Stop and think a moment: walking to the front of the house during a running movie and asking the viewers to stop everything and explain how the projector works is a bit of an imposition. There are lots of pages here at Mudcat with the answers readily available. Tell you what I'll do. If you can figure out how to find them the answers are right under your nose.

So you are telling me that the order of the posts here have been jumbled? Does that apply throughout the entirety of "MOAB" or is it restricted to this page?

Will it remain jumbled? If so, why keep it? Why not scrap very jumbled thread & begin anew?

Otherwise, those who venture in here as a newbie, as I am, shall never make sense of any of this or any other jumbled thread!

Would any of you, in this thread of BS Mom, step outside your BS persona for a moment and answer these serious questions?

GS

G-Spot--you are at an extreme disadvantage by entering the thread at this point. Reading the whole thing is the recommended approach, not skipping through at the high points (we don't have MOAB Cliff Notes) or stopping only at the decorative html. The database was scrambled last week, so what was an orderly progression of BS has been rototilled by Gluon's digging in the sub-atomic garden on Max's dining room table. The posts are out of order (literally as well as figuratively). I won't accuse you of having an orderly mind--were that the case, you'd have been charmed and completely swept away at the whimsical side of this group of professional and pseudo-intellectuals who amuse one another with this ongoing banter.

(Even the walking-talking-turd Martin Gibson tried breeching the BS walls and gave up.)

In MOAB poetical terms, please keep the following in mind:

A Parting Guest
--James Whitcomb Riley

What delightful hosts are they --
   Life and Love!
Lingeringly I turn away,
This late hour, yet glad enough
They have not withheld from me
   Their high hospitality.
So, with face lit with delight
   And all gratitude, I stay
Yet to press their hands and say,
"Thanks. -- So fine a time! Good night."

and if we happen to learn that you died, we'll be sure to run "A Parting Glass" here.

A shining example of what I said in my original post. "Can You Top This?" The thing about this thread that is so ironic is that it is called "The Mother of all BS Threads" and it no longer makes even a small cow-pie. Do you think the "BS" stands for "Boy Scouts", because that is waht it seems we have here, a bunch of awkward, groping Boy Scouts on their first camp-out.\

an unwarranted and unnecessary intrusion

Maybe one of these?

Igneous Intrusion
An igneous intrusion (also called a laccolith or a plutonic formation) is a formation in which magma (molten rock) is trapped beneath the surface of the Earth and pushes the rock located above it into a dome shape. It has a flat base and a convex upper surface. The magma cools and solidifies, and eventually, it is exposed (as the fractured sedimentary rock above it erodes away).

"Who you calling an igneous intrusion?"

Disclaimer: Nothing in my last post should be construed that guests are unwelcome visitors to MOAB or that MOABites consider guests to be an unwarranted and unnecessary intrusion by those whose mind cannot comprehend the total magificence of what has and is being built. Such construction may only be put upon my last post by those who cannot comprehend what they read, are terminally ignorant of the nuances of language, or both. Or neither, for matter. And nothing therein should be taken in any manner than confuses, in Pope's words, "The puppet with the puppeteer" (or something to that effect). Remember, objects in the mirror are much, much closer than they appear, to always wear clean underwear so that you won't be embarassed when it is cut off of you in the Emergency Room after the accident, that a penny saved is a penny earned, to floss regularily, and to never mix alcohol and gunpowder even if it seems like it would make a drink with one hellacious kick, because it doesn't. Take it from me, it doesn't, but it CAN ruin good whisky.

A brave sort, that GUEST G-spot. But by skipping around no one can understand MOAB. It must be read from the beginning, savored like fine wine and food, and digested and made part of the person reading it. No where else is Francis Bacon's statement that "some books are made to be digested" more true than in the MOAB.

And to truly understand the MOAB, the reader should completely understand each reference, each link. But above all, indeed far outreaching any thing else about the MOAB, the reader should realize from the outset that MOABites care deeply about Mother and don't really give a rat's ass what the casual reader thinks. And therein, dear reader, lies what is arguably the greatest strength of not only MOAB, but of all great literature.

Is this thread the codsack of Mudcat, where all the nuts hang out?
I started reading from the front and after several pages I began to skip a few, read, skip, read, skip until I finally got to this page. It looks like the last few thousand post have been made by a select few who are merely trying to impress one another with their wit, their wisdom and their smarts. So what have you accomplished if you are all so impressed with one another? This thread is like a club of teenagers that exists for no other purpose than to attempt to outdo each other. Hey, fellows, which of you can fart the loudest? Who has the biggest whangie? I know...let's all play "Can You Top This?"

I see some of you in other threads and often you say something worth reading, but here, you revert to your pimply faced, infantile, sophomoric pretensions. This thread is not even good bullshit.

I prefer a different mathematician's approach to gravity this evening:

You Are Old, Father William
(a parody, by Lewis Carroll, of course!)

"You are old, father William," the young man said,
   "And your hair has become very white;
And yet you incessantly stand on your head--
Do you think, at your age, it is right?"

"In my youth," father William replied to his son,
   "I feared it might injure the brain;
But, now that I'm perfectly sure I have none,
Why, I do it again and again."

"You are old," said the youth, "as I mentioned before,
   And you have grown most uncommonly fat;
Yet you turned a back-somersault in at the door--
Pray what is the reason for that?"

"In my youth," said the sage, as he shook his grey locks,
"I kept all my limbs very supple
By the use of this ointment - one shilling a box--
Allow me to sell you a couple?"

"You are old," said the youth, "and your jaws are too weak
   For anything tougher than suet;
Yet you finished the goose, with the bones and the beak--
Pray, how did you manage to do it?"

"In my youth," said his father, "I took to the law,
   And argued each case with my wife;
And the muscular strength, which it gave to my jaw,
Has lasted the rest of my life."

"You are old," said the youth, "one would hardly suppose
   That your eye was as steady as ever;
Yet you balanced an eel on the end of your nose--
What made you so awfully clever?"

"I have answered three questions, and that is enough,"
Said his father. "Don't give yourself airs!
Do you think I can listen all day to such stuff?
Be off, or I'll kick you down stairs.

LIGHT MAY ARISE FROM TINY RELATIVITY VIOLATIONS, according to a new
theory. Speaking most recently at last month's American Physical
Society meeting of the Division of Atomic, Molecular, and Optical
Physics in Nebraska, Alan Kostelecky of Indiana University (812
855-1485, KOSTELEC@INDIANA.EDU) described how light might exist as a
result of breaking an assumption of relativity theory known as
Lorentz symmetry. In Lorentz symmetry, the laws of physics stay the
same even when you change the orientation of a physical system (such
as a barbell-shaped molecule) or alter its velocity. According to
special relativity, the speed of light is the same in every
direction, a notion that current experiments verify to a few parts
in 10^16. However, if physicists find variations in the speed of
light with direction, this would provide evidence for broken Lorentz
symmetry, which would radically revise notions of the universe.
Broken Lorentz symmetry would give spacetime a preferred direction.
In its simplest form, broken Lorentz symmetry could be visualized as
a field of vectors (arrows) existing everywhere in the universe. In
such a picture, objects might behave slightly differently depending
upon their orientation with respect to the vectors.

In a recent
paper, published in Physical Review D (Bluhm and Kostelecky,
Physical Review D, 71, 065008, published 22 March 2005), the authors
propose that the veryexistence of light is made possible through a
vector field arising
from broken Lorentz symmetry. In this picture, light is a
shimmering of the vector field analogous to a wave blowing through a
field of grain (see animation at
http://www.physics.indiana.edu/~kostelec/faq.html).

The researchers
have shown that this picture would hold in empty space as well as in
the presence of gravity (curved spacetime) which is often ignored in
conventional theories of light. This theory is in contrast to the
conventional view of light, which arises in a space without a
preferred direction and as a result of underlying symmetries in
particles and force fields. Kostelecky says that the new theory can
be tested by looking for minute changes in the way light interacts
with matter as the earth rotates (and changes its orientation with
respect to the putative vector field).

In addition, Kostelecky says
that neutrino oscillations might arise from interactions between
neutrinos and the background vector field, as opposed to the
conventional explanation, which invokes neutrino mass as the
explanation for the oscillations.

There ya go, then. Space is certainly not something to be made light of.

In other strange-quark news-quark....

An international team of nuclear physicists has determined that particles called strange quarks do, indeed, contribute to the ordinary properties of the proton.
Quarks are subatomic particles that form the building blocks of atoms. How quarks assemble into protons and neutrons, and what holds them together, is not clearly understood. New experimental results are providing part of the answer.

The experiment, called G-Zero, was performed at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility in Newport News, Va. Designed to probe proton structure, specifically the contribution of strange quarks, the experiment has involved an international group of 108 scientists from 19 institutions. Steve Williamson, a physicist at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, is the experiment coordinator.

"The G-Zero experiment provided a much broader view of the small-scale structure of the proton," said Doug Beck, a physicist at Illinois and spokesman for the experiment. "While our results agree with hints from previous experiments, the new findings are significantly more extensive and provide a much clearer picture."

Beck will present the experimental results at a seminar at the Jefferson facility Friday morning. Also on Friday, the researchers will submit a paper describing the results to the journal Physical Review Letters. The paper will be posted on the physics archive (under "nuclear experiment") at http://www.arxiv.org.

The centerpiece of the G-Zero experiment is a doughnut-shaped superconducting magnet 14 feet in diameter that was designed and tested by physicists at Illinois including Ron Laszewski, now retired. The 100,000-pound magnet took three years to build.

In the experiment, an intense beam of polarized electrons was scattered off liquid hydrogen targets located in the magnet's core. Detectors, mounted around the perimeter of the magnet, recorded the number and position of the scattered particles. The researchers then used mathematical models to retrace the particles' paths to determine their momenta.

"There is a lot of energy inside a proton," Beck said. "Some of that energy can change back and forth into particles called strange quarks." Unlike the three quarks (two "up" and one "down") that are always present in a proton, strange quarks can pop in and out of existence.

"Because of the equivalence of mass and energy, the energy fields in the proton can sometimes manifest themselves as these 'part-time' quarks," Beck said. "This is the first time we observed strange quarks in this context, and it is the first time we measured how often this energy manifested itself as particles under normal circumstances."

The results are helping scientists better understand how one of the pieces of the Standard Model is put together. The Standard Model unifies three forces: electromagnetism, the weak nuclear interaction and the strong nuclear interaction.

This is why good BSers are so blithe as they leap from string to string completely ignoring the ordinary protocols of Proper Spacetime Meaning. This is also why these jolly scarpers upset ordinary folks so much -- they tremble in their boots at the notion that not only their territory but also every map they own can be rendered useless by a single twist of the subjunctive Mighta-Muumuu or the Terrible Willbe-Was oscillator. Gives' em the Pandimensional Relativistic Heebie Jeebies of the lower thesaurus and wrecks their complacent epistimologies in a heartbeat, it do. Brainwaves scattering like stardust. Turrible.

All Gluon has to do in the event of temporary temporal loss is to relocate ninety degrees to this space-time locus. Thus when "this" space-time locus (which is actually the point where a sheaf of space-time parabolas overlap) is offset, oh, say, six months, Gluon isn't affected because Gluon isn't in the offset "here-now." Another analogy (the math is far, far clearer!) is that the sheaf of parabolas defining the "here-now" space-time locus actually bend back on themselves because of gravitons, resulting in a toroidal definition. Gluon's relocation might then be compared to a doughnut which has neither hole nor doughnut.

Boy, I sure do wish I could post the math for this! It's just plain elegant Oh well.

But surely if Gluon wiped out the last six months, even only on a temporay basis, then he wipes out the six months which contain the point at which his probability waveform collapsed to one particular improbability, then he no longer exists in a form capabale of eating the Mudcat, or any other cat for that matter.

In short, losing bits of Mudcat causes Gluon to stop existing, so he can't lose bits of Mudcat.
