(Sort of an experiment in trans-species signaling, like Koko's sign language.)

Well, thank heavens for that! Total barbarians are just as barbaric as all get out, drinking tea without having their pinky raised and dribbling crumbs all over from the biscuits and even failing to wipe their shoes before entering the house. Horrible people, really. Why, I knew one who would even belch at table without excusing himself...naturally we never invited HIM back!

Guns, knives, fists, swords, machetes, brass knuckles, rocks, clubs...I don't care. Just don't, whatever you do, throw me into that briar patch!

Matter of fact, I have a rubber plant here. I glance in its direction every now and then. It seems to be flourishing.

"Meretricious" is a wonderful word, Amos, and I do plan to use it quite a bit in the near future. Thank you. But it pales in significance next to "frisson"!!! Omigod...!

Frisson!

How I love the sound of that. I have almost no idea what it means, but it's French, and nothing conveys the subtle sense of linguistic grandeur that a French term does when transplanted into English prose. I intend to slip the word "frisson" casually into many of my future posts, Amos. I could kiss your hand for having brought it to my attention.

Frisson.

I am just breathless here...I must find out exactly what it means, so as to use it with the utmost devastating panache, and reduce my more pedestrian counterparts (like Shane) to stunned silence as they marvel at my erudition.

Frisson!!!

And again...it would be a waste of time. I'd rather watch a rubber plant grow, frankly. ;-)

Oh, please do, Little Hawk.

Your aspersions are not only small-minded and unkind, they are also inaccurate and meretricious, another word I offer to your groveling dustpan-ful of collectible terms.

A new slang word came to my attention today: "choreplay" is the frisson of excitement a woman experiences when she gets to watch her husband or boyfriend do laundry, dishes, or vacuuming.

The post which stated:

was indeed 801, you are quite right.

But I did not say "now with this post I claim 800".

I said "I HAVE claimed it", which I had done in the previous post.

Language is much harder than counting, I agree....

Amos is a true master when it comes to wiggling, squirming, and avoiding all responsibility for his errors. He will go to any degree of effort to maintain an untenable position as if it were an unassailable fortress. If he were a worm, it would be very tricky indeed to get him on your hook. A waste of time, in fact.

I feel that the problem is rooted somewhere in his childhood, but it would require much investigation to dredge up from his tortured subconscious the original trauma or traumas that have resulted in his present dysfunction.

And again...it would be a waste of time. I'd rather watch a rubber plant grow, frankly. ;-)

Dear MM:

Counting is done in this wise. You start with A Number -- any will do. You then add to it by a single whole number and increment it to this new total. Thus, if we start with "1", counting goes 1...2...3...4... and so on. This works for any starting number. If we begin with your age,for example, it would go like this: 51...52...53...54....55... and so on. See? I leave it as an exercise for you to work out how this would apply, for example, if you begin with your IQ!

I did NOT miss.

It is the deep magnetic thrall
The natural pull, deep-sensed by all,
That moves me onward on this line
Toward seven hundred ninety nine.
Who could such charm and pull deny?
Who could turn back, say "No, not I!"?
None who have a human spine
COuld walk away from ninety-nine.

And seek forgiveness, all, most kind
In questing 7-ninety-9.
It is not hubris, whim or fate
That leads me to this gracious gate
Nor some delusion of the mind
THat steers me toward that ninety-nine...

The good nuns taught me that all prayers -- ALL! -- are answered. Eventually and perhaps in ways you don't expect.

Like the time I prayed and prayed for a passing grade on an arithmetic test but got a character-building experience instead.

Well, was the floor mature enough to assert its faith before you sprinkled it? IF so, even water-jacket water becomes sanctified through some divine process of sublimation, and your prayers may be answered1.

1Divine receipt of prayers even under approved conditions not guaranteed. Not all prayers which are received will be answered. Not all prayers which are answered will be answered in the exact form requested. Answers to prayers may vary from originating request in any dimension or attribute at the sole discretion of the Grantor. Not all answers to prayers will be timely, and some may be singularly untimely and appear inappropriate to your circumstances on arrival. Senders of prayers undertake absorption into the Divine Reality Distortion Field at their own risk. The Divinity assumes no fault or liability, implied or explicit, for any consequence of faith-based actions on the part of the Requestor or Aspirant. Your prayer-response experience may vary, and the Grantor assumes no obligation to reveal or explicate the variables governing the response in any way shape or form, other than in ways the Grantor may select in his sole discretion without prior notice or clarification. Offer void where prohibited.

Speaking of sprinkling water. . .

there has been a spot on my garage floor for a few weeks. Yesterday I took the pickup in to see if it was the radiator (proximity being my sole diagnostic tool in this matter). Nope. Water pump. Set me back $500 smackers this afternoon. Oy. Some heavenly intervention via a cash infusion would be mighty welcome about now!

AH, well. I stand reproved, for trying to make you dig it all up and condense it for me.

I cannot help but wonder whether those who get wrapped around the axle on the precis emoment of watering have any sense of the disproportionality between their exegisis and the take of Genesis.

Amos - there are over 80 thousand hits on google for "infant baptism versus adult".

*grin* I personally doubt if sprinkling, submerging, drinking, dunking or anything else with water makes any difference to God; but you know how hung up administrators get about procedure.

But infants operate ENTIRELY on faith -- they're MADE of the stuff!! THat's how they survive.

And, the other thing I miss about this question is the word "valid".

a. What does it mean in this context?

b. Whose decision is it to make or to announce?

My best friend when I was in elementary school was from a devout Catholic family. She distilled it down to its essence: "If you're ever in a car crash and you're sure you're going to die you can sprinkle yourself with some radiator water and that's good enough to get you to heaven."

I think it's a matter of whether or not baptism is valid without the individuals profession of faith - which an infant can't give
