MWahahaha--protecting Chongo's reputation??

Hell, his reputation--dark and rotten and without scruple or redeeming merit--is the only thing interesting about him!! He's be a cipher without it!! It needs no protection, honest. The fouler it gets the more resaders he has.

Maybe it's the mushrooms but I don't get it.

No, thanks anyway, but I don't want any of your shrooms, man. I still wouldn't understand.

Did you know that mushrooms are an excellent food for women to eat? They offer up lots of micronutrients that are particularly useful to women. MOM knows that - but I think the mushrooms she got back in the neighboring cow pasture don't have a thing to do with micronutrients.

You're right, Amos. I shouldn't have mentioned it. I'll change it now.

Maggie, I put your unmentionables in the mail yesterday.

Well, it's nice of him to take on the cost of mailing the clothes as well as the cash; not everyone in his position would. Not that I know what his position is or was, you understand.

It is still illegal in 37 states.

And seven Canadian Provinces, 174 countries, five planets, and 72% of the galaxy...not to mention a nearly infinite number of other dimensions.

Yeah, sounds about right--kind of screwed up, distorted, twisted, hard to get a fix on, full of varietal aberration and undue complexity.

I do wish that the person pretending to be me would stop. He (or she?) acts with illiteracy and certainly does not provide Canadians with a decent reputation. As my mother used to say, "As long as you have your good name you have everything" and such drivel undermines everything for which this country stands.

Yes, I was once like that: drunken, slovenly, and unwashed. But I now have the love of a good woman (Jennifer Dana), a decent job, my GED, and I'm attending community college. Yes, I've reformed and my life is very good indeed.

As we all know, a calque is a borrowing of a word from one language to another, sometimes by translating the roots of the word or compound word and combining the translations. For example, the American slang word "skyscraper" worked its way into common parlance in many languages, as a calque. Here are some interesting language variations:

Afrikaans: "wolkekrabber" ("clouds-scraper")
Bulgarian: "небостъргач" ("sky-scraper")
Chinese: "摩天大樓" (mótiān dŕlóu, "sky-scraping big building")
Czech and Slovak: "mrakodrap" ("cloud-scraper")
Danish: "skyskraber" ("cloud-scraper")
Dutch: "wolkenkrabber" ("clouds-scraper")
Estonian: "pilvelőhkuja" ("cloud-breaker")
Finnish: "pilvenpiirtäjä" ("cloud-sketcher")
French: "gratte-ciel" ("scrapes-sky")
German: "Wolkenkratzer" ("cloud-scraper")
Greek: "ουρανοξύστης" ("skyscraper")
Hebrew: "גורד שחקים" ("sky-scraper")
Hungarian: "felhőkarcoló" ("cloud-scraper")
Icelandic: "skýjakljúfur" ("cloud-splitter")
Indonesian and Malay: "pencakar langit" ("scraper-sky")
Italian: "grattacielo" ("scrape-sky")
Japanese: "摩天楼" (matenrou, "sky-scraping tower")
Lithuanian: "dangorai?is" ("skyscraper")
Norwegian: "skyskraper" ("cloud-scraper")
Persian: "آسمانخراش" ("skyscraper")
Polish: "drapacz chmur" ("cloud-scraper")
Portuguese: "arranha-céu" ("skyscraper")
Romanian: "zgârie-nori" ("scrapes-clouds")
Russian: "небоскрёб" ("skyscraper")
Serb: "neboder" ("sky-ripper")
Spanish: "rascacielos" ("skyscraper")
Swedish: "skyskrapa" ("skyscraper")
Turkish: "gökdelen" ("sky-piercer")
Vietnamese: "nhŕ chọc trời" ("sky-poker")

SO here's the question. What does it mean about the deeper mindset of language speakers, for example, when the Vietnamese building "pokes" the sky rather than scrape it, the Turkish one "pierces" it, the Serbian buyilding "rips" it, and the Icelandic building "splits" it?

Enquiring minds want to know. In a deeper sense, what does it really mean to "define" something?

From this hundred-terraced height,
Sight more large with nobler light
Ranges down yon towering years.
Humbler smiles and lordlier tears
Shine and fall, shine and fall,
While old voices rise and call
Yonder where the to-and-fro
Weltering of my Long-Ago
Moves about the moveless base
Far below my resting-place.

Mayflower, Mayflower, slowly hither flying,
Trembling westward o'er yon balking sea,
Hearts within Farewell dear England sighing,
Winds without But dear in vain replying,
Gray-lipp'd waves about thee shouted, crying
         "No! It shall not be!"

Jamestown, out of thee?
Plymouth, thee?thee, Albany?
Winter cries, Ye freeze: away!
Fever cries, Ye burn: away!
Hunger cries, Ye starve: away!
Vengeance cries, Your graves shall stay!

Then old Shapes and Masks of Things,
Framed like Faiths or clothed like Kings
Ghosts of Goods once fleshed and fair,
Grown foul Bads in alien air?
War, and his most noisy lords,
Tongued with lithe and poisoned swords?
Error, Terror, Rage and Crime,
All in a windy night of time
Cried to me from land and sea,
         No! Thou shalt not be!

Anthony Steyning says:

"... For if man needed to create myths or fairy tales to deal with his own mind and to step out beyond himself so he could look down upon himself and heal himself or give himself that extra bit of courage and strength in the face of mostly cruel and often endless setbacks, then for a time and despite immediate, built-in, mostly silly taboos, this was fine. But by beginning to believe his own embroidered fantasies, imposing them as if they were the truth, protecting them as precious property, he created the beginning of his own degradation. Because fable or myth is a series of pretty fibs and an elaborate lie however well meant, however well told, represents the seed of destruction that every grand falsehood carries within itself. "

and I agree.

My MOM would have been 90 today. Time flies!

Lovely day out here. All things considered, we're very lucky that the neighborhood just got a good washing in the rain, not the thrashing of outflow boundary winds.

I heard tell someone took a trip. Where did he travel to?

I seem to remember that Shame took a trip a little while back. How WAS the jail, Shame? Did you see any of your old "buddies" in there? Surely you'd remember your "'ole friends", wouldn't you? Did you score any smokes?

Yes, I recently took a trip as well. We went to Southern Utah, Arizona (visited the Navajo Nation, in fact), a tiny bit of New Mexico, Southwestern Colorado, and Eastern Utah. My trip, however, was spent roaming around, seeing the sights, staying in motels without bars on the windows from which we could come and go as we pleased -- stuff like that.

Shame, remind me to tell you what the Apaches used to do to drunken fools like you. On second thought, you probably don't really want to know about being staked out in the desert with your eyelids cut off, do you?

You are one sick flipper, Rapoop! I am glad you live so flippin' far away from Ontario, eh? Havin' you anywhere's near here would be very bad!

Yeah, I was in jail in Sudsy for a whiles, but they kicked me out. They said I was lowerin' the standards there and bein' a bad inflooence on the other prisners! I do not know what the flip they meant by that, but I am glad to be out, eh?

I am on probitation again. I gotta report once a week to the local cop shop and tell 'em what I am doin'. That is a pretty short story most days, so I am basicly out the door in, like, a minute or two. I brung them a old stale donut last week just for laffs. They did not think it was so funny and they would not acksept it. So I ate it myself.

This proves what I have always known. Cops ain't that smart!

- Shane

p.s. You asked about my buddies in jail? Yeah, there was a bunch of my old pals there, includin' regulars like Billie T, Ace, Homerun, Keesick, Jeff D, Mongo, Noodles, Pizza Brain, and Fasttrack. Snake is still there too, but he is NOT my buddy cos he tried to kill Don one time. NEVER touch the brother of a McBride!!!

Believe me, I wouldn't touch a McBride if a McBride were drowning in a cesspit filled with alligators and I was the only help to be had. I wouldn't touch a McBride if he, she, or it were dying and I was the only person who could save their life. I wouldn't touch a McBride to pull them out of quicksand. Yessir, I wouldn't touch a McBride to save their life.

Well, I don't want to get Shame angry with me. He'd probably smack me a good one with his hanky and THAT hasn't been washed since 1934 when his great-grandfather passed it on to his son who passed it to Shame's father, from whom Shame stole it. That odor on it ain't perfume 'cause Shame sometimes runs out of toilet paper and...never mind.

Come to think of it, Shame has a perfumed lace hanky he uses to "slap" people with whom he disagrees. The perfume has an odor of violets, which is du rigor in Shame's circles.

It is not that far from Dingle, but it is better than Dingle. Remember that name. Dangle. There been McBrides livin' around Dangle ever since...well, probly before Jesus, know what I mean? A loooong time ago. When the flippin' pottato famine come then a lot of us McBrides deecdied to seek our forchuns over in CAnada where there is a lotta good land for growin' dope. And that is why I am here, eh? Anyways, if my ansestors had had the chance then they woulda wiped yers right off the flippin' map! Too bad it did not happen that way. If it had, then you would not be here, eh? And that would be good as far as I can see.

Pink slime MIGHT have been a fuel but there are too many chemical additives, they act like a retardant. . . wait, that might be the answer right there.
