One might consider MOAB Juggernaut, but without the fatalities.

It's a Jerimad, without the whining.

I cannot answer for mass culture, which has definitely gravitated in McLuan's way. But I can say that holding the power to exchange amongst those with whom one chooses to communicate--not those to whom one must communicate in order to dramatize McLuan's Complex, a phrase I just invented for an addiction to electronic signals--is a comfort and a strength. Like all things, the beauty f it is in the eye of the beholder.

I think of MOAB as a thing of a certain kind of beauty, even though the average viewer would be hard put to name it.

I can see a good thing about those phones-that is that your "strolling" instead of sitting on your ass in front of a computer all day!
A health bennie except for the radiating radio waves that shrink brain cells destroying healthy living cells turning them into a putrid sliming protoplasma of fetal matter and gray proturberance covered with pustules ....caustically resulting in a continuation of this bullshit thread....
Talk on me bro's and sistas (smile)

Are you familiar with the work of Shannon and Weaver in communications?

When does communication itself become noise? When does the gadget become the communication? (And don't give me "The medium is the message" because that is neither the title of McLuhan's work or what he was trying to convey.)

Nonsense, sir. A single gesture with the thumb and forefinger grows the text to any size.
And don't come the "Rootier than thou" with me, sirrah. You cnfuse being able to communicate with having to communicate, The former is a blessing, the latter a curse.

Well, that's another point -- going blind reading the screen.

I do not have an iPhone, but I've played around a bit on my daughter's. She has an instrument tuner application that would be great if only she could figure out how to use it. She also has an application that turns the iPhone into a spirit level. That would be cool to have since I can never find my regular spirit level when we're at art fairs and I need to level my display shelves. And being able to get song lyrics on the fly is neat. When she visited at Christmas we wanted to do J.P.'s "Christmas in Prison" and she Googled the lyrics up. My 57 year-old eyes couldn't read the itty bitty font, but her 28 year-old eyes could, and she was doin' the singin' on that one anyway.

Shortly I'm going to start a compilation of all of the Icelandic sagas (in English, I hasten to add). So very many books...and always new views and insights....

Unlike blogs, text messages, and "r u thr d00d" incomprehensibility. Well, I shan't make judgements but when I want to enjoy the silence of the mountains or listen to the sea rush to shore I turn my cell phone off and even, sometimes, forget to turn it back on.

So what book are you reading these days, LH?

"Too many choices!!"

That is exactly what ails so many of us here in the consumer society.

I have a friend--a young divorcee--who allows that the iPhone is better than a man, at least the ones she knows. Pictures, music, conversation AND vibrate mode.

I can do that too--plus scan through voicemails and choose what order to listen to them in, depending on from whom. Oh, and text messages as well, and so on.

Sigh. Too many choices!!

We're far less high-tech here, but I found a lovely little mp3 player on sale at Office Depot that solves the problem of the inexpensive little one I bought a couple of weeks ago. This menu is a dream, the other one is a nightmare. And my kids have dealt with my cast off experiments (my son has figured out how to trick a broken Samsung how to charge, but he can't add to the contents he first loaded, and my daughter has a larger volume mp3 player we bought online, but it has the same goofy chip and menus as the one I'm returning. SO, we're taking back one and getting three tomorrow. Two are on hold (the only two in the store) and I'll visit another store to get the third. $40 each. Not bad, and we can add those tiny little SD memory cards to boost the memory from 2 gig.

I am but beginning my journey. So far I like the sense of connection, the fact that I can get both my home and office email anywhere, can surf the net, dowload songs, play songs and write notes and letters anywhere I happen to be (within the bounds of connection either through a wireless node or a cell node).

Google by voice means you tap a button, hold the phone up to your face and tell it what you want it to google, and it sends the search string to google and displays the result.

I love the stretch-and-shrink technique with your fingertips and the sliding down a long page or list with the stroke of one finger. I love being able to watch a youtube video while walking down the street, if I wish. Or finding and downloading a PodCast from a university and listening to some arcane lecture on history or science or some such while strolling.

There's another application that enables you to point the iPhone at any book's cover, and research the book on the 'Net, finding reviews, ISBN, Amazon listings, etc. I don't have it. There's another that will look up a song for you if you point the iPhone at the radio or hum into it enough notes to make it recognizable. It will look up the song and find a recording of it for you if it can, and tell you the name of the tune and who it was by.

There are over 900 other applications available for free, or for from 1 to 5 dollars.

It's a new plateau of portable information power in the hand. Which does a lot more good than in the Bush.

The first phase of iPhone ownership is infatuation.

The second is expansion.

The third is mastery.

The fourth is Emergence as an Empowered Human. Not everyone can Google by voice and learn the diameter of Jesus while walking on the beach.

MOM, Amos has been influenced by the snark side. The gizmo-crazed purveyors of communcation that is capturing the world, starting with California but spreading outward fast.

If he comes into the room refuse to speak to him until he turns off any devices in his hands, pockets, or belt pouches.

This is the only way to be sure you really have his attention.

And don't let him set the phone on vibrate instead of turning it off.

I just installed a free iPhone application which allows you to speak a search phrase into your phone and have it go directly to Google, transformed into text by speech recognition software, and the view the Google results on the iPhone screen.

So I asked it for the diameter of the Earth, just to test it.

It gave me a list of Google hits, all right, but it got the query wrong--it gave me hits for the diameter of Jesus, instead.

Don't ask me. I have no idea.

The difference is that of COURSE I use the Mac when I am at home, but with an iPhone you can Google while strolling the avenooo or riding through the park or fording a mountain stream somewhere on the edge of EDGE.

More like "Oh yes, do whatever you want to Shame" and "Can Shame light your cig for you, please, sir?"

Dude (if such you are), my brother work for the Illinois State Police. I had him check the little "prison" story out -- hard time my eye! Shame was locked up with people like George Fogarty, who was in for repeat jaywalking, and that terrible person "Little Rat" Gibson, the guy who was caught stealing women's underwear from clotheslines in Blind River. Yeah, Shame was bragging about his "shank" but after the guards checked it turned out he had a piece of foam rubber that came off the mattress in his cell with toilet paper wrapped around half of it for a "handle".

My bro also checked out Officer Jennifer Dana. Now THERE'S one smart, good-looking woman. She once had the hots for Shame McBride, but then he drowned in that cesspool and she's taken up with Shame's brother Don.

Flippin' right, STillness. I try to keep "the equipment" indoors this ttime of year cos it could get froze off out side, speshally if it ain't zipped up tight, know'm sayin'? Besides you can get arrested if it's hangin' out....when yer in public I mean. Like out on the street or in Tim Hortons. I did get arrested once for havin' it out in the back of Tim Hortons by the dumpster but I thought I was alone at the time. Some dumb skank that worked there took a photo with her digidal cameron and I got flippin' arrested! She will pay fer that someday. She will be real sorry. I am plannin' my vengence.

Anyways, I see that Rapoophead is spreadin' his yewshual lies and misunderestimations of me and what I am, like, capable of. He will also be very sorry some day.

The present you sent me, man, you know what I did with it? You don't wanta know. Well, maybe you do, but I ain't gonna tell you. No way, eh? Go crazy just wonderin'. You gotta get up pretty flippin' early in the afternoon to pull one over on this boy cos I grew up on the grotty flippin' hardass streets of Blind River and Sudsy. I have seen it all. I shut 'em up and then I shut 'em down. Danger is my middle name and I ain't scared of nothin'. I have done time, man. Serious time. I have faced down craized flippin' lifers in the pen and touoght them a flippin' thing or two about RESPECT. When I came in the first day they laffed. By the time I left they was sayin' things like "Yessir, Shane, Sir! Nossir, Shane, Sir! Please don't hit me, Shane! Take my cigs, Shane, cos you are the BOSS and I am not worthy!" I am like a flippin' legend to them guys now. No word of a lie. You would hafta see it and then you would know.
