My light saber is in the shop. The photon accumulator/compactor blew out. I'll just bring my white bronze sword instead. It's non-ferrous.

But, what about the iron in my blood? I'll be damned if I'm going to drain off my hemoglobin just for ride in Amos' scout ship .

Do you expect trouble? Is that why you are telling Rapaire to pack his light Saber? Is there gonna be combat?

Rapaire:

Got the scout vessel. Am en route to pick you up. No ferrous metal objects, and pack light.

Regards,

Amos

Honestly? I've never heard of it. That being the case, I never downloaded it. Even if I had heard of it I wouldn't download it. I will never be a slave to popular culture! Never! I am free! I am not now, and never have been, a member of the popular culture! Except for my Davy Crockett cooonskin cap back in the '50s, of course. And my Nehru jacket. And my peace buttons. And my pet rock. And my Cabbage Patch doll collection. And the Beanie Babies. But otherwise I am and have always been totally free of popular culture, except for Roy Rogers stuff. A total and complete waste, that's popular culture, and I for one am damned glad that I'm not part of it!

So there.

I have just recived the curse of Douglas Adams. I was offered no choice but to install starship titanic. Utterly confusing starts to come close. Like playing chess in the dark, using poker chips for pieces!

Total change of subject--look at this beauty. They just discovered it in Guatemala. 2000+ years old.

You want a fun evening? Here's how to have a fun evening!

Get a large white (yellow or orange is even better) but light plastic trash bag. Tie four lightweight wires about 3 feet long equidistant around the opening. Bring the wire together together and fasten a highway flare at this point.

Now, light the flare and hold the trash bag to the the hot air from the flare fills the trash bag and sends the whole thing aloft. UFO reports will abound!

(Don't do this over populated areas or when there is a fire danger.)

Here are some photos for planning your first trip in that scout vessel. This is the place to find a good parking place for it. (The site has a few popups, but most of them were blocked by my firewall).

Giok:

That's not the context I had in mind; I meant one of those silver streamlined things that swoops in and out of the atmosphere at near-light speeds, turning on a dime and baffling the rubes for miles in all directions. I would call that a fun evening out, me.

I just meant I can't send viruses through my monitor, silly!

As for those UFO drivers, man, I dunno. I've seen a lot of testimony about these black ops, higher-than-top-secret relations with the aliens. It's a wonderful forest of partial information and bits of fact with too many bits missing. If I were retired Imight spend some time trying to make some sense of it all; as it is, it stays firmly in the bullpen.

I would dearly love to get my hands on an intact scout vessel. That would be a trip worth taking.

Sigh....

No Cadillacs, but I did see a Hudson Terraplane, it had a calendar in the rear window, with a circle round the 14th of February, looks like he might be heading for Chicago.
Do we know anybody in Chicago? Could be a musician, 'cos it had a couple of violin cases on the rear seat too.
Guy said he worked in air conditioning and was going to Chicago to do a bit of ventilation. That should be nice then!

Where you working -- Area 51?

Are there a series of LEO satellites hovering over your head, taking pictures of everything (and I mean everything) you do, indoors and out? Are there black, early-model Cadillacs and men in black suits nearby? Have you awakened feeling both violated and that certain parts are missing and/or probed? Are there periods of your memory that are simply missing and your have no explanation as to why? Do dogs and cats incessantly stare at you and growl, but run when you approach them? Are police officers giving you strange looks? Are you subject to unexplained dizzy spells? Do you see penguins and polar bears in your back yard? Is your imaginary childhood friend Gawain visiting you again? Are you now or have you ever been?

If you can honestly answer "NO!" to fewer than one of these questions you have nothing to worry about.

Well, I am done with this flu stuff. It was fun for a while but now it is boring. I am back at woik, aside from an occasional dizzy spell, doing right in the world.

I did catch up on my sleep, though. Almost 72 hours straight, with minor interruptions.

As for spreading viruses, I couldn't even try; I am closely monitored.

You want to melt the poler ice cap? Easy. Well for the South Pole anyway it's easy. Here's what you do: make a flippin' BIG gasoline spill in the South Atlantick area. Let it all run down to the south end at the bottom part of the globe, eh? Then light it. The fire will melt the whole flippin' ice cap or at least most of it. I read that there is ground under there. When the fire goes out the ground will be exposed and there will be 85 billion barbecued penguins layin' all over. Package 'em up quick and use 'em to fight world hunger! This could change the whole flippin' world as we know it.

You heard it here. My idea. Don't steal it, eh? I am seekin' copyright as we, like, speak. Or a patent.

I am so flippin' sharp sometimes that I scare myself, eh?

What Giok really means, as I'm sure you know, is don't breathe in this direction.

Although, as this was over two hours ago, if you didn't realise this point, it may be too late.

Plus, a good virus checker will stop your flu germs fitting down the phone line. It is your duty to everyone to get one!

No, I won't sell my swords to help pay the bills! Instead, I'll use them to obtain ill-gotten loot from gentlemen and ladies of the highway!

Yes!

I shall become the highwayman that robs the highwaymen (and highwaywomen)! After all, why should I do ALL the work and take ALL the risks? This way I don't have to rob a whole bunch at once, but just one person!

Pretty smart, huh?

Been repairing a friend's computer. She's back online now so she can conduct her job search and check her email. She was experimenting with making a bread pudding (hadn't made it before) as I worked. I stood up to look into the kitchen and was astonished to see the pan filled with bread. At my urgings we adjusted the ingredients (only 2 cups of bread, not 8) and adjusted it to accomodate the extra eggs. Too much nutmeg it in, but other than that it was delicious. The pecans were a nice idea. I had a bowl of pudding before we all headed out after and afternoon well-spent.

Hope you're feeling better Amos. Poor little moonglow was down for the count for an entire week (fever, achiness).

Them highwaymen sure as heck didn't use any of MY swords, no matter WHAT Bunn says! They might have carried rapiers, true, but during the 18th Century it's not probable since by then the smallsword had pretty much replaced the rapier. The rapier was popular during Shakespeare's time:

Merchat: V, 1: Here, stand behind this bulk; straight will he come: Wear thy good rapier bare, and put it home.

Merry Wives: II, III: By gar, de herring is no dead so as I vill kill him. Take your rapier, Jack; I vill tell you how I vill kill him.

Measure: IV, II: Then have we young Dizy, and young Master Deep-vow, and Master Copperspur, and Master Starve-lackey the rapier and dagger man....

Henry V, II, I: If you grow foul with me, Pistol, I will scour you with my rapier

LLL, I, II: O well-knit Samson! strong-jointed Samson! I do excel thee in my rapier as much as thou didst me in carrying gates.

R&J, I, V: Fetch me my rapier, boy. (Tybalt had a sort of caddy, I guess, to carry his rapier-bag.)

Hamlet, V, II: Ham. What is his weapon? Osr. Rapier and dagger. Ham. That is two of his weapons; but well.

And I can give you about twenty more such references. But during the 18th Century the rapier had given way to the smallsword (or, as it is also known, the courtsword).

Which is not to say that rapiers were completely passe -- just that gentlemen highwaymen did not, in all probability, use them. They simply weren't FASHION, my dear!

Only thing a blunderbuss would be good for here is to throw on the fire to keep us warm. Texas is unaccustomed to 12 degree nights, especially when last Saturday it reached 90. No opportunity to acclimate to the season when it does that in the space of five days.

My poor outside doggies have been cooped up in the house, their only entertainment to occasionally harass the cats. Mom, make Amos share some of his warm weather please, so my dogs can go back outside. They're so sweet, but they fart all of the time and it gets just a tad close in my office when they insist on sleeping beside my chair.

If I only had a blunderbuss, I could be a REAL dashing highwayman. One who would rob the men, kiss the ladies, and give all the money I stole to the poor, who would then honor me with flowers as I was taken to be turned off at Tyburn. And a horse. A horse would facilitate the chases across the countryside under the full moon to the Inn where the innkeeper's daughter fair would be pining for me and where her father would betray me to the King (see Tyburn, above) and later realize that by doing so he had driven his only daughter, the joy of the his heart, to cast herself from the bridge and into the swirling maelstrom below at the same time I was hung at Tyburn.

Sorry, never watched Dr. Who. In fact, I very rarely watch much television at all -- just the weather and the evening news (local and national) while eating dinner (and usually the TV is muted until something that appears interesting shows on the screen). Don't go to movies very much, either -- last one I saw was the second Harry Potter flick. I have the third HP movie on DVD, but I haven't bothered to set up the DVD player I bought two years ago yet.

I do have my small sword, though. It's on the wall, along with a percussion-lock .45 Kentucky-style pistol, all set for my "Stand and Deliver!" gig to start. I even have a tricorn hat for it!

You don't know what a dalek is! you poor, deprived soul! Daleks

From Wikpedia.

The Daleks (pronounced "DAH-lecks" or "DAH-licks"; IPA: 'dɑːlɛks) are a fictional extraterrestrial race of mutants from the British science fiction television series Doctor Who. The mutated descendants of the Kaled people (originally refered to as "Dals") of the planet Skaro, they travel around in tank-like mechanical casings, a ruthless race bent on universal conquest and domination, utterly without pity, compassion or remorse. They are also, collectively, the greatest alien adversaries of the Time Lord known as the Doctor. Their most infamous catchphrase is "EX-TER-MIN-ATE!", with each syllable individually screeched in a frantic electronic voice (download sample). Other common utterances include "I (or WE) OBEY!" to any command given by a superior.

The Daleks were created by writer Terry Nation and BBC designer Raymond Cusick and were first introduced in December 1963 in the second Doctor Who serial. They became an immediate hit with the viewing audience, featuring in many subsequent serials. They have become synonymous with Doctor Who and their behaviour and catchphrases are part of British popular culture.

The word "Dalek" has entered the Oxford English Dictionary and other major dictionaries (the Collins Dictionary defines it rather broadly as "any of a set of fictional robot-like creations that are aggressive, mobile, and produce rasping staccato speech"). It is also a trademark, having first been registered by the BBC in 1964 to protect its lucrative range of Dalek merchandise.

The term is sometimes used in a metaphorical sense to describe people, usually figures in authority, who act like robots unable to break their programming. John Birt, the controversial ex-Director-General of the BBC, was called a "croak-voiced Dalek" by playwright Dennis Potter in August 1993. The Daleks even appeared on a postage stamp celebrating British popular culture in 1999, photographed by Lord Snowdon.
