Of course Amos feels like a zombie. Amos IS a zombie. His official title is "Old Zombie Grandpappy Amos" or "OZGA" for short (with a short A sound).

The baby on the other hand is NOT a zombie. Babies are nice, even when they wet on you or worse. Babies are hope.

And you, Sir Booques, are completely sans enfants thereby. A zombie, moi? Hey mon, I tink you are needing exemplary edification.

After the quark-gluon plasma filled the universe for a few millionths of a second after the big bang, it was over 13 billion years until experimenters managed to recreate the extraordinarily hot, dense medium on Earth. The JET Collaboration, a team from six universities and three national laboratories led by Berkeley Lab's Nuclear Science Division, is now developing a new and highly detailed theoretical picture of this unique state of the early universe.

The Department of Energy's Office of Nuclear Physics recently named Berkeley Lab's Nuclear Science Division to lead a nine-institution collaboration investigating the "Quantitative Jet and Electromagnetic Tomography of Extreme Phases of Matter in Heavy-Ion Collisions" - JET, for short.

... The quark-gluon plasma filled the Universe a few millionths of a second after the big bang but instantly vanished, condensing into the protons and neutrons and other particles from which the present Universe descended.

Some 13.7 billion years later, experimenters recreated the quark-gluon plasma on Earth, using the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The first heavy-ion collisions occurred at RHIC in 2000, but confirming the occurence of the quark-gluon plasma in these events took several more years of data collection and analysis.

Freeing the quarks

Quarks come in three different "colors," and it takes three quarks to build a proton or a neutron; as carriers of the color charge, an aspect of the strong nuclear interaction, gluons literally glue the quarks together.

Under ordinary conditions neither quarks nor gluons are ever free. The farther apart they get, the stronger the force between them. Because mass and energy are interchangeable, as described by Einstein's E=Mc2, eventually the energy that would be needed to separate them goes into creating new bound quarks instead.

RHIC was designed to collide heavy nuclei (as heavy as gold, whose nucleus consists of 79 protons and 118 neutrons) at energies so high that during the near-light-speed collisions, conditions cease to be anything like ordinary. Dense, hot fireballs blossom in the collisions, forming a plasma in which neither quarks nor gluons are bound together; instead they move independently with almost complete freedom.

Above suggests we should be very careful around the duckdog, maybe spell words out instead of saying them, that sort of thing.

You must remember, Amos, that my impression of you rises entirely from reading your posts... ;-)

(Rapaire's numerous comments about you are quite amusing, but they have had little bearing on my understanding of who or what you are.)

oh heck...'Spaw and "The boys" achieved quark-gluon plasma years ago - and theirs hangs around a lot longer then a few billionsth of a second. In fact, it is incredibly hard to get rid of.

LH:

No, monsieur. I am delighted to take responsibility for writing my posts, but as to the dubious product you contrive to draw from them, I am afraid it is entirely your own invention.

I'm just pointing out that no one else is interfering in the process, and that if you had decided to restrain yourself and never post here, I would have no opinion at all about you.

Therefore, it's your fault. ;-)

COnversely, if you had taken care of business and never decided to fritter away your time reading this forum, you could have saved yourself all the anxiety your reading here has brought you.

Alternatively, had you decided to tune in to the clear-sighted brilliance, excoriating penchant wit, profound metaphysical insight and deft linguistic hop-scotchery of my posts, you would have celebrated them rather than turning them into a source of angst and antagonism on your own part. Voila.

You first point is well taken. Indeed, it was a dark day when a musical friend of mine living in my own town of Orillia innocently drew my attention to Mudcat Cafe, thus luring me into an inescapable tarpit of time-wasting twaddle that would consume mega-parcels of my mental existence and render my life into a sorry shambles!

This friend, a former member of Mudcat Cafe, left it in a fury over "those f**king Americans" around about the time the USA made its decision to start bombing Afghanistan. She has never returned. My reaction to that war was rather similar to hers, but I stayed. (sigh)

And here I am to this day. Trapped like a fly on a fly strip.

As to your 2nd point... Ha! Very droll. I think that when it comes to self-admiration you have no rivals, except possibly for Shane McBride and Rapaire. Shane's self-admiration arises out of deep insecurity. Deep down he knows he's a major loser, but he covers it over with a show of bravado. I'm not sure what yours and/or Rapaire's arises out of.

Besides, the vast majority of people on the Mudcat had no part in the initial attacks on Afghanistan, voted for the other guy, and a reasonable percentage of them are not even Americans. Quod propter hoc demonstratrarum vincet?

Quinque sine ceres in pace redundus, as the old saying goes. Everyone is in error in their own special way.

I have just spent an hour and a half listening to a most fascinating discussion at the large hall of the Encinitas Library, by a panel of ex-Peace Corps volunteers, describing their various experiences in Russia, the Ukraine, South Africa and Jamaica. A recruiter from the Corps conducted the presentation which was most intriguing. No upper age limit, all expenses paid, crude living conditions, force-fed language lessons, High Virtue beliefs, good medical care--the Peace Corps has it all. An adventure worth having. We are contemplating it as one path after retirement.

Tomorrow we will go to the home of The Oceanographer to watch the San Diego Chargers out-pass, out-run, out-block and out-kick the New York Jets for the championship of the National Football League, leading to their inevitable victory at the Super Bowl.

A curse upon the weary bleary minds of Epson.

I have just persisted for four solid hours debugging the Print to CD function of my little R800. I have succeeded. Buried within the arcane wisdom of the leprechauns, trolls, geeks and weirdoes at Epson there is a secret routine for making the R800 printer behave when asked to print to a CD. After due tribulation and bloody finger-pads and a great loss of temper being confronted with meaningless, non-relevant, non-helpful error messages from Epson, I have found the Golden Key, buried in an obscure online forum somewhere, and have conquered the beast and made it print directly to / on a CD. A thousand trolls and dwarves fled in fear and loathing when I raised the Golden Key high over my head and sent my newly printed CD flashing among them, lopping off heads and fingers on every hand.

But once I got that out of the way I am pretty happy with the result.

Oh, for those who wish to know the arcane formula and Spelle to COnquere Ye R800 CD:

Printing to a CD on the R800 from 10.4.2 does work - they key is to set up the Stylus Photo R800(Manual Feed) printer - which used to be more straight forward before 10.4. Just spent three hours figuring this out. Here's how to do it:

To build the Stylus Photo R800 in 10.4 you need to directly connect via USB to the printer (won't work over an Airport).

Now open Printer Setup Utility. The Epson R800 printer will show up immediately in the list before you ? DO NOT ADD THAT PRINTER!!!!! Click "More Printers" and select "Epson USB".

The Epson R800 Printer will show up again and, much more importantly, there is a "Page Setup" pulldown on this dialog that will allow you to select "Manual Feed". Select it.

Now you can click "Add" and there will be a "Stylus Photo R800 (Manual Feed)" printer in the printer list.

When printing to CD:

1. Load the caddy with the blank CD.
2. Move the output tray of the R800 to its upper position by lifting it and settling it into its upper slot.
3. Press the page feed key (icon is a sheet of paper going into the trash).
4. When the caddy has completely finished positioning itself, go to your CD Label program such as Epson Print CD or Discus.
5. Make sure Page Setup is set for A4 paper.
6. Select File==>Print and choose the R800 Manual Feed printer.
7. Click Print.

The instructions in the manual will work now that this printer has been set up correctly.

I hasten to state this degree of technical foofaraw is NOT typical of Mac, and is attributable to Epson.

What a shame! And I was going to tell Rapaire about the song I heard on our public radio station's Sunday acoustic music program today. It was bluegrassish (though Bill Monroe would never call it "bluegrass") with the usual 'grass intrumentation of guitar, banjo, mandolin and Dobro PLUS A TRUMPET! It was cool! A Dobro and trumpet together in the same band, and it WORKED! Who'da thunk it?

Too bad Rapaire couldn't have hung on for a few more hours so he could have gone to the other side knowing that Bee-dubya finally heard some trumpet music that didn't suck.

Just to show you how much I care, at my own personal expense I'm going to have a guy named "Big Tony" DiAnnunzio and a couple of his friends come over from Toronto to "visit" you. You'll like Tony: he too has spent some time in some of the better prisons of Canada and the US. In fact, he liked Canada so much the US sent him back there! Have fun!!

Dammit, the PostePixie bit me. I was going to ask whether anyone sees a bit of irony in the contradistinction: I rub out an imaginary character of LH's and am assailed for my moral turpitude; Little Hawk has one of his imaginary characters try to rub out one of our real authors here at Mom's, and a tired silence is heard throughout the mansions of my Mom's house.

Some kind of double standard, I wot.

Chongo has a new pastime. He printed off a copy of one of Amos's pictures from the member photos section and has put it up on his office wall. He leans back in his chair, smokes a cigar, drinks his whisky, and lazily throws darts at the picture while waiting for a client to arrive with a case to solve. He awards himself another shot of whisky each time he manages to put a dart right in the end of Amos's nose.

Given that Chongo is not only a mere figmentof LH's overheated imagining, but is also reported to be deceased as a result of reckless incursions into IED territory outside of Kandahar, it strikes me that this ad hominem fantasy about darts is somewhat of a desperate solution.

And anyway, he got the idea from Chinga who uses a booking photo of Chongo (from the Milwaukee PD mug files) for the same purpose, except she uses stilletto shivs.

And you can mention to Ol' Shame that Big Tony called. He's on his way with a couple of his friends, Hammer and Grinder. I don't know them so I don't know why they are called by those names (but I can guess).

Big Tony said "dis job is free fer youse cuz youse is a swell guy." I tried to argue with him and pay regular rates but he said, "Nah, I been gittin' itchy ta do somethin' and this'll do it. Ya want his ears or anything for, like, a sovvynear? It'd make Grinder feel useful."

I declined, but told him they could keep anything they wanted.

It was great to talk with Big Tony again. Hadn't spoken with him since he did that spell in Ossining. Nice guy, Tony.

I am sure, sir, that playing with your own piece sis a continuous source of delight to you. But that does not address the point at all. Never mind.

We are almost 75% of the way to the Great 34,000 mark.

I started another daring, brawny, big-muscled ballad about this chase, but they gather only sneering remarks, chilled disdain, or cool indifference, despite the sweat, art, and inspiration that goes into them. I will leave the huge and frightening dogs curled up in their snowy beds, therefore, ignoring Ma's cracking whip and urgent strident demands for speed. Go with the flow, man, and stay warm.

Meanwhile, the Evil Sprites of Winter have just ruined my week with great swaths of dark gray rain sheeting down in every corner of the county. This is really unacceptable. I think I will move to Southern California.
