I donno what sad s you've got, but the google ads on my screen are for "a musical journey to the Red Rock Folk Festival - and an ad for some singer whose name looks like it is the way you would spell a sneeze.

achintya! Gesundheit!

Even google is getting into the act, offering up a keg beer dispenser and the exotic "kegspediter system, A controlled process for the return of empty kegs to the brewery." Mom, can we get one of those?

Who knew?

How strange the night, oh wan the hour,
That sees no bloom or bursting flower
Here on the thread, which 'til this day
Was ever thrown aloft, in play;
And now, like some betrayed companion
SInks to the lowest Mudcat canyon,
And waves the clouds and sly farewell,
As Mom approaches Drop Off Hell.
Oh, no! Good friends, let i'ne'er be so!
Your hearts and minds to Mother show,
And turn your wits to work, and then,
Loving and laughing raise her up again.

Cadwallader Devereaux
"Brave Hearts in Weak Bodies--A Collection"
Wincing and Simpers,

Lines On A Piss Poor Poet

Worthy of McGonegal, I declare;
How strange to find his talent rare
And long thought happily, finally, dead,
Raising again its cheerful head
To haunt a later, different time
With equal awkwardness of rhyme
And stilted pace; enough, enough!
The world's well-gifted with such stuff.
But let it be, to each man's choosing
To read what he finds most amusing.
And let us also add, I wot,
To not read what amuseth not.

Claracile Fortinez.
Alabaster Poems
Whiteshell-On-Thunk, 1938

I though that delicacy was unknown outside Scotland. I pity those who have met it...

A pint or two of Irn Bru,
The drink that never fails ya!
It's rusty brown, a trusty round
That's sure to nail what ails ya!

A keg of spikes--brings to mind the wooden kegs that used to be along the railroad track at our remote lake cabin when I was a child. The rail started with the coal mining and logging in the area and became a regularly used trunk line for many years. We parked beside the road and walked down a path, across the railroad tracks, and into our back gate to the cabin on Lake Whatcom. As children we used to play around the tracks (only two trains in the morning and two in the evening, as I recall, so it was pretty safe). We'd pick up old spikes and take a barrel or two home if they weren't picked up after track work.

So, naming a beverage keg "Spike" might be a great blast from the past, but I'm afraid that consuming any of it would leave me fit to be tied.

Next. . .

On thirteen-one-thirteen, congratulations!
A post sure to induce such wild elation,
Such deathless prose that every MOAB lass
And lad agree, it should be dipped in brass.

There's always 'Spikes', if you want a name that gets straight to the point.....

I was thinking beer, but if they want to try drinking a keg of nails that is up to them. That would be a new spin on a non-alcohol drink. Too bad the name Sharp's is already taken!

Keg of what? Blasting powder? Nails? Root beer? Or...well, it certainly wouldn't be whiskey because everyone knows that the Legion is renowned as a leader in the Temperance Movement. One of its mottoes is "Down With The Liquor!" Another is "Away With Rum!" Another is "Throw Away The Corks!" After all, on the periodic fishing trips north to Alberta they drink Canada dry.

There will be fireworks at the Fairgrounds, easily visible from my back porch. Unfortunately (in more ways that one) I won't be there to see them.

Ah well. I will "do" the Glorious Fourth when I get home on Sunday. Yessir, I got me one of these bad boys!! Should make a really nice display.

But maybe Rapaire can shoot some big sparkly pyrotechnics over that big grassy area behind his house. No one else should be using it after dark, right?

If the grapevine theory of parallel universes splitting off from instants in time has any merit, perhaps it will be no problem finding things to amuse your disincarnate merry self. You may find, about thirty-three hundred universes over, one in which we were born siblings and shared all the marbles.

Condolences on your loss, Mike.

Meanwhile, in news of a somewhat related but far less serious matter,
I've decided that I like the number "13031" so much that I'm going to wait until then to be reincarnated. Sure, that's 11,025 years but, hey, I'll be dead so who's counting. One year, ten years or a million years are all the same when you're dead. Or so they say....

I just hope my attempts to make "13031" into a cultural icon don't backfire on me and result in so many people wanting to be born that year that they can't squeeze us all in. Maybe a backup number would be appropriate....

Visitation is Thursday, 3-5 and 7-9; Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Friday. Burial in Arlington at 0900, 14 August 2006.

Amos, I quite agree.

Did you know that you can get a pass to DRIVE around Arlington if you have a relative (like an Uncle or FIL or parent) buried there? 'Strue, and it annoys the HECK out of the tourists who have to take that little train or walk.

My father in law was similarly honored at Arlington, and the formality, the gravitas of it all was enough to make you turn Republican. It was a very sobering and reflective afternoon, walking behind the caisson and observing the punctilious propriety of the well-drilled procedures. All the honor was well-deserved.

But on reflection I would prefer to see a similar decorum afforded to those who had defended freedom by exercising it in other ways, less familiar to nationalist concerns.

Those Mexican ones are very impressive. I was lucky enough to see some people who really knew what they were doing showing them off on stage last summer. Their partners were juggling machetes , but the women were definitly better.

Full circles are easy, if you can get hold of extra wide (96 inch) fabric. You can just draw out a very big cicle, and then all you have to do is get a 7 yard hem straight and level. The normal solution to this is to supply a few of the dressmaking gang with a sewing machine etc, and several bottles of white wine, and hope you're not what they're laughing about....

I made one of those multi-tiered skirts for myself years ago. Yards and yards and yards of gauzy fabric later it was finally finished. I kept it even though it doesn't fit any more just as reminder never to make one of those again.

Having had to make them for various neices, I can say that the statement could well read:

A dress, with a full length, full circle skirt and linings has a ridiculous amount of fabric in it.

Especially the Mexican style full circle skirt, which is actually TWO or more full circles.

Yes, the Americal was at Chu Lai, where my brother Tony worked in support of their firebases. He was First Log Corps, but attached to support the Americal Division. That was not a very good time, running JP4 (jet fuel) and gasoline up and down Highway 1....

Unlike the 1st Infantry, the 101st Airborne, or 25th Infantry, the Americal isn't one of the Divisions the media favors. The Americal just does what has to be done and gets on with it.

My condolences as well; times like this are tough on family - even when the death is a relief for the one concerned.
My folks just got back from an AmeriCal reunion - bitter sweet events for them now as there are less and less WWII vets there every time. Haven't heard their news from this trip, but last year they were the only intact couple remaining that made it (there had been four couples the previous year) - though there are some where the couple used to come and the surviving/healthier partner still attends.

Mom and Dad have been "adopted" by a group of VietNam vets though - which means they still have familiar faces

When I told her, Pat's first words were a heartfelt "Thank God!" After 28 days in the intensive/enhanced care, with tubes down his throat, with a "central line" moved every few days from one vein to another, with very little "real" food (and that was applesauce), with bedsores developing, with the prospect of three months of rehab in front of him, yes, he's at peace now.

Pat's in DC, I'm in Pocatello and I'll be flying out in a couple days.

Things are better this way, really. The only problem is that the burial and the funeral service will be temporally distant from each other because Arlington NC has such a backlog due to the hundred of other WW2 vets dying. And by the way, he's eligible (and Pat will ensure that he has) the riderless horse, the caisson, an 18-gun salute, and so on.

I've got a lot to do before I fly out. I'll know more this morning, I hope.

It's a tough time, and the airlines don't make it any easier with their humongous "bereavement" fare that is half of the highest price they can manage for a seat. I bounced around the U.S. in shock on a three-legged journey the day after I learned of my father's death. The flight crew knows who you are--aside from the deer-in-the-headlights look, if you make any eye contact at all, you're the one not talking to your seat mate, if you have one.

I met a marvelous man on my flight to Seattle when I learned of my mother's critical condition. I was seated in those odd front row seats on a Southwest flight so my row was knee-to-knee with three folks riding backwards. At a lull in the conversation I asked one of the locals for directions to Virginia Mason Hospital, and after ascertaining the reason for my visit this guy, who was apparently a local entrepreneur and inventor, who knows, maybe he's one of Bill Gate's friends or lackeys (it sounded like), proceeded to smoothly shift the conversation into the wonders of inventions. It may sound like it was a self-centered conversation, but it wasn't at all. His goal was to keep all of us talking and clearly, to keep me thinking about other things. I still think back very fondly to that flight and am one who can say I have truly encountered the kindness of strangers.

Give Pat a big hug, and one for you, too. Mike. It's going to be hard on you, also.

Maggie
