I'll be wise about ANY free samples offered. >;-)

I know this will sound odd on accounta I am a modern man and I tolerate most people and many things but Jesus H. Christ I now know why women come to dislike being hit on and call it sexist when it really is just the nature of the beast. One at yer Sobeys and the other at the corner store where I buys me smokes. The one at Sobeys is a 'gusher', all smiles and chatty so it ain't to bad. The smokes lady? She is pushy... what are you doing this weekend and shit??? I am always polite. I smile. I banter slightly, get me smokes and exit. But, it is becoming annoying. The one at the Credit Union has transferred downtown so she's not a bother. Hmmm... did ever tell you about 'the Turkey Girl' at the Credit Onion? She told me that she lived alone and such and she doesn't cook a whole turkey just for her and her Mum so she had a bunch of frozen turkeys passed out to her at work and by charities she volunteers for and "I'll give you a turkey if you cook it and invite me over. I'll bring a couple of bottles of wine." A comely lass of about 40. I'll admit, I did mull it over.

I'd even consider wearing my wedding ring again if I hadn't sold it at the pawn shop.

Hahahahahaaaaa!

The free samples don't generally extend beyond the food on the table, gnu. Keep that in mind and you won't get yourself into any trouble.

Adventurous travel, eh? I may go up to Sobeys for a walk later and chat up the ladies who serve up free product samples and hand out coupons. Not for any specific purpose except to keep a 'hand in the game' should I ever decide to wield my charm again. Nudge nudge, wink wink.

I am off, Mom, to the Great Divide, flying to Denver in the morning and rolling south to Pueblo and Mosca for a visit to a little cottage not far from the Sand Dune National Park near Mosca, half-way between Denver and Albuquerque. It is only for a weekend, or I would meander around more. As I once announced in a previous life, "I shall return."

The folks from the Legion Hovel want you to bring back some souvenirs that they can put up on the wall for decoration.

I forebear a response for I am just a shy, humble boy from the Great Midwest.

Stay away from home or village
When the Rapper comes to pillage
Steal your windows, forks and china
Like a screeching rabid mynah
Raze your home and salt your farm!
Stay away, he'll do no harm.
In his pillaging obsession
He'll just ruin your possessions
And let you live another day,
If you stay the hell away!

I assault no one. Only cities, villages, huts, mansions, castles, and other abodes. I give fair warning so that other people and/or animals won't be hurt. Looting and pillaging yes, certainly, but done in a civilized manner.

IF he was charged for every location he has assaulted, he'd be so overdrawn his shorts would be showing. I mean, this is Rapparree we're speaking of. He has the dubious distinction of having the ORIGINAL Rap sheet. It's as long as his vocabulary.

"indoor outhouse"? Why don't we call them 'inhouses'?

Temperatures in Juneau, Alaska, rest comfortably in the mid60s, just the way I like it.

I never bother with measuring summer heat in any units except personal suffering units. 1 PSU is a few degrees outside the comfort zone for a short period of time. Yesterday was too annoying to go outside for about six hours (or suffer it grumblingly). hat's about ten PSUs, or 1 Personal Grumble. Ten Grumbles equals 1 Pure Bitch, or half a Moan.

Questions?

We sail before the rosy fingers of dawn color the sky. Speaking of which, I got some GREAT pix yesterday of the sunset. Did you know that when the sun sets in the Atlantic Ocean the water boils and turns to steam? That's what makes clouds.

An all day sail tomorrow, rigging the ratlines and hatches battening all the way. Our sole food for the last few days has been weevilly ship's biscuit and coffee that tastes like rust and oil, but hardships build character.

Tomorrow evening we'll be in Coinjock, NC. I understand that they got electricity just a week or so ago and they await running water and indoor outhouses with bated breath.

Gee... still lots of folks without power in NB and NS. I heard 185k in NB lost power. Lots of pics in the papers. Facebook is full of nasty stories. I enjoyed it. When I saw on the radar that the rain (a LOT of rain; I cleaned off two catch basin covers out front) was over, I flung open the windows and Mum Nature serenaded me to sleep with the wind in the trees. Bitch woke me up a few times to but 'bad/good' eh?

It's pow'ful hot down here on the Hades Border, but in the early hours and the later afternoon it is a pleasant benign warmth; it's just from 9:00 to 4:00 that it feels like leftover hellbiscuit. Neither Maggie nor I like this much heat. But we endure, as endure we must. As my favorite son once said, "persistence is how we find out who we are."

And because of a cold front stalled over Florida we aren't sailing again until noon tomorrow. Our next stop is Beaufort, NC. The crew has repaired what they can and we have a head again, which is comforting because most of the crew and passengers (me and mine excluded) have come down with the, ah, well, there's a demand for the mizzen head as well as for the ones hanging over the sides by the bowsprit.

The bloody hurricane has kinda stalled. Looking at the various radar sites, I find Arthur to be the oddest storm I have ever seen on radar. Northern half of Maine and all of NB but NOwhere else??? Not bad here but I see one helluva lotta rain in Maine. It's pretty windy but the wind is forecast for this evening. 60 with gusts to 90 kph so it ain't bad.

BTB... I note that a huge tarsands development project has just been halted because of the nixing of pipelines in the US caused by the protests (mainly by our First Nations). BRAVO! and thanks to those who stood up for Mother Earth, including Neil Young, Tutu and the guy in the funny hat.

I'm in Charleston, SC. We lost our main mast, our mizzen head, the poop deck and the foreskincastle but the Coast Guard found us drifting and towed us to port. They tracked us by the trail of, ah, waste the cap'n left in the water when he found the poop deck gone.

If Canada had joined the US like God intended the Canucks would have been able to celebrate on both July 1 and July 4.

Now, this is very dark but I laughed out loud. Stanfest has been cancelled and that is a plain shame. It's very sad news. Just now when I heard the radio news while waiting for The Vinyl Café (it's good; CBC Radio 1) and the folk community has rallied in an attempt to pay homage to one of the good ones, Stan Rogers! This Saturday's concert with whoever at whatever church is billed as a Cat 5 Céilidh. Arthur won't be a Cat 5 hurricane but he sure as hell might screw up the concert. Made ME laugh, anyway.

Hmmm... is that a little bit ironic or just unfortunate? Unfortunate. Yeah. Not ironic at all, is it? I am minded of an Irish comic (David Byrne?) who said sommat like... if you were a city planner stuck in traffic enroute to a meeting where you were giving a talk about managing traffic, that would be ironic but rain on your wedding day is just unfortunate, adding that Alanis Morisette (spg?) is a 'silly cow'.

2:45 AM ADT Thursday 03 July 2014
Tropical cyclone information statement for:

NEW BRUNSWICK
NEWFOUNDLAND
NOVA SCOTIA
PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND

For tropical storm Arthur.

The next statement will be issued by 9:00 AM ADT.

Tropical storm Arthur to merge with a cold front late this week while moving toward Atlantic Canada. Arthur will likely affect the weather to parts of Atlantic Canada on Saturday.

1. Summary of basic information at 3.00 AM ADT.

Location: 30.9 north 79.1 west.

About 250 kilometres east of Jacksonville.

Maximum sustained winds: 110 km/hour.

Present movement: north near 13 km/h.

Minimum central pressure: 988 MB.

2. Public weather impacts and warnings summary.

The tropical storm is expected to intensify to hurricane strength later this morning as it moves slowly northeastward not far off the U.S. East Coast. A trough of low pressure will be moving eastward from the Great Lakes, guiding Arthur toward Atlantic Canada. The nature of the trough approaching from the Great Lakes will make all the difference in Arthur's intensity, track and structure as it moves toward our region.

As usual, the track map forecast implies detailed location and storm intensity however there is still considerable uncertainty. The forecast track has been adjusted slightly to the west since the track model guidance this morning indicates a track slightly farther west.

A. Wind.

Significant wind is possible for portions of Atlantic Canada this weekend especially for regions to the south and east of the storm track. However, due to uncertainty in the storm track, it is too early to confidently say where in Atlantic Canada the strongest winds will be.

B. Rainfall.

Significant rainfall amounts are likely for parts of Atlantic Canada on the weekend. Details in the nature of the interaction of the cold front with Arthur as well as the exact track of Arthur will determine where the highest rainfall amounts will occur.

C. Surge/waves.

Significant storm surge and waves is possible with Arthur especially for regions south and east of the storm track. Details as to the exact location of where the biggest impact from surge and waves will occur will become clearer in the next two days.

3. Marine weather impacts and warnings summary.

Mariners (Rap) should remain on alert and stay tuned for forecast updates.

40C... nope. 40H. We had 32C with high humidity. H = Humidex = 'feel's like'. It's like WC (wind chill factor in cold weather). At present, it's 19C with 92% relative humdiddly so it feels like about 28H.

Did ya see the fireworks last night? I didn't. Fell asleep in my rocker. Spent Canada Day in a lazy way with ale and football... USA lost. >:-( But, the smelt fry up was deeeelish!

Amos, I've gone to that park a number of times and enjoyed it greatly. What I especially like is that the meadows are large enough that the animals act naturally. I remember watching a Sable chasing around fending off another male from his harem while trying to herd a female to his own domain.

I especially like that animals that are no threat to each other and are compatible in their habits share the same compounds, so you'll see the dik diks, giraffes, sables, and other herbivores in plain view of each other. Kind of like a mini Serengeti.

I also like that visitors flank the rim of the wilderness world so that the animals can - and do - ignore our presence.

I was down there - in the early 90's - when a wildfire raged through part of the park. From my family's back yard we could see smoke and the occasional leaping flames. I don't think there were any casualties.
