Singen Sie, singen Sie mit Freude! für habe mich beendet.

O Freunde, nicht diese Töne!
    Sondern laßt uns angenehmere
    anstimmen und freudenvollere.
    Freude! Freude!

    Freude, schöner Götterfunken
    Tochter aus Elysium,
    Wir betreten feuertrunken,
    Himmlische, dein Heiligtum!
    Deine Zauber binden wieder
    Was die Mode streng geteilt;
    Alle Menschen werden Brüder,
    Wo dein sanfter Flügel weilt.

    Wem der große Wurf gelungen,
    Eines Freundes Freund zu sein;
    Wer ein holdes Weib errungen,
    Mische seinen Jubel ein!
    Ja, wer auch nur eine Seele
    Sein nennt auf dem Erdenrund!
    Und wer's nie gekonnt, der stehle
    Weinend sich aus diesem Bund!

    Freude trinken alle Wesen
    An den Brüsten der Natur;
    Alle Guten, alle Bösen
    Folgen ihrer Rosenspur.
    Küsse gab sie uns und Reben,
    Einen Freund, geprüft im Tod;
    Wollust ward dem Wurm gegeben,
    Und der Cherub steht vor Gott.

    Froh, wie seine Sonnen fliegen
    Durch des Himmels prächt'gen Plan,
    Laufet, Brüder, eure Bahn,
    Freudig, wie ein Held zum Siegen.

    Seid umschlungen, Millionen!
    Diesen Kuß der ganzen Welt!
    Brüder, über'm Sternenzelt
    Muß ein lieber Vater wohnen.
    Ihr stürzt nieder, Millionen?
    Ahnest du den Schöpfer, Welt?
    Such' ihn über'm Sternenzelt!
    Über Sternen muß er wohnen.

O of friends, not these tones
! To separate let us more pleasant anstimmen and joy-fuller.
Joy! Joy! Joy, beautiful God sparks daughter from Elysium, we entered feuertrunken, Himmli, your Heiligtum!
Your charms bind again which the fashion strictly divided;
All humans become brothers, where your gentle wing stays.
Whom the large throw successfully to be a friend friend;
Who interferes holdes a woman achieved, its rejoicing!
Yes, who calls also only one soul its on that ground approximately! And wer's never skillfully, steal yourself crying from this federation!
All natures at the chests of nature drink joy; All good ones, all bad consequences of their rose trace.
Kisses it gave us and vines, a friend, examined in death;
Wollust ward the worm given, and the Cherub stands before God.
Gladly, like its suns fly through the sky praecht'gen plan, run, brothers, your course, joyful, like a hero for triumphing.
Are umschlungen, millions! This kiss of the whole world!
Brothers, ueber'm star tent must a dear father live.

You fall down, millions? Do you suspect the creator, world?
Look for ' it ueber'm star tent! Over stars he must live.

Babelfish is more considerate than Rapaire, certes, but only slightly less annoying.

And guess what, Mom!! We're finally getting the new driveway!! Demolition starts Monday. YAY! Soon it will be nice cobbles instead of thirty-year old cracking concrete.

For those of you who were concerned, we are not effected by the recent landslide in nearby La Jolla. We are a mile or two east of the mill called Mount Soledad where that occurred.

You were spared this time, Amos, but all of that work on the house and now the driveway, you're painting an seismic target on your house and property. Just so you know.

Nah, it's more like painting humongous hex wards on your barn, like some Amish do, IIRC. Keeps the evil spirits out. The judgments of the gods was that the Mount Soledadians were spending too much on their homes, and not enough on improvements. We, who have the grace of fortune cast upon us, have reversed the process. We've spent way too much on improvements.

The New Scientist reports on our brave new world redux:

"You arrive home from work, drop your mobile phone, MP3 player and camera on the kitchen table and pour yourself a well-earned drink. Immediately, the music on your MP3 player begins blaring from your hi-fi, photos start downloading to your PC and texts and emails start flashing up on your TV screen.

What's going on? The phone, MP3 player and camera are sending information to the table, which passes it to the walls, which in turn route it to the hi-fi, television and PC.

Takao Someya, Tsuyoshi Sekitani and colleagues at the University of Tokyo, Japan, have developed a flexible, plastic electronic sheet that can be embedded in tables, walls and floors. Plastic transistors and copper wires that snake through the sheets allow gadgets placed on them to form spontaneous connections and swap data."

Oh, tempora, oh, mores. This is an ideal scenario?

Or, as the restaurant critic said trying the experimental new Japanese-American seafood restaurant for the first time, "Oh, tempuri! Oh, moray!".

Today we went out with friends to a little side street that ends in the hill above La Jolla Cove -- a footpath leads down along the bluffs, perhaps eight feet above the surf, looking down on cliffs and bays lined with cormorants, pelicans, and sea lions. We had brunch in a small café looking out over the azure Pacific; you could see half-way to Los Angeles, it was so clear.

Then we strolled the shopping streets and wandered ome again tired by happy.

Oh, fer...

I'd think that someone as urbane, intelligent, and sophisticated as Amos would immediately recognize the words to Shiller's immortal poem -- and even more so, the words to the chorale part of Ludwig von Beethoven's Symphony Number 9 in D minor, Opus 125:

    Oh friends, not these tunes!
    Rather let us sing more
    cheerful and more joyful ones.
    Joy! Joy!

    Joy, beautiful spark of the gods,
    Daughter of Elysium,
    Touched with fire, to the portal,
    Of thy radiant shrine, we come.
    Your sweet magic frees all others,
    Held in Custom's rigid rings.
    All men on earth become brothers,
    In the haven of your wings.

    Whoever succeeds in the great attempt
    To be a friend of a friend,
    Whoever has won a lovely woman,
    Let him add his jubilation!
    Yes, whoever calls even one soul
    His own on the earth's globe!
    And who never has, let him steal,
    Weeping, away from this group.

    All creatures drink joy
    At the breasts of nature;
    All the good, all the evil
    Follow her roses' trail.
    Kisses gave she us, and wine,
    A friend, proven unto death;
    Pleasure was to the worm granted,
    And the cherub stands before God.

    Glad, as his suns fly
    Through the Heavens' glorious plan,
    Run, brothers, your race,
    Joyful, as a hero to victory.

    Be embraced, you millions!
    This kiss for the whole world!
    Brothers, beyond the star-canopy
    Must a loving Father dwell.
    Do you bow down, you millions?
    Do you sense the Creator, world?
    Seek Him beyond the star-canopy!
    Beyond the stars must He dwell

Lordy mercy, Mom! I gotta do EVERYTHING around here!

Oh, yeah. I'm home.

Welcome home, big dude.

But really, you need to face facts here. You make your own work by being such an effete snob and posting in tongues. This sort of Make-Believe Elitism is your downfall. You have no business pretending you are used to kowtowing with German polyglots. It's more likely you have been taken over by Singaporean poltergeists.

Mom I just saw the last episode of "The War". Ken Burns did a really good job ion this one.

Ich sprachen Sie Deutsch nicht.

But when I am filled with joy and happiness I just want to share it, and the "Ode To Joy" is the perfect vehicle! I am still filled with joy, for I have finished (99% -- I still have the bibliography to do) my presentation for next month's meeting in P-burgh. Something that most say cannot be done I have partially done with 90% certainity -- and I'm 90% certain of that! Now I'm off to the really hard part of the "impossibility."

And I can do this by focusing on microdata instead of macrodata, by approaching the problem as an aggregate of small parts instead of one overwhelming whole.

Would you rather

Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
For the Lord God Omnipotent reigneth.
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

For the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

The kingdom of this world
Is become the kingdom of our Lord,
And of His Christ, and of His Christ;
And He shall reign for ever and ever,
For ever and ever, forever and ever,

King of kings, and Lord of lords,
King of kings, and Lord of lords,
And Lord of lords,
And He shall reign,
And He shall reign forever and ever,
King of kings, forever and ever,
And Lord of lords,
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

And He shall reign forever and ever,
King of kings! and Lord of lords!
And He shall reign forever and ever,
King of kings! and Lord of lords!
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Hallelujah!

Sorry, I prefer the Schiller.

Here is how you got here from there.

Somehow that name does seem to kind of fit, doesn't it? There's a separate thread running for this little gem of a site, but I wanted to set MOM up with her own link here.

It's that bouffant hairdo. Bugs have crawled into your ear and eaten around behind it and are now trying to eat their way out via your eardrum. I know, because this happened to someone at work's aunt's cousin's best friend's boy friend's acquaintance, who happens to be a hairdresser's assistant and he heard about it from his employer's nurse's doctor's brother's veterinarian's kennel cleaner. You should have given that hairstyle up in the 1960s, but it's too late now, probably, because all the hairspray has solidified into a mass even a bullet won't penetrate. This isn't all bad, because thousands of years from now archeologists will be able to examine your hair long after the rest of you is dust. In fact, you hair will survive the eventual collapse and re-Big Banging of the Universe. And you'll show up at Judgement Day balder'n a coot, because your hair won't be able to make it.

In other news:

THE 2007 NOBEL PRIZE IN PHYSICS WILL BE AWARDED TO Albert Fert
(Université Paris-Sud, Orsay, France) and Peter Grünberg
(Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany) for the discovery of giant
magnetoresistance, or GMR for short. GMR is the process whereby a
tiny magnetic field, such as that of an oriented domain on the
surface of a computer hard drive can, when the proper read head is
brought nearby, trigger a large change in electrical resistance,
thus *reading* the data vested in the magnetic orientation. This
is the heart of modern hard drive technology and makes possible the
immense hard-drive data storage industry. Fert and Grünberg
pioneered the making of stacks consisting of alternating thin layers
of magnetic and non-magnetic atoms needed to produce the GMR
effect. GMR is a prominent example of how quantum effects (a large
electrical response to a tiny magnetic input) come about through
confinement (the atomic layers being so thin.); that is, atoms
interact differently with each other when they are confined to a
tiny volume or a thin plane.

Aren't we glad and grateful to these men?

Well, the ENT guy cureated my ear, yessiree he did. It was an infected hair follicle (that sounds so much more dignified than pimple) and he got out his little ear vacuum thing and made a roaring sound in my ear for a couple of minutes and cleaned and drained it. The swelling has reduced a great deal and I feel almost human again.

Human enough, in fact, to put in my call to the insurance folks about the roof. Big storm came through in May and I'm only now getting around to reporting the damage. I was working on getting a sick kid cured in May, I wasn't fooling with shingles. But, I figure I'll try to get this taken care of before the rainy season. I am glad your ear has been properly sucked, now. It does make the world look a little rosier, I daresay.

Rapaire, you shouldn't put too much stock on things you cotton to or don't. We here in California don't hold with cottoning much.

In the early days of radio there was an old-timer interviewed as to what he thought about it. He said, "I don't hold with it.". The interviewer asked him, "What do you mean?"/

He replied, "I don't hold with furniture that talks!"

In the day, this was a real side-splitter -- right up there with "Take my wife--please!".

Good God.

I was perusing the "Legals" in the this morning's paper (I do this because sometimes there are things the City is doing that are relevant to the Library) and...and...

my neighbor's house is being sold at a foreclosure auction.

The guy to the east, the architect, who stole my fence. I don't get along with him (she's quite nice), and he has a yard full of "toys" but still...foreclosure?

If anyone wants to pick up a very nice house on a golf course for about $185K (US) I know of a good one.

How did he steal your fence? Sounds like a good story. Perhaps not as nuanced as the buried freezer chests under the sundeck, but still, interesting.

Do you use SPRINT? I had to wait a few days last summer to replace our phones because they were transferring our account over to a new server or system. They do it by regions or banks of account numbers or something, a few percent of their whole system at a time. I think I had to reestablish some of my account information after that also. But I've gotten a couple of nice discounts out of it.

Right about now it doesn't matter, since a lot of parts of trees fell down in heavy wet snow (it was unexpected!) last Saturday. But the trunks range up to about 40 inches around or more. There were elk on the golfcourse last winter, so you could have fuel AND food.
