts, so I figured that you needed only half of those, but I see that you are right. I will fix it up right away.'

And God reached down, removed the middle breast and tossed it into the bushes.

Three weeks passed and God once again visited Eve in the Garden of Eden.

'Well, Eve, how is my favorite creation?'

'Just fantastic,' she replied, 'But for one oversight. You see, all the animals are paired off. The ewe has a ram and the cow has her bull. All the animals have a mate except me. I feel so alone.'

God thought for a moment and said, 'You know, Eve, you are right.. How could I have overlooked this ? You do need a mate and I will immediately create a man from a part of you. Let's see....where did I put that useless boob?'
