Where are the other insomniacs when I really need them.

Still exhausted from the Getaway (sorry Stilly), but can't sleep.

Maybe it is a guilty conscience?

Wake me when you're done with all of the getaway reminiscing. . .

I'm just a typical American boy
From a typical American town
I believe in God and Senator Dodd
And keepin' ol' Castro down
And when it came my time to serve
I knew better dead that Red
But when I got to my ol' draft board
Buddy this is what I said:

Sarge I'm only 18
I've got a ruptured spleen
And I always carry a purse
I got eyes like a bat
And my feet are flat
And my asthma's gettin' worse.
Consider my career
My sweetheart dear
My poor old invalid aunt
Besides I ain't no fool
I'm a-goin' to school
And I'm workin' in a defense plant. (etc.)

or perhaps

We sailed her out of Gloucester
To hunt the mighty whale
A crew of twenty seasoned whaling men.
With Slocum at the wheel and me and Drury hauling sail
And the Captain shouting orders at the wind. (etc.)

or perhaps

One mornin' in March
I was diggin' the land
With me brogues on me feet
And me spade in me hand
Says I to meself
"Such a pity to see
Such a fine strappin' lad
Spuddin' turf round Tralee." (etc.)

or even

He was dirty and hairy and covered with fleas
But he had his women by twos and threes   (etc.)

So, Amos, whether or not I attend next year's orgy is a moot point. I already know these songs and others, indeed many others. Songs like "Michael Row The Boat Ashore" and "Kumbaya" and "Pop Goes The Weasel" and "Yankee Doodle" and "Riding A Raid" and "Greenland Whale Fisheries" and "Shoals of Herring" and "Bold Fenian Men" and "The Sun Is Burning" and "Universal Soldier" and "Tavern In The Town" and "Bill Bailey" and "Casey Jones" (three versions, two of them clean) and "Viva La Quinze Brigada" and "D-Day Dodgers" and "She'll Be Comin' 'Round the Mountain" and "Blue Tail Fly" and "Dixie's Land" and "We Shall Overcome" and "If You Don't Look Around" and "Coal Tattoo" and "Springhill Mine Disaster" and "Red River Valley" and "Green Grow the Lilacs" and "Darcy Farrow" and "Day Of the Clipper" and "Mon Vrai Destin" and two versions of "Stewball" and "I've Never Killed Before" and "Sully's Bucket" and "Where Have All The Flowers Gone?" and "The Moonshiner" and "Bingo Farm" and "Die Gedanken Sind Frei" and lots and lots more. I'd make a CD of all of the songs I know except you can't sing and play the trumpet at the same time -- something my mother knew when she had me learn trumpet.

So there. Why should I have to travel halfway around the world?

I charge you, good my Rapaire, this day therefore to ready these songs all, by your own mouth to be sung, and that in full at next year the Getaway in far Mary's Lande, that ye shall no longer be restrained to scurrilous remarks as the bitter fox was when he could not taste the sweet grapes.

Bastard King of England
Draft Dodger Rag
The Kerry Recruit
John Cook

But really, I think it would depend upon the audience. Not knowing the words to, say, "A Nation Once Again" or "Come Out Ye Black and Tans" would probably land you in more trouble in a Chicago pub on St. Patrick's Day than not knowing "God Save the Queen."

This raises the question whether one is doomed to get into worse trouble being ignorant of Mattie Groves than one is by being ignorant of Slat Back Sally or The Balls of Carrimuir. Which songs can you be most in trouble for NOT knowing based on the axiom that you will have to re-live them?

Donald Rumsfeld would also be interested to know if there is any method of listing out "unknown unknowns" so as to do a proper assessment of them, and the risks one is standing into by unknowing them.

That just goes to show what YOU know, Rapaire.

The liquor was not cheap!

btw, Leo. I found a pixie to put a spell on you and whatever vehicle you happen to be riding in over Getaway weekend that dooms you to breakdown if you are headed anywhere other than to the Getaway. Sorry I forgot to tell you about it, and very relieved you were not in an airplane.

Your uncharitable and condescending description does not match any of the realities those of us who were there actually experienced, Bookman. Perhaps your vocabulary is outstripping your perspicacity.

As to lewd songs, may I remind you that there is good reason to study the provenance of such things, viz: those who do not know their history are doomed to repeat it.

In short, drunken debauchery, lewd songs, off-key music, cheap liquor, and dirty jokes during a lost weekend in Maryland.

Remember, Mom doesn't do bail or pay fines.

MM:

You are right--the time warps have Gluon's footprints all over them. The food was even better this year, enhanced by the new Dining Commons and Kitchen building just opened in time for us. The problem with traveling through time warps like this one with a material body is that the time-displacement effects linger--it takes 48-96 hours for all the spins to re-balance, and until they7 do you never know whether you are up, down or charmed. The body seems visible and manages (usually) to grip light objects, but the brain circuitry is especially vulnerable to the rebalancing effect. I was having a perfectly normal discussions with an office aide just now, about some design review inputs, and all of a sudden I was sitting in a cabin listening to Hils' piercing voice sing "Lonely PLaces" and I could not come back to reality to save my life until the verse had finished. God, can that gal sing!

Speaking from Experience, I am pretty sure Gluon does attend Getaway. The time warps are the give-away

And judging by what's left after the friday night pot-luck it is quite possible the freds attend as well.

Well, we had a very conscientious and productive Getaway collecting, comparing and analyzing the provenance of rare ballads and other forms of ethnic musical expression. We attended numerous presentations and some quite intense informal peer-group discussions. All in all I think it was highly productive. I was very impressed with the vocal clarity of My Guru Always Said (who is Hils)) from England. Gordon Bok ran a nice workshop on certain ethnomusicological artefact as relating to the Mongolian Hill Tribe culture. Barry Finn presented on the idiosyncratic linguistic convention of Anglo-Saxon maritime tradition. Lonesome E.J. wailed on the harp and got skunked on sipping whiskey. One of the more remarkable aspects of t6his year's ethnomusicological convention (colloquially refered top as the Getaway) was the highly affect-inducing abundance of pulchritude which was supplied by Janie, Dani, KT, M-G-A-S, ClaireBear, Jacquie, Tink and a wide selection of other scholarly oviductarians. I believe even Kendall was finally forced to acknowledge the net yield of pulchritude for the year was well above averages for all known past Getaway conventions.

Hi MOM, I'm home.

Me 'n Amos sure had fun this weekend. Amos ain't home yet, and I just want to say, MOM, that you shouldn't be mad at him for leaving you in the airport bar at O'Hare. But the plane was due to take off, and you were too drunk to walk. I thought it was really solicitous of him to put that luggage tag around your wrist with your name and address on it before he had to rush off for the the flight to BWI.

Looks like you got home OK. All's well that ends well, and all that....

Ali G is a character created by Sacha Baron Cohen to satirize what I would assume is the hip-hop and Rap-based youth culture in the UK. He appears as the host of a talk show and does interviews with celebrities. Do a search on Youtube and you will find numerous episodes of Ali G's show.

And while we're talking about it, in order to develop a novel model to predict if a so called normal tetrahedral compound crystallizes in a wurtzite- or sphalerite superstructure type, the system Cu3AsS4-Cu3SbS4 was reinvestigated. A solid solution series was prepared and the mixed crystals were characterized by powder X-ray techniques. The crystal structures of Cu3As0.330Sb0.670S4, Cu3As0.736Sb0.264S4, and Cu3AsS4 were refined from single crystal X-ray data. The refinements converged to R = 0.0209, wR2 = 0.0484 (Cu3As0.330Sb0.670S4, 201 unique reflections, 15 parameters), R = 0.0235, wR2 = 0.0596 (Cu3As0.736Sb0.264S4, 218 reflections, 15 parameters), and R = 0.0241, wR2 = 0.0669 (Cu3AsS4, 721 reflections, 45 parameters). Z is 2 for all compounds. The volumes of the tetrahedra [MS4] were calculated for the investigated compounds. In addition, the corresponding data were calculated for further solids from literature data. The volumes of the tetrahedra are used to separate compounds with a sphalerite type anion arrangement from compounds with hexagonal packed anions. A closer inspection of the tetrahedra volumes reveals a greater variation for one given material in the case of wurtzite type superstructures than for sphalerite type superstructures.

I prefer a book written from the persepctive of a fruit bat. Doesn't Stella Luna visit jimson weed? Yes, I know what it is. It's a noxious beauty. The mice love the seeds and race around that part of the garden in winter eating them. They must be able to process the toxins. The dogs have been trying to process those mice, when I let them in the front yard. :)

Just the fact that you know Everett, Washington (my home town, though I did live in West Seattle, Washington, until I was 11, but I wasn't born there and I'll keep that part to myself for a security question) says you MUST know Bob Nelson. There's no other answer for it.

Just put up another treatise on organic gardening. How many takers do you think I'll have to my premise that one should poke through the garden and remove some pests by hand, so you know what's out there? I need to take a class on insects. Or read a good text book.

Read it out loud to MOM. She'll enjoy the caterpillar close-ups.

We ARE, after all, professionals to the core and more.

Besides, how would Bob know what I look like? I haven't seen him in, oh, a couple of weeks or less now.
