They figured that if you knew, it would go to your head and you'd become intolerably vain and self-satisfied.

...Rap-based youth culture...

I beg your pardon? There is a "youth culture" based on ME? I have groupies, disciples, and everything and no one thought to tell me? Is there some reason I haven't been told until now?

Ali G is a character created by Sacha Baron Cohen to satirize what I would assume is the hip-hop and Rap-based youth culture in the UK. He appears as the host of a talk show and does interviews with celebrities. Do a search on Youtube and you will find numerous episodes of Ali G's show.

Imperfection lies with the manufacturer, not the product.

And while we're talking about it, in order to develop a novel model to predict if a so called normal tetrahedral compound crystallizes in a wurtzite- or sphalerite superstructure type, the system Cu3AsS4-Cu3SbS4 was reinvestigated. A solid solution series was prepared and the mixed crystals were characterized by powder X-ray techniques. The crystal structures of Cu3As0.330Sb0.670S4, Cu3As0.736Sb0.264S4, and Cu3AsS4 were refined from single crystal X-ray data. The refinements converged to R = 0.0209, wR2 = 0.0484 (Cu3As0.330Sb0.670S4, 201 unique reflections, 15 parameters), R = 0.0235, wR2 = 0.0596 (Cu3As0.736Sb0.264S4, 218 reflections, 15 parameters), and R = 0.0241, wR2 = 0.0669 (Cu3AsS4, 721 reflections, 45 parameters). Z is 2 for all compounds. The volumes of the tetrahedra [MS4] were calculated for the investigated compounds. In addition, the corresponding data were calculated for further solids from literature data. The volumes of the tetrahedra are used to separate compounds with a sphalerite type anion arrangement from compounds with hexagonal packed anions. A closer inspection of the tetrahedra volumes reveals a greater variation for one given material in the case of wurtzite type superstructures than for sphalerite type superstructures.

To stray only slightly from whatever the subject is, my brother shot a 99/100/4X at 50 feet with my Kimber Model 82 last Thursday. Not too shabby for as hungover as he was at the time.

Thanks! Yes, those are all solanacea (nightshade) family. Amazing, actually what all that group of plants produce.

For what it's worth, you can also graft tomatoes onto jimson weed. If you do, don't eat them. Texas needs liberal thinkers.

Them mice "process" the seeds alright -- that's what makes them run around and things. I don't think that mice have any special immunity to datura.

I prefer a book written from the persepctive of a fruit bat. Doesn't Stella Luna visit jimson weed? Yes, I know what it is. It's a noxious beauty. The mice love the seeds and race around that part of the garden in winter eating them. They must be able to process the toxins. The dogs have been trying to process those mice, when I let them in the front yard. :)

Sacred Datura is jimsonweed, and it's poisonous if you ain't careful. Try to be careful. Mom has enough grief in her life what with Amos and LH.

Just the fact that you know Everett, Washington (my home town, though I did live in West Seattle, Washington, until I was 11, but I wasn't born there and I'll keep that part to myself for a security question) says you MUST know Bob Nelson. There's no other answer for it.

Just put up another treatise on organic gardening. How many takers do you think I'll have to my premise that one should poke through the garden and remove some pests by hand, so you know what's out there? I need to take a class on insects. Or read a good text book.

Read it out loud to MOM. She'll enjoy the caterpillar close-ups.

Well, it IS a business conference, but I might maybe perhaps wraggle just a few moments away. Just maybe, mind you. Us librarians take our conferences seriously and attend every bullsession and evening beerswilling informal networking discussion we can.

We ARE, after all, professionals to the core and more.

Besides, how would Bob know what I look like? I haven't seen him in, oh, a couple of weeks or less now.

Rapaire, have Bob take you on a ride up on Rucker Hill. I lived on Laurel Drive for years. My mother sold the house and moved to Seattle after she retired, but it was a great place to live as a kid. This was back in the days when we still walked to school (a two mile walk was good for you) and my folks got lucky to buy the house on the salary of a librarian. I think, in 1965, it cost $35,000. (Bob should remember the house. I think he sent a note when the soffit caught fire a few years ago. Turns out I went to school with the current owner.) A trip out to see Dad's place at Priest Point would also be a nice drive (but they've improved the house so much he wouldn't recognise it.)

Old Home Week.

Over twelve hours and I'm still the only one who cares about poor, poor, Mom. No one else calls here or stops in to pour her a cup of tea and give her even a crust of moldy bread. Well, neither Rhizopus Nigricans nor Rhizopus Stolonifer has never stopped ME from giving Mom some moldy bread, and Salmonella Typhi won't prevent me from refilling her water bottle for her.

That's why I'm her favorite (favourite in non-English-spelling countries).

Well MOM, my brother has left. There was a going-away party for him at the Legion Hovel last night, but it was the height of decorum and only a couple of cops got beaten up and one patrol car set on fire. Can you believe that in spite of all those shots not one single person was hit (except Rockhead Wilson, but no one is sure if he's a person or not and besides the bullets bounced off)? Bro will be back in Illinois afore'n you know it, full of tales of what he saw and did here, some of which might even bear some slight resemblance to The Truth, such as it is.

Just thought you'd like to know.

I'm off to Everett WA next Tuesday, too.

It was a good law, and most of the rest of the population are glad it's in place, even if it was stuck in as an amendment to a law regulating how thick and what color of paint was to be used to paint crosswalks on the downtown streets and at the crossings for schools. The "old paint" referred to the horses and not the Behr so it got past the town council with nary a whimper.

Do you KNOW how many auto body shops that law has put out of business? Some of which belonged to Legionnaires and/or Legionnettes? On the other hand, the veterinary business is flourishing, especially the "spas" which detoxify horses and also treat the occasional sheep and goat for, ah, other things.

MOM, you're slumming again. How often have we told you to avoid walking down by the Legion Hovel all by yourself? One of those guys is liable to knock you over when they get on their horses to head home (no one will let them drive, they'd drive drunk. But the theory that a drunk rider isn't such a problem has paid off in a lot lower property casualty and auto repairs in town).

The fires in Yellowstone and the Tetons and the Gros Ventres are o-u-t out, or very nearly so. Rained and snowed all day yesterday, and I woke up to snow on the lawn today. Just a wet dusting, but a Sign Of Things To Come. I suspect that it indicates the End Of The World As We Know It: soon women will be wearing pants and men will be speeding along at speeds in excess of 25 miles per hour (any faster and the breath would be sucked from your lungs and you'd die). Nostropompous, an Alsatian prophet, predicted all of this in 1217, just before he was collected by the local Stray Dog Collector and eaten by the citizens of Merdehaus-Sur-La-Seine at their annual Feast Of Our Lady Of The Divine Figure.

I do wonder, though, just what Rap intends to do with all of MOM's "everything" that she is going to leave him when he dies.    You're a brave man, Rapaire. I don't know that I would want to be hauling all of MOM's baggage into the grave with me.

For her to go ahead and unload everything onto you at your death, she must think you are the Pharaoh or something.

You sure have pulled the wool over her eyes.

Except she wants to talk to you about that little matter of the forest fire at Yellowstone. YOu burned up her still in the process.

But, then.... Donald Rumsfeld said it better:

"Reports that say that something hasn't happened are always interesting to me,
because as we know,
there are known knowns;
there are things we know we know.
We also know there are known unknowns;
that is to say we know there are some things we do not know.
But there are also unknown unknowns --
the ones we don't know we don't know."

I suspect William Shatner, Shane and even John Hardly may support the statement that there are reports that something hasn't happened?

I've spent a fair amount of time with Derrida and Foucault, and they spent some quality time with your fellow Bachelard, so what goes around comes around, as they say. MOM prefers to use that stack of books as a doorstop.

The whole point of scientific rigor is to get clear about what part of experience is reliable, rather than attributable to errors in viewpoint. Experience is well and good but only if you can refrain from adding a bunch of other stuff into it.

Going by my own experiences, I'd say that a couple of minutes of genuine experience easily outweighs all the scientific opinions (and pontification) in the world. It registers, however, only on the one who has had the experience.

Thomas Edison, one of the most prolific inventors in history, holding 1,093 U.S. patents, was a telegraph operator (IMO, could only loosely be called a scientist).
Most of his inventions came from his experience, not from his study of science or the theory of his inventions. .
I am not underplaying the value of science in our lives, but see the importance of of getting out to experienc life....like Gaston Bachelard seemed to say.

Philosopher and scientist Gaston Bachelard (1884-1962), exposed errors in scientific thinking. He contended that progress in science could be influenced or blocked by obstacles, since "scientific knowledge" had no place for " ordinary knowledge" gained through experience. He also challenged scientist to take the opposite position (used in philosophy) to challenge and verify scientific thought, that was (is) not very well built into science processes.
His work als dealt with many other topics, including poetry, dreams, psychoanalysis, the imagination and architecture.

Considering his published work, I suspect Little Hawk is correct in his analysis.

I think one can do both, but that Gaston Bachelard was probably making a point about people who have wonderful verbal skills, and who enjoy playing with those skills for their own mental amusement, but who fail to achieve much in the real world because they are too busy just talking about it rather than doing it.
