Faraday's Law states that the line integral of electric field around a closed curve (= the voltage you'd measure in a loop of wire following that curve) is equal to (negative) the rate of change of flux with time. Flux = (magnetic field strength x area enclosed by curve). Negative just has to do with definition of positive voltage and magnetic North or South.

Let's say F=flux=B x A. With N turns you have F = B * A * N. If your loop is fixed and the field fluctuates, you have

V = - dF/dt = - A * N * (dB/dt)

V: volts
A: area, square meters
N: number of turns
B: magnetic field, Tesla (10000 gauss = 1 Tesla)

If B = B0 sin(wt) then dB/dt = w B0 cos(wt) where w=2*pi*f and f=50 Hz. The RMS value of field strength if you have a sine wave is Brms = B0 / 1.414 where B0 is the zero-peak value of magnetic field.

Substituting in from above,

|V| = | A N (w B0 cos(wt)) |

or (V)rms = A * N * 2 * pi * 50 Hz * (B)rms

Oh how I wish there was more BS,
The best BS that would not stop,
And Mom would never sink a-down
But always burble to the top!

Now for a new song I'm writing:

Way out West where the asparagus grows
Henrietta sits and picks her toes
Helps to fertilize the po-tatoes

But I can't decide if the next line should be something like

Yipee yahoo kiya!

or

Git along li'l doggies git along.

Great minds think at the same moment in time, Rapaire....

And now a short prayer:

From the bane of short-sighted reactions,
From the terror of ideological truism and partisan factoids,
From fixed ideas and herd-like responses,
And other Republican ills,
Good Lord, deliver us.

Well, hopefully Stilly will find the Willie of her dreams.

Anyway, my heart almost stopped to see Mom slumming down the lane again. Will she never learn?

Terry Tempest Williams.

No, I was thinking of:

Willie with a taste for gore
Nailed his sister to the floor.
Mother said, with humor quaint,
"Careful, Will, don't spoil the paint."

And

Down into the well
Which the plumber built her
Aunt Eliza fell.
We must buy a filter.

Then it's, Willie dear, o dearest Willie
Where is your colour you'd some time ago
O Mary dear, the clay has changed me
I'm but the ghost of your Willie O

Then it's, Cock, O cock, o handsome cockerel
I pray you not crow before it is day
And your wings I'll make of the very first beaten gold
Your comb I will make of the silver grey

But the cock he crew and he crew so fully
He crew three hours before it was day
And before't was day my love had to leave me
Not by light of the moon nor light of the sun..

Of course this may not be the Willie you were thinking of...

A

So my Willie dear, o dearest Willie
When shall I see you again
When the fishes fly, love, and the sea runs dry, love
And the rocks they melt in the heat of the sun

Who, dear Still, is "William's" or "Williams"--or are you referring to the ghost of Willie-O version of Childs collection of the so-called "Night Visitor Song"?

So let us sit and ponder on
The fleas of Raparee
As long as everyone agrees
They stay on him, not me.

I must away now --
I can no longer tarry,
The morning's tempest,
I have to cross
I must be guided
Without a compass
Lest I be tardy,
And Mom be lost.

And when he had come to
The true thread open,
He's struck his keyboard,
Hard as a stone.
And through the screen, then
He has seen it clearly,
Mom is not sleeping,
She is not alone.

Now, the first time I was in grad school the U. library was open 24/7. The circulation librarian on the late shift was running a prostitution ring with some of the undergrads. Truly, she was a "Madame Librarian" (she was also an unemployed and jailed librarian shortly after the U. administration found out).

I see definite signs of Spring around here. The sun has been very strong for the past few days, causing quite a bit of melting of snow. That's good to see. The birds seem to be enjoying it too.

Spring cleaning is starting early, MOM. Let me have those old comforters you've left on the end of the couch for afternoon naps. They haven't been washed in a coon's age. And here's the dustmop, give it a swipe under the furniture. I bet we get enough dirt and organic material to give the compost pile a boost.

I'd be surprised if they could read. Even Shame can spell out M-E-N" and "W-O-M-E-N" and "B-E-E-R" and "P-O-L-I-C-E". Granted, that last one takes a good five or ten minutes for him to figure out and he has to pronounce the letters out loud, but he slowly gets there.

Those appear to be stock photos. They could be "naughty office workers" or "naughty secretaries." Few of those women look like they could find their way around the Dewey Decimal System or the Library of Congress.

Hawk, Hawk, please sit back and fine tune your sense of injustice. You will note my somewhat acerbic comment had a direct antecedent in which yon Bookster wanted to correct a perfectly sound use of English from some imaginary pillar of superiority--much as you often do yourself. Unfortunately this is a premise I find unacceptable, corrosive, and only remediable by a sharp smack on the cybernose.

Perhaps you and Rapaire have four tin ears between you. Speaking of which, the wonderfully resonant phrase "half-wit welkin" is unfortunately an empty one, semantically null. The welkin, you should know, is an archaic phrase for the cosmos, the celestial sphere, the heavens or firmament. It is not usually something one assigns the notion of wittedness to. Even less so, half-wittedness.
Perhaps you meant "winkle", a small Atlantic mollusc?

One of my favorite twitter sites is @thereIfixedit and last week she had a photo from NASA with uses of duct tape in space. Old images, moon visits. Working On the Moon.

What's great this week is that NASA knows about her site and they sent her some NEW photos! I think she's entitled to gush a little when she gets a note and some photos from a NASA engineer who enjoys the site and added to it.
