Oh, Rapaire, what an opening (as it were. . .)

Buttocks

Buttocks

Buttocks

Buttocks

Grotesque buttocks

Seems a suitable time to post this old chestnut:

To His Coy Mistress

HAD we but world enough, and time,
This coyness, Lady, were no crime
We would sit down and think which way
To walk and pass our long love's day.
Thou by the Indian Ganges' side          5
Shouldst rubies find: I by the tide
Of Humber would complain. I would
Love you ten years before the Flood,
And you should, if you please, refuse
Till the conversion of the Jews.   10
My vegetable love should grow
Vaster than empires, and more slow;
An hundred years should go to praise
Thine eyes and on thy forehead gaze;
Two hundred to adore each breast,   15
But thirty thousand to the rest;
An age at least to every part,
And the last age should show your heart.
For, Lady, you deserve this state,
Nor would I love at lower rate.   20
But at my back I always hear
Time's wingèd chariot hurrying near;
And yonder all before us lie
Deserts of vast eternity.
Thy beauty shall no more be found,   25
Nor, in thy marble vault, shall sound
My echoing song: then worms shall try
That long preserved virginity,
And your quaint honour turn to dust,
And into ashes all my lust:   30
The grave 's a fine and private place,
But none, I think, do there embrace.
Now therefore, while the youthful hue
Sits on thy skin like morning dew,
And while thy willing soul transpires   35
At every pore with instant fires,
Now let us sport us while we may,
And now, like amorous birds of prey,
Rather at once our time devour
Than languish in his slow-chapt power.   40
Let us roll all our strength and all
Our sweetness up into one ball,
And tear our pleasures with rough strife
Thorough the iron gates of life:
Thus, though we cannot make our sun   45
Stand still, yet we will make him run.

"Marvel"ous, no?

Hard to find good poetry about butts. So many other things seem to turn up in the search.

Bleh. If you putt "ass" in the search it's even worse.

This trivial lust of numbers! How
Can ever mind explain it now?
How justify, how rationalize
This blinding of the soul-owned eyes
To turn the lust of vibrant living
Into a rusty, numbered giving
Of little for but little thunder
Clouded in some mere giant number!
What hollow acclaim!
What snippet-love!
That all the gifts of saints above
Should cast off be, thrown out to winter
In quest of an idle integer.
Now will the days by numbers ruled
Turn on your heart and with a cruel
Admonishment of hurrying time
Reduce it to a numbered line.
Avoid, oh flee! This awful fate,
I pray thee e'er it is too late!
And think of the name on this poor slate,
With best regards,
8-0-0-8.

Well, Amos, at least your poem wasn't about mindless number poaching, and didn't end with the line
*daylia* eat my shorts!

You could have added a reference to a butt and resolve the problem I was having in finding a good poem admiring that moon-like anatomical feature.

Why today? Why does everything have to happen on the same day?

I spend all day on my feet try to recruit more people to the society, in a room with so many other people doing the same, and all the freshers we're trying to recruit so it's 90 decibels all day, and then you get home and find there's water coming through the ceiling of the people underneath.

There are a few problems you can't solve just by sitting and thinking.

RESEARCHERS RECOVER TYPED TEXT USING AUDIO RECORDING OF KEYSTROKES, September 15
A new security threat revealed by computer scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, may be enough to drive some people away from their computer keyboards and back to pen and paper. The researchers show that a simple audio recording of those keyboard clicks can betray the text you just entered, from passwords to secret love notes.
Full story at http://www.physorg.com/news6541.html
This leads to an explanation as to how the MOAB was able to infiltrate Google with its telling phrase about the flush of a distant toilet.

But more importantly, to all BSers, is this telling issue:

WHY DO WE RESIDE IN A THREE-DIMENSIONAL UNIVERSE? Andreas Karch
(University of Washington) and Lisa Randall (Harvard) propose to
explain why we live in three dimensions and not some other number.
Currently, the popular string theory of matter holds that our
universe is actually ten-dimensional, including, first of all, the
dimension of time, then the three "large" dimensions we perceive as
"space," plus six more dimensions that are difficult to see, perhaps
because they are hidden in some way. There is reason to believe,
therefore, that our common 3D space is but a portion of some
membrane or "brane" within a much more complicated
higher-dimensional reality. Specifically, Karch and Randall
address themselves to the behavior of three-dimensional force laws,
including the force of gravity. Having several dimensions rolled up
is one way to explain why gravity if so weak. Another view,
pioneered by Randall and Raman Sundrum, holds that if gravity is
localized on a 3D defect in the larger multi-dimensional universe
and if spacetime is sufficiently warped, then the other spatial
dimensions might be large after all. But why is our "local gravity"
apparently a 3D defect in a 10D universe? Why not a 4D defect or
some other dimensionality? In the present paper, Karch
(karch@feynman.phys.washington.edu) and Randall show that the cosmic
evolution of the 10D universe, involving a steady dilution of
matter, results in spacetime being populated chiefly by 3D and 7D
branes. Several versions of string theories require the existence
of 3D and 7D branes; indeed, the particles that constitute
matter---such as quarks and electrons---can be considered open
strings with one end planted on a 3D brane and the other end planted
on a 7D brane. (Karch and Randall, Physical Review Letters,
upcoming article )

There ya go, elegant, incisive, succinct, mathematically coherent and humanly incomprehensible!

My mother told me, she said, "Son, you keep living in that 3-D or maybe 4-D universe you were brought up in. Don't you go flittin' off to some 2-D or 37-D thing. You stay right here like your grand-daddy did and his grand-daddy before him. Ain't nobody who ever lived in one of them other universes ever amounted to a hill of beans, and there wasn't one of 'em worth the powder it'd take to blow 'em to hell. You take your Uncle Nebo, for example. That drunken, lazy, good-for-nothing lout used to lay around with the hogs and then one day he got the idea that if he was in a 17-D universe things would be better. Well, he figured out how to do it and he went off one afternoon and moved into a 17-D universe, and he never had a lick of luck afterwards. When he finally died he was so poor he had to borrow a pot to piss in, and the county ended up buryin' him. So don't you go messin' 'round, you hear me?"

And except for experimentation in college (well, it WAS the '60s) I've done done what my momma told me.

Oops. Sorry. I forgot that momma sometimes got carried away, being as how she was so danged smart and all. She was talkin' 'bout her growin' up:

"Not so was I," quoth Medb; "the High King of Erin himself was my sire, Eocho Fedlech ('the Enduring') son of Finn, by name, who was son of Findoman, son of Finden, son of Findguin, son of Rogen Ruad ('the Red'), son of Rigen, son of Blathacht, son of Beothacht, son of Enna Agnech, son of Oengus Turbech. Of daughters, had he six: Derbriu, Ethne and Ele, Clothru, Mugain and Medb, myself, that was the noblest and seemliest of them.

'Twas I was the goodliest of them in bounty and gift-giving, in riches and treasures. 'Twas I was best of them in battle and strife and combat. 'Twas I that had fifteen hundred royal mercenaries of the sons of aliens exiled from their own land, and as many more of the sons of freemen of the land. And there were ten men with every one of these hirelings, and nine men with every hireling, and eight men with every hireling, and seven men with every hireling, and six men with every hireling, and five men with every hireling, and four men with every hireling, and three men with every hireling, and two men with every hireling, and one hireling with every hireling. These were as a standing household-guard," continued Medb; "hence hath my father bestowed one of the five provinces of Erin upon me, even the province of Cruachan; wherefore 'Medb of Cruachan' am I called.

Men came from Finn son of Ross Ruad ('the Red'), king of Leinster, to seek me for a wife, and I refused him; and from Carbre Niafer ('the Champion') son of Ross Ruad ('the Red'), king of Temair, to woo me, and I refused him; and they came from Conchobar son of Fachtna Fathach ('the Mighty'), king of Ulster, and I refused him in like wise. They came from Eocho Bec ('the Small'), and I went not; for 'tis I that exacted a singular bride-gift, such as no woman before me had ever required of a man of the men of Erin, namely, a husband without avarice, without jealousy, without fear.

Medb, she said, was the oldtime way of sayin' "Esther," which was her name.

Remember when every Wendy's restaurant in the country had identical Formica-covered tabletops covered in a print that consisted of facsimiles of old newspaper advertisements? In among the ads for hoopskirts, buttonhooks and the like was one that simply said "Torpid Liver". That was all.

For a while, it was a mystery to me whether "torpid liver" was a product for sale or an ailment to be cured. So, after reading the words "Torpid Liver" on a Wendy's tabletop for the 357th time I did a little research and found that it was an ailment. At that point I felt extremely slighted because Wendy's had chosen to use only the headline from the advertisement while omitting the rest of the ad copy which doubtlessly extolled the merits of some product that would cure those afflicted with torpid liver and, though I didn't suffer from torpid liver at the time, it wasn't impossible that I might be so afflicted at some time in the future. Did the Wendy's people not realize that lack of the information they had so callously omitted could be a life-or-death matter for some future sufferer of torpid liver?

I would like to say that, in response to Wendy's lack of foresight, I have boycotted their restaurants for years, but it would be a lie. It really didn't make a damned bit of difference.

Speaking of Torpid Liver, Bee-dubya-ell, it appears you aren't the only person who remembers those ads on the tables in Wendy's. In fact, this person named a punk band after them!

Ultimate Punk Band Name

Scott thinks that he has found the ultimate punk band name. Bah! We came up with the ultimate punk band name a long time ago.

Remember when Wendy's used to have tables with those old 1890's catalog ads on them? Never mind if you don't. Trust me.

Anyway, we were chompin' on a double-cheeeeeburgah one day when we saw two phrases that had been accidentally cropped from their ads: torpid liver. artificial limbs.

In a flash, our next band name came to us...

Interesting commentary, Rapaire.

Note the subtle differences between:

Yes.

Yes!

Yes?

and

Yes...

And that's without using all caps, boldface, Italics, colors or any HTML tricks. The possibilities for subtle (and not so subtle) commentary using just that single word are simply astounding!

Now, at this point one would expect to see something like a scrolling multicolored blinking "YES!!!" in the largest font available, but that would be just so predictable, wouldn't it?

It is Sunday morn. It is 34 degrees F. outside. It will get up to 69 degrees F. outside today.

This is a good day for staying inside, 'cause I never felt more like slingin' the booze. But I can't do that. I must don parka and mukluks and fare forth into the clear and sunny (albeit cool) weather. I shall not be stayed by williwaws, chinooks, blizzards, dark of night, golf balls the size of hail stones, molten lava flows, giant locusts with flowing hair and the face of women, or the Five Horseman of the Apocalypse (War, Famine, Plague, Death, and Embarassing Itch). Nay, I shall go into harm's way, and I shall take unto myself the Mission of going to the store for the salad greens and vegetables I did not get yesterday. And I shall do this in the bright sunshine morning, in the full and complete knowledge that with everybody else going to church I shall find a good selection of both food and parking spaces.

And so, go I shall. Farewell, and in the future, if you think of me, know that there is some corner of a foriegn field that is forever England.
