Thank you for sharing that, Rap.

Janie, this is something Rumi wrote that helps me a bit, though the pain of loss is about the sharpest thing there is:

You have a potion
which you give the despairing,
secretly, lest the hopeful,
grieving for it,
should utter lamentation:

Look as long as you can
at the friend you love,
no matter whether that friend
is moving away from you
or coming back to you.

Eiseley

Remember the wisdom of Pogo Possum: Life ain't no ways permanent, and folks are only lent to us for a spell.

There's no way you can get ready to lose a loved one, Janie. You just have to move through it the best way you can and feel and give all the depth of love you can as you move through it.

Strangely enough, the losses that I have felt most keenly were on two different occasions when one of our dogs died. I've never lost a person yet where it hit me as hard as it did with Arnot and Finnegan (both Dachshunds). I guess that was partly because there was no past history of hurt or fear between me and them....just love.

20 years ago this holiday season my sister was dying of breast cancer. She turned 41 in November, and had young children. Given her age and circumstances, she understandably opted for experimental treatments, nearly died from the treatments themselves, came out of a coma and regained just enough strength to be present for and partake in the affirmation of our family together and our abiding love and commitment to one another that the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays represent to us. I was home for Thanksgiving, but that Christmas was the first and only Christmas in my life I have ever spent away from my family-of-origin. I hightailed it to WV for New Years. By then she was so ill she was mostly delusional and incoherent. I was childless at that time, and was able to take time off from graduate school two weeks later to go up to West Virginia to help take care of her in her last 2 weeks of life. I did that for me, not for her. My life circumstances are not going to allow that with my Dad, but also may not be as necessary for either my family or me. None-the-less, it weighs on me.

Kaye died the end of January, 1991. My best last memories of my time with her was over Thanksgiving. She, Annie and I watched a broadcast of Paul Simon's recent Graceland's concert in South Africa on her wide screen TV. She could no longer stand or walk without a walker. She was 5'6" and weighed 87 lbs. She was completely bald and all beautiful brown eyes and beautiful bone structure. None of that stopped her from dancing in her seat on the couch, or from singing along with Paul and her sisters. The suffering in her eyes was stark, but so was the joy.

I used to be pretty good at drawing. I went home from that visit and drew a pencil sketch of her beautiful, emaciated face, with those shining, suffering and joyous eyes. Haven't touched a drawing pencil or water color brush since, and doubt I ever will have the need or compulsion to do so again.

Every loss taps into previous losses.

We haven't lost him yet, we just know we will, sometime relatively soon - could be a few weeks or could be another 2 or 3 months. Until a few weeks ago he had minimal effects from the cancer, and it is shocking for all us, including Dad, to see a sudden, rapid progression in fatigue, weight loss, and shortness of breath. He is not, however, suffering in the same way my sister did, and I don't think he will suffer as much as she did.

In the meantime, we had a remarkably lovely Thanksgiving and anticipate Christmas will be just as special and full of unmitigated love and joy at being together in celebration of that love.

I'm rambling. If it is ok, I may pop in and ramble some more as the spirit moves. I'm pretty isolated right now, don't have the leisure time to get up with loving friends, my loving friends in 3-D are all going through some pretty difficult "stuff" themselves, and many, though not most of them, did not have the "Happy Hollister" family I was born into by an accident of birth, and while willing to listen, wonder what I am whining about. They have a point.

Not seeking comfort or advice, only tolerance and a bit of tenderness. Thanks for letting me ramble and ruminate.   I won't abuse the privilege.

I've taken off my Drill Instructor's hat now, Amos. I won't be using my Command Voice again, at least not soon. I will revert to the meek and mild ex-librarian I am YOU SCUM-SUCKING DISGRACE TO MY ARMY! WHO TOLD YOU TO FOLD YOUR SHEETS LIKE THAT, DIRT BAG? AND YOUR BOOTS ARE A DISGRACE! WHAT DID YOU DO, SHINE THEM WITH A CANDY BAR? DROP AND GIVE ME TWENTY-FIVE!

The last time I told Amos to drop and give me 25, he gave me 2500 words instead... ;-D

(And some of them were words you will not hear used by mere ignorant rabble. No sir! There were one or two really arcane ones I even had to look up to be quite sure of their meaning. I have since added them to my own repertoire and I use them to reduce verbal opponents to stunned stupefaction.)

Yeah, I had a command voice, too, back when I ruled the bridge, and it was a fine thing to have under the circumstances. But I won't use it on you. The cost-benefitr ratio is all wrong...

You'd be surprised at people's reaction when you use the command voice. They really do do what you tell them, probably because they're not used to being aggressively yelled at, with the voice coming from the diaphragm and the speaker being obnoxious. I've all but knocked people down using it. Turns out there's a form of martial art that uses only the voice as a "weapon."

MOM, the young man I picked up at the airport is looking good, and I've learned about how his semester went. And as with his father, he rises to the challenge of something needing repair (puts them in a great mood), so he's in working on the computer I rebuilt. I got the basics in, the new hard drive installed, lots of software, the firewall and security, and now he's trying to get the audio drivers installed. I thought this computer was already making noise, but apparently not.

I've also made his favorite breaded chicken strips. The extras are in the fridge for lunch. As is the way with most mothers, we know a shortcut to our children's hearts. It is through their stomachs, and we don't hesitate to exploit that cheat. :)

Ah, motherhood! Apple pie, Old Glory, the Fourth of July, the boys marching home while young ladies smile and wave and throw flowers, a Nash in the garage, 2.5 children playing baseball in the yard...all the things that make America great! Only a filthy atheist pervert commie would think otherwise.

From a times article on life in Creede, Colorado in the dark of winter:

"Creede is not quite the end of the world, but you can see it from here," said Richard Brown, 63, who was born and raised here and worked 26 years in the silver mine until it closed in the mid-1980s.

It gives me quiet satisfaction to see the deep vein of American ironic humor is still running true below the surface.

I wouldn't know. I assume you're referring to the film but I haven't seen it. The last film I saw was "The Great Train Robbery" where the guy shot at you at the end of the film.

"Groundhog Day", the film, has become a term of common parlance in the American idiom, Rap. You need to stay minimally current--say, at least up to 1990. It refers to the exisatentialist sense of deja vue, all over agai,n repeated redundantly, through multiple iterations of recurrence.
