I gave my kids an ultimatum today. They have to do some reading this summer, they can't just watch TV, play games, and chat on the computer. My son wanted to know how long he had to read his book (I gave him The Andromeda Strain). I told him that if he doesn't reach a point where he can't put it down and just finishes it, that I thought a week was pretty reasonable. So he did the math and read enough pages today so that he can pace himself to read it in a week. My daughter refused my suggested book (Invisible Man) and read something left over that she picked up during the school year. It was amazing, for a couple of hours, no other keystrokes and game voices, just comfortable chairs and good reading lamps and heads bent over books. :)

They have a new tool, called Google Bookshelf. It takes forever to load the page, so you get up and go to the bookshelf, and find it yourself, in a real book.....

Apparently, he tried singing this, but having some proper musicians about, they could keep the tune going despite a few beers, but made up some new words, as they couldn't remember the old ones....

Also Jefferson, S. Adams, Washington, and Madison that I'm certain of. They were very religious men when it came to this chapter and verse.

Well, an uplifting topic indeed - and one that was near and dear to at least one of our Founding Fathers - in fact, many suspect that it inspired Benjermin Franklin to song.

We also discussed, at great length, 1 Timothy 5:23.

Do they still bring in the live models to illustrate the Song of Songs?

On those occassions when I have attended ALA I have spent my time with the Seminary and Theological Libraries Section discussing biblical matters such as the proper context of the Song of Songs.

SOME librarians stay home and keep serving the patrons! SOME librarians are committed to their profession! SOME librarians are sick and tired of the smoke-filled rooms, the nude dancing in hotel hallways, the flagrant and open sex and drunkeness! SOME librarians have budgets that allow for such things, too.

Things get real quiet in our office when ALA comes around. I work at home a lot now, but when I was driving over everyday I always enjoyed the week of ALA--far fewer interruptions!

ALA?? 40,000 librarians in one place is frightening enough all by itself, much less 40,000 librarians politickin' in the heat and humidity of Nawlins.

I've been to ALA more than a few times. Too big, too expensive, too noisy, too many people pushing agendas, and too little offered that's of immediate or proximate assistance to me and my problems (I don't have opportunities). On the other hand, many of my friends go and beer and jazz is never to be scoffed at (neither is Nawlins). And I could go for a Sazarac cocktail, yeah, but Nawlins ain't been the same since...oh, since they closed down Storyville.

(And yes, I am a member of ALA.)

Today I went to work, caught up on some things, went to the luncheon meeting of one of the Rotary clubs and presented a little speech on the history of mobile library services in the US, made TWO excellent contacts for the future, had a Board meeting where we decided to re-roof the old part of the building (it's on the National Register) and close on August 16th for staff in-service and allow the University to digitize some of our unique photographs, etc. and decided to close on December 26. I also met with three people over the phone, talked another library director into presenting at Thursday's Rotary Club meeting, made some decisions which will affect those who park illegally in our lots, and talked with my wife (her dad's been moved to an "enhanced care" room and out of the SICU). It was an 11 hour day.

Let's see...I met with the president of the company and provided him with a research report I am developing and planned the outline of a major training campaign we need to do. Then I spent several hours setting up remote video on a remote-controlled test bed for observing sensor responses to varying current and frequency signals. I took some steps on the infrastructure for the training campaign and finished a presentation on some safety issues as a favor to the Admin VP. I came home, went to home depot for some pipe, fixed a plumbing revision needed for the waterfall and put it back together and tested it, cooked a big dinner for two, and sang Lorena on my Martin. I wrote several essays and posted numerous quips here and there.

Now I am going to retiure with a good book.

demain, mes copains.

Back to LH's question, I haven't been writing here all day. I've been working. And now that I've skimmed over all of the day's chatter (much of it maintained by the same said LH) I'm all caught up and I'll send this then head to the shower and to bed. I'll let Rapaire's description of his work day stand. Mine wasn't so sweepingly significant, but it was very busy and productive, nonetheless.

Sorry. I started to say, An excerpt:

"Is there one network president in this room who claims he can't do better? Well, is there at least one network president who believes that the other networks can't do better? Gentlemen, your trust accounting with your beneficiaries is overdue. Never have so few owed so much to so many.

Why is so much of television so bad? I have heard many answers: demands of your advertisers; competition for ever-higher ratings; the need always to attract a mass audience; the high cost of television programs; the insatiable appetite for programming material--these are some of them. Unquestionably these are tough problems not susceptible to easy answers.

But I am not convinced that you have tried hard enough to solve them . . . and I am not convinced that the people's taste is as low as some of you assume."

Newton Minow's speech to the National Association of Broadcasters on May 9, 1961

I have a confession to make. I've been doing something I haven't done in years. I've been doing someting I find perverse, something that can rot your mind and soul.

I've been watching television. As much as a couple of hours a day! Sure, it's mostly the History Channel or History International or the Science Channel or similar things, but it's still television. And there are commercials, which I mute.

But I've learned things. Not so much from the programs, but from the commercials.

I've learned that the child who sits on the lap of the guy in the ionic breeze commercial must be either a fake or drugged. The kid just sits there, sort of looking at the camera, while the adult drones on.

And I've learned that women only like men with full, rich, heads of hair and that men who achieve this by using certain patent medicines are going to reproduce and men without such hair will never get a chance to mate. Even if you're Isaac Newton, Stephen Hawking, and Albert Einstein all rolled into one you'll never pass on your genes if you have thinning hair.

And I've learned that you can drive a car or truck to the top of Devil's Tower or someplace that looks a lot like it. I mean, you see somebody driving through mud and swamps and then the vehicle is on top of some high peak so somebody had to drive it there, even though the sides are at least 90 degrees to the ground far below.

I've learned how important it is to advertise your programs on your own channel. Now, I'd think that you'd want to attract viewers so you'd advertise on some other channel, but I guess I'm wrong.

And medicines. There are medicines that can do everything and probably bring you back from the dead as well. Your erectile dysfunction, heart disease, high chlorestrol, post-menopausal ostoeporosis, bad breath, acid reflux, and back pain will all be cured by one pill (which has rare side effect such as thinning hair, projectile diarrhea, irrepressible vomiting, hallucinations, sexual dysfunction, priapism, heart attacks, death, and flatulence). See your doctor or health professional, available by prescription only, call for a coupon good for your first month's supply.

Boy oh boy, I sure have learned a lot from television. For one thing, I've learned that Newton Baker was right -- it's still a vast wasteland.

Or some baritone aria, perhaps verde.

A green baritone aria? Do you mean that it is ecologically friendly? Or that it's Irish -- perhaps something from "O'Ida" or "Johnson's Motor Car Men" or "The Barber of Coot Hill"? If the sheet music for the aria was printed on green paper it could be hard to read, much less sing, but it could be done. Or do you mean that the music that it sung is itself green -- and if so, how do you tell what color it is?

I thought that was a racy volkswagen. Perhaps green.

Or some baritone aria, perhaps verde.

Or a metaphysical theory, perhaps vrai.

Or some thin screen between Self and Eternity, peered through darkly, perhaps verre.

Aye, verrily.

I suppose I should have mentioned that the guillotine has a normal-sized lunette and that's a lot bigger than your normal-sized cigar. Long ago the Legion began rolling their own cigars, which are the thickness of the average French neck and made from the finest Orofino wrappers and Potosi Gulch leaf. The only person who ever smoked one alone was Stretch-Mouth Missoula, who was named after the town in Montana where her mother gave birth to her during the family's sudden departure after the unexpected death of Henry Plummer. Anyway, the Legion cigars are usually smoked by eight or ten people all at once; it's one of the most disgusting sights you can imagine.

One of the many advantages of Photoshop. Tweaking white balance is one of the simpler ways to make things look better. Of course, with digitial, you can have set the colour bias for the conditions anyway. It's the fate of photographers though. You're never quite happy with your own work.

BTW, did you know that if you change the N dimension setting on your guillotine, you can use it to chop the middle off the cigars instaed. Unfortunatly, the symbols needed to explain the mathematics behind this are not html freindly*, so I will leave it as a mystery as to how it works....

It's a lousy picture. The photographer used the wrong film; I specified Ektachrome because the blue-green bias is best in my opinion for outdoor work, but he insisted on...anyway, he shan't be needing any film in the future.

By the way, I use pure organic composting for fertilizer.

Speaking of the Legion, have I ever mentioned that after WW1 one of the old codgers who'd fought in France "liberated" a working guillotine from the prison at Pissoir-Sur-Merde? It's kept in the Legion Hovel, of course, and is usually used to cut the ends off of cigars.

And an open university couse.....
