I really like this picture. Why? Because the coin they use for size comparison is totally unfamiliar. I have no idea whether it's half the size of a US dime or as big as a dinner plate. For all the information the photo transmits, that chip may be big enough to use as an anchor for a small boat!

Mine was a CPM-driven Osborne 1 which was positively luggable.

I loved learning about it and wrote my first large program on it -- it was for my wife to balance her checkbook on. It had unusual error messages like "Acccck!! Go get Amos!!!" and "Are you really sure you wrote a check that big?".

I never watched Howdy Doody so I'll skip that one.

Earlier you asked about why 8088?

Here's why. And here. My first computer was an 8088--the Eagle.

As an editorial remark for the under-priveleged or uninformed:

"Howdy, who premiered in March 1948 was an all-American boy with red hair, forty-eight freckles (one for each state in the Union), and a permanent smile. Howdy's face symbolized the youthful energy of the new medium and appeared on the NBC color test pattern beginning in 1954.

Smith treated the marionettes as if they were real, and as a result, so did the children of America. Among the many unusual marionettes on the show was Phineas T. Bluster, Doodyville's entrepreneurial mayor. Howdy's grumpy nemesis, Bluster had eyebrows that shot straight up when he was surprised. Bluster's naive, high-school-aged accomplice, was Dilly Dally, who wiggled his ears when he was frustrated. Flub-a-dub was a whimsical character who was a combination of eight animals. In Howdy and Me, Smith notes, "Howdy, Mr. Bluster, Dilly, and the Flub-a-Dub gave the impression that they could cut their strings, saunter off the stage, and do as they pleased." "

Through Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring
That was 8900 you heard ring!!
Call the herd, and join the Muster
Look out, gang, it's P.T. Bluster!
Don't be playing with your pud,
Or you'll answer to Chief Thunderthud!
To sleep and dream, ah, there's the rub,
Dreaming of the Flubadub!!
While a bad boy jeers and pelts her
Indian Princess runs from seltzer!
Better far than Rooty Kazooty
And Polka Dotty, is Howdah Duty!!

Hey, kids!! What time is it?????

of course, when you do purchase the optional air conditioning, all that happens is they open the howdah. Since that is easily done on your own, I'd much rather perform the howdah duty myself.

Yeah, Vinnie is a sharp operator. He tried to tell me he came from a long line of mahouts, but I wasn't having any. Places I go, I don't need four-leg-drive, especially two stories tall.

Ha! Did you get suckered into that? ALL elephants come with cruise control. And built-in rear defrosters. The air conditioning is optional though.

But why settle for a standard elephant when, for just $3,000 more, you can get one with air conditioning, cruise control, and a rear-window defroster?

You are a dog, sir!! Less by far than a standard elephant.

Well said, MM. I think you are the first scientist in history to define the universe in terms of the standard elephant. This should go down in the history books of brilliant insights.

And, as well, that while we THINK of a second as

      60x60x24
more precisely measured as 9,192,631,770 vibrations of one atom of cesium, to an accuracy of about 1/10^13.

Faux 8884!!! Yay!

You should be aware that:

The approximate mass of an electron is 9 x 10^-31 kilograms.

The approximate mass of an elephant is 5 x 10^3 kilograms.

The approximate mass of the known physical universe is approximately 10^53 kilograms.

And that, my friends, is a great many indeed of kilograms.

Having been born in Quincy, IL I sorta like to collection Quincys. I've been to Quincy, CA; Quincy, MI; Quincy, MA (but it's a Quinzee, not a Quinsee); and Quincy, IN. There's also Quincy, WA and Quincy, OR. I'm pretty certain I've missed some, too.

If I had the plague
I would aroint
And sit me down in a burger joint.
Eating the whoppers,
Fat and swell,
Guaranteed to make me well!!

Whack fall diddly, doo rum ring
Make me one with everything

If I were a mindless,
Bureaucratic cog
Each day for lunch I would eat hot dogs!
Chow down buns and relish times three
Guaranteed to make me free!

Whack fall diddly, doo rum ring
Make me one with everything

If I were a mean ole
Alley Cat
I'd eat hot dogs to make me fat
Steal from the vendors in their carts
And break those lady kittens' hearts

Whack fall diddly, doo rum ring
Make me one with everything

And if I were under
A bodhi tree
I'd use hamburger to set me free
Eat all the bacon burgers I could wanna
Make my way up to McNirvana!

Whack fall diddly, doo rum ring
Make me one with everything

Bernard enters, stage right, looking moonstruck. He stares at the sky, rubbing his stomach.

Bernard: Oh!! How I wish I had a hot dog! Or a HAMBURGER!! How I wish the Cow-Burner was here!!

Strings intro. Bernard sings while moving to stage front and traipsing to and from melodramatically"
Cow-burner, cow-burber, burn me a cow
Don't ask me when, don't ask me how!
Make me a burger so full of a delight,
And burn me a cow
To-night!

Dog maker, dog maker, make me a dog!
Long as a mile!
Thick as a log!
Rich with red catsup and mustard so bright!
And make me a dog,
To-night!!

You can make my stomach growl,
Make the rafters sing!
All I'm asking, take my soul
And make me one
With everything!!

Cow-burner, cow-burner, burn me a cow
Any old way! Any old how!
Fire your charcoal up, burning and bright,
And burn me a cow,
To-night!!

Coda of light-hearted strings plays as he dances of stage left, leaping....

Dear freds,

Catsup is not made from cats. It is not very high in protein. You would be much better off eating hot dogs which, by the way, aren't made from dogs. The average American human eats 55 hot dogs a year. In exchange for not eating me, you may have my 55 hot dogs. Well, not quite.... You may have 53. I just ate two for lunch.
