And a keen appreciation of subtlety...which is one of the reasons why most women really like Leonard Cohen's music.

Women have a simply vast amount of niceties. I have known this instinctively since I was old enough to walk, and it's one among several reasons that I hold women in such high esteem.

That was a very general use of the word. Anatomically I think only women have "niceties."

Spaw is the only one around here who has ever claimed to have one of those.

"the niceties"? Oh, I wouldn't touch that with a ten foot pole.

Fry up the bacon and drop bread into the toaster! Gnu, it's time for the BLTs! My tomatoes were finished several weeks ago.

Amos in a loincloth - hmmmm. I think covering the niceties is probably his best bet if he wants to sustain forward momentum in his travels.

Oh, stop yer weenin! It was over 8 hours from fallin off the page. I keep an eye out (when I can). All I had to post about was all the damn tomatoes... wanna a tomatoe? Picked about five pounds of Early Girl and Cherry 100 today... and some sugar snap peas. Yes, I know my paltry garden is "slight" but, as a novice and as someone who leads a life as exciting as a libraian working three shifts a day, why would i bitch and moan about tomatoes while this thread still had more than an 8 hour shift on the page?

There. Boring enough? Maybe just "freeresh" next time?

Here... take a f***in tamata eh?

I agree with Rap- this thread should NOT be at the bottom with its attendant risks...

Here I am, shanghaied as a foretopm'n on the the good ship "Floating Hell" and find Mom COMPLETELY at the bottom of the list! Does no one but me care? At least I was able to get this one message out before the bos'n uses the cat on me for "bein' a landlubber". This shows how much I care about Mom! Well, they're coming now to stretch me over the cannon.

I started a cleanup of my office/apartment 8 years ago, figgerin' I'd tackle it a bit at a time so as not to wear myself out. Operation Enduring Liberation, I called it. It ain't done yet. Matter of fact, I think it's provin' to be about as winnable a proposition as the USA presence in Afghanistan!

I am plannin' to make a strategic disengagement and a complete cessation of all further cleanin' attempts in 2014, declare "victory", and hope no one notices that the place looks a hell of a lot worse than it did when I started the old "cleanup" campaign.

That's the kind of weather where Chongo sits morosely in his walk-up office/apartment, trying to keep cool with an electric fan and a cold drink. His air conditioner hasn't worked in years, despite being threatened with summary execution by .45 cal if it doesn't shape up. He sweats and glowers. His apartment gets hot as hell on sunny days, because it's on the 3rd floor and the roof is not well insulated in the least. Eventually he can't take it any more and he heads down to street level and goes off to Murphy's Bar for a few cold ones.

I don't think I've actually ever seen ocotillo in Texas. It's a Sonoran Desert plant, Texas is Chihuahua Desert (and prairie that is hot-as-hell).

There have been several Keystone Kops kinds of forays across the border over the years, not just from Texas. There was one from Arizona that went badly (I'd have to look it up, I think it was pre-Gadsden, 1853.)

It's only forecast to be 98 today! I do love it when cold fronts pass through.

Hmm. Amusing! They sound like a bunch of disorganized pirates and freebooters rather than anything that could have been dignified with the term "military expedition". Mexico may well have been better off without them....though not without Texas itself, which was a valuable piece of territory.

You COULD think of the Ammon Carter Museum, the Brazos River, the Battle of San Jacinto, the XIT Ranch, Sam Houston, Mollie Ivins, Bill Pickett, Quanah Parker, Carol Burnett, Babe Didrikson Zaharias, Buddy Holly, Tex Ritter, ZZ Top, the Houston Space Flight Center, Fort Hood, the Luke Short/Jim Courtwright gunfight, and of course the Snively Expedition.

There's more to Texas than gunfights, cattle, the Dallas Cowboys, mesquite, dust, chaparral, ocotilla, Republicans, capital punishment, and did I mention dust?

Besides, SRS lives there.

The Battle of the Alamo (February 23 ? March 6, 1836) was a pivotal event in the Texas Revolution. Following a 13-day siege, Mexican troops under President General Antonio López de Santa Anna launched an assault on the Alamo Mission near San Antonio de Béxar (modern-day San Antonio, Texas, USA). All of the Texian defenders were killed. Santa Anna's perceived cruelty during the battle inspired many Texians?both Texas settlers and adventurers from the United States?to join the Texian Army. Buoyed by a desire for revenge, the Texians defeated the Mexican Army at the Battle of San Jacinto, on April 21, 1836, ending the revolution.

Here's a link to the Amazon website for the book. You can "look inside". Suffice to say that it contains a nifty murder mystery, a falling jet engine, bear attacks, a shootout in the roadhouse parking lot, an attempted shooting at the airstrip by a Wronged Wife, and it's all funnier than a rubber crutch.

Texas. When I think of Texas I think of the Alamo, "wetbacks", John Kennedy's unfortunate end, dust, desert, chiggers, Lyndon Johnson, guns, cowboys, Dallas, and George Bush.

Ugh!

However, I also think of Austin and Willy Nelson. Great music there.

And as gnu has already remarked, well said, Amos.

One advantage of living alone, being a recluse outside of work, and also enjoying messing about the kitchen is that I can double dip to my heart's content when it comes to tortilla chips and guacamole or salsa.

Maggie ran off with a beautiful young woman who loves her to pieces and will be back when I return from my peregrinations. I hope she remembers me.

Meanwhile I have loaded up my old G4 laptop with all the back documents I have half-completed in my writing life and will endeavor to push forward with in between singing for my assorted suppers down the eastern seaboard.

I didn't think to snap a photo of the front end loaders and the machine with the arm and cable and nifty ring they were using to lift the large metal pipes off of the truck. But I did watch them work from the kitchen window for a few minutes.

I have lots of great photos from out on my brother's boat. I'll pull out the camera cards and load them into the computer this weekend. I have a nifty little ultrabook now that went on its maiden voyage this trip, and Moonglow and I sat, heads together, viewing photos on the plane. Soon after takeoff on the way home I snapped a couple of photos of Mt. Rainier and she complained that I wasn't fast enough to also get the photo with her camera when I held it up to my window (her phone camera has a side button, mine has a virtual button, and I mistakenly pushed something I thought was a virtual button and, alas, the moment was lost before the camera was reset.) So I loaded my card into the computer, attached my phone cable, and handed it to her and she loaded the Mt. Rainier photos into her camera. The things we can do with cards and cables these days.

Ah, la tristesse du passage.

I will be making an expedition East starting Tuesday and will be gallivanting hither and yon down the Right Coast and expect I'll have a few similar final meetings, given how rarely I get out that way (the Northeast).

This part of our lives is richly spiced with the slow-growing seeds of maturity and insight, but the edge of the radar makes its presence felt more and more often, with aches and pains, and the decline of close friends, and departures unexpected. Who would have thought Karen Black was going to jump ship so early? Just for one example.

The rest of us carry on trimming sail, trying to choose a decent course, heaving and squalling and wrestling with a rudder that seems much heavier than it used to, but we keep on sailing, fair or foul. If one of us gets washed overboard, lost from sight, once in a watch, we suck up the misery of it and go below until four bells calls us back to duty.

Fortunately, the seas so far are relatively mild--no more than a Force Four -- and we manage short-handed, as we must. God save us when the gales arrive.

MOM! I'm home!

I was back yesterday but I was very tired. Lots of naps, and took the truck into the shop. I had to fill the radiator twice to get home from the airport (the plane landed at 11:20pm, so it was already a not-such-great-time-of-day for anything).

I was walkabout to the Pacific Northwest for a family wedding. I didn't say much before-hand, but I dropped hints. Like the post below when I talked about writing from my brother's house at the beach. I am in land-locked Fort Worth most of the time but my brother lives on Puget Sound.

I'll go back and read that otter story.

Our last night in Washington was at a friend's house - in the morning she had to go out and shoo away all of the heavy equipment at the end of her driveway so I could leave for the airport. Putting in new water lines is noisy messy business. On my way to the airport I stopped to see Deckman (Bob Nelson) who was an old friend of my father's. That was delightful, but then we had an intense hour or so passing through Seattle traffic (took a detour down the old highway - Aurora - and through downtown city streets and out the other side by taking Olive.)

My son and I saw an old friend up in the mountains - and after a couple of sentences out of her mouth I realized that she has Alzheimers. Her grandson lives with her now. And another visit with a friend I've known all of my life - she turned 99 this summer and is still a hoot. But this trip may have been my last goodbyes with those two friends.

The "oil patch" he worked on was in Iran, where he was a secret operative for MI5.7(b), a little known Canadian agency charged with sending agents into Iranian oil patches as designated loiterers. They don't do anything much. Speak to him in Farsi and you'll blow his cover.
