Sure and I didn't hear any commentary. I've found that if you open a window or door a bat (animal, cricket, baseball) will eventually find its way outside. Except for Idaho's Ice Cave bats, which live in volcanic tubes left as the Yellowstone hotspot barfed up lava in its move across Idaho. THOSE bats are bad characters -- usually rabid and with a very, very cold bite. They live mostly on ice worms.

MOM asked me to post this; she nearly peed her pants laughing when she watched these folks try to catch and release a bat. Does it make it sound more tempting that this is an Irish bat? Video. The commentary is priceless.

I am fighting insanity. It's not easy. These fuckers are insane. So is the life of an "activist". You know... someone who is trying to save all the rest of the fucking sheep so that they don't get sheared too. It's not easy or pleasant at all.

I have two FB groups. They are literature reviews. No discussion.

Oh well. Just venting.

Carry on. Smoke em if ya got em.

I created Amos. He doesn't like to admit it, though he knows the Truth.

And so, we are home. In our domicile. Doing laundry. Getting the mail. Getting ready to go to Iceland. Hoping that someday the bank account will recover.

Happy Labor Day, Mom! We'll ignore the fact that, to the best of our knowledge, you've never done a bit of labor in your life.

In fact, you didn't even have to endure the pains of labor to give birth to your children. Instead, we gave birth to you.

That such a backwards maternal/child relationship should exist here on the MOAB is totally appropriate and normal.

Arrived, as planned, at Sky Harbor airport in Phoenix, Arizona, on Saturday 2 September, with my rental car reservation in hand. Hoo Lord.
On Friday 1 September, to go by the lady who let me through the turnstile at the Rental Car Center after checking my license, the whole world and his brother showed up at Sky Harbor airport and proceeded to the airport's Rental Car Center to take all the autos.
What remained for the likes of me, the next day, was pickup trucks and minivans. All the sedans and coupes were outtathere.

So I'm driving the rental minivan (sigh) in beautiful Paradise Valley with the Sirius satellite radio on, some station called the Bridge.

And whom should they broadcast, but Pete Seeger, with six-string guitar, singing the Talking Union Blues.

I have a couple of MOAB t-shirts that Rapparee thoughtfully sent to me from past Utah trips. I may have been through MOAB one time, many years ago. When I look at my shirts I never think about a town in Utah. :)

Just arrived in Arizona for a week.
At Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix, at the baggage claim carousel,
a young man was wearing a MOAB Utah T-shirt.
It was that striking muddy green color which is prominent
in the camouflage color scheme.

Finally outa Baton Rouge, or (Hughie) Longville. During Hughie's assassination back on 1935 two of his bodyguards opened fire with Tommy guns. In a marble corridor about 15 feet wide! It's surprising that more people weren't killed and wounded!

He picked up a poor black toddler in a one-piece pajama and planted a kiss right on the lips. So unnatural it smacks of child abuse.

Ironic also that "toiletries" doesn't apply to THE toilet (the noun) but to the older existing term applied to act of dressing and preparing oneself (getting dressed and made up has been around a lot longer than the porcelain thrones, though I suppose there is an act of that preparation that included the chamber pot or a trip to the jakes or outhouse.) So is that older term a noun also, or a verb? (I'm too lazy to look it up.)

And why is a small room with a sink and a toilet called a "half-bath"? It doesn't have a bath at all. It should be called a "no-bath".

And speaking of the Clown in Chief, the only reason Trump hasn't royally fucked up the Harvey response is because of a relatively recent law requiring that the FEMA director have at least five years prior experience in disaster work. Left to his own resources, Trump would probably nominated one of his cronies and it would be Heck-of-a-Job-Brownie all over again.

Dunno, but down here in Texas when people need to visit that room they often time say "I have to wash my hands." Presumably, after whatever else really takes them to that room.

Sorry I haven't been around much, MOM, there has been some distracting stuff going on in Texas. (And today I see the Clown in Chief is headed down here because Harvey knocked him off of the front page for a couple of days and he wants back on. I defy him to get wet and hug some poor sweaty bedraggled survivor). Time to go outside and work in the yard. MOM, are you going to make some of your iced green tea with lemon balm? That would taste good this afternoon.

Mom! The room in which one relieves oneself in a home is called a "bathroom". A similar room in a public building is called a "restroom", presumably because it has no bath or shower. So, what about homes in which the bathtub is in one room and the toilet is in another? Does it have a bathroom and a restroom?

One morning, as I was out sibling
The sibbles were strong in the West
And they seemed not to quibble
From sibble to sibbled
Agreeing that Mom was the best!
And the siblings all sibbled back, "Yes!"

They said "Why do we post with our siblings?
And why do we sibble all day?
We ain't gettin' no where
And we're losing our hair,
And we all know that sibling don't pay."

But they never reached a hundred Kay
Never watch as it drew to the top.
They never watched Mom ride the wave back up,
And they say we don't know how to stop!

So I caught up the rest of my siblings
And stuck in a barb for Rapaire
And when BWL tried to chastise Donuel
I just made up some crap from thin air.

I told them, "Here's why we post with our siblings!"
"Here's why we scribbble all day!"
"We scribble and sibble, because we know well,
That we're bound for that Fifty Eight Kay!"

Mother of fifty-six thousand posts!
Cheerer of souls! Shunner of ghosts!
Who of ALL threads has given most!
Stop the MOAB? Close the thread?
Send to rest her poor gray head?
Oh, never let such things be said

Oh, NOBLY said, Booquemanne! NOBLY said!

The remarka by Mark Twain were called " Some Thoughts on the Science of Onanism". Old Sam delivered them in 1879, to an outfit called The Stomach Club, a society of American ne'er-do-wells and writers -- oh, but I repeat myself -- in Paris.

Among other profound insights on the subject, Sam remarked:

Homer, in the second book of the Iliad says with fine
enthusiasm, "Give me masturbation or give me death." Caesar, in
his Commentaries, says, "To the lonely it is company; to the
forsaken it is a friend; to the aged and to the impotent it is a
benefactor. They that are penniless are yet rich, in that they
still have this majestic diversion." In another place this
experienced observer has said, "There are times when I prefer it
to sodomy."

This is linguistic richesse worthy or Rapparree, worthy of the great BeeDub, worthy of--dare I say it?-- our Mom her very self! Oh, if Sam lived today, he'd surely be a hero of the MOAB, a BS firebrand of the first order!

They that shall see this day, and live old age,
Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours,
And say "To-morrow is Saint MOAB day,
And they will strip their sleeve and show their scars,
And say "These wounds I had on MOAB's day."
Old men forget; yet all shall be forgot,
But they'll remember, with advantages,
What feats they did that day. Then shall our names,
Familiar in his mouth as household words?
Amos, Bee-dubya-ell, Acme, gnu, and keberoxu,
Little Hawk and Tweed, Khandu and Rapparee ?
Be in their flowing cups freshly rememb'red.
This story shall the good teach their children;
And Mudcatters shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be rememberèd-
We few, we happy few, we band of siblings;
For they to-day that sheds their pixels with me
Shall be my sibling; be they ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle their condition;
And gentlecatters everywhere now a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here,
And hold their personhoods cheap whilst any speaks
That posted with us upon Saint MOAB's day.

Well, the eclipse is over. It wasn't the exclusive event I had been led to believe. And then, at the end, just as it was reaching climax and totality, the whole thing was covered by a large cloud. All that money I paid for admission down the tubes!!!

We had six adults and two kids on the boat as guests yesterday. My very own brother couldn't make it because of his knees -- he was going to the doctor today and promised to ask about it so I'll call him tonight and see when the surgery is. He's only got a couple of months before his youngest daughter's wedding.

Tomorrow, Chester, Illinois! Home of Popeye the Sailor Man! We'll have canned spinach for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Four hours in Hannibal, Missouri, boyhood home of Sam Clemens, and twelve hours in Chester. Something is seriously wrong here.

Oh, yes. Sam came on board yesterday and talked to the passengers in the Grand Saloon. He asked for questions from the audience. Afterwards I asked him if he'd speak about his essays "1601" and "A Study of the Science of Onanism." He said that he was glad I hadn't asked those questions. I suspect those questions asked where asked by shills.

It was an August night in the South--humid, sultry, and hot. The Verdict restaurant in Graham, NC, is on a block that borders Courthouse Square, and in the center of Courthouse Square is a tall column bearing a statue of the Confederate soldier. All evening long, as we played our three 45' sets on the patio, there were mutterings, motorcycle drivebys, and some concerned whisperings amongst local citizens out enjoying dinner on the patio. By the time we wrapped up our set at 11:00, the four streets leading intot he square had each been blockaded by a squad car with flashing lights. There was a small, sullen crowd around the base of the memorial column, presumably there to defend it, although I couldn't see anyone against whom it required defending. The evening's entertainment was well received, and the borrowed sound-system worked well, and the manager appreciated us and we got paid. She said she closed a little early out of concern for the safety of customers. So there was a certain amount of tension in the air, but no brickbats or strident yells of any kind. I drove home without any problem. But August isn't over yet. North Carolina was a reluctant addition tot he Confederacy--the last one to sign aboard--but the old judgements still ripple through the bloodlines of some locals. Few, but enough to make you stay alert.

We're on the very edge of the eclipse path so won't see an effect more remarkable than the diminished light of a cloudy day. Of which we have had so many this month that it won't be unusual at all. It would be nice to have clear skies to see the skies dim a little.

Sound like a nice and well-planned boat trip, Rap. Some of my best visits with friends are the brief ones while they're in transit, on a layover at our local airport. I drive to the terminal, they exit the security gates, and we sit out in a terminal sharing a picnic lunch I've brought along. They head back, I head home, and we're both happy we've made the system work for us.

Hi, Mom! I bought a box of baking soda today.

On the box, it says in large print, "BAKING SODA".

Under that, it says in smaller print "Great for Baking".

I guess so much baking soda gets used for swimming pool maintenance, carpet cleaning, refrigerator deodorizing, and tooth brushing that they feel it's necessary to actually tell people that baking soda can be used for baking.

Odd. I posted earlier today that I would post this evening. So I am.

Amos, consider someone at the wheel of a vessel sailing in a storm. The sails are reefed and the captain shouts, "Bring 'er to larboard!" to helmsman. The helmsman hears "Bring...to...board!" and turns right. The ship piles up on Skull Rocks and only the captain and the helmsman survive, arguing. Thereafter the skipper says "port" instead of "larboard" and skippers many other vessels without mishap. A captain must be clear in his/her orders!

I know, we are currently approaching Lock and Dam 16, carried on the bosom of the Father of Waters. We bid au revoir to the quaint little river town of Betterndorf, Iowa this morning and set sail for the bucolic burg of Burlington, where we shall moor on the morrow. Much has happened on this voyage, not the least of which was the visit by four of my cousins today. And more visitors in Hannibal. And more in St. Louis. And in Memphis....

Currently we are passing the towboat "Clement C. Atlee." The sun is going to rest in the West and the placid river just keeps roiling along.
