In other news of interest, from one point of view anyway, there is a new contender for the largest object on the solar system, a title long held by Sol.

Comet Holmes has released so much gas and dust that its extended atmosphere, or coma, is larger than the diameter of the sun."

See this page for details.

And the Leonids are peaking this weekend too!

Someone should do something about those Leonids! Every year it's the same thing - they start peeking. heck, if you or I did that, we'd be in jail. Especially after the first few offenses - but do they do anything about those dratted Leonids? NO! Year after year, they peek, and then the next year they peek again.

You'd think they'd get tired of peeking but they don't. they are sick little puppies.

The inherent surface tension of water is the same, as Janie speculates. The side away from the air may be up against something more irregular, like a tabletop, which at a molecular level will have lots of peaks and valleys. It will therefore have a non-uniform pressure on various points along the water boundary, and these will change the amount of additional force needed to break the surface tension. The static force between gravity and the irregular structure when the water is at rest counteracts the surface tension in a way not experienced by the air-boundary side. There may be even something else going on right at the perimeter where the air, water, and tabletop meet.

you betcha! A little cappilary action going on there when air water and tabletop hookup! On of the things the leonids peek at, I'm sure!

Well, as any dickhead knows, capillary action is as capillary action does, I am sure. I learned this maxim from a dyed-in-the-wool dickhead who was a reg'la'r standup guy, and he should know.

Thanks, good Rapaire. I am in your debt for bringing this to my attention. I will be there with bells on. Also cap, pointy shoes, and funny baton.

I posted a link to the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster earlier, but I think that its poor server is now overloaded. They've got some neat stuff in their store; I might even buy their "fish".

I think that the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster's server has been overwhelmed. Check it out on Wikipedia. I kinda like the "Eight 'I'd Really Rather You Didn'ts'".

In fact, I might open a branch here in Pocatello.

The prophet speaks

I don't think MOM would like it if I converted. She has always told me to be very, very wary of noodly appendages.

If, however, I could buy inot a franchise....

I don't think the server is overwhelmed Rapaire. I believe it is strong evidence that the FSM is at work.

While you've been scratching your noodles I've been dodging with my noggin all day, avoiding falling bits of roof, nails, roofing felt, etc. It's like living inside a goddamn drum to stay home when the roofers do your house, and by the time they were replacing some decking directly over my office I was getting more than a bit of a tension headache. I've been outside quite a bit today watching, calming the dogs, walking the dogs, moving them from inside to out so they could watch the activity from their kennel. The job continues tomorrow. The back side of the house and all of the garage are finished. The gables are all ready to do, felt down, and packages of shingles spread around up there. The cut is in for the ridge vent (open to the sky right now). They finish in the morning.

Next week, we start in on the paint.

Welcome, SRS, to 40 days and 40 nights of rain and high winds....

Theological question: can I be Pope and still believe in FSM?

It's fine with me. Just watch out for marinara stains on the papal robes.

Marinara with red vestments, pesto with green, alfredo with white and gold, and olive oil with garlic for everything else.

The work is nearly finished. Let me take this moment to observe that if you stay in the house while they do the work on the roof you can develop a pounding headache.

I feel good now, though. I had something noodly for lunch.

No, but pasta can contain weevil eggs. Gotta watch for flying objects when you open the pasta box.

I thought spaghetti was harvested from trees in Italy by caring Italian peasants. The BBC said so.

Be very careful of those flying objects coming out of the spaghetti box. One of them could be the immaculately conceived spawn of the FSM, who, according to an obscure and heretical cult living in the desert near Las Vegas, is actually a mutant and extremely charismatic India Meal moth.

Maybe, if the building was low enough to the ground. And the ground was soft. And I had rubber soles on my shoes.

You can see the BBC report on the spaghetti harvest in Southern Switzerland here.   It is a gift to us from the FSM.

A friend of mine called today to talk. He's feeling depressed. Seems he lost a cashier's check for $15,000 last week. Carried it around, in anticipation of buying a new car. (My question--why? if you have that kind of money, do your negotiating, then go get the check or the cash or whatever. Write a check.) Forgot and left it behind the visor for a couple of days in the old beater pickup in the driveway, thought he'd dodged the "losing it" bullet by finding it and taking it into the house. Thinks he left it on the edge of his dresser.

He lives with his adult mentally-retarded brother (mental age about 5?), who is a compulsive trash emptier. Dresser near trash can. You get the drift.

Although I've searched the FSM website carefully, a nagging question is unresolved.

In the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, when a child is Spaghettied (the rough equivalent of "christened") should the ritual sprinkling be with Parmesan or Romano - or are there separate schisms subscribing to each.

Our own congregation can't seem to come to an agreement.

John

What makes this question all the more difficult is the lack of uniform agreement, both internationally and within Italy, as to what cheeses these appellations actually refer. According to that most reliable of sources, Wikipedia, Romano is apparently a fairly generic term applied to cheeses that can be made with goat, sheep or cow's milk. However, it also connotes a very ancient method of cheese production. Ancient is good. Right?

The designation parmesan, however, is fraught with contraversy and international disagreement. Some would say parmesan is a term applied only to an apostate American made cheese produced by Kraftsmen.

Think of the implications. What if YOUR child were spaghettied by Kraft Parmesan, moved to Italy, tried to join an FSM congregation there, and was rejected as having been Sprinkled with an imposter.

This could have implications for all eternity!

What's a mudder or fadder to do??!!!!

LH, may the FSM descend upon you and show you The Way, The Truth, and The Light. May you repent of such heresy, and may your repentance involve sharing the same blankets used by "Shane" McBride after an especially hard week, but without bedbugs, crabs and lice.

To answer JiK's question, I think that the FSM would be satisfied if a combination of cheeses, including asiago, were used as long as they were freshly grated. Stuff from green shakers should only be used in An Extreme Emergency.

I made a "fine scale cuisine" discovery today--literally in my own back yard. I was over at the mall trying to get a plastic container with a lid large enough to brine a turkey but small enough to fit in my cooler of ice while it soaks. (I've never done this before, so advice is welcome!) Anyway, the size container I wanted was sold out, and I commented that I could swing by a restaurant supply place in the next town over. The clerk helping me said there was one in Fort Worth, and he named my freeway exit (I live about three blocks from the highway and that exit). I named the only likely business I knew at that corner, I thought it was a warehouse for grocery stores, but it turns out it is a restaurant supply warehouse and they have a cash and carry store out back. I stopped by and it is WONDERFUL! Also more reasonably priced than the other store. I found my container and also bought a jug of soy sauce (I'm almost out).

I saw some pretty little wine glasses that I'm going to add to my list, along with some other utilitarian things that I use all of the time and find myself stepping over to the sink to wash between dishes. Easier to have a couple of extras. I didn't have time to do a lot of shopping this morning, just to take a quick look. They sell quantities of meat and poultry in good cuts at very nice prices. Good thing I have the large freezer!

He can't stand up straight and is limp as a noodle
which has led to a split in the church with many followers now worshipping the macaroni monster.
